With an ever evolving role a pharmacy plays in communities throughout Saskatchewan, there are also changes that come with those new adjustments. With different

provincial regulations being introduced over the past few years, many pharmacies are now taking on more responsibilities.

That also means renovations to some places like the one in Watrous. Slated to wrap up later this year, the tweaks at the

Watrous Pharmacy will enable staff to provide essential services and the best care possible.

As part of the renovations, pharmacist Cindy McLean said, “The dispensary will be modifi ed to include a separate drop off and pick up window to

enable effi ciency of service. A new private counselling room is being added which will allow patients to access the new services that pharmacists can provide in a comfortable and private manor.”

Under new guidelines, McLean said pharmacists

can extend current prescriptions if deemed appropriate. Legislation also allows pharmacists to prescribe certain medications under a circumstance that may lead to a disruption in prescription therapy.

It was an evening of celebration for the Watrous Manitou which took home a pair of fi rst place fi nishes after being nominated for a total of fi ve awards.

At the 98th annual Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association convention Apr. 11 to 12, the Watrous Manitou placed fi rst in a pair of categories to go along with two seconds and a third in the Better Newspapers Competition.

The weekly newspaper took home fi rst for best editorial page with a circulation of 1,200 to 1,999. Current publisher and reporter Daniel Bushman placed fi rst in the best tourism story or series of stories for his work in promoting tourism within Manitou

Beach and Watrous. Bushman also placed second for best black and white photo, which was a picture overlooking Manitou Beach. The reporter/photographer then nabbed third in best photo essay for his collection of prairie scenes which included fi elds, a barn and the grain elevator in Watrous.

Former editor Nicole Lay took home a second for columnist of the year for her excellent work.

The Watrous Manitou was up against newspapers mainly comprised from Saskatchewan and ranging from larger centres like Moose Jaw and Lloydminster.

I hope that you were able to enjoy this past Easter weekend. As I was thinking about the Easter season, there are so many fun and enjoyable memories I have growing up as a kid. Many of you that read this may still think I am a youngster, but going back to when I was even smaller, my siblings always enjoyed Eas-ter. Some of my favourite recollections from Easter were at my grandparent’s homes. On the Bushman side, we would all get together at the farm, southwest of Drake and since the ground was usually wet and mucky, we would usually be sopping by the time the day ended. We as cousins loved creating adventures at the farm. Since I was from town, being on the farm was special and I made sure to take advantage. My cousin Rick and I always seemed to be getting into some sort of trouble, but we also had a blast walk-ing in the pasture, playing in older buildings and in-specting the barn, which was occupied by chickens. Grandma and Grandpa would also get uncles and aunts to hide goodies around the farm. Talk about a treasure hunt! From the confi nes of a house to the open space outside, dozens of us that made up the Bushman grandchildren would venture out seeking our chocolate. Those that were a bit older were gra-cious enough to help the younger crew search for Easter goodies while they hunted for their own. Of course, the older we got, the harder it became to fi nd the treats. Our uncles made sure of that! I also remember there was a raft in the pasture we made one year and at Easter, if the ice had melted enough, we would trudge out to the water to try and pry the raft from the ice. If we were successful, we hopped on and tried our best not to get a boot full or ‘accidentally’ push someone off. It was not uncom-mon for a few of us to have a soaking sock or two when we returned back for supper. On the Driediger side, we also had a blast at my grandparents in Nokomis. One of my favourite things was seeking out those O’Henry mini bars. All of the cousins would wait in a room and then the uncles and aunts would hide the chocolate. Being the oldest grandchild on my mom’s side, it seemed that my Uncle Dale and Uncle Mark always had the perfect place for my chocolate. After most of the kids found their goodies, my cousin Braden and I would usually be left to fend for ourselves. But, we always found them . . . eventually! Then, it was our turn to hide the little sugary treats. My grandparents had a fan in their living room so that was a guaranteed spot to put one on top of. Another was buried beneath the couch cushions while one of us would stuff one near the clock. Of course, we were delighted when it took longer for the adults to fi nd the Easter bars. If you ask my Grandpa, he will tell you that their basement in Nokomis was a makeshift hockey arena. Since there were seven boys and four girls in the cousin contingent, hockey dominated the basement. Usually a scratch or dint would fi nd its way on to a wall or the cushions from the couches would get a workout from us body checking each other into them. But my grandparents were so gracious and let us compete for the Stanley Cup downstairs. It was al-ways a loud occasion but we had an absolute blast and those are memories that we have taken with us through the years. While it gets tougher and tougher to get everyone together as we grow older and move to different parts of the country, whenever we do, we always have an awesome time, no matter where we meet. And if it is around Easter, the goodies usually come too!

“This doesn’t look too good Sammy -the geese are already headin’ back south again....!”

MANITOU

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel is a legendary fashion designer with quite a few notches in her belt. Among Time magazine’s list of most infl uential people of the 20th century Chanel is the only fashion designer given that honour. She was famous for trademark suits (Chanel suits) and of course the timeless “little black dress”. Her perfume, Chanel No. 5, is still popular today.

Chanel is credited with bringing women out of the dark ages, saying goodbye to the days of corsets and confi ning garments. It was a revolution in the fashion world.

Today there is another fashion revolution taking place. Apr. 24 is deemed Fashion Revolution Day in honour of the workers killed when the Rana Plaza factory complex in Bangladesh collapsed. That day one year ago,

1,133 people were killed and many more injured.

Apr. 24 is a day when those involved in the fashion industry around the world come together to remember the disaster. That includes designers, icons in the industry, high street shops, couture shops, factory workers, cotton farmers, media, campaigners and academics and all those who care about where their clothes are made.

In fact, that is the question people are urged to ask, “who made your clothes?” On Fashion Revolution Day, people are encouraged to wear their clothing inside out. For those who have a twitter account, take a photograph and share it using the hashtag #insideout.

The concept is to make people aware of who makes their clothes - from the garment to the machinist to the farmer that grew the cotton. Organizers say there are over 50 countries around the world participating in the movement. They claim it is a way of connecting fashion lovers with those who made their clothes.

Not everyone lives

and works in a country with safe workplaces and the tragedy at Rana Plaza drove that issue home. What is even more surprising is that many brands did not even know whether their clothing had been produced in the Rana Plaza building.

This is a bit of a call to arms as people can get involved by being aware of where their clothing is made, the conditions the workers endure and the impacts a disaster not only has on an industry but on families.

The idea behind wearing your clothes inside out is to have people stop and take a look at the labels and think about where their garments are made. It is a day for you to be curious about the clothes you wear - really think about your clothes and their origins.

Many of us may not be supporters of fair trade organizations and perhaps we are a little complacent about issues, but the collapse of a building with thousands of workers killed did have an impact on many popular brand names. For one day, it probably

will not hurt to take a look at the label on your shirt or pants and stop and ponder just for one moment.

Neighbourly advice

according to Ed

–– a spiritual column by contributor Raymond Maher

www.accordingtoed.com

Don’t get your hopesup – then you cannot

be disappointed Ed, my neighbour next door, had to rub it in. “You should never expect much. You get all excited and positive, and then things turn to sawdust on you.” For a week, Ed knew that I was really pleased with four new tires on my red Pontiac, but a problem de-veloped with them. He saw me leave for Yorkton in the morning where one of the new tires went fl at and it could not be fi xed. Much later, Ed saw me coming home down our street with my spare tire on my car, the little doughnut type. It was a long drive at less

than 80 on the number 10 highway from Yorkton to Melville. “Sure, had your hopes up with those tires only to fi nd yourself run-ning on a doughnut,” Ed said with a way too much delight.

I have to admit I am in one of those stretches where some of us fi nding ourselves skidding from one minor crisis to another. First, I was preaching in a dignifi ed way for an evening Lenten Service and the tiny microphone on my lapel clip fell off for no reason. Worse yet, the whole group of worshipers perked up like it was a blessing from heaven when they could no longer hear me. Then I picked up a new plastic jar of Coffee-mate a day or two later and I knocked it off the counter. The lid came off dusting half the kitchen. My wife was away on a retreat and I had been avoiding any cleaning until nearer her return, but I was busted and forced to clean up the white dust. Then my son phoned from Saskatoon sharing that they were coming to visit in three days. They were moving to Ontario for his wife’s new job. The crisis is that our granddaughter who spends several weeks a year with us will be far away in Ontario instead of

Saskatoon. Ed says I should not

hope for anything except little and big annoyances. Any day can get worse instead of better. Ed does seem to have a point when it comes to Holy Week. Jesus entered Jerusalem in triumph after His raising of Lazarus from the dead. The people waved palm branches and hailed Him king. Within a few days the people were willing to cry loudly, “Crucify Him.” When the people favoured Jesus, His enemies waited for an opportunity to kill Him. For 30 pieces of silver, Judas Iscariot was willing to betray Jesus. His other disciples ran off when this happened at His arrest. Only Peter followed Jesus at a distance but denied knowing Him three times. Jesus was crucifi ed. He suffered on the cross for the sins of all although He was sinless. He died and was buried in a tomb. Those closest to Jesus saw no reason to hope at all. When we try to fi nd hope in the events of our lives it will be temporary or elusive. On the third day, Jesus arose from the dead. He confi rmed forever that there is victory of life over death for all who have faith in Him. As He arose from the dead so shall we. It is our permanent hope.

Big Bad Wolves - Light week with only one notable one and it is good. A demented foreign (I know folks subtitles . . . ick) thriller about a deeply disturbed child killer and the (possible) revenge the parent and a detective take on him. Championed by Quentin Tarantino (though his love of the Lone Ranger makes me question his taste lately) this Israeli set comedy/thriller/horror starts with some kids playing and switches to horror when one disappears as the latest victim in a long line of child murders. After a series of mistakes frees the suspect killer, a rogue cop kidnaps him and plans to extract the truth. Complications arise when the parent of the latest victim gets involved and it becomes a cat and mouse and cop game to get to the truth. Marvellous movie, intentionally funny, horribly violent and very well acted (an actor called Rotem Keinan is brilliant as the alleged psychopath). I know many will avoid it because of the evil subtitles, but you are missing a great one here. (18A)

Funk adds another chapter with memoir

■ Daniel BushmanThe Watrous Manitou

From fi ction to fact, author Wes Funk is launching his latest book, Wes Side Story May 1. The author, who has written three other books, has spent countless hours creating his memoir, which will be released at McNally Robinson in Saskatoon.

Funk, who spends time living at Manitou Beach as well as in Saskatoon said, “This is my fi rst non-

fi ction and I have never published anything like this before. I feel like I am in a new world.”

The memoir fi rst began fi nding its way onto pieces of paper in 2008 and a year or two later it was being woven together. “Then by about 2010 I realized that this might be something I will have to publish.”

After deciding to go ahead with his book, Funk has spent the past few years doing fact checking, revisions, editing and now launching the work. “It has been the biggest writing project ever for me.”

Recently, Funk has put the fi nal touches into the book by contacting those involved with the work to ensure facts are right. The author said the feedback has been really good by those involved.

“The book is basically divided in two sections. The fi rst half of it is about my escapades growing up in very rural Saskatchewan. I was a rock and roll obsessed kid, super hero and pop culture loving. I was being raised in an old-school Mennonite home. There were stumbling blocks and times where my parents and I butted heads.”

The next portion of Funk’s book then moves to his more recent years as a published author. “That has led to some interesting moments and interesting road trips . . . just little escapades of the publishing and media world of the province.”

Funk said his book contains a little something for everybody and with his prairie-boy wit and honesty, fi ction takes a back seat and Funk tells his story.

“I found that one memory unlocked another and I remembered a lot of things, especially from way

back that I forgot about.”The book also allowed

him to interview his parents and he was able to re-bond with them.

After growing up in Mayfair, near North Battleford Funk said people from Saskatchewan will recognize a lot of different provincial entertainment and culture, like that from the 1980s.

“There are also a lot of iconic Saskatchewan places like the crooked trees by Hafford and Manitou Beach of course comes up a few times. I think every corner of the province comes up.”

The front cover of his memoir is also unique

and features a caricature of Funk’s face. “At fi rst I wasn’t crazy about it but I love it and think it turned out great.”

The memoir will be found in a few local stores in Watrous and Manitou Beach and Funk hopes in the library at some point.

The author said the novelty of seeing his work in a library or book store never wears off. “Every time I am in McNally Robinson or Indigo in Saskatoon, I always have to visit my books.”

Along with friend Allan Kehler, the pair will launch their books in just over a week and are looking forward to it.

Minimum wage going up Minimum wage in the province is going up come

October. The Saskatchewan government will increase the minimum wage from $10 to $10.20 per hour Oct. 1. The government said it is also going to introduce regulations to provide for regular indexing of the minimum wage each year.

“Increasing the minimum wage will give minimum wage earners more disposable income and improve their standard of living,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. “Indexation of the minimum wage will provide security for minimum wage earners and ensure predictability for business

owners in the province. Since 2007, we have increased the minimum wage in Saskatchewan six times and have gone from $7.95 to $10.20. That’s 28 per cent, which is well ahead of the rate of infl ation.”

The new minimum wage regulation will include an indexation formula that will be based on the equal weighting of the percentage changes in the Consumer Price Index and average hourly wage for the previous year.

The regulations will also see a change in the minimum wage announced on or before June 30 of each year, with that change coming in effect Oct. 1 of the same year.

Brkich candidate for Arm River■ Daniel BushmanThe Watrous Manitou

After being elected in 1999, MLA Greg Brkich has represented constituents in Arm River and come the next election will be the Saskatchewan Party candidate once again. Brkich won a contested nomination Apr. 15 as he beat out Clark Puckett.

“It’s very humbling and I look forward to being able to represent the constituents of Arm River in the next election,” said Brkich.

Re-elected in 2003, 2007 and in 2011, Brkich has also served as the Deputy Speaker and Chair of the Committee of the Whole and was appointed as Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture - Agriculture Programs Innovation Initiative. Brkich was also a vice-chair of the caucus standing policy committee on I n t e r g o v e r n m e n t a l Affairs and Justice and was a member of the legislature’s standing committee on Intergovernmental Affairs and Justice as well as the Private Bills House Committee.

He currently serves as a member of Treasury Board, a member of Investment Board, a member of Privileges House Committee and Chair of the Crowns and Central Agencies Caucus Policy Committee and Standing Committees.

“The government continues to invest in our towns and rural municipalities through

a steady stable formula allowing them to continue to grow,” Brkich said. “We are also helping our seniors by adding new long-term care beds. We have built or are in the process of building 15 new long-term care facilities across Saskatchewan, which includes the new facility that opened in Watrous.

“I am also very proud that the government has

put forward yet another balanced budget, our seventh consecutive,” Brkich said. “Through balanced budgets and controlled spending we are keeping taxes low and ensuring Saskatchewan remains on a path of steady growth.”

With Brkich’s nomination as the candidate for Arm River, the Saskatchewan Party has nominated eight

candidates for the next provincial election.

The lights went dark in half of the NHL stadiums last week as teams that didn’t make the playoffs cleaned out their lockers, said goodbye and walked away.

Just as quickly, the puck dropped on the NHL playoffs last Wednesday, only one Canadian team made the post season this year, the fi rst time that has happened in over 50 years. The Montreal Canadiens are the only hope to bring the Stanley Cup back to country where it was born but a lot of hockey needs be played before that can happen. With the playoff picture crystal clear teams are now hard at work, studying their opponents and working last minute details to help ensure playoff success.

The St. Louis Blues are one such team. The Blues

ended the season with an unimpressive record. Their line up has also taken a huge hit, losing eight players to injury, most of whom are still questionable to play in the post season. After being a favourite to win it all this year the Blues are now in tough against the Chicago Blackhawks who they are facing in the fi rst round.

While we know the teams that made the playoffs, who wins and loses isn’t clear. As always, anything can happen. Upsets are always glorious, but picking a clear cut winner this year is more diffi cult than it has been in recent years. Many would point out that the Boston Bruins, who won the President’s trophy for fi nishing atop the NHL standings are the favourites to win. But as we saw a few years ago with the Vancouver Canucks who won the President’s trophy, the regular season is over, forget what you did and look ahead to what must be done.

For the fi rst time ever, the NHL has gone with a bracket style playoff picture. In the past, once a team won a series they would be reseeded based upon where they fi nished in the regular season and where their next opponent fi nished. That format is gone and the bracket is here! Just like the NCAA, fans can now make their picks all the way from the fi rst round to the Stanley Cup fi nals. This is exactly what I’ve done, and to make it interesting Dan has done the same too. We’re by no means experts and no prizes are at stake, but we thought we would share our picks and maybe whoever wins will wear the other teams jersey for a day. With pride, and knowing I don’t look good in yellow and red on the line, here are our picks for this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.

In the Western Conference Dan and I are in agreement. The Colorado Avalanche will beat the Minnesota Wild, the St. Louis Blues will fall to the Chicago Blackhawks, the Anaheim Ducks will defeat the Dallas Stars and the San Jose Sharks will once again fall in fi rst round against the Los Angeles Kings.

The Eastern Conference is a different story. Dan and I agreed on all but one series. The Detroit Red Wings’ young guns will not have enough fi re power to over come the mighty Boston Bruins. The lone Canadian team, the Montreal Canadiens will defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Pittsburgh Penguins will continue their playoff dominance by easily getting rid of the Colombus Blue Jackets and the one disagreement Dan and I had was who would be victorious between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers. Dan picked the Rangers and I went with the Flyers.

In round two it gets more interesting. Dan and I agreed that the President’s trophy winning Bruins defeat the Canadiens. Dan picked the Rangers to defeat the Penguins while I chose the Flyers to dominant the Penguins. We came together on the rest of the second round, both picking the Ducks to beat the Kings and the Blackhawks to defeat the Avalanche.

The conference fi nals is where the rubber really meets the road. Dan picked the Bruins to beat Martin St. Louis and the Rangers, while I picked the Bruins to defeat the Penguins. In the Eastern conference fi nal, Dan and I both agreed that the Ducks would knock out the defending champion Blackhawks.

In the championship round Dan and I both selected the Bruins to face off against the Ducks for the right to hoist Lord Stanley above their heads, we each fi gured the Bruins would come out on top.

How will it all play out? I’m no expert but I do know it’s going to be an exciting spring in the NHL.

■ Daniel BushmanThe Watrous Manitou

A fresh blanket of snow last week did not help golfers hoping to hit the links a little earlier. But if above-normal temperatures aided with sunshine decide to stay for a little longer than a few days, then the Manitou Beach Golf Course could be teeing off for another year in a few weeks.

Pro shop manager Ralph Eliasson said before the snow arrived late last week, the course was coming along. “If we get some sunshine it won’t take much. We do have some water to pump and some greens to clean up.”

This year Jordan Bray takes over from

Driving towards golf seasonRon Gross as the greens superintendent. Eliasson said, “Ron will work as long as Bray needs and then Gross will step away. Ron has been there 28 years and is an awesome guy. That was like his back yard all those years. He and (wife) Dianne have taken compassion and care of it.”

Eliasson said new windows have been installed in the restaurant and pro shop along with a few other items in time for the season. “We are adding some new patio furniture for the deck and new equipment for the course.”

Hole number fi ve will also see development of a new trail going to it. There may also be tall trees or mesh installed to help

prevent golf balls from sailing towards hole three.

“We had a good year,” Eliasson said. Two large sheds were also constructed, one to house motorized carts and the other by the maintenance shop.

On this year’s executive is president John Gunderson, Chas Potter, Melanie Manson, John Richards and Scott and Ryan Collins.

There are also a handful of tournaments slated this year including the Partners’ Classic which goes in early June along with a senior mens’ open. The event is a two person scramble which precedes the senior open in August.

A ladies’ fun day has been penciled in for a day

in July while the annual GJM Memorial will be held the fi rst weekend in August. The ladies’ open tees off in August while the couples’ classic and members tournament go in September.

The Watrous Rotary is sponsoring the junior golf program which is being led by Potter. In an effort to generate more interest from junior golfers, Eliasson said the course is offering free golf in July and August during Wednesday mornings.

“Last year we had six junior members and I would love to see 60.”

Aside from that, Eliasson said, “Everything is rolling along. Now all we need is some nice weather.”

■ Daniel Bushman/The Watrous Manitou After winning a Grey Cup with the Saskatchewan Roughriders last year, quarterback Darian Durant has found himself with a contract extension. Last week, gen-eral manager Brendan Taman announced Durant signed a multi-year extension with the team. As per team policy, fi nancial details of the contract were not released. In his eighth year as a pivot for the team, Durant com-peted in 16 regular season starts last year. At the conclu-sion of the season, the 31-year-old threw for 4,154 yards and a league leading 31 touchdowns. He was named a West Division All-Star for the second time in his career.

Riders ink Durant Sporting number four, the University of North Caro-lina product competed in the West semi-fi nal and West fi nal totaling 550 passing yards with fi ve touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding 10 carries for 115 yards rushing. In the 101st Grey Cup game, Durant added another 245 passing yards and three touchdowns, helping lead the team to a 45-23 victory. Durant currently ranks third all-time in franchise passing attempts with 2,842, completions with 1,745, passing yards with 22,711 and passing touchdowns with 125.

Apr. 14I am sad to write that

local resident Margaret Brawn passed away Apr. 2. We send condolences to her family and friends. Margaret’s funeral was Saturday, Apr. 5 and attended by our local red hatters group.

With sadness too, we extend sincere condolences to friends and family of wee Maxwell Leslie who passed away Mar. 29. Maxwell was the beautiful son of Steven and Cindy and grandson of Al and Linda Leslie.

Gladly, we send happy 92nd birthday greetings to Meta Rizer (nee Howie) who used to work for Dr. Stipe in his clinic near main beach.

There are several past and present residents who are ailing and we send you all get well wishes. Being ill is not fun but to know the community is rooting for you hopefully cheers you up.

Communities in Bloom is gearing up for another year of activities. Our fi rst meeting will be Apr. 23 and everyone is welcome to attend at the village offi ce. If you are new to the community, this is an opportunity to make new friends and get to know your neighbours better.

For bingo dates please see the coming events page.

More and more geese are around, as well as a few hawks. The local bunnies are changing colour, some a drab grey and others pale brown - all good signs of spring arriving. No robins yet. The lake ice is getting slushy.

I hope you had a very Happy Easter and enjoyed all those forbidden chocolate eggs! Maybe we will see robins by then . . .Apr. 21

Not the warmest Easter on record but I hope everyone managed to have an enjoyable time and sample the delights of Easter eggs and other traditional foods.

Apr. 14, I went along to the Quill Plains Museum Association meeting in

Humboldt and met a lady from St. Brieux. She was quite excited as she told how Florence Tetreault, a lady from her community, used to bring children in a two-ton truck to the YWCA for weekend trips during the 1940s and 1950s. Florence has celebrated her 100th birthday and now lives in Saskatoon. So now I wonder if other folks have similar stories? Care to share? Please.

At the meeting, it was very interesting to hear about what the other museums in the Quill Plains area were doing to promote their own local histories. Our group received a lot of encouragement and learned much. Museums

and heritage centres in small towns do seem to receive lots of local support as they are recognized as valuable assets in their communities.

Yes, the lake is still frozen and still no sign of the robins.

Colonsay School news submitted by Sandra Moen, vice principal

The Colonsay School SRC held a pep rally Friday to wish all badminton players good luck in the upcoming playoffs. It was fun and informative. I personally loved the cheers: Bang, Bang and my all-time favourite, the Banana Cheer.

Junior badminton playoffs were held last week. The teams need to progress through three rounds of competition where they fi nally play for the district title. This year’s team consisted of Skylar Grey, Braeden Kobialko, Desiray Holland, Jessica Sopatyk, Geraime Brochu, Desiree Kindrat, Payne Wylie, Reece Davies, Wyatt Holland, Kiana Hollman, Alysa Burns, Max Heise, Ethyn Beggs, Brooklynn Udell, Jade Procyshyn, Layne Matechuk, Luc

Kirk and Starr Ballantyne. After a great fi rst round, a few teams moved forward to the second round. Brooklyn Udell and Jade Procyshyn advanced to the district fi nal where they represented our school well with a fi fth place fi nish. Layne Matechuk, playing boys’ singles, fi nished fourth. However, the district champions in boys’ doubles are our own two Gr. 9 boys - Luc Kirk and Starr Ballantyne. They played hard, with each match going to three sets. In fact, the last game was a 23 - 21 win for the boys!

The senior badminton team is off to Warman for round one of playoffs. Good luck to all teams and we will keep you posted with the outcome.

Congrats to Erika Burns who plays junior Huskies club volleyball for the U17 girls team out of Saskatoon and to Daxton Moen

who plays Huskies club volleyball men’s U17 also out of Saskatoon. Erika plays the setting position, where as Daxton plays a corner hitting position. Both teams fi nished fi rst in their respective pools and made it to the medal round. Congratulations to Erika and the team who won the bronze medal and to Daxton and the team who won silver on the weekend. It was a weekend of great volleyball at the provincial level.

In the classroom, the Gr. 9 health class and Mrs. Moen have just completed videos on Safety on the Job. They have entered all their work into a contest called Work2Live sponsored by the Saskatchewan Worker’s(see page 19: COLONSAY)

OBITUARYSNIDER,

Bertha Viola(Bowman)

Bertha Snider, aged 99 years, passed away peace-fully at Watrous District Health Complex on Sunday, April 6, 2014 with family by her side.

Bertha was born on the family farm near Guernsey on January 27, 1915 to Alvah and Angeline (Knechtal) Bowman. Bertha had seven siblings, fi ve brothers and two sisters. Bertha always

spoke of a wonderful childhood in a Christian family. In her teens she decided to make a public statement of her love for God and was baptized upon her confession of faith into the Sharon Mennonite Church where she remained an active member until its closure in 2004. Bertha then transferred her membership to North Star Mennonite Church in Drake. The church has always been a large presence and concern in her life. She was a Sunday school teacher, made hundreds of pies, casseroles, etc. for church dinners, neighbours requiring help and in the community at large. Bertha attended public school to Gr. 10 at the Watrous school. Bertha married Elmer Snider, also from the Guernsey area, at the age of 19 years on October 25, 1934. They lived on a small rented farm the fi rst few years, but also spent two winters together on a homestead in the Carrot River area. These were very memorable for Bertha and ones she has always treasured. As they began their family they also purchased the farm and proceeded to develop their farming business. Bertha gave birth to three children at home on the farm with her mother being the local midwife. Their fi rstborn was a boy, Boyd, and two years later a daughter, Ruth, and after three years a second son, Leslie was born completing the family. Bertha was fi rst and foremost a dedicated mom, wife and homemaker. As a farm wife, in addition to child care, housework and cooking, she grew and preserved a huge garden, milked cows and helped with the raising of chickens, pigs and turkeys for feeding her growing family. The children remember learning many songs and stories as Bertha was milking, shelling peas and other farming activities. Bertha’s life was not an easy one. Her youngest son, Leslie had juvenile diabetes and required much special attention as a baby and especially in his teens. However, one never heard Bertha complain. Her comments were words such as, “We are never asked to handle more than we are given strength to endure.” Bertha’s hobbies included many hours of quilting, making quilts for family members, the MCC relief sale and helped make many with other members of the Sharon Mission Circle for overseas relief. She also enjoyed many hours working in the Lanigan Thrift Store.

Bertha is survived by her son Boyd (Elaine) Snider of Waterloo, Ont. and their children Corinne (Alain) Caissie and children Anik and Elise of Alina, N.B. and Carla Snider of Waterloo, Ont., her daughter Ruth (Jake) Sawatzky of Watrous, one sister-in-law Mabel Bowman of Guernsey and many nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews in her extended family. The family expresses their gratitude to all who helped through this diffi cult time and for coming to help us celebrate her life. Bertha was dearly loved and appreciated and will be sorely missed.

She was predeceased by her husband Elmer of 70 years in 2004; son Leslie in 1980; her parents, parents-in-law and all her siblings: brothers Eldon (Mabel), Alfred (Myrl), Fred, (Gladys), Bill (Violet), Clayton (Mabel) and her sisters Mabel (David) Deckert and Florence Gingrich, in-laws Irva (David) Rosenberger, Nelda (Addison) Gingrich and Ken (Doreen) Snider.

A visitation for family and friends was held at Foth-eringham’s Funeral Chapel April 11.

Funeral service was held at North Star Mennonite Church, Drake, Sask. on April 12.

Interment followed at Sharon Cemetery.Memorial donations directed to MCC or Manitou Lodge

tion, please visit www.fotheringham-mcdougall.com

IN MEMORYCARLSON - In memory of Raymond Wilfred, Mar. 1909 - Apr. 1984:

It’s so hard to believe that it’s been 30 years since that sad day, Poppa, that you left us. I guess the business of rais-ing 11 of us fi nally took its toll. It was a big job for you and mother but I think that you should be proud of the work that you did. We were taught most of the important stuff in life and a lot of it we learned by your example. I know that there is quite a crowd of loved ones up there now with you and I’m sure that you’re enjoying each other - no stresses of daily living to get in the way.

We love you and miss you and it always amazes me how often we think and speak of you - after 30 years all of the memories are still so fresh.

- With love from your family.

RICHARDSON - In loving memory of our uncles Andy, Aug. 11, 1918 - Mar. 11, 1994 and Percy, July 17, 1920 - Apr. 25, 1998 (the boys):

With us in our thoughts.- Ivan, Joan, Howard and families.

She now passed her white belt and has moved onto half white, half yellow belt. Between each portion of the test, Mrs. Olorenshaw used a breathing technique to keep her nerves in check and her stress

down. She was the only one being tested in front of an audience and her breathing technique helped her succeed. Great work and what a great lesson for all of our students on handling stress.

While the services do not replace a visit to a physician, they provide an opportunity to potentially bridge the gap that may prevent a person from getting continual care.

McLean said if people are unable to see a physician for several days or if an emergency supply of medication is needed

because it was left at home during travel, a pharmacist may provide an interim supply.

“These services are unique to each personal situation and interim supplies are considered on a case by case basis.”

Along with extending current prescriptions, pharmacists completing required training have also been allowed to prescribe for minor ailments. McLean said the service allows

pharmacists to assist a patient in confi rming a self-diagnosed ailment and if necessary, provide appropriate prescription therapy.

While a patient is required to have an interview with the pharmacist and a consultation, it will provide an opportunity to determine if the condition is correctly self-diagnosed. From there, treatment options based

on guidelines set out by the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacists will be used.

McLean said, “This service is limited to specifi c conditions which include cold sores, canker sores, oral thrush, mild to moderate acne, diaper rash, insect bites and allergic rhinitis (allergies).”

There is no charge to the patient receiving the care as it is subsidized by Saskatchewan Health.

The provincial

government has also established the Saskatchewan Medication Assessment Program which provides a patient with a review of medications including those from over the counter.

McLean said the aim for the program is to allow patients a better understanding of why they are taking certain medications.

The comprehensive

review with the program is often done in conjunction with a bubble pack service. McLean said the service involves a special daily packaging system which is put in place for a patient to allow for ease of administration and compliance.

McLean said the government offers to cover the cost of blister packaging fees for those at least 65 years old and residing in the community.
