This publication is one of the outcomes of the Integrated Research Strategy Project - an Australian Language andLiteracy Policy project commissioned by the Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs tosupport initiatives for the implementation of the National Collaborative Adult English Language and Literacy Strategy.

The principle aim of the project was to provide a clear picture of the existing state of research in the field of adultEnglish language and literacy and to provide guidelines for future directions.

FOREWORD

The Integrated Research Strategy Project proposed thedevelopment of this guide to assist practitioners, policymakers and researchers in locating and retrieving rele-vant research information from on-line databases andelectronic retrieval systems. The Integrated ResearchStrategy Project (which included numeracy within itsdefinition of language and literacy) was an AustralianLanguage and Literacy Policy project commissioned bythe then Department of Employment, Education andTraining to support initiatives for the implementationof the National Collaborative Adult English Languageand Literacy Strategy. Its aim was to provide a clearpicture of the existing state of research in the field ofadult English language and literacy and to provideguidelines for future directions.

This guide comes at a time when the use of Internet isgrowing rapidly in the community of language and lit-eracy professionals and there is a clear need for a ref-erence guide to assist teachers and researchers whoare beginning to explore the Internet for their profes-sional needs.

I hope this guide serves as a catalyst for facilitatingmore research in the field of language and literacy.

This guide is intended to be a resource for those whoare just becoming interested in the Internet. It doesnot explain the Internet in technical detail; it offersonly a brief overview and concentrates instead on howto access various language and literacy resources. Fora more comprehensive understanding of Internet thisguide should be used in conjunction with popularInternet titles such as The Internet Navigator .

The directory of addresses in this guide is a result ofmonths of browsing, and following up the postings on anumber of language and literacy related Mailing Lists.Colleagues who use Internet regularly have also con-tributed to the collection. It is not a complete list andnew sites are emerging all the time. The addresses list-ed in this guide were updated in June 1996. Attemptsare underway to make a directory such as available viathe Internet so it can be kept up-to-date.

This book assumes the reader has access to Internetresources either through a university or through adial-up account using a modem. I have limited myexplanations of the Internet to using the most popularand user-friendly Internet tools such as Netscape andEudora.

WHAT IS THE

INTERNET?

for Language and Literacy Teachers and Researchers

The Internet is really no more than a collection of com-puters around the world that are connected or net-worked together. Despite the fact that these thousandsof computers differ in their make, computing powerand operating systems all of them are able to commu-nicate with each other using a common languageknown as TCP/IP, Transmission ControlProtocol/Internet Protocol. Computers connected toInternet can transfer text files, graphics, sound andvideo using this TCP/IP language.

More powerful computers on this Internet are knownas servers. These servers are storehouses of large vol-ume of data and run special software to serve this datato other smaller less powerful computers known asclients. Computers we use at our homes can be termedclient computers. Many large organisations, universi-ties and Internet service providers have their servercomputers connected to the Internet 24 hours a dayand allow client computers to connect via local net-works or telephone lines. The information you canaccess through a server on the Internet may be storedon that server or any other server, even one located onthe other side of the globe.

Through these servers and client computers theInternet makes it possible for us to do various thingssuch as: exchange and distribute electronic messagesvia email and news-groups; search databases andretrieve information through World Wide Web; andtransfer software and files through File TransferProtocol (FTP). The Internet is growing rapidly andmore and more computers are joining the list of serverand client computers. To be able to connect to theInternet as a client your computer needs specific hard-ware and software and an account with a localInternet service provider.

Although the Internet has a wealth of resources a fewof its features are more commonly used than others:

Newsgroups

FTP

The most basic Internet service is electronic mail.Internet email lets you send messages to other users,regardless of where they are located or what type ofcomputer they use. To send an email message youneed to open a mail program such as Pine or Eudoraon your computer and compose a message in its win-dow. You also need to know the unique email addressof the person you wish to contact. An Internet emailaddress looks like this: username@address of the com-puter For example you can contact ARIS at:[email protected]

Mailing lists are electronic discussion groups compris-ing people with similar interests. Using email servicespeople can post messages that are distributed to allmembers of a discussion group simultaneously by anautomated mailing list software. You subscribe to a listby sending an email to the Listserver address. You willsoon receive daily, weekly or occasional email mes-sages from people who submit them to the list. You cancontribute your questions, comments or information inthe same way.

Newsgroups are the Internet's town hall. Similar tomailing lists, newsgroups are also topical discussiongroups. The difference is that with a mailing list, mes-sages appear in your email box whenever you checkyour email, whereas newsgroup messages remain onthe news-server's computer. You can read newsgroupspostings by using a news-reader software or NetscapeNavigator. There are many thousand newsgroups onalmost every conceivable topic.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol but often it isused as a verb to represent the action of file transfer.You FTP to transfer a file from a remote computer onthe Internet to your own computer. Many distance edu-cation students FTP their assignments to the host

computers of their lecturers or supervisors. Severaluniversities and software companies also make avail-able useful educational and computer software for pub-lic access through FTP. To FTP from your computeryou will need to run special software. NetscapeNavigator also allows you to do FTP.

Also known as the Web or WWW. The World Wide Webis the 'point and click' way of accessing informationover the Internet. The software that allows your com-puter to access the WWW is called a Web browser. Abrowser lets you take a virtual walk around theInternet or its sites, checking out what is available anddeciding whether you would like to see more, allthrough on-screen clickable links. Netscape Navigatoris the most popular Web browser; it allows access tohome pages, various Internet search facilities andnewsgroups simply by pointing and clicking.

There also are many other services such as Gopher,Telnet, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Multi-user Dungeon(MUD) and more.

If you are working within a university environmentand have access to university resources you can find anetworked computer that has access to Internet bycontacting your information technology departmenthelp desk. Ask for a computer that provides access toNetscape, Telnet and email programs.

If you are thinking of accessing Internet from yourhome computer you will need to purchase a modemand subscribe to Internet through an Internet ServiceProvider (ISP). Apart from a modem and an Internetaccount you will also need software to use Internet-based services such as email and the World Wide Web.

Your computer equipment should be from the upper-end of the range of Macintosh or IBM-compatible PCmachines (486 and higher) with preferably 8megabytes, or more, of RAM (Random Access Memory).You will need a high resolution colour monitor to makefull use of multimedia environment on the Web.

A modem is the translator between your computer(digital) and the phone line (analog). The higher thespeed, the better the performance. The best availablecurrently is 28,800 bits per second. A 28.8 kbps V.34modem from a reputable company would be a goodchoice for Web use.

The software allows your computer to speak theInternet language, TCP/IP. It also lets you perform thevarious facilities of the Internet: email, Web-browsing,file transfer and others. Software is commonly avail-able from the Internet Service Providers and alsocomes on disks enclosed with popular Internet books(see list later in this section). The most importantclient-software needed on your computer is:

This program lets your modem dial up your provider.Trumpet Winsock and Netmanager's Custom are twopopular diallers available as shareware. Macintoshusers will need MacTCP alongwith MacPPP orInterSLIP dialler.

Qualcomm's Eudora is the most popular and versatilee-mail program available as a `freeware' from Internet.Eudora has a similar interface for both IBM and Maccomputers.

Netscape Navigator is by far the best and most com-monly used. It is also available as a `freeware' for edu-cational use. Netscape is simple to use and its linksand layouts will seamlessly introduce the user to otherInternet facilities like Newsgroups, the databasesearcher gopher and FTP.

This is important software for accessing catalogues ofvarious libraries from around the world. The telnetcommand is integrated in Netscape Navigator but youstill need a telnet client on your hard disk. NCSATelnet is available on Internet as freeware.

There are quite a number of books on Internet current-ly on the market but be very watchful. These booksbecome outdated very quickly. Some of the useful onesare:On-Line in Oz - by Sue LoweUsing the Internet - by Que ( comes with a disk full ofInternet software)Internet Australasia - a monthly magazine that giveslatest information on Internet developments and pub-lishes a directory of Internet Service Providers.internet.au - another Australian monthly magazinecontaining useful information about WWW sites.

Once you have all the necessary ingredients for con-necting to Internet (ie, a computer, a modem, anInternet account, a telephone line, dialler software andsome client software such as Netscape Navigator andEudora) it's time to make a start. The setting up ofyour Internet connection is not a straight forward taskand unless your service provider has equipped youwith clear instructions and compatible software it isbest to get someone experienced to handle the configu-ration and setting up. Details of setting-up are beyondthe scope of this guide but if you want to know moreabout setting-up your connection, a book like InternetStarter Kit by Adam Angust is a good resource.

CHOOSING AN

INTERNET ACCOUNT

Types of Account

for Language and Literacy Teachers and Researchers

If you are going to connect to the Internet through acommercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) there are afew important things to know before you make a choice.

Internet Service Providers offer two kinds of accounts:a shell account and,a SLIP or PPP account.

A shell account provides most basic type of Internetconnection. Using a shell account you cannot see pic-tures or graphics; your Internet connection has a 'textonly' interface. To work with a shell account you needto learn some basic Unix commands because with thisaccount you don't have a 'point and click' interface.Shell accounts are usually less expensive and preferredby computer nerds.

A SLIP or PPP account is more popular with theInternet and World Wide Web users. Most InternetService Providers are now offering PPP accounts whichprovide a graphical interface to the Internet allowingyou to run Windows-based software for Internet ser-vices such as email and the Web. This guide is based onusing the Internet with a SLIP or PPP account. Thistype of account is more expensive but allows a user-friendly interface and a direct access to Internetresources. Some large commercial on-line companiessuch as Compuserve and Skynet also allow their cus-tomers to access Internet through their own gateways.

When choosing an Internet Service Provider it isimportant to find out:

Do they provide software compatible with your plat-form, for example Macintosh or Windows?What software do they provide? (dialler, e-mail pro-gram, web browser, ftp software, telnet etc.)How do they provide it? On disk or you have todownload it on-line? If the latter, will they help youover the phone?Do they have modem connections at your speed?Is dialling -up (connecting to them) a local call?What is the ratio of modems at that speed to users?What is the ratio of lines to users? ( For both, thehigher the better.)

Some ISPs have flat rates; others have a combinationof joining fee, monthly fees and per-hour charges, vary-ing at different times of the day. With some ISPs as lit-tle as $70.00 can buy you an Internet account and 20hours of access time. To get a fair idea of performanceof their services check local Internet magazines or aska friend with some experience.

for Language and Literacy Teachers and Researchers

Email or electronic mail is one of the most popularmeans for communicating through the Internet. Emailworks a lot like ordinary, postal mail. You write a mes-sage, address it, and send it on its way. At the otherend, the person to whom you send it sees that a mes-sage from you has arrived. They can then read it. Emailusually takes only a few seconds to get through.

There are many different software programs for email.If you have an standard shell account your host com-puter may offer you Pine, Elm or Mail programs. If youhave a PPP or SLIP account you will have to load anemail software such as Eudora or Pegasus on your per-sonal computer. Eudora is a free software available onthe World Wide Web. Eudora is simple to use andallows you to read and write messages off-line, i.e youcan compose a message or read a previously down-loaded message without first connecting to Internet.

When you get an Internet account you also get an emailaddress so that others can communicate with you onthe Net.All email addresses have the following components:user's name@name of the computer. type of organisationfor example: [email protected]

Commercial organisations have the letters .com andGovernment computers have the letters .gov at the endof their addresses. And educational sites have the let-ters .edu. There are also .net for network and .org fornon-profit organisations. Net addresses commonly endin a country code such as .au for Australia, uk. forUnited Kingdom, .i/ for Israel and .in for India. MostUS addresses are an exception to this. rule.

There are never any spaces in an Internet address,and it is usually all lowercase. Email addresses arenot case sensitive which means writing in upper-case orlower-case will not make any difference.

An email address can be long especially if theyinclude the name of the department or even the indi-vidual computer. For example an email address maybe long like: jsw%[email protected] short like [email protected]

After successfully loading Eudora on your PC or Macyou need to configure it for your Internet account. Inthe following section I will show you how to configureand use Eudora to compose and send email mes-sages.

1. Double click on the Eudora icon. [Eudora launch-es and is most likely to open with just a menu bar.]

2. From the Special menu, choose Configuration.[Eudora will present you with the Configuration dia-log box. See illustration below.]

4. Write your name in the Real Name field.

5. Fill in the SMTP address for your email in theSMTP Server field. [The SMTP address is similar toyour email address but without the @ sign. eg. yarra.vic-net.net.au ]

6. You may leave the other fields at the default set-tings.

7. Click the OK button to close the configuration dia-log and save your changes.

8. From the Special Menu, choose Switches.[Eudora brings up the Switches dialog.box ]

9. Uncheck the Immediate Send checkbox in thesending options. [This ensures that you can composemail and queue it for sending without being connectedto the Internet the entire time.]

10. Click the OK button to close the Switches dialogbox and save your changes. [Eudora is now ready foruse.]

1. Make sure Eudora is running. From the Messagemenu, choose New Message. [Eudora presents youwith new message window, with the From fieldalready filled in with your email address and name.]

2. Make sure your insertion point is in the To field.Now type in the e-mail address of the person to whomyou are sending this message.

3. Press Tab, or click to the right of Subject field.Enter your subject , something like 'test message' or`Hello'.

4. Click in the large area of the window for typing thebody of your message. Type a short message.

Make sure that Eudora is running and that you areconnected to Internet. [An easy way to do this is tolook at your modem lights. If a row of lights is on, youare connected. One or two lights indicate a lost connec-tion.]

2. From the File menu select Check Mail. [A win-dow will appear asking you for a password.]

3. Enter your password correctly and click OK.[Eudora will display logging on to your POP server andcollecting your mail. New mail will appear in window]

4. Double Click on the message line to Open and readit.

5. To reply to this message, choose Reply fromMessage menu.

6. Write a short reply by typing just above the originalmail which appears as <quoted mail>.

7. When your are finished click on Queue button.

8. Now go to File menu and select Send Queued mes-sages. [Eudora will start connection to your SMTPserver and send your queued message.]

9. To delete the message from the In box first high-light the message line and then select Delete from theMessage menu.

Eudora has many more useful features but unfortu-nately the freeware version doesn't come with a manu-al. There is good chapter on how to use Eudora in theQue publication, Using the Internet.

Mailing lists are one of the most useful services ofInternet from an educational point of view. Mailinglists provide a forum for on-going discussion, informa-tion dissemination, sharing of ideas and seeking ques-tions and answers. You can subscribe to a mailing listusing your email program. Once you subscribe to a listany message posted to the list by any subscriber isduplicated by the Listserver computer and sent to allsubscribers at their email addresses. For language andliteracy teachers and researchers there are severalmailing lists providing instant access to hundreds oflanguage and literacy teachers worldwide. You canjoin a mailing list simply as an observer and watchover the discussion, or you can take an active role byresponding to postings.

Mailing lists are generally run by an automated com-puter program such as Listserv, Listproc orMajordomo. To join a mailing list you need to sub-scribe to it using your email program.

1. Find the name of the list and the address of its list-server.

2. Send an e-mail message to the listserver addresssaying subscribe listname yourname

For example, to subscribe to 'Literacy' mailing list runby the listserver at the [email protected] followthese steps:

1. Open your mail program and choose New Messagewindow.

2. In the To: address field type in the email addressof the listserver computer as: [email protected].

3. Leave the Subject line and other fields blank.

One important thing you must remember is that thereare always two addresses associated with mailing lists:

the address where you send commands to a computerto join or leave a list. This address is usually

[email protected] address where you post your messages to the list.This address is usually [email protected]

When sending a message to a list you must send it tothe appropriate address to avoid embarrassment.

You might find that a particular mailing list is notreally what you want and a lot of junk mail may beaccumulating in your mailbox unnecessarily. You caneasily leave such a list by unsubscribing. To unsub-scribe you will need to send an email to the listseryaddress.

For example to unsubscribe from the 'Literacy' mailinglist follow these steps:

1. Open your email program.

2. Choose New message from your menu.

3. Type in [email protected] in the To: addressfield.

4. In the first line of the body of the message write,`unsubscribe Literacy'

5. Leave all other fields blank and send the above mes-sage.

After you send the unsubscribe message successfullyyou will receive a reply within a few minutes confirm-ing that your name has been removed from the list.

This is the fanciest and the fastest growing part of theInternet. Actually it is the World Wide Web that haspopularised the Internet and brought the technology toordinary computer users. The WWW is a hypertextenvironment which allow users to access informationwith just a click of a mouse. Netscape Navigator is themost popular software for using WWW. It allows usersto access WWW, FTP, Newsgroups and Email from asingle piece of software. Using Netscape you can followhypertext links that take you from one site to anotheron the Web.

When you double click on Netscape icon it will open ahome page with a window similar to the one shownbelow:

The location the computer information is comingfrom. This part is very similar to the second part of anE-Mail address.

Where on that computer the information is stored.

Example of a URL:http: / / adhocalypse.arts.unimelb.edu.au/ -atellwhere

http: / / is the type of transferadhocalypse .arts.unimelb.edu.au / is the location of

the computer, and-atell is the name of the file.

The above address is the URL of the home page ofAustralian Technology Enhanced Language LearningConsortium. If you read this address from the left toright you will find that there are several parts to it:http: / / indicates the type of transfer of information; inthis case it is hypertext transfer protocol. The partafter the two forward slashes / / is the part that tellsthe location of the computer: adhocalypse is the nameof a computer; arts is the location of computer; unimelbis the organisation where this computer is; edu is thethe type of organisation (in this case an educationalorganisation); and au is the country where this com-puter is located (in this case Australia). The next bit ofaddress / -atell is the name of the file which is openedat this address.

It is important to remember that the part of URL afterthe first forward slash following the location of com-puter is case-sensitive and has to be correctly enteredor you will not get a response.

Configuring Netscape

What you need toknow

for Language and Literacy Teachers and Researchers

The Netscape browser needs to be configured accordingto your service provider's settings before it can do its-many add-on things such as e-mail, access toNewsgroups, Telnet to various libraries and performseveral other sound and animation related tasks.

Note: The configuration part is best handled by techiesor computer support people. What you need to tellthem is what your requirements are and what applica-tions you need to work with your Netscape. In mostcases if you don't ask them you won't get these things.

To send email through Netscape you need to tellNetscape your SMTP server and e-mail address. Thisinformation is put in the Mail and News box ofPreferences under the Options menu.

To access Newsgroups via Netscape you need to tellNetscape where your NNTP news server is. This infor-mation is also put in the Mail and News box ofPreferences under the Options menu.

To access local and overseas libraries and databasesthrough Netscape you need another piece of softwarecalled Telnet. Netscape needs to be configured properlyto be able to identify Telnet on your computer. This isgenerally done through the Application andDirectories box of the Preferences under theOptions menu.

To listen to sound files and view video images youshould have appropriate sound and video cards onyour computer. You will also need sound and videodecompression softwares on your hard disk and yourNetscape browser needs to be configured properly toidentify these helper applications.

SEARCHING THE WEB

What does a searchengine do?

for Language and Literacy Teachers and Researchers

Finding what you are looking for could be a very diffi-cult task on Internet. Thanks to some very efficienttools known as search engines finding information onWWW has become relatively simple.

In essence there are two simple ways of finding infor-mation on the WWW. You could either use a searchengine to do a keyword search or use a subject-basedlisting to search for information. A good example of asearch engine is Lycos whereas Yahoo is a hierarchicalcategory-based listing of resources. Apart from Lycosand Yahoo, there are many other search engines andcategory listings that do the same job. Until now Lycoshas been the most comprehensive search engine cover-ing more than 90% of Web sites in its catalogue.

When you type in a key word in the query form of asearch engine and specify your search options, thesearch engines scans thousands of Web pages lookingfor the keywords specified by you. Then it returns alist of Web addresses in the order of relevance or occur-rence. You can then click on any of the search resultsto see if the home page contains the information youare looking for. On occasions you would need to makeintelligent guesses in choosing which site to try.

Lycos is just one amongst many useful search engines.At times you will find that the information you arelooking for may not be available through Lycos andusing another search engine may produce betterresults. It is true that no single database or searchengine can possibly cover all the information that isavailable through the WWW.

Using 'Search'

for Language and Literacy Teachers and Researchers

Most of the time when using a search engine you won'tneed to do much more than type in your keyword inthe text entry box and hit return or click the searchbutton. The search engine will do the search andreturn you the result in a matter or seconds.

Use the Lycos search form to make your search morespecific. You can:- Make your search more narrow, or wider- Have the search match all words in your queryrather than the default 'ANY words'.- Search for a number of terms which is DIFFER-ENT from the number you entered. NLLIA Course DatabaseX-Credit Database

The NLLIA Course Database contains searchableinformation on various aspects of language and litera-cy courses taught in the Australian higher educationsector including: addresses and phone numbers ofinstitutions, courses, and information on the peopleinvolved, various language and literacy resources, bib-liographic listings and language scholarships.

The X-Credit database is a searchable listing of insti-tutions offering post-graduate courses and subjects inApplied Linguistics and related disciplines. The data-base can be used to generate search queries based oncourse details, institution details or unit/subjectdetails.

Direct access to NCELTR on-line resources is avail-able to authorised users through its on-line librarysystem. Users can also access this library service bydialling direct through their modem. The number todial is 1800 656 831. Sydney users are expected touse the local number which is 02-878 5900. You willbe prompted to give your login name and password.After verifying your identity the system will bring upsome latest announcements before taking you to itsmain menu. The main menu offers you choices toaccess Bulletins, Files Area, Message Area, Today'sCallers List, Info Plus and the DELTAA Database.This system uses DOS-like menu-based commands.There is a lot of information about NCELTRresources, recent acquisitions, conference announce-ments and other related items.

Using the direct dial-in access system requires morecomputer skills compared to the on-line Web homepage. With time as more resources are put to theNCELTR web site the direct access system mightbecome redundant.

account When you are registered to use a particularcomputer system, you are given an account.Associated with the account are a unique user nameand a password. You must enter these to show thatyou are authorised to use the computer system.

address A unique name or number identifying a com-puter user or computer. Addresses are used in net-work communication in transmitting messages to aparticular person or machine.

archive Collection of files related to a particular sub-ject, which are stored on computer and made avail-able to the network community via world wide webor FTP.

bps Bits per second. A measurement used to describehow fast data is transmitted. Often used for describ-ing Modem speeds.

browser An application program that provides easy-to-use tools for exploring and retrieving informationfrom servers. Netscape and Mosiac are popularbrowsers for world wide web.

client A computer that uses the services of anothercomputer to access information. A client computerdials a server computer and accesses Internet ser-vices provided by the server.

domain name A structured name for a computer in anetwork. eg dingo.vut.edu.au

download The act of transferring a file from a serverto a client computer.

email An electronic mail that can be sent on computernetworks.

editor A computer program designed for creating andmodifying text and hypertext files. Web Editors areused in creating world wide web pages.

edu. Standard letters used to identify educationaldomains.

Eudora A software program used for managing elec-tronic mail on client computers.

file A collection of data capable of being handled as asingle identity and referred to by a single name.

FTP File Transfer Protocol. The standard method fortransferring files between different computer sys-tems connected to the Internet.

gopher A browser tool developed for retrieving textbased data using on-screen menu. A precursor toworld wide web browsers.

host A computer system usually a server where datais stored. Every host on the Internet is identified bya unique address.

IP Address A unique set of digits identifying a com-puter connected to a network and used by the com-munications programs. eg. 203.10.72.1 is an IPaddress for a server maintained by VICNET.

IRC Internet Relay Chat. A form of 'party line' thatenables many Internet users to take part in a real-time group conversation by typing messages.

login To correctly identify yourself to a computer sys-tem as an authorised user and begin an Internetsession. Normally to login you need to give a validuser name and password. To disconnect from thesystem is termed as log-off.

Modem Data communication equipment that convertsa computer's digital signals to analogue signals that

can be transmitted over standard telephone lines.Digital and cellular modems also allow data to betransmitted over both fibre optic and microwavemedia.

Newsgroup A subdivision of network news whereitems covering particular field of interest are postedand stored. eg. misc.kids.computer is a newsgroupfor discussion on use of computers by children.

PPP Point to Point Protocol. A form of connecting tothe Internet in a live, active mode, such as across amodem. PPP is an official engineering standard forthe Internet and offers data compression and secu-rity checks on link.

protocol An agreed set of rules by which messagespassed from one computer system to another areencoded and interpreted.

SLIP Serial Line Internet Protocol. A live Internetconnection similar to PPP which lack some of thePPP's more advanced features like data compres-sion.

TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/InternetProtocol. These represent two most important proto-cols used on the Internet. They ensure that mes-sages passed from one computer to another areinterpreted correctly.

Telnet A software program on a client computer whichenables you to connect from that computer to anoth-er one on the Internet.

URL Uniform Resource Locator. A unique address forlocating a Web or FTP based document. URLs com-monly begin with the letters http.

WWW World Wide Web. A system for transmittingpages of multimedia information across the
