Versions of Unsu kata are taught in Shōtōkan
ryū, Shitō ryū and some schools of Okinawan
Shōrin ryū. Unsu is known to be one of the ol-
dest kata handed down to us. Its origin remains
unknown, but its history can be traced back to
master Aragaki Seishō (1840-1920). Aragaki
Unsu kata of Koryū-Uchinādi-Kenpō-Jutsu is
based on teachings Richard Kim sensei (1919-
2001) handed down to his student Patrick Mc-
Carthy sensei.
Patrick McCarthy sensei - martial arts expert,
outstanding competitor, book author (e.g.
“Bubishi – The Bible of Karate”) and seminar
instructor of international renown - is going to
teach a second international seminar in Dres-
den. Martial artists of any style are welcome
to participate, when this year he enfolds his in
depth understanding of kata bunkai using Ara-
gaki Unsu (新垣雲手) as an example. A learning
