Wow! I can't believe one year ago a group of wonderful students came together and created a magazine to share our

ideas, thoughts, values, and city to the students at our university. A year later we are back and better than ever. We have new freshman

who are eager to display their talents and returning sophomores, juniors and seniors who are ready to improve and give their best. MM is more than

just a magazine, we are a family, we grow together, we learn together and we have fun together. MM allows us to share our common interests and come

together to give the students at our university an entertaining magazine they can read in their spare time.

We hope this school year will be amazing for everyone. MM would love to hear your thoughts and feedback so we can make this magazine for you the

students. We want to offer the latest news and events that are happening around Suzhou and Shanghai. Join us on wechat to stay up to date with local news and events. If you see any of us walking on campus feel free

to stop us and give us your opinions, we can't succeed without you so help us make MM representative of our student body.

We hope you enjoy this issue!

The Ebola Epidemic2014/3/27—2014/12/4

No Need to Panic

What You Need to Know about Ebola

Last weekend, a friend on-line asked me if people who were infected with the Ebola virus actually turned into zombies. She retweeted me a piece of fake news claiming the government was hiding this horrible bio-transition, which was a completely unfounded and baseless argument to make. It was a ridiculous question she asked but it actually stems from the fact that the public isn't fully aware about this epidemic. Since the majority of us are not sure what this virus does, this questions brought to light the global panic that is spreading about Ebola. For e x a m p l e , n e w s p a p e r h e a d l i n e s t h r o u g h o u t America have "Ebola" in big large bold print on the front page.

However, irrational panic never solves our problems. As the Liberian soccer superstar and former presidential candidate George Weah said, “We should hold ourselves responsible for the many deaths today because once it was declared that something called Ebola is coming into our society, a lot of people did not take it serious.” Only with a common effort between the international community can this deadly disease successfully be defeated. Here are some important facts one should know when talking about the Ebola Virus so we can put a stop to the rumors.

Page 5: Autumn Edition (2014)

Increase over time in the cases and deaths

during the 2014 outbreak

Background of the 2014 outbreak

On Sept. 30th, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the diagnosis of the first patient infected with the deadly Ebola virus in the USA. The patient was found infected with Ebola and was placed in “strict isolation” at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. The Ebola news begot worldwide panic, including Wall Street. U.S. stocks dropped more than 1 percent; shares of airlines and other transportation enterprises declined as well as small-cap stocks extended recent losses along with the Russell 2000.

Tracing back to the spread of the Ebola virus in West Africa during 2014, it started with the announcement of a major Ebola outbreak in Guinea by the World Health Organization(WHO) in March. It then rapidly spread to Liberia and adjacent areas such as Sierra Leone. This became the largest Ebola outbreak ever documented. On August 8th, WHO declared the epidemic to be an international public health emergency. The situation in Liberia's capital, Monrovia, was described as "catastrophic" and "deteriorating daily" when the health system was shut down. Ebola also threatened food security because farmers in Liberia were no longer willing to work in groups and ships of imports were not coming as often. In late August, the disease had spread to Nigeria and Senegal. According to WHO, there are 7,192 suspected cases and 3,286 deaths as of Sept. 29th. We must wonder if these numbers are vastly underestimated. At least 216 healthcare workers are among the death toll.

Electron micrograph of an Ebola virus virion

Created by CDC microbiologist Cynthia Goldsmith, this colorized transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology displayed by an Ebola virus virion.

Symptoms of Ebola

Ebola virus disease (EVD), also known as Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF), is an infectious disease with a high mortality rate. Symptoms normally start 8–10 days after contracting the virus but the incubation period ranges from 2 days to three weeks.

EVD is characterized by a sudden onset of fever and malaise, accompanied by other nonspecific signs and symptoms, such as myalgia (muscle pain), sore throat, headache, vomiting, rash, and diarrhea. Patients with severe forms of the disease may develop hemorrhagic symptoms (to bleed both within the body and externally) and multi-organ dysfunction, including hepatic damage, renal failure, and central nervous system involvement, leading to shock and death. The fatality rate can vary from 40-90%.

Page 6: Autumn Edition (2014)

Symptoms of Ebola

By Mikael Häggström

Transmission of Ebola Ebola is not a water-borne or food-borne

illness and is not transmitted through the air. Fruit bats are believed to be a carrier and may spread the virus without actually being affected. In outbreak settings, Ebola virus is typically first spread to humans after contact with infected wildlife like non-human primates. Then, it is spread person-to-person through direct contact with bodily fluids such as, but not limited to, blood, urine, sweat, semen, and breast milk, or with objects like needles that have been contaminated with the virus. The disease is only spread by direct contact with the secretions from someone who is showing signs of infection. It can still be transmitted to persons who touch the body during funeral preparations while doing postmortem operations. Only by laboratory testing can a patient be diagnosed with Ebola infection.

Treatment & prevention of EVD Current treatment of EVD is primarily supportive in nature, including pain management as well

as medications for nausea, fever and anxiety. Blood products and other regulators of coagulation have also been used in some cases. Early treatment usually increases the chances of survival.

There are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or drugs to prevent or treat Ebola. Although the FDA has allowed two drugs, ZMapp and an RNA interference drug called TKM-Ebola, to be used in infected people under "expanded access" programs during the 2014 outbreak, experimental Ebola vaccines and treatments are in the early stages of product development, which have not yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness, and the supply is very limited.

Despite all this, the possibility of becoming infected with this virus is minimal for students. It becomes another story if you happen to travel to an area already affected by an Ebola outbreak. If you do travel during the upcoming months, make sure to avoid any contact with blood, body fluids and bats or other non-human primates. Also be aware and stay away from graveyards or burial ritual areas or hospitals where Ebola patients are being or have been treated. The Ebola virus can be eliminated by heating object for 30 to 60 minutes at 60 °C or boiling for 5 minutes. Some liquid solvents such as alcohol-based products, detergents, sodium or calcium hypochlorite (bleach), and other suitable disinfectants at appropriate concentrations can be used as disinfectants. After you return from your travels, monitor your health for 21 days and seek medical care immediately if you develop any of the symptoms for Ebola.

It has been a long time since we have been amazed at a singing program until recently one appeared on the ZheJiang TV channel. This program is called the 'Voice of China' and it soon caught on with many celebrities. It became so popular that Feng Xiaogang, Liwen and Wu Peici promoted the show on their micro-blogs. When the first episode of the first season aired, some net citizens expressed their opinions by saying it was the best program of the summer.

It is similar to 'A Bite of China' in that the Voice of China (VOC) brings us all together. It brings the country together as we root for people who are following their dreams. Though the former is related to taste and food culture , the latter is related to hearing and the progress of our music culture. They both made it their goal to grab the audience’s heart, and the Voice of China grabs the heart and combines the soul of the muse, giving us goose bumps as we listen to the music.

This program, as you can see, has outweighed many other programs in the following aspects. ZheJiang TV Channel had to buy the copyright from Holland and it is the first time one program is commissioned entirely by the broadcast and production unit. Distinguishing itself from other programs , the VOC did a good job in importing the copyright and it has caused no conflicts so far. Four judges are given the chance to evaluate the musicians by using their own personal experience of working in the entertainment industry to encourage and guide newcomers who have dreams and the talent to walk along the road of music. The judges are involved in a very easygoing and approachable way so that they do not intimidate the participants. They are so in love with the music that you can witness them crying as they watch them hit such beautiful notes.

Thirdly, the host Hua Shao only announces the stage with only the most necessary words to keep the talking to a minimum because this is a show designed for contestants to sing and the last thing the host should do is not hand the stage over to them. Also, the contestants can wear whatever they want so they can show their true personality, they also can sing whatever they want to sing during the chair-turning period ( This is where judges turn their back to the stage until they hear a satisfying voice). As long as they sing well , they all shout, dance, and hug each other, getting completely lost in the music.

Hate it or love it, you can't stop it from being a hit.

How it was born

Since 2000, producer Chen Wei has been in charge of making news programs and documentaries. It was in 2011 when he got impressed by 'The Voice of America' and a musical project named 'Unique' which was at the time under the control of the ZheJiang TV station. "My inspiration comes from the two-way election held every year in my university. Since we have the same innovative orientation they’ve been doing quite well from the idea, so maybe I can just bring it to the TV screen" said Chen Wei. He is proud that he shares this great innovation with these foreign principals and also finds it pitiful that we can't display a program with that terrific impact without looking outside for help.

As Chen was constructing the details of the show, he found that he could come up with many fresh and new ideas but it wasn't always as easy to implement. Every idea took hours to plan for and most of the time he would find that the idea after trying to push it into the show just wouldn't work. The more he tried the harder things became, he was constantly trying to find ways to improve the program using the ideas he learned from foreign eyes.

Interestingly, he made an analogy that our food shows tell the audience to put some condiments in proper order while Europeans tend to name it based on their quantity. That is to say, every process, every staff member, everything must be timed perfectly…every detail needed to be exact. Only in this way can the audience be completely satisfied with what they are watching, if they are not satisfied than the show could not be successful.

Page 9: Autumn Edition (2014)

Shady Side?

Some of you might get angry when you saw the ‘result sheet ’ on the Internet which says Chen Bing is bound to be the winner.

But it seems more of a sensationalist piece of journalism designed to attract us and bring in more viewers.

After showing up on stage, Chen Bing has become kind of popular because of her beautiful face and her yelling style of singing. I have to say I was deeply impressed by her.

Then a ‘net cit izen’ blurted out her background, I guess you already know about it: her family is super rich and she has participated in many other talent shows! Immediately, she became the biggest topic of VOC gossip and split the audience in half with 50% filled with admiration and 50% full of hatred. But who would be able to find out her stories that quickly? Either the producers are using her or she is clever to use the VOC…

Anyway, the stage now belongs to Zhang Bichen, as Chen Bing was kind of ‘pushed away from the spotlight’.

We audience members should stay focused on the contestants music path and be excited for their progress!

R-RESPONSIBILITYOur class is called Sea Horse Class, which only holds 20 students. The children are divided into 4 groups; every group has a leader. What varies from the time when I was in kindergarten is that the leader is not appointed by the teacher but voted by the kids themselves. Every day before coming back home, they will vote for their leader for the next day according to the performance they have had today. Don’t worry they won’t cheat; they are much more honest than most of the adults I have met. I once noticed that Jacob voted for Blues, a boy who is always naughty, but because he helped Nancy move the chairs on that day, Jacob voted for him. Because of this rule, almost every student has the chance to be the leader. Everyone will try their best to win the trust of their classmates. During my tenure, the leader should take responsibility for anything that happened in group work, even including when the are playing with the building blocks. They are not allowed to call out, “Miss Shen, Jim took my toy away!” “Miss Shen, Candy hit me on the head.” NO, it’s none of my business. It’s yours. Your leader should be responsible for that. The truth is that every child enjoys this seemingly tough job. They can handle it so well that they don’t want my interference. “ I can do it! It’s my responsibility!” This is the most frequent sentence that I heard during that time.

The drawing class is always the favorite class for these angels. It’s time for them to use colors to express their ideas. One day, the teacher taught students to draw lotuses in the lake. After the teacher made the demonstration, the kids tried to draw the picture by themselves. “Why did you mark a red line on that place? The clouds should be white! Draw it again!” the teacher said angrily to Victoria, a quiet little girl. Victoria said nothing, continuing to draw in frustration. I went to her, squatted down, and asked: “Victoria, could you tell me why you drew a red line?” “It’s wind.” she said carefully, but the eyes started shining.

“Why is the wind red?”I asked continuously. “Because when lotuses bloom, it is hot. The red reminds me of the feeling of being hot.”Victoria answered cheerfully. I was deeply surprised and moved by her answer “Great work! Victoria! You are very creative and imaginative!” I am convinced that man is born with creativity; the ability to innovate is developed by our stimulation and protection. It reminds me of a TED Talk called "How School Kills Creativity" by Ken Robinson. I don’t want to be that kind of teacher who kills children’s attempt at being creative. The childhood should focus on maximizing a child's creative ability.

When they smile, the flowers bloom; when they grin, the sky turns clean; when they giggle, the birds warble. They are children, they are lovely kids, bringing warmth and vigor to our world. I love them, I love them for their innocence as well as the “chaos” they make.

Fortunately, I have had the opportunity to be admitted into an international kindergarten as an intern. During this one-month internship, I associated with these angels for the whole day. This allowed me to become aware and realize what factors enable the children to RIDE on the Path of Success.

I-INNOVATION

There is Chinese saying that goes like this, “nothing can be achieved without rules and order”. However, what I want to talk about is not rules set by others but by ourselves. That is called self-discipline. The children in my class are at the age when they can’t sit quietly in their seat for even 20 minutes. Thus, it becomes very significant to be able control ourselves. If the children want to go to the toilet during class time, they should raise their hands and ask for permission instead of going out of the classroom directly. When playing games in a group, they are supposed to abide by the rules instead of doing whatever they want to do. Someone must sort out the building blocks he played with just now, and then he can play with jigsaw puzzles. These ideas should occur to the children’s minds naturally. Only in this way can they do everything in order spontaneously in

A child is always the representative of energy; they are full of passion when they meet any challenge. Their healthy attitude really means a lot. The children in my class have exercise time twice a day. They usually either just dance or play a sports game. This is quite different from us, all the children endeavor to do this exercise and win the game. They get most excited for Swimming class. They get an all-round fun exercise when they are allowed to go swimming, which is also one of the most effective ways to stay healthy. Besides doing exercises, a healthy diet also plays an important role. Most of the children are picky eaters. They always say, “I don’t like carrots.” “I hate vegetables.” “I only eat meat” "NO", I always say "NO" to them. “You have to eat carrots because it’s good for your eyesight.” “Your must have vegetables because they give you various vitamin and nutrients.”... The kids are often eventually persuaded. They receive my proper reasons for why they should and they decide to eat them, not always very delicious but very beneficial for our health.

In my view, Responsibility, Innovation, self-Discipline and Energy are the four main factors that should be cultivated during kindergarten. These abilities can contribute to a successful person in the future. Many parents choose to develop the children’s IQ in their early childhood but ignore the essentiality of EQ and other abilities that are required in interpersonal communication.

Perhaps it’s time for parents to change. Let the RIDE, ride their children to a bright future.

Shanghai Art

Museum

EDITOR | YUER/ MIUCA

WRITER | ALEX

With Shanghai just a high-speed train away, it is a

wonder more students do not take a day trip to experience

such a fascinating city. One place I find enjoyable is the

Shanghai Art Museum. Located in a very easy to reach

location, just take the subway to People's Square.

On October 2012 ,the museum was renamed the China Art Museum, following its move to a new location. The Shanghai Art Museum building was the former clubhouse of the Shanghai Racing Club. It sits on the west edge of People's Park, north of people's Square, which was once the Shanghai Race Course. It is also worth noting that the Shanghai Art Museum is the original  home of the Shanghai Biennale.

Actually, I didn't know that it had moved to a new location until I went to Shanghai this past National Day Holiday to visit the city and appreciate the wonderful museums it has to offer.   I never would have guessed it would have moved to a new place in just one year. Due to this, I will tell you my previous feelings  about the Shanghai Art Museum. The old Shanghai Art Museum has  four floors in total. There were many global exhibitions where  we could see numerous paintings and  pictures on the first floor. Similarly, the new Shanghai Art Museum's  first floor is also set for displaying Chinese-Foreign cooperated exhibitions.

Page 21: Autumn Edition (2014)

This summer vacation, Mexico's ambassador from Shanghai  presented a bronze statue engraved

by Hector Marin to the museum which  is called Schuetze and  Angle.

The Second floor features exhibits  from ancient China.

It tells you about Chinese history and information about

former artists' painting styles. I personally think it's really a fantastic and  excellent experience for whoever visits it.

You will become completely absorbed  in the atmosphere of the history you are

walking amongst. For example, there are some clothes on display which were worn

by our ancestors, it makes you feel like you are living in that time period.

Most of the third floor is dedicated to  modern art. Not surprisingly some items are

full of imagination and creative ambition, which will leave each person

taking away different judgments and opinions about the work on display.

Art is a form of emotion on display and getting the chance to witness what people

like you and me are creating gives us the chance to look into their life for a brief

moment. In short, their painting styles are  similar to the great artist Picasso, a man who

took a chance to be different, and today is highly regarded as one of the most

influential artists, don't you wonder who will be our generations Picasso?

The top floor is designed for some  young and upcoming artists. This floor gives them the opportunity and space to show their creative ideas.  It's is deemed estimable for today's  society to give such a place for the  young to exploit their talent. If you are interested in it, the top floor is definitely a wonderful place for you to explore. I hope you can have as much fun as I have when you decide to visit the Shanghai Art Museum. Remember, Shanghai is only 30mins away by high-speed train and a roundtrip ticket costs less than 100yuan. The last train leaves at 11:00p.m., so plan a date, surprise your girlfriend/boyfriend and take a trip to Shanghai to experience the sights, the museums, and the food.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times", Charles Dickens used that to describe the society he was living in. I believe it is also suitable to describe the era that Xiao Hong was living in—the golden era that locked her in a cage.

The famous director, Xu An Hua, unfolds Xiao Hong’s whole life in this three hour masterpiece. She shows the audience an emotional picture that makes them feel like they are living Xiao Hong's hardships.

The period from the 1920s to the 1940s is an era as boundless as the sea and the sky. A group of young people get the chance to pursue their dreams and passions with courage, hoping to one day find someone going through the same struggle, looking forward to eventually seeing their future end with them being together. Behind the scenes though that someone is falling deeply in love with other lovers.

Xiao Hong is a brilliant woman who is by all definitions as independent as they come. Living on a road in exile, from north to south, from Harbin to Hong Kong. She is trying to avoid the war, and the further we ride along on her journey the more we experience moments of war through her eyes, witnessing painful examples of what love and real life is really like.

Because of bad health, she was always pale. However, she did not let her health stop her from becoming a talented writer. The beauty, ugliness, suffering and struggle we see everyday in this world is all written about in her articles.

S h e g r a d u a t e d f r o m Northeast Army Academy, where she met Xiao Jun, who not only had a good command of writing but also per formed the mi l i tary exercises at the academy. He met Xiao Hong at the best time in his life and by that it was decided by fate that they were meant to be together. However, Xiao Jun’s macho attitude and h i s s e n s i t i v e p s y c h e prevented him from falling in love with Xiao Hong, they were destined to love but it was a love that wouldn't last forever.

If the main character of ‘ The Red Of Mansions ’ Jia Bao Yu really existed in our life, Duan Mu probably would be the closest person to resemble him. He has wealth because he is from a

r ich fami ly that prov ides h im wi th comfor tab le accommodation and an excellent education. Unfortunately, he has a weak and sick body, so later on in his life he forms a habit of laughing. Because of his frail character, he rarely comes into conflicts with other people. He inevitably appears to be weak and bookish, but to Xiao Hong, the woman he loves the most, he would do anything to have her. Eventually Xiao Hong will have to make a decision between him and Xiao Jun and Xiao Hong chooses to give Duan Mu her love.

This abuse of the heart triangle seems romantic at that times, so Xiao Hong said the following at the end of her life "I don’t know whether my work will be read after my death, but I know that my gossip will last forever". As one of the greatest writers in China during the twentieth century, her stories still today have an impact on our society. It is hard to believe she only lived to be 31 years old, a sad reminder that life is not permanent, just like those painful moments in life, those pains will fade away as well.

I must express my appreciation for the director Xu, she is a very famous woman in Hong Kong, also the actress Tang Wei and actor Feng Shao Feng and all the cast’s devotion to making such a heart wrenching film. The director took full advantage of getting the chance to reproduce Xiao Hong's life, letting us truly realize what it was like to walk in her shoes. The directing alone is one of the major reasons this film is so touching. If you enjoy Chinese Literature I think you will find this movie very inspiring.

Here comes the new season. From England to Italy, the whole European continent is falling for the new national football league and European league. So let’s see how the biggest football clubs are performing this year.

+ Real Madrid First, let’s see the defending champion of the European Champions League (ECL). During the summer, Real Madrid attracted the best shooter in the World CupJames Roderigez to become a member of the Galaxy Warship(Real Madrid's Nickname). After this signing, Real Madrid had three of the most expensive offensive players in the world on their squad. With happiness comes sadness though and Alonso and Di Maria had to take their talents to a new team.At the beginning of the season, Real Madrid suffered a lot from the implementation of the new formation that was being run. Bale

bad condition and the rest of the defensive players followed making it frustrating for fans to watch. However, their coach Ancelotti is someone who has great respect around the league, his quick adjustments bring the white warriors a new spirit. Their recent statistics are better now than before.

No one can beat them in the ECL. Is this true? I think that maybe in the group that they are placed in only one team can accomplish that mission of beating them.

+ JuventusWe can’t neglect this fact, Serie A is going downhill. Both Milans are used to playing in the ECL Cup, but this yearneither could qualify to take part in it. So the last hope for Serie A rests on Juventus' shoulders. We like to call them "the zebras". During the summer, Juventus lost their genius coach Conte to the Italian national team. They then hired head coach Allegri, who was once called "Uncle Awkward" by Chinese fans. His miserable performance for AC Milan did not leave a great impression for Juventus fans to get excited about. To everyone’s astonishment, "Uncle Awkward" has moved all of us. Juventus now has 10 goals this season and not one single goal has passed through Buffon’s(Goal Keeper)gate. Compared with last season, Juventus did very well in the ECL. Now they are second only to Antilo Madrid. Their offensive blades will get sharper as their defense continues to develop. I promise Juventus has a bright future this season.

+ LiverpoolNothing can be worse than feeling the effects of the brain drain. Luis Suarez who was the best shooter last season in the Premier League was sold to Barcelona this Summer. The 31-goal-cannon was the most significant striker for Liverpool FC. Although coach Rodgers bought several other talented players including "Super" Mario Balotelli, it may not be enough to replace Suarez. Recently Liverpool keeps losing in the battlefronts and in the most recent ECL match. They were defeated 0-1 to a much weaker rival. Who can believe if this is really the team that beat Real Madrid 4-0? This is up to coach Rodgers to figure out how to resolve this disappointing start to the season.+ FC Bayern and BvB

DortmundWhen it comes to my favorite league, forgive me for my selfishness as I talk more about the Bundesliga. No one can forget how horrible Bayern was in 2013 and through 2014, likewise BvB astonished everyone in 2013.The big two(Real Madrid and Barcelona) were unable to stop them at that moment, giving the German Football League a different look for everyoneHowever, the two super stars are going two different ways. Recently Bayern has been going smoothly in the Bundesliga and the ECL. While BvB striker Lewandovski contributed much effort in their most recent win. It is a bigger question to see if Robben is still an offensive juggernaut following the World Cup. As far as I am concerned, The key for Bayern to win is Manuel Neuer, Deutschland's national goalkeeper.

As the well-known best goalkeeper. Maybe Neuer is better than the legend-Casillias. As a boy stand in enemy’s way, Neuer is not only a defender but also a great warrior. He runs everywhere in the pitch. It updates the concept as what a traditional goalkeeper is. We call him goal-middle-player. He is really brilliant this season. We can see his grit in the pitchBvB is in a very bad position. They haven't been able to taste 3 points in the Bundesliga, but despite the slow start there they are the top club in the ECL. It’s really bizarre. The rest of the Bundesliga teams are much better than before also. The Bundesliga now is second only to the Primer League in the world of football. I wish each team could have the chance to become the champion.

Professor Zhang

As we all know, Professor Zhang is a senior expert when it comes to translating. He is admired by most of our students. I sat down to interview him by asking him the following questions so that it will allow us to get to know such a wonderful teacher better.

Q: Why you choose to teach in a college? A: As to why I want to teach at college, I think the most important thing is that it is

freer for us to teach. You know? Besides I also want to further develop and cultivate my own talent. At college you can not only teach your students but you also get the chance to learn by yourself and at the same time we can also learn from each other. I once had many chances to work as a policeman or in the public service sector. Finally, I gave up all those possibilities and I choose to come to work as a college teacher.

I would like to thank Professor Zhang for sitting down with me and having this discussion. It is important to understand as much as we can from our teacher so we can develop our skills to its full potential. University is the time of growth and preparation. How you spend your time now will tell determine your future opportunities.

Q: Throughout your career as an English teacher, have y o u e n c o u n t e r e d a n y problems?A: Sure, I think the major problem

is that most college students do not have the initiative to learn, this is actually the most import thing. Maybe this is because our middle school and primary schools focus only on students’ marks or achievements through these so called exam-oriented examinations. The teachers and even the parents are at that time constantly telling the children: If you are at college, then everything will be ok, you do not have to work hard .Actually in reality this is totally wrong and when you graduate and enter the real world you will find that these beliefs you once held were just the opposite. Once you are in college you should devote most of your time to something you are really interested in and bring your full potential to it. I think western education is successful, mainly because of this. Right? They pay more attention to their interests and then dedicate their university career in studying this interest as they go on to get graduate and doctorate degrees.

2

Q: What does translation mean to your life? A: Well, when I was doing my M.A.degree (actually at that time,

my major was Linguistics) I was still very interested in translation. Later on, I found that if you want to learn English well, you must learn to compare the Chinese version with the English version. If you want to express yourself well, you must compare English and Chinese, at first, of course, maybe, the most important thing is that we should learn to speak and express ourselves well in a unique way.

3

Q:Many students would like to take p a r t i n t h e p o s t g r a d u a t e school entrance exams, what do you want to say to those students? A: So I think colleges give us another chance to make a choice, of course, if you are interested in the major you are learning ,you are fortunate .You can further it ,make yourself more competent in that area. Make sure you do research into the university you want to attend, so you know how well your degree program is at that particular school. You don't want to waste your time and money attending a school that is not good for what you want to do. If you are not lucky enough and you don't study what you are interested in, then you should try to change your major and go to another college to specialize at that major.

Q: Do you have some suggestions about how we can l e a r n t o d o translation well? A: It is hard to say, different people have different ways to learn foreign languages. But my suggestion is that, first of all, you should develop your interests, find your interest, and then devote all your time to that, One you find your interest begin searching for material that you would want to t rans la te , then spend a l l day translating those materials.

The Way

to ral English

EDITOR | MIUCAWRITER | JEANNE YU

When we begin t a l k i n g a b o u t

learning English, a lot of people only think

about the writing aspect. The label of "dumb English"

has been posted by Chinese students for a long time, don't

you find it funny that we hear the sentence "my English is poor" so frequently. While on the other h a n d , w h e n foreigners try to speak Chinese, they always say, "even though I’m not good at Chinese, I still practice and try to improve i t every day". How can we polish up our skills like them, how can we find motivation to study hard,

when there is so much going on around us? We need to take

the initiative and go in head first rather than blushing

and shyly excusing ourselves when we

communicate with foreigners?

For the sake o f “ B u r n i n g C l u b ” , I a m fortunate to meet many freshmen who are eager to learn. So I take this opportunity to ask them some questions about the problems that

they encounter when t r y i n g t o s p e a k

English. The most c o m m o n s

answers were: shyness, poor v o c a b u l a r y, fear of having a w e i r d accent, and a l a c k o f a comfortable l a n g u a g e

environment; s o m e e v e n

think that if a col lege student

here in China tries to speak English they are

trying to showing off . I find that most of these answers can be easily solved while the belief it is trying to show off, just reconf i rms your desire to be lazy and not work hard for your future.

Page 29: Autumn Edition (2014)

Firstly, in terms of shyness , oh come on, really? You

are in your 20's, it's time to accept childhood is over and time to be mature, ok?

No matter how your character is, "shyness" to prevaricate that your own spoken language is poor, is really

unacceptable. It is necessary to be confident in everything you do.

Finally, I heard someone said "Chinese people should only speak Chinese" if you believe this, then you're out! We live in a

globally connected world. By only speaking one language you lower your future life opportunities. When

learning a foreign language, you get more than just a communication tool, you also learn

about its culture and the mysteries that are associated with it.

Secondly, when it comes to poor vocabulary , there is only one person to blame? There is still a long time until the CET4 examination, while others are preparing their vocabulary, working hard for good grades, what are you doing? Others find online video tutorials to practice their pronunciation, what are you doing? We find excuses and take the lazy approach.

Furthermore, when we talk about the problems with our accent and lack of a comfortable language environment, these too can also easily be solved. Want a good accent? Listen to some audio tapes and repeat what they in the same exact way that they say it. You may laugh now at these people who do

this, but when they have a chance to work for an international company, they will be the ones laughing. So please trust yourself, find a study partner and knock out this language together. Everything is hard at first.

What about the environment? Create it! It is the same as if you are trying to change your mood because the weather is bad. However, remember when talking to foreigners do not be afraid of them, if you see someone confused or lost, try to help them by asking them if they need any. Just be pol i te and non- intrus ive, most foreigners who are enjoying a coffee at Starbucks would but more than happy to chat for a little bit with you.

l e a r n i n g t o o l s , social networking is

actually regarded as one o f the best p la t fo rms

because it is filled with plenty of relevant English articles. You can polish up your Engl ish v ia m i c r o -b l o g g i n g b e c a u s e y o u interesting p e o p l e w h o u s e English to communicate t h e i r v i e w s . More importantly,

you know what you like whether you like music,

movies , l i terature, poetry, or social

media, find what you love and

Please remember, practice makes perfect.

Remember back to when you were

Now it is time to do

Special Words

First of all, I am very glad to see all of the readers back again. This edition celebrates MM’s one year anniversary. As I look back on the past year, I watched as each edition progressed in publishing and distribution. Combine this progress with the overwhelming support of our enthusiastic fan-base and I am very excited to see what MM will bring to the table this year. In addition, I am impressed by so many new members joining the press team. I admire their devotion to reporting what is going on around campus and Suzhou.

It is my pleasure to see the International Education School playing a key role in the growth of MM. With a plethora of students from this school on the team, it gives our students more opportunities to achieve their dreams while working on fulfilling their potential. It is wonderful watching MM contributing to the growth of English learning and giving students a fun way to communicate in a foreign language.

I hope MM provides students great opportunities to expand and deliver their international vision. At the International Education School we put on a diverse range of activities encouraging our students to practice English so they can achieve their international dreams. At present, MM is the best choice for our students to gain valuable working experience considering they have set up and produced a large resource base, and more importantly they have experienced staff displaying their unique influence on our campus.

With a new year comes new features. MM will be looking around Suzhou and Shanghai to bring our students with up-to-date events home and abroad in English. Many people believe English is not that important to learn, but MM is designed to make English close to everyone. A famous British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said "The limits of my language means the limits of my world”.

As the dean of the International Education School, I promise I will spare no efforts to help the press and all their supporters. I have trust in your devotion and firm belief. We will continue to progress with MM. Let us strive together for our dream!
