A progressive institutionFrom the start, the University of Adelaide was one of Australia’s most progressive institutions. It was the first Australian university to admit women to academic courses—in 1881, ahead of Oxford (1920) and Cambridge (1948). It was the first Australian university to grant degrees in science, the first to establish a Conservatorium of Music, and the first to graduate a woman surgeon.

This progressive attitude, combined with teaching and learning of high quality, one of the best student-to-staff ratios in Australia, outstanding research and a strong tradition of community service has enabled the University of Adelaide to develop quality graduates, recognised internationally for their knowledge, skills, leadership, creativity, global outlook and ability to influence positive change.

Outstanding researchThe University of Adelaide provides a learning environment where teachers are also active researchers who are among the best in their fields. The University is among the most research-intensive universities in the South East Asian region, with major strengths in agriculture, health and biomedical sciences, the environment (climate change and sustainability), social innovation, mineral and energy resources, and sensing and computation.

From per-capita research grants to higher degree completion rates, the University of Adelaide’s achievements consistently rank among the highest in Australia and our regional neighbours. The University offers outstanding opportunities for research in an environment that encourages and values personal interaction with academic staff.

Extending across four campuses, the University’s grand old buildings and environs combine with the most modern research facilities to provide an exceptional learning atmosphere in which students can achieve their best.

Our students enjoy an active social life on campus, with facilities including cafeterias, a bookshop and the Fitness Hub, plus numerous sporting and special-interest clubs. Hub Central on the North Terrace campus is a popular place for students to meet, study, make social connections and exchange ideas.

North Terrace campus: Located within Adelaide’s central business and shopping district, the University’s main campus on North Terrace is renowned for its beauty, convenience and lively atmosphere. The campus is home to some of Adelaide’s most significant buildings, including the historic Mitchell Building with its elegant stained glass and fine stonework, and Elder Hall, a popular venue for concerts and public lectures. Recent multi-million dollar investments in infrastructure have seen the University of Adelaide add modern world-leading research and teaching facilities to the North Terrace campus, including the six-star green-star Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences building, the student-focussed Hub Central, and the Braggs science precinct. The University’s location in the central business district close to the heart of Adelaide allows students to enjoy the

café strip of Rundle Street, the parklands surrounding the city, the cultural boulevard of North Terrace complete with State Library, the State Museum and South Australia’s State Parliament, and the shopping district of Rundle Mall.

Waite campus: Situated only eight kilometres south of the city campus, the internationally renowned Waite campus encompasses the largest agricultural research complex in the Southern Hemisphere and provides a fertile environment for scientific studies in agriculture, food, wine and natural resources management. As well as being home to the A$26 million “super” greenhouse known as the Plant Accelerator, the Waite campus houses the largest concentration of agricultural research scientists in Australia, with the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the Australian Wine Institute (AWRI), several divisions of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG) all located on campus. The University of Adelaide staff and students work with these campus partners, providing a unique opportunity to gain practical and theoretical knowledge through participation in ongoing national and international research projects.

Roseworthy campus: The Roseworthy campus was Australia’s first agricultural teaching and research centre, and is home to South Australia’s only veterinary science program. Located on 1600 hectares of land, the campus is situated 53 kilometres north of Adelaide, adjacent to the world famous Barossa Valley wine region. Roseworthy is an internationally renowned centre for excellence in dryland agriculture, natural resource management and animal production. The campus houses new leading-edge veterinary health centres that provide services to the public and offers animal science and veterinary medicine students a real world experience.

Thebarton campus: The University of Adelaide’s Thebarton campus, four kilometres west of the city, is a dedicated research and development park that stimulates vital interaction between the University and Australian business and industry. The Thebarton campus hosts a number of applied research activities in areas including physical sciences, engineering and occupational health. Commercial enterprises include businesses involved in materials engineering, biotechnology, environmental services, information technology, industrial design, laser/optics technology, health products, engineering services, radar systems and telecommunications. The campus also operates a business incubator aimed at helping students and alumni commercialise their research innovations.

A relaxed city lifestyleAdelaide is an ideal environment in which to live and study, offering all of the conveniences of a major city but few of the hassles. Situated on a fertile plain flanked by the natural beauty of the Adelaide Hills and 22 kilometres of white sandy beaches, Adelaide has a population of 1.2 million people. In the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2014 Liveability Survey, Adelaide was ranked as the 5th most liveable city in the world.

Surrounded by parklands, Adelaide is one of Australia’s most cosmopolitan cities, with an impressive array of cafés, restaurants and shops reflecting the diversity of its ethnic communities. Known as the 20-minute city, it is easy to get around in Adelaide thanks to its broad boulevards and an extensive public transport network. Its central location makes it an ideal gateway to explore South Australia’s many tourist attractions, from world-renowned wineries and rugged coastlines to the wonders of the Australian outback.

A multicultural stateHome to many indigenous peoples for thousands of years before European settlement began in 1836, South Australia has since welcomed migrants from all over the world and is characterised by a great diversity of cultural traditions, languages spoken and systems of belief. About 20% of the population was born overseas in more than 200 different countries. A mostly secular society exists peacefully alongside many faiths, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Baha´i and Judaism.

Cost of livingRecent research by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling found Adelaide to be the most affordable city in Australia. The cost of living in Adelaide is up to 19% less than in Sydney and Melbourne, and 7% less than in Perth and Brisbane.

Introductory Academic Program (IAP)The Introductory Academic Program is intended to provide AAS students with a range of skills necessary to make a smooth transition to and enhance performance in their academic programs. The IAP is compulsory for AAS students, and students must arrive prior to its commencement.

The IAP is five weeks in duration and takes place prior to the commencement of your academic program. The first week of the IAP includes some orientation activities to help you settle in to the University and to Adelaide.

Students with familieswww.international.adelaide.edu.au/life/studying/children/

The Australia Awards Scholarship does not provide any financial or other support for your dependants. If you are planning to bring your family to Australia, you are strongly advised to arrive on your own first for at least the first six months. Once you have settled into your new living and learning environment and have found long-term accommodation, you will be in a better position for your family to join you in Australia.

If you intend to bring your children to Australia, please be aware that there are costs associated with childcare and schooling in Australia.

Childcarewww.adelaide.edu.au/childcare/

Quality childcare services are available at the University’s North Terrace and Waite campuses, and at many childcare centres throughout Adelaide. Fees vary from approximately AUD$65–90 per day to approximately AUD$350-$445 per week. Students receiving Australian government scholarships (such as AAS) may be eligible for a government subsidy of part of these fees (the Child Care Benefit).

Childcare services generally cater for children between the ages of three months and five years of age.

Kindergartens or preschools located throughout Adelaide and suburbs offer educational programs for children who are four years old. Fees for kindergarten may be from AUD$80 per term (10 weeks).

For children who are attending school, many public primary schools offer after-school and vacation care for a fee (currently around AUD$8–9 per hour for after school care and approximately AUD$30 per day for vacation care).

Education for children of international studentsSchool attendance is compulsory for all children in Australia aged between six and sixteen years, with most children commencing school at five years of age. School attendance is from Monday to Friday and generally from 9.00am – 3.30pm. The school academic year commences in late January and the year is divided into four terms.

Schools available to the dependants of international students include State government-operated public schools as well as independent schools.

As a holder of an Australian Government scholarship (an AAS award) your dependant children can attend public schools and pay the same low fees as local students.

To be eligible for this, you will need to obtain a document called the “Letter of Authority” from the Department of Education and Child Development (DECD). A request for this letter must be made through the International Student Centre to verify your student and scholarship status to DECD. The ISC will facilitate the Letter of Authority for you after your arrival in Australia.

The School Materials and Services Fee is payable each year. This is a fee paid by all parents – local and international. It helps the school to buy exercise books, pens and other personal resources for students. This annual fee is set by the school and ranges from A$110 up to A$920 per child per year depending on the school and level of services offered.

Intensive Primary English CourseIf your primary school aged child needs English language instruction, you can enrol them in the Intensive Primary English Course (IPEC), which is an intensive English course designed to provide young children with the skills required for entering mainstream primary education classes. Students usually attend the IPEC Program for one year. They can then continue at the school in the mainstream program or go to their local school if you wish. Similar intensive English language support is also available at secondary school for older dependant children. Contact the Department of Education, Training and Employment for details of primary and secondary schools offering intensive English language support in South Australia.

Accommodationwww.adelaide.edu.au/accommodation/

Adelaide has a wide range of accommodation options including University-managed accommodation, residential colleges, student hostels, private rentals and share-housing. University-managed accommodation and residential colleges offer many advantages, as they are close to campus and offer furnished rooms with the cost of electricity, gas and water all included in the fee.

Students accompanied by family members will find private rental accommodation in houses or apartments is the most suitable option. It is easiest for students to arrive in Adelaide alone initially in order to arrange suitable permanent family accommodation.

All international students are guaranteed one week of single room temporary accommodation upon arrival (a fee applies – approximately A$200 for a single student for one week at the time of printing).

This service is provided by the Accommodation Service and must be arranged before arrival.

Health insurance and serviceswww.oshcallianzassistance.com.au/default.aspx

The Australian Government requires all international students and their families to have health insurance in Australia through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme. The OSHC helps pay for medical care which you may need when you are studying in Australia.

As an AAS student, your OSHC (Single) cover will be paid by your scholarship.

The University’s preferred provider of OSHC is Allianz Global Assistance. When you accept your Placement Offer, the University will arrange an OSHC (Single) membership for you with Allianz. You will receive your OSHC membership card on arrival. If you have dependants on your Student Visa you will be required to purchase OSHC (Family) membership by paying the difference between a Single and Family cover.

At the time of printing the fee for OSHC Essentials cover is AUD$594 per year for a single student, AUD$1,643 for a family of two and AUD$2,396 for a multi-family policy. This is subject to change.

OSHC covers up to 100% of the scheduled fee for most medical services and 100% of the scheduled fees in hospitals. Scheduled fees are those recommended by the Australian Government, but doctors and private hospitals often charge more than this recommended scheduled fee, creating a ‘gap’ amount that must be paid by the patient. Whenever possible, check with the doctor or hospital providing the treatment if a gap payment is required, and how much extra you will need to pay over and above the refund you will receive from the medical insurer. Always check your benefit entitlement with the insurer before going to a private hospital.

OSHC servicesServices and charges not currently covered by OSHC include:

> Treatment for medical conditions, or disabilities, in existence before you came to Australia during the first 12 months of membership

> Additional charges for single room accommodation in hospitals

> Assisted reproductive services such as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF)

> Dental, physiotherapy, optical wear

> Pregnancy related services if your visa is for three months or less

> The difference between the scheduled fee for any service and the actual charge levied by the doctor or the hospital (remember, many doctors and private hospitals charge above the scheduled fee).

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you may like to investigate additional insurance options in your home country for the first 12 months of your stay in Australia.

Postgraduate study options

Postgraduate Coursework ProgramsPostgraduate coursework programs consist of a number of advanced-level courses (usually 2-4 per semester) assessed through assignments, essays, seminars and exams. A minor research thesis is sometimes required but the majority of the teaching and assessment is carried out through lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions.

Postgraduate coursework programs are usually taught in a series of articulating programs, including Graduate Certificate (one semester duration), Graduate Diploma (one-year duration) and Masters (1-2 years duration).

Postgraduate Research programsHigher degrees by research (HDR) are offered at two different levels: Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Master of PhilosophyThe Master of Philosophy is offered in every Faculty as the only research Masters degree available to prospective research students. Programs are conducted over two years of full-time study and students are trained in research methodology and techniques, engaging in the critical evaluation of literature and results in their area of research. International students who enter the Master of Philosophy undertake the mixed research and coursework stream

of the program. One-third of the degree will include coursework dealing with research methodology, while the remaining two-thirds of the program will comprise research and the production of a research thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)The PhD is the basic qualification for a research or academic career. It involves up to four years of full-time research. In the course of completing the degree candidates develop the capacity to conduct research independently at a high level of originality and quality and make a significant original contribution to knowledge in their chosen discipline.

Admission to a PhD program requires substantial previous research experience, such as the completion of a Master’s degree with a significant research component.

Postgraduate study at the University of Adelaide can be undertaken by coursework or by research. Postgraduate coursework programs are mostly taught through advanced-level courses, and a minor research thesis is also required for most programs. Postgraduate research programs require students to spend the full duration of their degree working on a major research thesis under the guidance of a supervisor.

Master of Planning Urban planning is concerned with how we design, regulate and manage the cities, neighbourhoods and places in which we live our lives. As cities become larger and more complex, and an increasing proportion of the world’s population lives in cities, it is important that we manage their growth to provide a good quality of life for all residents. This can be done through ensuring employment opportunities, protecting the natural and historic built heritage and ensuring cities are resilient in the face of natural disaster threats and climate change. Planners’ central concern is to ensure that our cities are attractive places to live and work now, and that they are sustainable into the future. The program emphasises the importance of the design of spaces and places. Design-literate planners are keenly sought after by many employers.
