Good News...Welcome to the fall session at Aurora Sewing Center and a great line up that we have scheduled for you!

With Sewing and Embroidery Club starting up again in October we have invited some great sewing experts to be with us. Among them are Gudrun Erla from GE designs with her new book and ruler, “Stripology” and Kari Carr from New Leaf Stitches will be here to show her Clearly Perfect Angles tool. Both ladies will be teaching a Club as well as doing a hands on class. We’ll also be doing projects with “Cuddle” fabric from Shannon Fabrics this fall. Wait until you feel it, there is nothing as soft as “Cuddle”.

Don’t forget to save the date for our annual Make-It and Take-It which will be November 21st and 22nd. And in December we’ve invited Bernina educator, Nina McVeigh to show us some of her amazing techniques.

Last but in no way least, as some of you already know, we are so excited to have Eleanor Burns coming!! How awesome is that? The dates are November 5th, 6th and 7th. This will be an off site event but space is limited and will fill up quickly so check your schedules and call us at either store for the details and to sign up. It’s a three day event. You can do all of it or some of it but either way it sure to be educational and lots of fun.

There will be lectures, hands on classes, and other guest teachers as well. You won’t want to miss out on this one!

Marija Here is an easy and fun class where you can play with colors, visual effects of color placements, and even plant some flowers on your quilt later! You will learn tips and tricks of successful strip-piecing and basics of machine appliqué as well – what’s not to like! This quilt can be made in three different block sizes and many different quilt sizes – from wall hanging to bed-size quilt.

Decorate Your Home10

OLD DOG NEW TRICKSDiane This project uses the new Creative Grids Quick Trim and Circle Ruler to turn 2.5” strips into pieced blocks that are then cut into circles with the same ruler and appliquéd to the background squares. We’ll be using this method to create a striking table runner that could easily become a quilt of any size just by increasing the number of blocks you make.

“Listen to your machine!”This past weekend I was working with my Dad on a project where we were welding steel. He made his living as a welder and was showing me some techniques. He said to me, “listen to the arc, that consistent crackle”. It made me think of what I tell people all the time, “listen to your machine”. The sound of your machine will tell you a lot such as when it needs oiling, cleaning, has a burred needle, or when it needs a full tune up. Think about your machine when it It sounds smooth and quiet. Over time, it slowly gets drier, dirtier, and noisier. We probably don’t notice it because it’s such a slow, gradual change.

Here are a couple of scenarios to listen for:• A burred needle will make a ticking noise as it exits the fabric and should be replaced.• Listen for the series of small clicks when you thread your machine. I highly recommend when threading that you hold the thread with both hands and listen as the thread goes through pre-tensioners, main tension, check springs and guide clips. • If you have a metal hook system it will require a drop of oil. When the hook is thirsty it will definitely let you know with the clatter. One drop of oil, no clatter!• A birds-nest causes that distinct crunching noise that will not improve if you keep sewing. Only two things cause birds-nesting, lack of tension on your upper thread (two handed threading can avoid this) or missing the take up lever. The job of the take up lever is to pull the thread tight after each stitch and tension regulates how much thread can be taken for each stitch. So missing either of these will result in an instant birds nest.• If you hear that distinct noise, stop, lift the presser foot and rethread. By having the presser foot up when you thread you will ensure getting into tension.

CLASS REFUND POLICY: We must make a commitment to our teachers one week prior to the start of their classes. Therefore, refunds are available when a cancellation is made ONE WEEK BEFORE THE FIRST CLASS, LESS A $5 HANDLING FEE. Cancellations made after that time will receive a CREDIT FOR STORE MERCHANDISE ONLY, LESS THE $5 HANDLING FEE. No refunds or credits will be given once a class has begun. In the event that ASC must cancel a class, individuals who register for that class will be contacted and given a full refund or the substitution of another course.
