am delighted to welcome you to the second edition of the Aurum Magazine.

2008 is a special and significant year for me because I am immensely proud that Aurum’s workshop is celebrating its fortieth anniversary.

I can scarcely believe that we have been an established presence in Charing Cross, St Helier since 1968, albeit initially in a much reduced capacity.

At that time, I was newly qualified and slightly unsure how successful a new goldsmith and jewellery enterprise could be in Jersey, but now, as I survey the thriving workshop and busy shop, all that uncertainty was thankfully unfounded.

The past forty years have involved a considerable amount of hard work, but it has always been tremendously enjoyable. Lifelong friendships with employees and customers have been forged, and I have been lucky enough to meet many interesting and entertaining people from all over the world.

Over the past few years, Aurum of Jersey has spread its wings and we have shown our jewellery on several occasions in high-profile establishments in London. These ventures have proved to be extremely successful and have been a source of great pride, not only to me, but to all involved in making these fabulous capsule collections.

We have highlighted some of these very special pieces within our new magazine, and have included, by popular demand, a small catalogue of our beautiful mainline jewellery, both classic and modern.

968 was a year of landmarks: Richard Nixon was elected as president of the USA, ‘Hair’ opened on Broadway, Martin Luther King and Robert F Kennedy were both assassinated, ‘flower power’, peace, and love were embraced worldwide; and Richard Blampied returned to Jersey as a newly qualified goldsmith to open a small jewellery workshop, at that time little more than a shed, behind the existing premises in Charing Cross, St Helier.

The site, now owned by Richard, is part of Jersey’s history. Dating back to 1693, it was once Jersey’s main town prison and the prison cells are still in the basement of the shop today.

Most of the work undertaken by Richard and Heidi, his late wife, in the early years was repairs for other St Helier jewellers, including long established family businesses, some sadly no longer trading. This work helped to fund their initially small production of handmade jewellery which was designed by Heidi, and crafted by them both. The details of his first job - including its charge - are still etched in Richard’s memory: 13 shillings and sixpence to replace a damaged opal!

In 2008 Aurum is a thriving jewellery manufacturer and retailer, enjoying national acclaim, and possessors of a highly regarded reputation, not only in Jersey but worldwide.

Aurum now employs 15 staff, of which seven produce the jewellery, six goldsmiths and setters, and one designer. Perhaps its uniqueness amongst St Helier’s jewellers is the size and accessibility of the onsite workshop, which, together with the elegant retail shop, has grown and expanded with the purchase of the adjoining properties in 1978 and 1993.

As the workshop’s reputation for fine and individual work grew within Jersey, Aurum was selected for many important commissions. Among these was an extremely important piece; the replica 17th Century Bailiff ’s mace that was presented by the States of Jersey to HM Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate her visit to Jersey in 1989.

Male customers to Aurum are often found staring with deep fascination at the large silver ship Nelson’s HMS Victory, a flagship piece which was commissioned by the Coombe Trust. The ship has also been on display in Lloyds of London and Portsmouth. The authentic recreation of a King George V steam train, with its coal cargo represented by thousands of small sapphires, also has an accurate working mechanism.

There have been some diverse commissions over the past forty years; a silver vintage Bugatti car to celebrate a silver wedding anniversary, trophies for Dubai horse races and a solid gold Range Rover. It was also a great honour for Richard to be asked recently to create a silver scale model of his old school Victoria College for their bicentennial year. The completed building featuring hours of painstaking detail and skilled workmanship was highly acclaimed and admired by everyone.

Ambition and the pursuit of excellence have spurred Richard on to seek opportunities further afield and for the past three years Aurum’s talented goldsmiths have produced desirable limited edition collections. They have been designed by Richard’s wife, Alexa Blampied, and as well as being extremely beautiful, have proven to be highly collectible with most of the pieces now sold. All three wonderfully individual collections have been received to great acclaim and have been featured in the national press.

Presently, the busy workshop employs six goldsmiths, including one apprentice, and one stone setter. With an equal female to male ratio the team has German, South African, and English nationals among its staff. Their skilful work, combined with the dreams and ambition of Richard Blampied, has led Aurum’s workshop to become established as a world class jewellery manufacturer. Their work has promoted and publicised the small island of Jersey, its natural beauty having been the constant source of inspiration for the outstanding jewellery.

A reputation for excellence, for having traditional values and being trustworthy is not achieved overnight, but Aurum’s workshop accomplished this long ago. The past forty years have brought immense success and satisfaction for Richard Blampied and his team and he takes a quiet pride at how far the esteemed jewellers has come from its humble beginnings.

The thrill of having a bespoke Aurum creation is not to be underestimated. Almost anything can be designed and created by Aurum’s talented team, from the initial accurate and artistic design to the final result, interpreted by the goldsmiths using traditional skills and craftsmanship, some of which are unchanged for hundreds of years. Animal items have been a constant and recurring theme in jewellery, with a wide variety of commissions; including bears, dogs, cats, and even a unicorn. There have been many exquisite and wonderful items created by the workshop. Indeed, bringing a dream to life is part of Aurum’s remit.

‘Can your workshop…?’, ‘I have always dreamed of having…’ and ‘I am not sure if this is even possible…’ are familiar words at preliminary meetings with customers and the goldsmiths are always eager to take on the challenge.

The sourcing and acquisition of amazing gemstones is of extreme importance to any prospective item of jewellery. They are intrinsic to Aurum’s success and certainly only the most breathtakingly beautiful high quality stones are chosen, usually personally by Richard and his daughter Julie, from diamond specialists in Antwerp and from visits to stone cutters in the Far East.

Julie herself has followed in her father’s footsteps to become a goldsmith; training, as he did, in Pforzheim, Germany, before joining the family business in 1997.

A Gem of a Trip

s a goldsmith and gemmologist, I am lucky enough to have travelled to fascinating places around the world and a few years ago an opportunity arose for me to take part in a gemmological trip to East Africa. Renowned as a mineral rich area producing an array of gemstones such as ruby, tourmaline, tsavorite, and of

course the relatively newly discovered tanzanite; the trip was far too good an opportunity to miss.

It may be difficult to imagine how it can be enjoyable spending two weeks staring at various sized holes in the ground. But for those of us who were lucky enough to find ourselves in this position, it truly was the trip of a lifetime.

Aged from 29 to 79, we were a well mixed group, ranging from those involved in the trade to amateur gem enthusiasts. The programme catered for us all, mixing the study of beautiful gems and wildlife into one truly amazing gemstone safari with some of the most stunning landscapes forming a vivid backdrop.

Our trip took us from Nairobi through the Tsavo national park, with the Taita hills framing the landscape in the distance, to the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, which is the only known locality of tanzanite in the world to date. Because of this, tanzanite is considerably rarer than diamonds.

The ruby, tsavorite and tourmaline mines were extremely interesting, especially being able to study in the field the geological formations hosting the rough stone. We had close first hand experience of the conditions endured for mining gemstones when we were invited to descend into the precarious mine shafts.

The highlight of the trip for me, however, was our visit to the tanzanite mining area, because both studying and working with tanzanite is a personal passion. At Aurum, we have recently experienced great public interest in tanzanite. It is difficult to say whether it is the scarcity or the beautiful colour that seduces and attracts, but nevertheless, it is a gemstone which can inspire passion and desire in both a goldsmith and a prospective owner.

The finest tanzanite is a velvety, deep intense violet blue, said to reflect the beauty of a classic Tanzanian night.

The stone was first introduced by Tiffany & Co in 1969, only two years after the gem was discovered by Maasai tribesmen. Tiffany’s chief gemmologist said at the time that it was ‘the most important gemstone discovery in over two thousand years’. Because they are only found in Tanzania, the supply of these rare gems will dwindle significantly over the next ten years, making them rarer, and much more desirable.

They are found within a mineral rich seam inside geological structures known as ‘boudins’; where calcium, magnesium, vanadium, uranium, strontium and zinc were deposited during and after the formation of the Rift valley.

The mining area is relatively small, only about 10 square km, and is divided into four blocks. Each block is under different ownership, and we were lucky enough to be invited to view ‘C-Block’ and their mining operation.

This proved to be a highly mechanised shaft mine with five productive shafts, and a couple of exploration shafts. Exploration drilling has indicated that there are reserves deeper than it was originally thought, and I believe now that there are shafts reaching as far as 800m in depth.

The mine has its own crushing plant with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes per month, with the ore generally producing about 50 carats of tanzanite per tonne; this block is particularly self sufficient in that it has its own stone cutting factory to process the rough stone.

2005 saw the recovery of the largest single piece of tanzanite from C-Block, mined from a depth of 270 metres, and weighing 16.839 carats. The rough crystal has been named “Mawenzi”, in honour of Mt Kilimanjaro’s second highest peak. They were reluctant to name it after the highest peak in case a larger piece may one day be found!

Next door, conditions were much more primitive. These seams were mostly mined by small individual groups, each sinking a shaft wherever a small patch of un-mined ground exists with little thought afforded to security and safety for either themselves or their neighbours.

The Ngorongoro crater provided the backdrop for a large part of the wildlife viewing. Following a 4.30 am wake-up call, we arrived just in time to see the sun rise over the crater, which was spectacular, and well worth the early start. The subsequent thirty minute trip down into the crater was on one of the worst ‘roads’ ever, but the crater repaid us by providing amazing viewing of wildebeest, ostrich, zebra, impala, giraffe and hippopotamuses.

The variety of wildlife was generally amazing but seeing fifty elephants converging on a water hole only a few metres away will always be an enduring memory, as will my entire East African gemstone adventure.

lassic and vintage car ownership is a growing hobby, and over recent years the market has witnessed a steady appreciation in values for the better condition cars, with certain niche marques, such as 1950s and 1960s top of the range cars demonstrating a strong upward movement in price.

Other forms of classic and vintage car ownership come with equal pleasure, but sometimes considerable headache. If you own an iconic pre-war grand prix car, a Le Mans racer or one of the many varieties of rare eclectic marques, you now have what is often known as “non financial assets.” These cars can be worth millions of pounds to a hungry circuit of international investor/collectors who chase them for the kudos of ownership, and increasingly for profit.

Comparable to rare artworks such as a Stradivarius, Chippendale furniture and Rembrandt’s paintings, these cars are written about, praised and fawned over by a growing army of experts. Furthermore, like all art, their rarity means their value is set to continue rising. In fact, experts such as Le Riche Automobile Restorers (C.I.) Ltd anticipate prices will continue to increase. Joe Castellino, Director at Le Riche, is the man behind Vehicle Asset Management. “Even with the Global Credit Crisis upon us, when you consider that the majority of today’s most expensive new cars, such as Rolls Royce, Maybach and Bentley, are heading to places like Russia and China in constantly increasing numbers, it’s no surprise that the most expensive rare old cars are also coming into sight from these burgeoning new economies.”

Presently, the owners of such motoring heritage vary from the lucky grandson or astute collector to renowned entrepreneurs, business leaders, philanthropists and celebrities. One thing the owners all have in common is the need to consider carefully how they look after their cars, not just in terms of a cleaning regime, but as the appreciating high value asset they now represent.

Consider, for example, a racing Maserati 300s from 1955. Very few were built, and each comes with automobilia such as race cards, signed autograph books, spare wheels and seats. As a racing car, a box of engine and gearbox accessories are often included, each worth a small fortune, with or without the car. This type of car is now regarded as an investment by investors interested in doing something different with their wealth. Something that they can get involved with, not just locked away in a safe.

With ownership of these historic, high value cars comes the important job of cataloguing, photographing, protective crating and storing, on top of looking after the car itself. urum have made a habit of creating award winning jewellery in recent years and after winning the prestigious Design Innovation Award for the second time in three years, designer Alexa Blampied was delighted to be recognised once more in a competition that attracts the finest jewellery designers in the industry.

The Design Innovation Award was initiated five years ago in order to recognise and reward outstanding jewellery design in platinum.

On a more general level, the competition aims to push design standards of all contemporary jewellery to greater heights, and this year attracted around one hundred and twenty entrants.

This is therefore a wonderful achievement, and is a testament to Alexa’s artistic and creative talents, and thus serves to reinforce her position as a successful and visionary designer.

Alexa was inspired to design ‘Sea Spiral - [Dance of Discovery]’ when

diving in Mauritius. She observed shoals of tropical fish moving together harmoniously and simultaneously, almost as one entity, in a sinuous dance both spiralling and swaying.

The design, shown here in the original prize winning illustration, depicts a platinum pendant with domed front and back sections featuring stylised fish, with diamond pavee sections and a eye-catching centrepiece of a deep violet tanzanite stone.

The back piece of the pendant is visible through the front, and is set with blue sapphire to represent the ocean deep, giving a sense of depth and movement.

The challenge is now for the workshop to craft this beautiful piece by hand, involving many hours of painstaking attention, for the beginning of July, when it will be photographed, unveiled, and thereafter on view at jewellery exhibitions worldwide.

Aurum are immensely proud of Alexa’s outstanding achievement, and are excitedly waiting to see the finished pendant, which will be back at Aurum towards the end of 2008.

What made you decide to become a goldsmith?

Whilst on a family holiday to Jersey in 1974, I accompanied my aunt to collect a jewellery repair from Aurum, whose small workshop fired my imagination. I found it fascinating.

Has it been everything that you expected?

Originally, I had no concept that the job of a goldsmith even existed, but from the moment I began my apprenticeship I knew I would be very happy, and that I had made the correct choice of career.

The workshop usually looks extremely calm. Is being a goldsmith as relaxing as it appears?

Yes if things are going well, but we do have our stressful moments! People who are goldsmiths tend to be calm anyway.

How has your job changed since you began?

Where I trained in London everything had to be done at a tremendously fast pace, and it was quite a pressured environment. I found a huge difference here in Jersey, where the quality of your work is more important than anything else and you are allowed more time for creative freedom.

How has Aurum changed for you over the last 30 years?

Because the workshop and the shop were so small when I started out we also used to help serve in the shop, something which I definitely don’t miss. I am not a natural salesman.

Which private commission has made you the most proud?

Probably the States of Jersey commission to make a replica Bailiff ’s mace to be presented to Queen Elizabeth II in 1989. I was deeply proud that something I had made was to be given to the Queen as a gift from the people of Jersey.

And the most difficult and challenging?

A solid 18ct gold Range Rover car, about 25cm long, which had working doors and features. It took six years to finally complete, whilst fitting it in with all my other allocated jobs.

Do you have any other creative outlets?

I paint, and I enjoy working with wood. I also have taken up playing the didgeridoo.

What is your favourite gemstone and metal to work with?

I think rubies are incredibly beautiful and I consider 18ct white gold the most amenable metal with which to make beautiful jewellery.

Do you design jewellery yourself?

Not a great deal. I do a lot of interpreting designs, which can be tricky in its own way. I am very lucky to have worked with the gifted Aurum designers Alexa and Heidi.

What has been your most interesting commission?

Both of Alexa’s prize winning designs, the Ebony and gold diamond bangle, and the platinum and diamond ‘Whirlwind’ ring, were deeply interesting, from a sculptural and architectural aspect. They were exciting to bring to life, and they needed mathematical precision.

What was your boyhood dream?

Always to be outdoors, perhaps to become a gamekeeper or farrier; which is a little odd, as now I am totally committed to the goldsmith’s bench!

Do you follow any sport?

I have supported Tottenham Hotspur since I was a boy, and I like to play golf when I can.

What was your first car?

I always had motorbikes until I was in my late twenties. When I passed my driving test in Jersey, I bought a Mini, a great first car and a handy vehicle for Jersey’s compact and sometimes challenging small lanes.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of a career as a goldsmith?

Start out with an apprenticeship rather than attend a college. The work is more practical and employers tend to prefer someone who has their qualification from a workshop. Prepare yourself for five years of training.

Are any of your four children hoping to follow you as a goldsmith?

I think it is unlikely. One of my sons is studying art at college, but he much prefers painting. The other children have interests in other areas.

Do you consider yourself to be an honorary ‘Jerseyman’?

You are only a true ‘Jerseyman’ if you were born here. However, I love Jersey, and I truly enjoy my job.

t is perhaps fitting that, having been instrumental and influential in Derek’s choice of career, Richard Blampied has enjoyed the benefit of his exceptional skills as a goldsmith and workshop manager for over twenty years.

No commission or project that Aurum has undertaken has so far proved to be too difficult or demanding for Derek. In fact he relishes each challenge, and applies his considerable skills in a calm, exacting manner.

Aurum is Derek’s spiritual home as well as his place of work. It provides him with a test for his artistic skills and with Richard always beside him as his mentor, their equalled dedication has produced the finest handmade jewellery within the Channel Islands.

rctic Moods, the 2008 Aurum collection, has proved the most entrancing and desirable selection of jewellery ever produced by our workshop; demonstrated by the immediate purchase of almost half of the twenty pieces at its showcase preview in September 2007.

Alexa Blampied, Aurum’s gifted and prize-winning designer, was primarily inspired by the vivid and surreal Aurora Borealis, the ‘Northern Lights’, which led to the Arctic Moods Collection, with pertinent themes of the wintry north, ice, snow and stars.

The designs borne from this concept were subsequently handmade in Aurum’s workshop using only diamonds, both superior quality white diamonds and rare extraordinary coloured diamonds in pink, blue and yellow.

This is an incomparable and peerless collection that evokes a fairy tale romance, and will undoubtedly melt a snow queen’s heart.

Care for your diamondsDiamonds do need care to keep them at their brilliant best.

A clean diamond not only reflects light better, but actually looks bigger than one that’s been dulled by skin oils, soap, cosmetics and cooking grease. Diamonds have an affinity for grease and should be cleaned very regularly.

Diamond do’s & don’t’s• Don’t let your diamond come into contact with a chlorine

bleach when you’re doing house-work. It won’t hurt the diamond, but it can pit or discolour the mounting.

• Don’t wear your diamond when you’re doing rough work or washing up. Even though a diamond is durable, it can be chipped by a hard blow along its grain.

• Don’t jumble your diamond pieces into a drawer or jewellery case because diamonds can scratch each other and also scratch other jewellery.

• Bring your Aurum diamonds back in to us at least once a year. We will check your jewellery for any loose settings or signs of wear.

The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats. One carat = 0.2 grams and one carat equals 100 points.

All diamonds have traces of their growth history. In gem-quality diamonds, this concerns minute internal and external characteristics, graded under Clarity.

The clarity scale reflects the size, number, location and visibility of the characteristics when examined with a loupe 10 X. The very best - and rarest - clarity is loupe clean. Most inclusions, however, are not visible to the naked eye. Diamonds that have no inclusions visible to the unaided eye are also of excellent value.

Most diamonds are colourless to slightly yellowish. The colour grade is determined by comparison with a series of master stones, the best grade being colourless (D, exceptional white +).

Diamonds can also occur in all sorts of colours, ranging from brownish to striking yellows, pink to purple, red and blue. These are called “fancy colours”. Certain diamonds can react to “black light” with grades varying from nil-slight-medium to strong. Besides colour, the fluorescence of the diamond is also graded.

Fire, brilliancy and scintillation of a diamond are largely determined by the proportions of various parts of the stone. Finish grade mainly evaluates the symmetry.
