NATIONAL COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS FOR 2016At our annual general meeting in October, nominations were received for executive committee positions for 2016. I am pleased to announce the following appointments:

NATIONAL CHAIR FOR 2016 DR huGO ACOSTA-MARTINEZHugo is the current AGS treasurer and deputy chair. Hugo was born in Colombia where he obtained his Civil Engineering degree. Later he completed a Master of Engineering degree at the University of Tokyo and in 2005 moved to Australia where he completed a PhD at the University of Western Australia. Following completion of his PhD, Hugo joined the Ground Engineering and Tunnelling team of AECOM in Perth, where currently he holds an Associate Director role. Hugo’s involvement with the AGS started at a WA Chapter Committee during the last year of his PhD and he has maintained involvement in the AGS since. His main technical interest is in soft ground engineering.

TREASURER AND DEPUTY CHAIR PROFESSOR STEPhEN FITYuSStephen is currently the national committee member for the Newcastle Chapter. Dr Stephen Fityus began his career as a junior engineer at Coffeys. Thanks to combined undergraduate degrees, he can rightfully call himself a geotechnical engineer and an engineering geologist. He has been at the University of Newcastle since 1994, where he is now professor. He has been a member of the AGS since 1989 and part of the Newcastle Chapter committee since it became an autonomous chapter, including a period as its chair. He has been a National Committee member on several occasions during that period. His research areas include reactive clay soils, rockfall phenomena and the mechanics of mine wastes.

SECRETARY PETER ROBINSONPeter Robinson will continue as secretary of the AGS, a role he has held for the past 10 years.

COuRSESOur new course, Unsaturated Soils for Practitioners will be running in Sydney from 31 March to 1 April 2016. Please see the flyer in this edition. The course to be presented by Professors Adrian Russell and Nasser Khalili and will aim to enhance the capabilities of practicing engineers when applying soil mechanics, analysing data and solving problems involving unsaturated soils.

We are excited to be introducing this new course and expanding our CPD offerings to our members and we look forward to a successful course.

Our Geology for Engineers course will be held in Adelaide in 2016. Announcements and flyers will be put out shortly.

REGISTRATION OF GROuND ENGINEERING PROFESSIONALSThe new National Engineering Register (NER) was launched in November. At this stage, there is no separate division within the register for ground engineering professionals. AGS has formed a group to work with the NER on providing a separate category within the register for ground engineering professionals.

We will provide regular updates as the working group progresses and feedback will be sought from members during this process.

ANZ 2019I am pleased to announce Mr. Michael Smith as the conference chair for the next Australia New Zealand conference on Geomechanics, to be held in Perth, 2019. Michael is the design team leader for projects, dams and dam safety at the Water Corporation of WA and has previous conference organising experience having helped to deliver two previous ANCOLD conferences in Perth.

The ANZ conference is our premier regional conference. The quality of the papers in the 2015 edition provides testament to that. We look forward to another successful ANZ conference in Perth, 2019.

ICSMGE 2021 uPDATEAGS was recently represented at three international conferences of the ISSMGE: the European conference in Edinburgh, Asian conference in Fukuoka and Pan-American conference in Buenos Aires. I would like to thank Mark Jaksa, Graham Scholey, Guillermo Narsilio and Hugo Acosta-Martinez for leading the promotion of our bid at these conferences. We were very successful in communicating to the global soil mechanics community our intention to bid and in extolling the benefits of Australia as the destination for the conference.

We are continually looking for interested people to help promote our bid. If you are heading to an international conference and are interested in helping to promote our bid, please contact our bid manager Graham Scholey, [email protected].

CLOSINGThis will be my final report to members as I move into the role of Immediate Past Chair. I have enjoyed my role as chair and believe we have been able to improve our services to members and strengthen the society over the last 2 years. I hope to continue to contribute to the AGS in the years to come and thank all our members for their support.

2015 ThOMAS TELFORD PREMIuM AwARDED TO ThREE AuSTRALIANS Professor Buddhima Indraratna and Dr Sanjay Nimbalkar from University of Wollongong (UOW) and Tim Neville from Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) were honoured in October by the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK by awarding them 2015 Thomas Telford Premium – Ground Improvement, for their R&D efforts in track stabilization, with special reference to track design and health monitoring of a heavy haul track in Singleton near Newcastle, NSW. The field data interpretation and the innovative concepts of track stabilization were described in the publication: “Performance Assessment of Reinforced Ballasted Rail Track” (Ground Improvement Journal). In essence, the use of synthetic grids and resilient mats in tandem were demonstrated to be the most suitable and cost-effective option for minimising track degradation, reducing maintenance costs and for extending the life-cycle of track by several fold, where increased axle loads and higher speeds are planned for future heavy haul.

PROFESSOR BuDDhIMA INDRARATNA RECEIVES TOP INDIVIDuAL hONOuRSGeotechnical engineering and rail infrastructure expert Professor Buddhima Indraratna received the highest honour in Railway Awards at the combined Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) Gala Dinner and Awards Night held at the NSW Parliament House. Professor Indraratna received this most prestigious honour within the Australasian Railway Community from the State Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Hon. Andrew Constance.

The RTSA Individual Award is usually offered annually to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the railway industry in the Asia-Pacific. RTSA, a joint Technical Society of Institution of Engineers Australia and Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand, was formed in 1997 to further the interests of the railway industry at large and its individual proponents. Its main objective is to promote cooperation of academic, industrial, commercial and governmental organisations in relation to the practice and advancement of railway technology and management.

The award citation reiterated the recognition of his overall career achievement in providing an outstanding engineering and technical service to the wider railway community both nationally and internationally, originality and innovation of his research outcomes, the degree of autonomy in which he currently operates and the quality and appropriateness of leading-edge publications that have been presented in high quality journals and reputed international conferences.

Through this prestigious award, RTSA also acknowledged the impact he has made to the rail industry worldwide thereby influencing the technical standards and rail practices with respect to track design, as well as construction and maintenance through both fundamental and applied research. In particular, the citation clearly acknowledged his efforts which have revolutionised track infrastructure in terms of design innovations and extended longevity, enabling faster trains carrying heavier loads.

2015 RIChARD CAVAGNARO AwARD ANDREw BRADLEY (uNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE)The South Australian Chapter of the Australian Geomechanics Society held their SA-NT Young Geotech presentation evening recently, showcasing both young industry professionals and university students alike.

Five young members took the opportunity to present their current projects, after which they fielded questions. By evenings end, an AGS panel gave valuable feedback to the presenters before announcing the recipient of the Richard Cavagnaro Award for 2015. For his outstanding work on ‘Modelling of Rolling Dynamic Compaction in LS-DYNA’, University of Adelaide PhD student, Andrew Bradley, proudly accepted the honour along with a share of cash prizes.

Andrew is part of a University of Adelaide post graduate group who are working hand in hand with South Australian compaction specialists, Broons. This valuable partnership is bringing together both the commercial and academic communities to accurately model the performance characteristics of the Broons ‘Square’ Impact Roller manufactured in Adelaide.

Used for deep soil compaction on many of the world’s largest civil engineering projects including the Palm Islands in Dubai, the locally made Broons’ ‘Square’ Impact Roller has been at the heart of Andrew’s PhD research.

With his post graduate counterparts, Andrew is generating accurate finite element modelling relating to the application of Rolling Dynamic Compaction. For many years the University of Adelaide and Broons engineering departments have benefited from real world testing providing a valuable exchange of ideas.

Energy absorbing rubber mats being placed on a railway bridge deck to minimize ballast breakage and reduce vibrations, the concept and analysis based on computer simulations and field data interpretations which earned Professor Indraratna, 2015 Thomas Telford Premium Award by the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK.

The Australian Geomechanics Society will be running a series of workshops from March 2016. The aim of the workshops is to enhance the capabilities of practicing engineers when applying soil mechanics, analysing data and solving problems involving unsaturated soils. The workshops will be delivered by experts on unsaturated soils from UNSW’s Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety.

Unsaturated soils are widely encountered and need to be dealt with in many engineering problems, for example foundations, fills, embankments, pavements and slopes. In many cases true predictions of performance and true assessments of safety cannot be made without use of unsaturated soil mechanics. However, the use of unsaturated soil mechanics in practice is not routine. Many design and analysis techniques used are only applicable when soils are dry or fully saturated.

If you or your colleagues would like to attend, please find the registration form on the AGS website at: http://australiangeomechanics.org/course_post/ussm4pe-workshop/ and return the completed form via email to: [email protected] by Friday 26 February 2016 to assist the Australian Geomechanics Society with planning.

Subsequent workshops would be held in other capital cities as needed to meet demand.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOPSThe objectives are for practitioners to learn how to:

• Build on their knowledge of saturated soil mechanics to account for the effects of partial saturation and suction using the effective stress concept

• Define and quantify stresses, strains, shear strength and deformation in unsaturated soils

• Determine shrink and swell potential in a mechanically consistent way

• Plan a program of laboratory tests and interpret data

• Determine parameters from laboratory testing and field/in situ testing

• Analyse seepage and moisture movement in unsaturated soils

• Assess lateral earth pressure and bearing capacity in unsaturated soils

• Analyse slope stability and account for strength loss due to rainfall

• Apply unsaturated soil mechanics in a range of problems, and take guidance from techniques used in case studies.

WHO SHOULD ATTENDThe workshops will be designed for engineers, geologists and other professionals who deal with unsaturated soils.

It is envisaged that each participant will have some industry experience and, as a minimum, a knowledge of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering to Bachelor of Civil Engineering standard.

PRESENTERSNasser Khalili is a Professor at UNSW and is internationally recognised for his contributions to unsaturated soil mechanics and computational geo-mechanics. He is credited with the development of the first thermodynamically consistent framework for constitutive modelling of unsaturated porous media. Some of his seminal contributions to the field include: i) formulation of the first fully coupled flow and deformation model for unsaturated porous media including hydraulic and mechanical hystereses; ii) formulation of a bounding surface plasticity model for cyclic analysis of variably saturated soils, iii) formulation of a thermo-hydro-mechanical model for unsaturated porous media, iv) formulation of the first hypo-plasticity model for unsaturated media, and v) formulation of an equivalent skeletal stress for multi-phase multi-porous media. His work to the mechanics of multi phase multi porous media has attracted many awards and accolades. Similarly, his work on the mechanics of double porosity media is considered as a benchmark in numerical modelling of fractured porous media and is widely cited in the literature. He has worked in academic environment for 26 years, and as a consulting geotechnical engineer for four years.

Adrian Russell is an Associate Professor at UNSW and leads a number of research projects and themes focussed on fundamental mechanics, analytical modelling, and novel experimentation related to structures interacting with unsaturated soils. He has written more than 70 research papers, and has been awarded many times for his research. He is Secretary of TC106, the Technical Committee on Unsaturated Soils within the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. In 2014 he received the International Innovation Award from TC106 for his research on the CPT and retaining walls in unsaturated soils. He has worked in academic environment for 15 years, and as a consulting geotechnical engineer for three years.

MODE OF DELIVERYThe workshops will involve a number of formal lectures, tutorials and problem solving classes and case study presentations.
