Welcome to Lyons Ranch! We are glad to welcome longtime customers and new friends to our 25th Annual Superior Genetics Sale! The bulls in the offering are the result of decades of planned breeding for the balanced traits like great fertility, performance, carcass and calving ease. There are some strong new bloodlines as well as some of the great sire groups you have liked here before. Each animal in the sale is designed to become a valuable addition to your herd and help improve the beef industry. To increase the accuracies of the bulls’ EPDs, we have DNA tested every bull in the sale through Igenity and Angus Genetics Inc. The American Angus Association reports that the adding a genetic profile can give a young bull’s EPDs accuracies as high if he had recorded over 16 head of progeny. We have done this so you can make solid breeding decisions for your operation’s success and allow all of us to make better genetic progress. We are glad that you have been able to enjoy a good cattle market in the past year. We see many of you twice a week at the sale barns at JC Livestock Sales and Clay Center Livestock Sales, and see the demand that Lyons Ranch-sired calves generate because of their performance in the yards and on the rail. Like you, we are living with the stress and effects of the drought. Whatever the conditions, know that we feel that you should get good value for your Lyons Ranch purchases, and we will do our best to help you be successful. All updates, videos and an online catalog can be found on our website LyonsRanch.com. All cattle have been tested BVD-PI free and will be current on vaccinations. They will have passed a breeding soundness exam with their semen checked under the microscope, so no deferred bulls sell. All animals will be current on vaccinations, and the heifers will be preg checked open. Any potential carriers of AM, CA, and NH have been tested free. SEMEN CHECKS & HERD HEALTH

All bulls have been semen evaluated by Kansas State University veteri-narians. Any unsatisfactory or deferred bulls will not sell in the sale. All

cattle will sell with proper health papers for immediate shipment.

Bulls have been given Stay Bred VL5 prior to the sale. We recommend all bulls receive a breeding soundness exam prior to each subsequent

breeding season.

Tested BVD-PI Free: The entire cow herd at the north and south ranches, as well as each animal in the sale, has been tested and confirmed nega-

tive for BVD-PI. We have been testing for seven years and have never had a positive animal.

BREEDING SOUNDNESS GUARANTEE

All bulls are fully guaranteed for breeding soundness for the first 90-day breeding season.

BUYING CATTLE OVER THE INTERNET. Please let us know if you plan to buy over the internet and have ap-

plied but haven’t heard back from DV Auction within a few days. . After the sale, please contact Jan Lyons to make payment and

Calving Ease Direct – CED – is expressed as a difference in per-centage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Calving Ease Maternal EPD – CEM – is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers as compared to the progeny of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD - Milk – is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering.

$Value index EPDs are multi-trait selection indices, expressed in dollars per head, to assist producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future prog-eny of each sires are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. There are many $Value Indices. We have included two, $Grid and $Beef.

Grid Value - $G – expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value - $B – expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

PERFORMANCE DATA - Beside each animal’s pedigree is a box that includes the individual’s performance data and their Production EPDs.

BW: Birth Weight (actual and EPD). All birth weights in this catalog are actual, not adjusted. WW: Weaning Weight (adjusted 205 day weight and EPD). NR: Nursing Ratio of the individual’s dam (number of calves she has raised and the average weaning weight ratio of them). The number in the right box is the individual’s Milk EPD. YW: Yearling Weight (adjusted 365 day weight and EPD). Some bulls in the catalog have an * in the yearling weight box. This is an actual weight on Nov. 16, 2012. SC: Scrotal Circumference (adjusted scrotal circumference at a year of age in centimeters).

Integrity of Data Provides the Base

Today’s technological environment demands that we provide up-to-date information covering many selection criteria. On this page is a descrip-tion of some of the features we include in our catalog. Not every piece of data is important to every person. Pay attention to the information you need and evaluate the animals yourself on sale day to help insure your own success.

With so much push toward producing curve-bending animals with extreme numbers, it can be tempting to focus on single trait selection when you are buying cattle. As we have for generations, we encourage you to select what works for your program without going for extremes. We need cattle that with high fertility, good feet and legs, are easy fleshing and have strong udders – don’t forget this when you make your selections.

In every case, the integrity of the data is only as good as the person who reports it. We have made every attempt to collect and report data in an honest fashion. If you have any questions about any of the numbers provided, don’t hesitate to ask.

All Sale Bulls were DNA Tested

In addition to the regular weights and measurements we have recorded and reported for generations, we DNA tested every bull in the offering. We drew blood and sent it to the American Angus Association. Scientists with Igenity identified unique genetic markers in each animal and sent us back much stronger EPDs. This extra information on young animals can help reduce risk and allow all of us to make faster genetic progress.

Understanding DNA Information

Every bull that sells in the sale has an exceptionally high accuracy on his EPDs because of DNA testing.

IIn an effort to increase what we know about the heritable traits on the bulls in the offering, and so we could be able to share this with you, we drew blood on each bull in the sale then sent it in to Igenity and Angus Genetics Inc. at the American Angus Association. The result is an EPD with a much higher predictability so you should be able to have more confidence in each trait and better know what to expect in the calves out of the bulls you purchase at Lyons Ranch.

EPDs, Expected Progeny Differences, allow producers to make comparisons between cattle within the breed and have been around for many years. A young, unproven bull with no sons or daughters recorded at the American Angus Association will have a very low ac-curacy on each EPD because he is unproven. By using DNA to create a genomic-enhanced EPD (adding DNA to the animal’s perfor-mance and its ancestors’), the accuracy on a young animal with no ultrasound record will go from an accuracy of .05 (the default) to .41 depending on the trait.

Many of the Lyons Ranch bulls in the sale have accuracies over .40 on some EPDs because of three things:1. DNA-testing through Igenity2. Accurate reporting of an individual’s performance3. High accuracies in their ancestry
