Australia has focused on increasing the efficiency of itsbeefproductionandtheoveralleatingqualitythroughitsworld leadingMeat Standards Australia grading system.It has vast grass-land environments where beef cattleare grown. However,many of the highest quality cattlearefinishedongraininAustralia’sfeedlotswithafeedlotcapacity of over 1million head.Over 80%of Australia’sfeedlotcattleforexportareAngusorAnguscrossbred.

Angus in AustraliaAngus cattle were originallyimportedfromScotlandtosouthernAustraliain1824.ThebreedspreadwidelythroughoutAustraliaduetothe cattle’s ability to survive andflourishundertheharshAustraliangrassland conditions. Themajorityof Angus are concentrated in thetemperate climates of southernAustralia. However, Angus arealso used widely in the northerntropical and subtropical regionsfor both straight breeding andcross breeding beef production.Angusmayhaveeitherblackorredcoat colour, with black being thedominantcolourinAustralia.

Southern Cross Breeding Project

This study compared seven breeds (Angus, Belgian Blue,Hereford,Jersey,Limousin,SouthDevonandWagyu)crossedtoHerefordcowsforfouryears.Anguswerefoundtohavethehighestcalfsurvival,lowbirthweight,highestfatdepthat weaning ensuring easy finishing, high growth rate, highcarcaseweightandhighestmarblingofallthebeefbreeds.Thestudyconcludedthat;“Whiletherearenobreedcrossesexcelling in all traits, the Angus has demonstrated its highcalfsurvival,growthrate,fatdepthandmarblingjustifyingitscurrentpopularitygivenrecentmarketspecifications.”

Northern Cross Breeding Project

This latest study compared nine breeds (Angus, Hereford,Shorthorn, Charolais, Limousin, Brahman, Santa Gertrudis,BelmontRedandCharbray)crossedto1000Brahmancows.The study confirmed the findings of the Southern CrossBreeding Project showing Angus to have the lowest birthweight, high fertility, high growth, good fat depth, highestmarblingandthehighesteatingqualityoffnorthernpasture.
