Hello, Ausn Chapter. I want to intro-

duce myself as your new 2011-2012

Chapter President. I have been an acve

volunteer on the BOG for the AusnChapter for the past 7 years so I have

had a chance to meet many of you. Im

looking forward to the upcoming year

with great programs, seminars, and fund

-raising events.

I hope everyone is enjoying their sum-

mer and surviving this killer heat wave.

A summer like this makes you appreciate

how important our industry and HVAC is

to everyone. Can you imagine if you did-

nt have air-condioning during some of

these past 106F days??? It also makes

you realize how large the opportunity for

energy savings is within our industry

(and your home electric bill if it has been

as large as mine the last couple of

months!).

One of my goals this year is to increase

aendance at our chapter meengs, par-

cularly with the engineering communi-

ty, or the E in ASHRAE. To aract more

engineers, we are going to have pro-

grams with subject maer more relave

to their interest and educaon needs.

We are also going to have some chapter

meengs with other organizaons in our

industry to allow for some addional

networking and cross training. Finally,

weve already got a great tour sched-

uled for those with interest in refrigera-

on and/or beer!

Another one of my goals for this year is

to connue to grow our Young Engi-

neers in ASHRAE, or YEA. Ashley Brad-

ford did a great job with promong YEA

and organizing events to bring these

young people together. We expect

more great turnouts and involvement

with YEA again this year. Be on the

lookout for upcoming YEA events and

spread the word with your Gen Y col-leagues.

We are kicking offthe year with a great

Main Program: How to Get Your LEED Project Through the Review Process

Presented By: Ken Simpson, P.E., USGBC

The presentations main focus will be on tips for submitting a LEED project successfully and errors commonly made during the sub-mission process. It will also contain a brief discussion on the history of GBCI, recent improvements and developments to the certifi-cation process, and the future of the certification process.

BiographyKen Simpson is an Energy/HVAC Review Team Lead for the Certification Department at the Green Building Certification Institute,which is the review wing of USGBC. He worked for 13 years at two mechanical and electrical design consulting firms, which includ-ed ten years at EEA, before joining GBCI in October 2010. He obtained his professional engineering license in the State of Texas in2005. As a consulting engineer, he worked on mechanical/HVAC/plumbing designs including all types of buildings from semi-conductor manufacturing facilities and military aircraft hangars to traditional office buildings and residences. An additional focus was

on energy auditing and studies for businesses, schools, hospitals, and small municipalities. In recent years, he helped develop andgrow the commissioning business within EEA. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a Bachelor ofScience in Engineering.

Steven James McNiff

One of our ASHRAE members, a Past President, Mr. Steven McNiff, 53,

passed away at the end of May, 2011. For those of us who remember Ste-

ve, we will miss a great salesman, an Engineer, and friend. At right: Ste-

ves picture as it appeared on the Ausn ASHRAEs August 1995 News-

leer, the Ausn Register.

Steven James McNiffwas born on March 31, 1958 in Tallahassee, Florida

to Air Force Colonel Frank McNiff (deceased) and Janet McNiff. He lived in

Colorado for many of his younger years. In 1974, while living in Colorado

Springs, he earned his place as an Eagle Scout. Shortly thereaer, while a

Junior in High School, he moved to San Antonio, Texas. In 1976 he gradu-

ated from Roosevelt High School in San Antonio and entered Texas A&M University (Whoop!), where he became a

member of the Corps of Cadets in the Spider M-2 Marine Corps Division. Steve graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of

Science Degree in Engineering Technology. He was an Aggie all the way, and had a great love of the outdoors, and

especially hunng.

Steve owned his own business for several years then decided to make a change. Steve worked for Curt Fox of Fox

Mechanical in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He sold Energy Management Systems as well as other things at Fox

Mechanical (now Fox Service Company). He le Fox to open the Landis & Gyr Branch for Ausn as a salesman. Ste-

ve was known as a creave and tenacious salesman, and the early driving force in the growth of Landis & Gyr / Sie-

mens in Central Texas. He took a lot of pride in the fact that when he started the Landis office in Ausn, it was just

him working as a one man show.

During his tenure at Landis & Gyr / Siemens, he captured numerous high profile customers such as Baylor University

and the State of Texas Facilies. As the years went by and the Siemens office grew, he was responsible for guiding

the local management philosophy of the organizaon. One of his employees, remembers him saying several mes

if we cant do the job fully and well, then we should not bid it. Many believe his best trait as a manager was to

find the right people to do the job, with an understanding of all their strengths and weaknesses. He mentored many

people in the local organizaon, and at the me he le the Central Texas General Managers job with Siemens, the

organizaon had nearly 60 employees from Waco to Brownsville.

Steve McNiff also was the Ausn Chapter of ASHRAEs Foreth (40th) President in August for Society Year 1995-

1996. The Chapter celebrated its Foreth Anniversary in April, 1996, during his tenure. As a dedicated member of

the local engineering community, Steve was another ASHRAE enthusiast who spent numerous hours in the Chapter

filling various commiee and officers posions unl reaching the Presidency. Steve worked enough posions that

the Chapter put him up for a Chapter Service Award just this year at our Annual Chapter Regional Conference (CRC).

Its unfortunate that the award will be made posthumously.

Steve also made many friends throughout the years, and this author remembers him for his intelligence, sharp wit

and humor. Many other ASHRAE members in Ausn and San Antonio were friends with Steve and he will be greatly

missed! Those of us who knew Steve are truly blessed.

Steve is survived by his children Steven James McNiff, Jr. and Leah Michelle McNiff, his mother Janet McNiff, and his

brother Frank Lowell McNiff, Jr. He was preceded in death by his father Frank Lowell McNiff, Sr. and his brother Mi-

chael Shawn McNiff.

This author would like to thank Mr. Brian Fron, Mr. Brian Walsh, and Ms. Jenny Blasser Peterson for contribu nginformaon for this brief arcle.

Data Centers, Standards 90.1 and 189.1 Featured in ASHRAE Fall Educaonal Courses

ATLANTA Three new courses related to data center efficiency and ASHRAE standards on energy efficiency and

high-performance building design are part of the 12 online professional development courses being offered this

fall by ASHRAE through the ASHRAE Learning Instute (ALI).

SECO will be hosng seven training workshops on the latest energy codes mandated for state-funded buildings.

Effecve September 1 all state-funded commercial buildings are required to be in compliance with the latest

edion of ASHRAE 90.1 2010. The workshops include a presentaon of the current Standard 90.1 document as

well as a review of some of the more substanve changes/addions made since the 2007 version, plus the sub-
