Automatic Stirring Gas Coupling for Steel Ladles – Safe and Reliable

Steel bath stirring is a basic function for reaching the required chemistry and temperature of a steel heat. Stirring shall be available during the entire ladle metallurgy cycle from tapping to casting. Besides the porous plugs, the reliability of the stirring gas connection to the ladle is of crucial importance. Manual connection of the gas supply to the ladle is a high risk operation.

Paul Wurth’s quick and reliable automatic gas coupling system allows all coupling operations in steel-plants to be remote controlled and automatically executed.

Functionality

The system consists of one upper coupling part on each ladle and one lower coupling part fixed to each treatment station or on each ladle transfer car.

Both parts are movable, the upper female cone allowing a vertical displacement and the lower male cone allowing a transverse shifting in two directions from a zero position, thus assuring a tight connection despite differences in the posi-tioning tolerances of the ladles.

All parts are fabricated from high heat resistant steel.

As the ladle is lowered onto the treatment station or transfer car, the stirring gas flow starts in due time before full engagement of the two cones, thus providing for clean mating surfaces and a subsequent tight connection.

Application

The automatic coupling of the stirring gas to the porous plug allows following operations possibilities:

` Stirring during tapping of the BOF or EAF vessel

` Stirring during ladle transfer to the different treatment stations (ladle furnace / alloying station / wire injection / powder spreader...)

` Stirring at the vacuum degassing vessel

` Stirring at the ladle turret

` Stirring during slag skimming (ladle in tilted position)

` Automatic connection to two or three porous plugs can be ensured by one single coupling. Separate flow regulation follows via remote control.
