Traditionally tanks have been desludged by the simple manual operation of a base level mounted valve. When an operator manually opens the valve, sludge flows into the chamber, and ceases when it is closed. Whilst simple, this system is labour intensive and its success is dependent upon the competence of the operator. For years there has been increasing pressure to find an effective and reliable means of automating the process over a 24 hour/7day period. To mechanise the process Hidrostal developed the Auto-desludger.

The Hidrostal Auto-desludger consists of a geared motor driving a pulley through a magnetic coupling. When the motor starts the magnetic coupling is engaged and a plug valve is lifted away from the bellmouth to allow desludging to take place. The plug valve is operated by the use of a timer controlled electro/mechanical winch assembly which allows for variable timed desludging. A control panel is either supplied individually for each desludger or, if there is more than one desludger on site, a common panel can be supplied to operate multiple units.

Hidrostal’s Automatic Winch type Desludger can be used on any type of primary or secondary sedimentation tank. The equipment is designed to enable completely automatic desludging to be achieved under hydrostatic head conditions.

The Hidrostal Auto Desludger is the proven solution.

The Hidrostal Auto Desludger is housed in a quality built weather proof enclosure and can be installed on any type of sedimentation tank chamber.

A timer is used to determine both desludging time and frequency. When desludging is complete the magnetic coupling is disengaged and the plug valve closes with a positive seal onto the bellmouth.

Installation can be carried out in a single day. It is simple and requires no additions other than a single phase power supply.

The Hidrostal automatic winch desludger can be used instead of, or to replace, the following systems:

Actuated Bellmouths/Gate Valves

This system requires regular maintenance, usually a 3 phase power supply, and will not fail safe without expensive additions.

Air Lift System

This requires regular blower maintenance and often regular adjustment. The system is often unreliable particularly on thicker primary sludges and can also create odour problems. A 3 phase power supply is usually required and the blower unit requires weather protection.

Surface Mounted Pump Systems

These usually have higher power usage due to motor size, capital cost can be high, and weather protection and regular maintenance are required.

This method makes use of the Hidrostal A2Q pump with its screw centrifugal impeller and its ability to draw sludge from the bottom of sedimentation tanks. It is positioned in a small chamber within the tank to ensure that the pump is primed and is controlled by a timer to automatically desludge the tank.

This method is suitable for mechanical scraped radial tanks. The plug valve is operated by a lever mechanism, actuated by a cam attached to the end of the rotating bridge. The desludging time is determined by the bridge speed and the cam length. Desludging takes place once per revolution of the rotating bridge.
