n the 8 May 2014, Bridget Edminson, Deputy Director, Head of General Law Division, Central Legal Services, Ministry

of Defence confirmed in a letter to RIFT, the UK’s leading tax refund experts, that service personnel can claim tax refunds.

This categorically clears up any confusion which our MOD clients may have had about whether they could claim a tax refund. RIFT has spent a lot of time and money fighting for the rights of service personnel and leavers to be able to claim tax refunds and also to make sure that the MOD officially confirmed what we have always known to be the case - that MOD service personnel and leavers are eligible to claim tax refunds when they are using or have used their own vehicle to travel to temporary workplaces.

Extracts of the official statement from the MOD are below:

“A tax refund may be claimed for the difference between the HMRC allowed rate of £0.45 per mile and the MOD £0.21 per mile tax exempt allowance (i.e. on £0.24 per mile), provided the individual is on temporary duty, as defined by the relevant HMRC legislation, not by MOD policy. Please

accept my reassurances that all of the relevant policy directorates are now aware of this basis for a valid claim for a tax rebate on home to duty mileage, as agreed with HMRC.

I hope that the above addresses your concerns and assures you that MOD is not preventing service personnel from submitting claims for tax rebates to HMRC.”

Managing Director, Jan Post, established RIFT in 1999 with a view to helping workers get their entitled tax refunds back and is particularly proud to be doing just that on behalf of our Armed Forces. “We have reclaimed over £8 million for service personnel and we don’t want any more personnel missing out on money that’s rightfully theirs.”

RIFT can claim back for the last 4 years, which means a first tax refund of typically £2,500 and all refunds are protected by the RIFT Guarantee. With no upfront fees, it’s free to find out if you are due a refund – and there’s no risk. No refund means no charge.

To find out if you are due a tax refund, call today on 01233 628648, text RIFT to 80010 or log on to riftrefunds.co.uk/MOD

[ NEWS: WALKING WITH THE WOUNDED ]

n a “first of its kind” partnership, Walking with the Wounded, RFEA The Forces Employment Charity, Norfolk and Suffolk Police Force,

Anglia Ruskin University and Forces in Mind Trust are working together to support Veterans who have been released from Police Custody.

The initiative, launched in early July this year, known as Project Nova, is an 18-month trial directly led by Walking With the Wounded and RFEA. The trial will provide advice, guidance and support to Veterans using a “Nova Network” of military charities and organisations in Norfolk and Suffolk that can assist Veterans depending on their individual needs. The trial will also be underpinned by an academic evaluation to measure effectiveness and successful outcomes, which will be carried out by Anglia Ruskin University and funded by Forces in Mind Trust.

Coordinated by Colin Back, Project Nova will be working very closely with the Norfolk and Suffolk Police Custody Suites to support

and engage with Veterans identified. Colin served in the Army for six years, leaving in 1983; he then went on to serve with Norfolk and Kent Police. In 2011 Colin joined the RFEA charity as a specialist employment consultant, working with Veterans in Prison. Colin has strong links across both counties and actively supports Veterans in the Criminal Justice System, linking them into the military charity network available to them.

Colin commented: “The rehabilitation process back into the community is sometimes not an easy one, Veterans deserve all the support they can get – Project Nova will provide assistance, advice and continued support after release from police custody, to both the Veteran and their family, and it is fantastic how supportive Norfolk and Suffolk Police Force have been regarding the project. What makes my job so worthwhile are the emails and cards I get from time-to-time, telling us how much we helped and saying thank you. The word Nova means “new beginnings”, and that’s exactly what we want to help these Veterans achieve”.

PROJECT NOVA: A new hope for Veterans in Norfolk and Suffolk

WWTW is a UK based charity which funds both the re-training and re-education of wounded servicemen and women, with the aim of helping them find long term employment after they have left the Armed Forces. WWTW are looking at how they can best support the most disadvantaged cohort that are least likely to access support from main stream charities as part of their charitable objective, RFEA also provides support to Veterans across the Criminal Justice System and helps to source sustainable employment opportunities to help Veterans rehabilitate back into the community. The RFEA’s expertise lies in understanding the Veteran and the impact and unique nature of military service. Their position within the military charity community also enables them to be a powerful broker and linker to other charities that may be more appropriate for a client’s need – e.g. housing, life skills, mental health and funded training.

ounded in 1604, Blundell’s School in Devon is an enduring and vital community with a rich history and great appreciation of the need to be

modern and move with the times. Due to popular demand, particularly from forces families, this independent co-educational school is extending boarding provision to Years 5 and 6 in the Preparatory School. This exciting development will enable exclusive boarding for younger children in a safe,

friendly environment and means that full and weekly boarding is now available for pupils aged nine to 18 at Blundell’s.

Blundell’s is academically strong and the school encourages a genuine love of study and scholarship, perseverance and intellectual inquisitiveness. An average of four pupils a year gain places to Oxbridge and pupils successfully progress to a wide range of courses at the strongest universities.

Sport is integral to everyone’s life at Blundell’s. Sporting facilities are excellent with some first class coaches, several of whom have played at the very top of their chosen sport. Many Blundellians represent their county, with a good number also achieving national honours in disciplines as diverse as rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics, fives, biathlon and eventing. The creative arts are particularly well catered for at the school: a purpose-built theatre and Music School provide a focus for cultural activities and well-resourced facilities enable pupils to develop their skills in art, design and technology and photography. There is a wealth of clubs and societies allowing pupils to develop interests outside the classroom, ranging from astronomy to fencing, sub

[ REWARDS FOR FORCES ]

eter Raith launched Rewards for Forces in 2011 after hearing the following story: “I spoke with a Veteran that told me of a time when

he was queuing in a shop and he witnessed a student getting discount on their purchases. When it was his turn, the Veteran approached the counter and asked if he would be honoured the same discount as the Student, as he had served in the Forces. He was told no. it was then I knew something had to be done”.

Rewards for Forces is a national discount scheme, offering members of the Forces and their Partners premium discounts and benefits. Rewarding those who have served our country.

The UK’s largest discount and benefits website offers fantastic deals, offering money off 1000’s of local and national retailers up and down the country. Perfect for days out, holidays and dining out, this website has an extensive range of savings on their website www.rewardsforforces.co.uk.

to the Armed Forces Community is what drives them. Every day, they work relentlessly, contacting companies throughout the UK to encourage them to give something back.

Managing Director Peter Raith explains: “We at Rewards for Forces understand that when one person serves, the whole family serves. Through offering membership to Partners of those serving we believe that they can still benefit and enjoy some savings when times can be tough. With one parent away from home it is important to keep spirits high and we hope that our family oriented deals can be enjoyed in the knowledge that these companies are offering savings as a thanks for all the Forces do”.

f you are considering a UK Boarding School for your child

contact the experts, Sue Anderson and her team are the education specialists when it comes to UK Boarding Schools.

Preparation and planning is key to ensuring a successful boarding school placement. We all have access to the internet, research can of course be confusing, there is a lot of choice, they all look wonderful and families often do not know where to start.

The UK boarding school specialists have visited over 350 UK boarding schools and offer free help and advice

To Board or not to Board? This is a difficult decision for most parents, Harry Potter inspired children and after reading the books many are excited and keen to experience the fun and excitement of boarding school.

[ BOARDING SCHOOLS ]

to families, “this first hand knowledge enables us to identify what is special and unique about each school and match this with the needs of each child. The ease and convenience of our special educational service aims to make the search for the best school a stress free experience”.

Short listing and visiting three or four schools, is a very important part of the process and a deciding factor in selecting the right school for your child. It is about the people that we meet, these people are going to be a part of your child’s life, this is as important as the beautiful buildings and excellent facilities that these schools offer.

“We took the kids off school for a week and flew back to the UK to visit schools. This was a fascinating experience. Never had I seen schools so welcoming and interested in us. We came out of the first school and sat in the car, took a deep breath and went “Wow!” The decision was made there and then, that we would be happy to go to boarding school”. Ian, father of two new boarders.

The boarding house parents have a wealth of experience in settling new boarders into their care. Schools are happy to arrange taster days or sleepovers before the new boarder starts and arrange buddies and mentors with current pupils to help them settle quickly. Open lines of communication are encouraged between children and parents; the first point of contact will

often be the house parents who look after the children in the boarding house.

“It’s harder on the parents! Boarding life is structured; the children are kept very busy from the time they are woken until they go to bed. After the school day has finished there are activities, sports training, music lesson, drama rehearsals, prep (homework) and supper, and lots of fun and laughter”. Jane, a Housemistress.

Parents of new boarders will often comment on how independent their children have become, they are encouraged to think for themselves and take responsibility - good life skills in preparing for the next step, university and beyond.

“Deborah recently came home for half-term; we could not believe how much she had changed in just six short weeks. There was an air of confidence that had been missing before, a real sense of self worth. No more slouched shoulders and lack of eye contact whilst mumbling monosyllabic answers to the simplest questions. She had negotiated the airport successfully and even remembered to pack the correct books to do her holiday homework. I am so pleased we took the plunge and let her do this”. Sharon a Forces Mum.

Co-ed day and boarding school for 11-18 year olds

[ KING EDWARD’S WITLEY ]

King Edward’s Witley is an independent boarding and day school for girls and boys aged 11-18. The School has proven experience of catering for the specific needs of military children and boasts an excellent academic track record combined with compassionate pastoral care that ensures the security and physical / emotional well being of all pupils.

An early adopter of the prestigious IB, the School acknowledges the need for alternative routes to university and from 2015, will also offer the new A-level course.

The focus on academic achievement is never over-shadowed by a commitment to providing pupils with a rounded education that includes access to a wide choice of sports / creative activities, as well as instilling a positive value system. The pupil population represents a diverse range of academic / cultural backgrounds encouraging an authentic and supportive community consistent with real life.

Case study: Caroline Fox

“We agreed a boarding school education was the best option for our two children due to the moving around customary with a career in the military. Our priorities included identifying a school close to my parents so that if an overseas posting arose, the children could easily visit their grandparents (the school is within walking distance of Witley station, 50 minutes from London), who could also be called upon in the event of any emergency. We also wanted a school which offered an education until the age of 18, which taught boys and girls together. Allowing the two sexes to mix encourages a more natural and happier living environment and in the absence of their parents being directly on hand, I wanted the children to be able to lean on each other for support. We

Identifying the right boarding school for your child represents a difficult decision but making the right choice is critical where military children are concerned.

needed reassurance that the school would offer a broad range of options so that if a child is not academically gifted, they can still do their best at everything without feeling undue pressure. An established boarding school where our children could enjoy participating in weekend activities with their friends, just as they would if they were living at home, was also essential. Excellent pastoral care was imperative and finally school fees had to be taken into consideration. We found King Edward’s to be really reasonable, plus we were impressed to find that there are no hidden extras and uniform costs are included in the fees.”

ne of the issues which concerns Services parents most is what happens to the education of their children if the military

“breadwinner” dies, has to be medically discharged, or otherwise gets into difficulties while serving or even after retirement. Not only will there be a probable need to move house, but finances will be stretched, not to mention the suffering involved. All parents want to do the best for their children, but well laid plans can all too often be adversely affected as years pass when the personal circumstances of Mum and Dad, or children, change, sometimes by personal choice, but all too often as a result of accident or misfortune.

Prince Albert recognized much of this around the time of the Crimea, and persuaded some officers to find a way to provide education for girls orphaned or with a father no longer able to support a house and home. The Trust which was set up for the prurpose purchased land and property in Hampstead, London and set up a boarding home to achieve this. The school on Rosslyn Hill received Royal Approval in 1856 when Queen Victoria became the Patron, and it became the Royal Soldiers’ Daughters Home. From this point on it existed to ‘nurse, board, clothe and educate the female children (orphans or not) of soldiers’. Between 1855 and 1900 over 1300 girls spent their lives at the home.

The Home continued to provide much needed assistance in the 20th century, with continuing support from the Army and the royal patrons. In 1946 the name was changed to the Royal Soldiers’ Daughters School. The old buildings were demolished in the 1960s to make way for what was at the time a modern 5 storey building with state of the art accommodation. In 1987 the school was renamed the Royal School Hampstead, and the charter was changed to admit daughters from all 3 Armed Services, and local civilian pupils.

Over recent years the pattern of service life has meant that fewer and fewer girls from service families attended the school and, in a change of strategy during 2011, the Trustees received permission from the Charity Commissioners to alter the way they would meet their objectives. They achieved this by ceasing to run a school, but leasing the buildings and site to an educational provider, Cognita, in order to use the rent received from this to make grants.

Thus there is now the Royal School Hampstead Trust (RSHT), which exists to assist in funding the education of dependents

Do you need help with your child’s education costs?

Oof servicemen and women, both currently serving and retired. Grants are available to those up to the age of 25.

Any eligible serving or ex-Service parent can apply for help, either through allocation of a financial grant direct to a school, College or University, or provision of a discounted place, with some top up of funding from the Trust, at one of the 50 Cognita schools in England and Wales. Applications may be submitted at any time, though the Trustees are sensitive to the impact of the normal academic year timetable, and the lead time for school and university admissions.

In its first two years of operating in this new form grants have been given to dependents of parents from the RN, RM and Army, of ranks from AB/LCpl to LtCdr/Major, of ages from primary school through to final year university.

All details are contained on the Trust website www.rshtrust.com and here may be found the application form also.

uilding even further on the successes of recent years, 50% of all exams taken were

A* or A grades, significantly above the national average. Also, 91.3% of the students completing their GCSEs achieved 5 A* to C grades. Lucton’s Headmistress, Mrs Gill Thorne, is delighted by the results. “Being a mixed ability school, we are used to variable results, but any school would be proud of these

grades. I am particularly pleased with the consistency of our top grades and yet again, I am extremely proud of Lucton’s performance in the sciences. We have a 100% pass rate in the separate sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and 67% of these results were either A* or A grades. These are subjects that universities value particularly highly and the statistics are quite remarkable, also, for the second year running, Chemistry achieved 100% A* to B.”

Half A*-A Grades at Lucton School

Lucton School pupils have also achieved excellent value-added scores. The results of this cohort fully endorse Lucton’s ambition to enable every pupil to achieve their full potential. Lucton School is hosting an Open Evening on Thursday 2nd October from 4.30pm.

CCF is an integral part of our Dukies’ educational experience

he Duke of York’s Royal Military School views the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) as an integral

part of its educational offer because of the incredible opportunities it provides.

The School’s CCF is staffed by personnel who have a range of military service (Regular, Reserve and Cadet Force) and the Officer Commanding, Regimental Sergeant Major and Training Major are members of the School’s Senior Leadership Team.

Students choose Army, Navy or Air Force

All students in Years 9 to 13 take part in CCF. They undergo a general introduction to the CCF and complete their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award in Year 9. In Year 10, they conduct training specific to the service arm of their choice (Army, Navy or Air Force). In Y11 they undergo a leadership cadre to prepare them for their Sixth form roles as non- commissioned officers (in ranks ranging from Lance Corporal through to Regimental Sergeant Major).

Training in the air, on land or at sea

As far as specific training is concerned, we follow the programmes laid down in the Cadet Forces syllabuses. Army training focuses on field craft and the skills required by an infantry soldier. Because of the size of our CCF, we are able to practice these skills at both section and platoon level. Royal Naval cadets have the opportunity to sail in our sailing boats in Dover Harbour. Expert tuition is provided. Royal Air Force cadets study the principal of flight and have the opportunity to fly at RAF Wyton’s Air Experience Flight.

The School is set in 150 acres of land which can be used by the CCF. This includes a 9 acre area which is used for field tactics. We are lucky to have an indoor shooting range, an outdoor shooting range and a climbing wall, all of which is integrated into our training.

Benefits of CCF

The benefits of being part of CCF for students include having membership of a nationally recognised youth leadership organisation. The award of ranks and the skills and qualifications gained are of huge individual benefit and are seen as a mark of merit by universities and employers. There is also the opportunity to access courses and activities within the Cadet organisation which are outside of the School.

Some of our former students have pursued careers within the armed forces and have found their time in the CCF invaluable. Similarly, those who do not choose a service career have found the leadership

opportunities and teamwork experiences of being in the CCF transferable to their own individual career pathways.

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme

All students at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School have access to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. All pupils in Year 9 take the Bronze Award and the Silver and Gold award programmes are open to students in Years 9 to 13. he Royal British Legion provides families of serving and ex-Service personnel the chance to take a week-long

break and get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.

We offer holidays between Easter and the school half-term each year, which usually run from Friday to Friday. Our Break Centres in Bridlington, Southport, Portrush and Weston-Super-Mare as well as some of the UK’s top holiday providers, aim to give families a week of fun, activities, exciting day-trips and memorable experiences, all in traditional British seaside resorts.

Unwind and take life as it comes, perhaps venture out and about to explore the many attractions of the local area or spend a lazy day at the beach - all our centres are located on the sea front close to town centres. Most importantly you will have time to be together.

Each Break Centre package includes six night’s full board accommodation, free

activities and entertainment, with travel to and from the centres also included. Breaks at Parkdean Holiday Parks and Haven Holiday Parks provide seven nights mobile home accommodation with a programme of daytime and evening entertainment and food vouchers to use in the onsite catering outlets.

Here we’ve answered some of your frequently asked questions:

Where can I go?

The Legion owns and operates four Break Centres (equivalent to high-standard, hotel-style accommodation) in England and Northern Ireland, and we also make use of Parkdean and Haven holiday parks around the UK, and they’re all near the coast.

What’s included/How much does it cost?

We aim to provide a free holiday that should only require a minimum amount of spending money. The Legion does assist, where possible, with the cost of food and transport.

Family holiday breaks

T Who can go?

The Legion can assist those who are Serving or who have Served in the UK Armed Forces, along with their dependents and carers. Some restrictions apply.

I’ve applied for a Legion Family Holiday - what happens next?

Once your application has been approved the Poppy Breaks Coordinator will contact you as soon as possible to assist in organising your holiday. Essentially, we’ll confirm what date you’d like to go away, which location and any specific requirements your family may have.

For further information on how to apply for a Family Holiday Break, call our helpline on 0808 802 8080 or visit www.britishlegion.org.uk

BOARDING AND DAY, BOYS AND GIRLS, AGED 3-18

Page 22: Education for the Military - Autumn Edition 2014

here is much to be said for placing a dyslexic child in a mainstream school if the school has an appropriate specialist dyslexic unit

to support their needs - an increasingly common provision at many independent schools.

One such school is Cobham Hall in Kent, a day and boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18.

“The real advantage of having high quality support in mainstream schools is that it gives the pupil access to the curriculum in its fullest sense,” says Mrs Diana Rabot, head of Cobham Hall’s Student Support Department which offers individually tailored learning programmes to girls to supplement and compliment their timetable of mainstream classes.

“But it’s not only about having access to the curriculum,” continues Mrs Rabot, herself a specialist dyslexic teacher. “It’s also about being included in all aspects of school life and being recognised as contributing to the whole school community. Often it is our dyslexic students who really shine in areas such as Music, Drama, Art or Photography.

“High quality support recognises their strengths, gives them alternative ways of showing their knowledge and empowers them to participate and be recognised for their strengths.”

The school’s recently graduated Guardian (Head Girl), Isla, is a case in point. She achieved an impressive International Baccalaureate Diploma score, including full marks in Photography, and led the school’s Student Leadership Team, all while receiving support for dyslexia. She commented that the school had helped her to see her dyslexia from a different perspective.

“The difference between when I started at Cobham Hall and now is huge,” she said.

“The biggest thing is confidence. When I came I had little self-confidence or self-belief. I studied lots of interesting subjects and began to enjoy school again. I found other ways to gain courage to try things.”

Mrs Rabot also makes an important point about how dyslexia support in a mainstream environment can have a positive impact on the perception of dyslexia in society as a whole.

“I think that high quality dyslexia support should express the view that dyslexia - or any other specific learning difficulty for that matter - is really a learning difference rather than a difficulty. One of the real privileges of teaching dyslexic learners is seeing a different brain at work!

Cobham Hall:Valuing experiential education and helping to nurture talent in every aspect of learning

T “Society has really moved on in the way that it views learning differences and we have a moral duty to ensure that all pupils are equally valued,” she says.

“Another advantage of having high quality dyslexia support in a mainstream setting,” adds Mrs Rabot, “is that subject teachers also feel supported in how they teach and support dyslexic learners - ideally the communication here between what goes on in the classroom and any specialist teaching needs to be seamless and pupils need the opportunity to practise strategies in the classroom that allow them to be independent.

“One of the things I really like to hear from my learners is: ‘Thanks but I can do this on my own now’!”

Quite apart from the obvious advantage of being able to keep dyslexic and non-dyslexic siblings together in the same school, schools like Cobham Hall offer a huge range of extra-curricular activities in which children with learning differences can shine, displaying their full range of abilities.

Cobham Hall has a particular advantage as a member of Round Square, with an ethos which values experiential education and helps to nurture talent in every aspect of learning.

“In essence, it is all about the pupil achieving their full potential and going on to do what they want to do, in an environment that allows them to shine - be that university, apprenticeship schemes or going directly into employment,” says Mrs Rabot.

n September this year, Wilsic Hall and Fullerton House Independent Specialist Colleges, of the Hesley Group, celebrate their first anniversary. Both

are based near Doncaster and together offer comprehensive care, support and enablement, delivered through a wide range of activities and opportunities, for young people, aged 19-25, with complex needs, generally in association with autism and a learning disability, with the aim of facilitating their sustainable progress through the challenging period of transition to adulthood.

Richard Webster, Head of Education at the colleges (or “college” as the overall provision is described), identifies the biggest success of the past year as the increased independence young people have gained over this time. Richard and Annamarie Sables, the Registered Care Manager for the college, note the importance of taking measured risks to

enable young people to achieve a “cautious reduction of dependence”. They agree it can be easier to be overprotective, than to encourage young people to learn through trying new activities and managing new situations for themselves. It is often tempting – but less helpful in the longer term - to “step in”, than to take a judicious “step back”, they say.

Staff enthusiasm, consistency, expertise and experience, have all been vital as has a small team approach, with care, education and clinical staff working together closely and cohesively. The flexibility of staffing has also been key, with provision designed around the needs of individual young people, with a strong emphasis on recognising the whole person, rather than focusing particularly on diagnostic “labels”. Shifts have been extended to 11pm, for example, to facilitate age-appropriate activity.

Some elements of college provision are very much based on established Hesley approaches. All new staff undergo the full Hesley three week induction, which includes initial training in the Hesley Enhancing Lives Programme (HELP), an ethical, enabling approach to care and support, based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis and of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), which originates from Cornell University in New York and is an internationally recognised approach to positive behaviour support. Ongoing training, including in HELP, has a strong focus in Hesley. Specific extra training is provided for college staff, geared to this service and those who use it, with bespoke social skills

and other task-orientated packages as part of this, aimed at supporting staff to enable young people in optimal ways.

In getting provision right for young people, Richard Webster sees education as “a tool for breaking fundamental life stuff down into small steps”. Skills training for life at home and outside; the development of “work pathways”, which help equip young people progressively for employment; and travel training - to facilitate safe travel which is as independent as possible - are all examples of this approach. Personal safety training is also an important foundation.

Some young people have already shown remarkable and sometimes unexpected progress. One has started to talk at the age of 20, in particular response it seems to immersion in a work environment, where others around him are talking and “bantering” all the time. Another has managed her anxiety much better than ever before, which has allowed her to enjoy and fully participate in a work experience, in a way that would have previously been considered too risky. Both Annamarie and Richard emphasise the importance of not making assumptions about what a person can and cannot achieve.

It seems clear, that aside from individual elements of provision, the college service has a very strong human foundation of experience and expertise – and also care, commitment, hard work, passion and intuition. A very strong basis, hopefully, for a long and positive future!

uring the six years that Pete served with the Royal Corps of Signals, his job ranged from providing satellite communications to outreach

detachments and supporting troops on the ground, to providing regional headquarters with all their communication needs. He decided to leave the army to pursue the goal of attaining a degree, a goal which the army was unable to support. He was selected to join the Oxford University Officer Training Corps which, Pete says, “enabled me to still do the bits of the army that I loved whilst being at university.”

Pete joined Brookes as a mature student to study for a degree in Computer Science and Network Computing, with a mixture of relevant experience and qualifications he had obtained whilst in trade training with

the army. Of his time at Brookes Pete says, “The discipline and motivation that had been etched into me whilst serving in the Royal Signals and overseas operations enabled me to balance my course work, lectures and a part time job in IT for a small consultancy firm, giving me the experience and edge over other candidates when looking for a full-time job”, and that the firm he worked for was “really understanding and flexible around my studies.”

Pete feels that the skills he has obtained at Brookes have prepared him for the commercial world of IT. The mix of practical and theory modules enabled him to gain a better understanding of how businesses work and how to implement IT projects. He is on course to graduate in the summer of 2015 and has recently secured a new job

He is on course to graduate in the summer of 2015 and has recently secured a new job

hy study Engineering?Engineering UK’s 2014 report tells us that engineering now accounts for 24.5% of

the turnover of all enterprises in the UK. The report also tells us that to reduce the current gap between the supply of engineering skills and the demands of industry & manufacturing the UK will need around 87,000 graduate level engineers per year over the next ten years. And if you need more convincing, there’s the Sunday Times report (May 2012) which ranks BU engineering graduates as the second highest earners in the UK six months after graduation, with an average salary of £38,095!

Why study with us?

Bournemouth University is based on the south coast and is recognised as one of the most innovative universities in the UK; bringing together professional practice and academic excellence.

To help meet the demand for skilled engineers, BU has developed a course leading to the award of Masters in Engineering in conjunction with the Engineering Council. This coveted MEng award also carries accreditation by the Engineering Council and the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), and fully meets the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

As you would expect from the university that has more students on a work placement than any other university in England, our full-time course has excellent industry links, and an optional one year placement. If you have already have studied to Foundation Degree level in an Engineering discipline and/or are working full time in an engineering job then you can complete your studies to either the BEng or MEng levels on an on-line distance learning basis.

any of you within the Armed Forces, it is fair to say, have received the highest quality training and education there

is and it is frustrating that so much of this is sadly not recognised the other side of the wire by civilian employers, although I am now led to believe that there are plans to address this to some extent.

When you leave the Armed Forces, it is vitally important that you demonstrate on your CV, a selection of transferable skills and vocational qualifications because employers very much expect applicants to ‘hit the ground running’ these days with the skills and qualifications needed to do the job.

I sadly meet so many people who leave it far too late before realising they need these skills and qualifications before leaving the Armed Forces and this often results in periods of unemployment during job searching, coupled with the demoralising experience of being cast aside at the application stage.

How many younger members of the Armed Forces leave school with virtually nothing in the way of qualifications and are now leaving after serving the minimum length of service, with little to show for their time? The likelihood is that they will struggle to gain employment, particularly as statistics recognise that just over a million young people between the ages of 16 to 24 are unemployed or not in education.

I work for TQ, a company who has been working closely with the Armed Forces for many years, providing high quality training and vocational qualifications. The vocational qualifications we offer the Armed Forces we do not offer to anyone else and as a result these courses are endorsed and very heavily discounted for Armed Forces personnel and their dependents. We are a passionate team of individuals who are fully aware of the challenges the civilian jobs market offers. Using this passion, drive and commitment, we want to help those personnel and their dependants succeed in achieving the vocational qualifications and workplace skills needed to succeed in securing employment on civvy street or for progressing through the ranks. We have helped large numbers of personnel in the past and continue to do so with great success and this is something we feel very strongly and passionately about.

Offering a wide range of vocational and knowledge based courses including NVQs, ITQ, ILM, Driver CPC, ITSSAR Counterbalance Forklift truck , we are certain there is a course which will appeal to you; we also routinely

Tips on how to gain civilian recognised vocational qualifications

M

introduce new courses based on the feedback we encourage.

All military personnel are encouraged to commit to professional and personal development and the Armed Forces incentivises this commitment by not only subsidising the course fees but also offering £175 of Standard Learning Credits annually, which can be used to reduce short term course fees by as much as 80%. The course fees are a fraction of the equivalent civilian course fees, offering exceptional value for money.

As an assessor and someone who strives to help those individuals who want to help themselves, I cannot stress the importance of ensuring you not only give yourself the best possible chance of succeeding in the civilian jobs market but to also ensure you are a viable and attractive resource to any potential employer.

So in summary, utilise your time in the Armed Forces to get as many civilian recognised qualifications on your CV that you can, especially as they are so attractively priced. You may still have a number of years to serve but I say, “there is no time like the present”. Use your Standard Learning Credits to reduce the course fees for short term courses like NVQs, ECDL, ITQ and ILM and your Enhanced Learning Credits for more expensive, longer term courses. And above all, take the time and if necessary seek advice to ensure you have created the perfect CV which is going to impress and demonstrate that you are a potential asset that no employer can afford not to consider.

urrent trends show that a high proportion of service leavers end up on the Hostile Environment Close

Protection (HECP) ‘Circuit’, employed by any one of the many Private Security Companies (PSCs). That being the case, many of you may wonder what is the point of doing a Close Protection (CP) Course in the first place if service leavers can get a job on the HECP Circuit purely on the strength of their military experience?

Whilst the more reputable PSCs recognize the importance of using operators with an HECP specific qualification, there are still those who are quite happy just to get ‘boots on the ground’ to fulfill contractual obligations, regardless of quality. Of course, these PSCs will insist that their CPOs are more than capable of providing “adequate” protection to their clients. In my experience however, it is becoming more and more

apparent that few former soldiers, regardless of military experience, are able to “hit the ground running” as a HECPO.

There is much more to becoming a HECPO than simply being a combat experienced soldier, particularly given the increasingly complex environments in which they now find themselves operating and the presence of an International Code of Conduct for Private Security Service providers (ICOC PSSP). First of all you are a non-combatant and are there to provide security for your Principal in exactly the same way as on the Executive Protection Circuit in London, governed entirely by the local laws and regulations. That said, it is still the case that all of the basic or ‘soft’ skills taught on a Level 3 CP course do still apply in HECP as follows:

• Understanding the Roles and Responsibilities of a CPO.• How to assess threats and risk.• Surveillance skills (Counter & Anti).• Operational Planning skills.• Understanding law and legislation.

Advice for service leavers looking to enter the field of Close Protection

C

• Possessing the necessary interpersonal skills.• Teamwork.• Reconnaissance.• How to apply on-foot protection drills.• Route planning and selection.• How to drive tactically and defensively.• Search procedures.• How to deal with incidents and dilemmas.• How to apply venue, location and travel security.• Communication & Conflict Management. • Physical Intervention skills

As important as these skills are, they do not cover the basic skills and drills required to operate as a HECPO, which is why the Perseus Academy designed a customised “fit for purpose” course that prepares ex soldiers before deployment covering the following essential subjects:

• Introduction to working in a Hostile Environment as a HECPO • Pre-deployment requirements: admin, kit & equipment.• Cultural Awareness – absolutely vital in generating freedom of movement!• Actions On – vehicle and on-foot protective anti-ambush drills.• Reaction to trauma & medical crisis in a hostile environment including medevac, casevac and casualty extrication procedures.• Safe weapon handling skills.• Rules for the Use of Force and Graduated Response.

In the past, those hired on Government funded contracts were afforded what has now become the luxury of an induction course. Newly hired HECPOs would spend a week or more being taught the basic skills by a dedicated training team experienced in that particular field of operation. This is increasingly rare since the majority of contracts today are commercial contracts in the Oil & Gas industry.

Many will argue you receive ‘on-the-job’ training! This “training” however tends to be very limited, largely comprising of the new guy being put behind the wheel of a 4-ton, top-heavy B6 Level armoured car with an AK47 rifle that he has not had an opportunity to zero, test fire or clean, and then being asked to escort a highly-skilled and valuable oil field worker to his place of work. Not best practice!

Now that Western military operations in the Middle East have largely ceased and overall security and control of the country has been handed back entirely to the local security forces, Western PSCs no longer have the ability to call upon coalition forces to come to the rescue. A HECP team can find themselves very much alone when faced with an attack.

This is why it is vital to be properly trained prior to deployment. Furthermore, at Perseus we believe that each HECPO must have some understanding of planning and executing a security operation, and not just the Team Leader (TL). This ensures that every operator we train has the ability to ‘step up’ if so required and helps mitigate the risks posed by a determined attack or insurgency. A good quality HECP course will also offer the training necessary for those who will be or who wish to be TLs, giving them the enhanced skills required to liaise effectively with clients and maintain the capabilities and welfare of his or her team at all times. As explained earlier, training is now considered a luxury in the time and cash strapped world of commercial industry clients, so it is unlikey that operators will receive formal TL training once they enter the workplace.

Deploying CPOs in a complex hostile environment without formal and specific training is dangerous for Principals and HECPOs alike. With lives very much at risk, it is not an area in which to take short cuts. However, with the likelihood that time and resources are not being allocated to vital team training on commercial contracts, the onus is very much upon the prospective CPO to identify and attend a reputable “fit

In doing so they should ensure that it is delivered by experienced and current HECPO Instructors providing relevant field training of the sort that cannot be delivered by powerpoint. hether planning to separate at the end of your enlistment or approaching retirement after a long

military career, you may be considering working as a private contractor abroad for your next career move. Former service members are attractive candidates for many companies looking to recruit for overseas positions in security, communications, intelligence, engineering, construction, etc. As the founder of Atmospherics Unlimited, a security consulting and project facilitation firm that specializes in supporting clients in hostile areas, I have myself transitioned from military service to private contracting to running my own company. I can attest that working abroad as a contractor does have its challenges, but can be extremely rewarding if you follow my tips below:

1. Perform thorough due diligence on prospective companies

Last month, an ISO28007 accredited maritime security company went bankrupt and closed its doors virtually overnight, leaving hundreds of foreign contractors literally at sea. While I wouldn’t say these situations are common, they happen regularly enough that before you sign any contract, investigate:

• Status of the company’s financial health and if they are involved in any major litigation

• Who their partners and subsidiaries are

• How current and former employees rate the company (e.g. check Glassdoor.com; ask around)

2. Make sure you get all promised compensation/benefits

Read your contract carefully and make sure that all verbal agreements pertaining to remuneration, benefits, and reimbursables appear in writing. Having an employment attorney review the contract for potential red flags is also a good idea. Before you get on the plane request copies of all health and insurance plans (including MEDEVAC), especially if you will be working in a hostile area of operations.

3. Consider your work/life balance

I am extremely fortunate that my wife is also my business partner. We started Atmospherics Unlimited together in Kabul with a shared vision for where we wanted to take the company and a mutual understanding of the hardships that come from working abroad, often in hostile areas. Our situation is unusual though; most contractors spend long periods of time away from their loved ones and the stress of being

gone for extended periods can take its toll on families, especially if the job takes you to dangerous places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, etc.

4. Don’t stagnate professionally

You will gain a lot of experience as a contractor, but it is also easy to stagnate professionally once you get comfortable with a particular type of job. Do not neglect your professional development. It’s up to you to continue your education, learn new skills, gain additional accreditations, and/or routinely seek out new jobs outside your comfort zone.

5. Have long-term plans and goals

Professional development is vital because you WILL have a life after contracting. I have seen many older contractors left in the lurch because they eventually lost the mental or physical capacity to do their jobs effectively but had nothing else to go into. This particularly applies to anyone considering a job in armed security: you will need a long-term plan for progression into less physically-demanding security jobs and/or have an exit strategy that allows you to transition into another career field. This includes having your finances in order. The vast majority of contractors will eventually want to give up the contractor lifestyle and find a job or retire closer to home, so make sure that you save a significant amount of your earnings and remain tax compliant while abroad.

hether planning to separate at the end of your enlistment or approaching retirement after a long

military career, you may be considering working as a private contractor abroad for your next career move.

The vast majority of contractors will eventually want to give up the contractor lifestyle and find a job or retire closer to home, so make sure that you save a significant amount of your earnings and remain tax compliant while abroad.

f you are considering a career in the Security Industry, below is some information

that will hopefully keep you one step ahead of the taxman!

Your tax will be your OWN responsibility;when you start work in the Security Industry most companies state that you have to deal with your own tax responsibilities, this means that you will have to submit a self-assessment tax return to HMRC every year before the deadline to avoid fines. If the outcome is that you owe any tax it will have to be paid to HMRC before the deadline to prevent interest & fines being added to your account.

There are only a small number of companies that will take you on a PAYE basis, i.e. pay your PAYE tax & NIC.

What if I don’t tell the taxman anything?? That isn’t a wise decision, HMRC have investigation teams & if you are found to have not declared your income then you can receive large fines & possibly face legal action.

Also if you have paid too much tax in the past you won’t get it back if you don’t do anything.

Never ignore correspondence from HMRC;

if you receive any letters or bills from HMRC & you are unsure why then either contact them direct & ask for advice, or if you have an accountant call them.

Common Mistakes made:

• Listening to know it all’s, unfortunately we all know someone who thinks they know everything about tax, how to deal with the taxman but unless they are a tax advisor or accountant then ignore them!

• NOT keeping receipts, travel documents & other important documentation.

• Setting up an overseas bank account to keep your money safe, HMRC now have the powers to investigate these accounts.

• Not saving money for a tax bill, you should always expect to have a tax bill. We generally advise that you put 20-30% of your income away to cover any potential tax bill.

Working abroad in the Security sector, you need to qualify to get the tax reliefs that are available which can then minimise your potential tax bills.

NON-RESIDENCY - Working on Land Abroad, You MUST adhere to the following:

• Be employed or carry on a trade/profession abroad

• Work at least 35 hours per week

• Have an employment contract for a minimum of 12 months

• Complete ONE full tax year, April to April

• Spend NO more than 90 days in the UK in a full tax year, April to April.

SEAFARERS EARNINGS DEDUCTIONS - Working at Sea, You MUST adhere to the following:

• Spend at least 183 days out of the UK over a 12 month period

• Be classed as employed

• Visit at least ONE foreign port every tax year, for every employer.

If you are NOT going to qualify for either Non residency or Seafarers Earnings Deductions (SED) tax reliefs or you are going to be working in the UK then you have the option of being a Sole-Trader or a Limited Company.

Self-Employment

• Being a sole trader involves personal financial risk & you must pay your debts if the business fails.

• Setting up as a sole trader is quick, easy & involves no cost.

• You will be liable for tax, Class 2 & 4 NIC

Limited Company

• Having a Limited Company means you will have to adhere to strict Company law legislation.

• The accounts must be prepared under the Companies Act with financial statements & reports; this does make the accounting fees higher.

• You will be liable for Corporation Tax on the net profit of the Company at the end of financial year

our probably spending a fair amount of time gathering the skills and knowledge

available to ensure you are in the best position to move into Civilian life.

So lets go down the check list:

• Learning how to put together a professional CV, check. • Looking at the current job market & at the new skill sets required to gain employment, check.• Gathering information on courses, check.

Excellent, BUT how much time have you spent looking into one of the most important issues there is before stepping into civi street, having a financial plan.

Now if your thinking, here we go how much is one of these going to cost me? The good news is absolutely nothing yes it’s free, as you design and build the financial plan yourself. However how effective it will be, is totally up to you.

Building a financial plan?

A key element to a successful plan is obtaining accurate, clear, up to date information, which you understand, from fully qualified and experienced people with knowledge of your situation. Any wrong decisions you make now could result in poor choices and decisions to important financial planning, Tax knowledge, insurance, mortgages and legal matters which could have major implications later on in life.

Receiving the correct advice and information is going to help you build a robust financial plan that will not only enable you to achieve your goals but give you a great lifestyle up to and beyond your retirement.

Doing nothing

Through no fault of their own people, when they hear the words ‘financial planning’ stick their heads in the sand and ignore everything around them. This could be caused by rumours, hearsay or simply not receiving the proper information.

Remember the saying ‘doing something is better than doing nothing’ building a financial plan is free; gathering advice and information is free. So when making your financial plan you are also gaining knowledge and confidence which in turn will put you in a commanding position if and when you decide to introduce products to help achieve your goals.

Where can you get help?

The ICS Group was founded in 2011 to provide free financial awareness seminars to military personnel still serving or going through resettlement and people working within the security industry. Delivering key information in relation to financial planning, tax issues, Health/life/Critical illness cover, legal matters, mortgages and general financial awareness.

Working with companies that are specialist within their respective fields and have experience dealing with military personnel and their families, we ensure that the information you receive is up to date, correct and most important of all given by people who are fully qualified, UK regulated and registered.

We personally pride ourselves on making our financial awareness seminars unique, captivating and easy to understand. If you can’t reach a seminar we provide an online advice form so you can still receive information from professional companies in the financial, insurance, legal, healthcare and property sectors.

With more than twenty years of problem solving in a wide range of diverse environments, time served in the British Armed forces, the security Industry and training within the financial services, members of The ICS Group are in a prime position to make people aware of the financial issues that are unique to serving or ex-military personnel.

[ RECRUITMENT ]

here have been many articles in the press and online media about the current state of technical recruitment, and issues this may

cause industry if not addressed, but we are finding time and time again that the actual recruiting bodies are still retaining their old processes which has contributed to the issues faced today. Being an advocate of forces recruitment for many years I am constantly frustrated by the lack of understanding of the skills available from the armed forces. The British Armed Forces have been trained to an extremely high level with skills which are transferable to many industries.

To take advantage of this companies are going to have to find more and more inventive ways to resolve the problem before the issue starts to have a real commercial impact on business and the UK in general.

I am so passionate about this subject that I have joined ANAtech Resource to help raise the profile of the issues faced by ex-Forces after they leave their military careers in finding gainful and challenging employment. I have seen over many years, individuals with not only exemplary military careers but also exemplary technical careers simply passed over for menial jobs in the civilian workforce. For me this is extremely frustrating knowing what companies could gain from these highly motivated individuals.

I joined ANAtech Resource because they have a great balance of real industry experience and recruitment know-how and as they are ex-forces themselves they speak the languages of both sides. This is an extremely important aspect due to the sometimes unrealistic expectations of our ex-forces colleagues and limited knowledge of the available skills from our clients.

This ‘translation’ service is an extremely important aspect of getting the right people for the right job. The worst thing our guys can do is send in a CV to someone who has little to no understanding of the Armed Forces. Their terminology and language is very different to what is usually expected resulting generally be CV being discarded. Our aim is to help those clients in desperate need of technical resource overcome this initial step.

Want a solution to your current recruitment crisis?

Make no mistake, these guys and girls are highly trained, highly motivated and extremely keen. They have had to carry out their jobs in conditions and locations most will never see in a lifetime. These guys really are the best in the world therefore should be a real target for a skill strapped industry.

Some areas of industry already understand the benefits and where they have gone into highly technical roles they have been a credit to the armed forces and the companies they represent and as a result promotion often follows much quicker than their civilian counterparts.

The areas of industry which could really benefit from these groups is O&G, Nuclear, Automotive and Utilities. I have joined ANAtech Resource to help promote these world class Engineers and Technicians to industries that are already experiencing a skills shortage and until the STEM generation catch up the ex-Forces are a great stop gap.

There has been some hesitation to use ex-forces in certain areas of industry and that maybe due to the fact that some groups simply don’t know ‘how to recruit’ ex-forces. Often the mistakes made are to simply use civilian methods (open job posts for ex-forces) and then the expectations are as they would expect with civilians, due to the difference in terminology this will only provide limited success. If there is one area where a consultancy is required to get the best results then this is it.

or couples serving in the military there are often extra hurdles to overcome.

Regular house moves and misconceptions about the military lifestyle mean that prospective parents can be overlooked by local authorities. Forces charity SSAFA established its own adoption agency in 2000 and since then more than 200 children have found a ‘forever family’ in the Service community.

SSAFA Adoption service manager Corienne Strange said: “As a charity, we really understand the unique challenges of military life and the way this can impact on the adoption assessment process. Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to help ensure that serving personnel have

the same opportunity to be assessed as adoptive parents as anyone else. Our workers stay with applicants throughout the entire process to ensure they have the support that they need.”

WO2 Sharon Turner and her husband Richard adopted two children through SSAFA in April 2011, a brother and sister now aged eight and seven.

Sharon, a Combat Medical Technician, said: “We chose to adopt through SSAFA because we were both serving at the time and we did not want to have to restart the process if we were posted. We also knew SSAFA would offer us lifelong support and we would always just be able to pick up the phone and get help if we needed it.

“The adoption process was actually relatively quick for us. Our social worker saw us initially to do the interviews and arranged for us to do a four-day preparation course. The course is intense but it gives you a great grounding. I cannot speak highly enough of our social worker.

ADOPTING a child can be a difficult and lengthy process at the best of times...

F

She really got to know us and understand us. She suggested we could cope with adopting siblings at the same time and we knew we wanted to have more than one child so it made sense.”

Meeting the children for the first time was a nerve-racking and emotional occasion but in the event it was a perfect match.

“It was like going for the best job interview in the world,” Sharon said. “I remember being so nervous. What if they don’t like us? But from the moment we went to meet them, that was it. We are just like any normal family now. You don’t have to give birth to someone to have a family. You just need to be able to give them the love and attention that they need.”

Sharon and Richard’s daughter has learning difficulties so the couple have had to adapt their parenting to meet her needs and teach her how to express herself.

Sharon said: “Taking on a child with learning difficulties is a challenge. It’s time-consuming but it’s so rewarding. People said that you don’t get any ‘firsts’ if you’re not adopting a baby but the first time my daughter said, ‘I love you mummy’ I was in floods of tears.”

SSAFA works with serving families in the UK, Northern Ireland and British Forces Germany (BFG). There is no typical adoptive parent. The SSAFA Adoption Service welcomes applications from anyone irrespective of age, race, ethnicity, marital status, sexual orientation or gender. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone considering adopting sibling groups of two or three and older children aged four and over.

For a discussion on whether adoption may be right for you, please contact the SSAFA Adoption Service on 020 7463 9326 or email [email protected]

f you don’t think you can afford to buy a home, then shared ownership could be

the answer.

Shared ownership has helped thousands of people realise their dreams of owning their own home - and it could help you too.

What is shared ownership?

Shared ownership – or part-buy and part-rent – offers an easy, affordable and safe way to get onto the property ladder. You start by buying the share of your home that you can afford, based on its market value. This is usually between 25-75%. You only need a mortgage or savings for the share you buy. The costs of buying are also kept low as your deposit and legal fees are based on the price of your share, not on the home’s full value.

The remaining share of your home is owned by a housing association to which you pay rent. Your rent is usually subsidised, so generally the total amount will you pay in rent and mortgage payments is less than if you were to purchase a similar home outright or rent it privately.

Mark, who purchased one of our new homes in Cannock, said: “I earn good money but found it difficult to raise a large deposit in a short space of time. Buying a shared ownership property allowed me to move from a two-bed rented property to a brand new three-bed property with a garden, and my monthly outgoings actually reduced.”

If you want, and if you can afford it, you can usually buy further shares in your home – or ‘staircase’ – at a later date. So over time, you could own your home outright. And if you want to move on, you are free to sell your home at any time.

Who can buy through shared ownership?

Shared ownership is designed for people with a household income under £60,000 a year. Most first time buyers who can’t quite afford to buy a home outright can apply for shared ownership and you may also be eligible if you need to work in an area outside your price range.

It is one of four government-funded affordable home ownership schemes, but for many people it is the only affordable option.

For example, under shared ownership, you could buy a 25% share of a £150,000 property with just a £1,875 deposit and a mortgage of £32,625, compared to a £7,500 deposit and £112,500 mortgage under a Help to Buy equity loan. (You can find out more at www.gov.uk/affordable-home-ownership-schemes.)

Whether you are approved for a scheme will depend on your other financial commitments and what you want to buy. Housing associations and mortgage providers will want to be sure that you can afford to pay your mortgage and rent without being overstretched.

What can you buy through shared ownership?

Over the last 10 years, more than 80,000 new homes have been sold through shared ownership, and a strong market has developed for resales of shared ownership homes.

There are many housing associations offering shared ownership all over the country, for all types of properties from flats and small starter houses to spacious family homes, in rural villages or on urban residential developments. So there should be a shared ownership home that’s right for you.

ave you ever wondered what it’s like to do your DofE? Education for the Military Family hears from youth charity The Duke of Edinburgh’s

Award about what it means for a young person to do their DofE, how it equips them for the future and just what skills they learn.

The DofE is the world’s leading achievement award for young people of all backgrounds aged 14-25. Set up by the Charity’s Patron, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1956, the DofE is a unique personal development programme that allows young people to try new things, develop their interests and skills set, while working towards an achievement award which is recognised by employers and educational establishments across the globe.

When it comes to looking for a job, college or University place, young people will be glad to have done their DofE, it looks great on a CV as it demonstrates commitment and dedication as well as a variety of key skills employers look for in young recruits- it’s also good fun!

What’s involved?

A DofE participant follows their own programme of personal development in order to achieve their Award. Participants choose their own activities for each of the sections, meaning they are measured on activities they have an interest in and enjoy for each of the sections, introducing a new meaning of success to young people’s lives, outside of the classroom.

At Bronze and Silver level, participants pick activities from each of these four sections:Volunteering: For example, helping out at an animal shelter, social media class or elderly people’s home

Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities – for example, this could be running, football or even Zumba!

Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests – film making, learning to drive, playing an instrument or learning to care for an animal all count!

Expedition: getting outdoors for an adventurous journey – planning, training for and completing a challenging journey in the UK or abroad is possibly the most exciting aspect of the DofE.

At Gold level, there’s an additional Residential section to complete which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity.

Making the DofE work…

In a recent survey of DofE participants aged 16-18, 80 per cent said they think that having their DofE will help them to secure a job, with the Volunteering voted as the section young people felt would be prepare them for the workplace.

But how does taking part in the DofE help young people to get a job? While it looks great to employers to have a highly sought after, nationally recognised achievement award on their CV, it’s important participants understand which skills they’ve developed as a result of taking part and how these will translate into working life.

The survey also revealed that the DofE equips young people for working life with half of respondents stating they could demonstrate all five of the skills and attributes the CBI suggests as illustrative of a young person being ‘employable’. Two thirds stated that, in an interview situation, they could confidently demonstrate communication skills through their DofE experience and 89 per cent said they could work as part of a team, two attributes which will prove invaluable in the workplace.

Taking part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

H What do employers think about

the DofE?

In a recent independent survey of UK employers by the United Learning Trust, the DofE was voted was the most valuable accolade a young person can have on their CV after academic qualifications. Entrepreneur and former Dragon Theo Paphitis says he actively looks for the DofE when he receives a CV. He says:

“I believe the DofE gives young people the character, attitude and key skills which will allow them to do wonderful things throughout their lives. When I get a CV through, to see the DofE is a big tick in the box because I know they chose to do something that’s really hard. That they took up the challenge and saw it through. Achieving your Gold DofE is a huge tick in the box and really does change lives for the better.”

How do young people feel that their DofE is equipping them for the future?

16 year old Helen White from Windsor is currently working towards her Silver DofE through her school. Helen says:

“I wanted to do my DofE because it sounded like really good fun, especially the expedition. I can expand on a lot of my interests through my DofE activities; for example, I teach windsurfing to 8-15 year olds for my Volunteering section which helps me to learn to lead people and work towards my goal of being an instructor.

The DofE allows me to try new things; I get bored staying in and not doing anything so it’s a fun way of getting outdoors and doing something worthwhile with my time.”

o you have a special event to mark?

Have you considered a commemorative cover?

The Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force have a great history and between them they produce many military events and anniversaries worth marking. A commemorative cover with a special handstamp makes a great souvenir of such occasions and a uniquely collectable item. Proceeds from cover sales help to fundraise for Service charities.

Covers are produced by the Forces Philatelic Bureau (operated by BFPS) for annual events such as Trooping The

Colour and anniversaries of battles such as Trafalgar, Waterloo and the Battle of Britain. Last year we issued a very popular and collectable set of covers to mark ‘Dambusters 70’. Unit formations, amalgamations and disband-ments are also popular themes for covers.

2014 sees the Centenary of the outbreak of The Great War and BFPS is involved with the Imperial War Museum’s WWI Centenary initiative. Two commemorative covers have been issued so far to mark the outbreak of war on 28th July and the declaration of war on 4th August. A first day cover was also produced to coincide with Royal Mail’s Great War special issue of six stamps on 28th July.

ip McGrath Education Centres have been helping children with Reading, Spelling, English and Maths for over 35 years. There are

now over 650 centres worldwide, with over 220 operating in the UK.

Our experienced, professional and fully qualified teachers provide support to children who are finding schoolwork difficult, wish to excel or those students who are preparing for examinations or entrance exams. We understand that more often than not, the most common reason children struggle with maths and English is simply because of a lack of understanding, and should not be put down to lack of intelligence. We’ve even witnessed gifted children feeling insufficiently stretched by work which is beneath their capabilities, and subsequently lose interest in learning and slip down below their potential.

At Kip McGrath, we firmly believe that any child can learn if they are taught properly and every child deserves the opportunity to access educational services to reach theirfull potential.

Confidence is a key element, and that’s one of our focus areas with our students. Our proven methods of tuition are designed to teach any missing concepts of maths and English, which in turn will boost a child’s confidence, and help them make up any lost time so that they may have the opportunity to catch up with their peers.

The programmes are designed to give students the motivation to succeed. Each child is an individual, and they all have different learning styles. We don’t label or categorise our students, and therefore create a completely individualised learning plan for that child, which is catered to meet their style of learning.

Using our new, ground breaking, multi-million pound software, we are able to determine through our FREE assessment, with precision accuracy, the levels your child is at in their education. Our software, in combination with our manual activities and qualified

teachers, who teach educational concepts, are able to ensure that students are not given work that is too easy, nor too hard. The Kip McGrath system of tutoring is able to monitor a student’s progress and abilities to give them exactly the correct level of educational challenge. There are no ‘standard’ timeframes and progression is at the students’ pace, so that they never feel overwhelmed and therefore any sense of failure that they may have previously experienced is removed!

Children try harder when they attend Kip McGrath Centre because they genuinely feel that they are progressing and improving. Our teachers only provide support where and when it’s needed. At Kip McGrath, we find that children are more productive and become more successful independent learners when taught on a one-to-one individualised learning programmes basis, but in a group environment.

Online tutoring opens up a whole new world of possibilities for teachers, parents and students. We found that many parents wanted to enrol their child with us, but simply didn’t have the time to commit to a lesson time or a centre nearby. However, with a computer and a steady internet connection, students can still receive all of the benefits provided by our unique, proven methods of tuition with a qualified teacher online. For more information and details of your nearest centre, please visit our website, www.kipmcgrath.co.uk/em or call 01452 382282.

You could say that Kip McGrath give all students a second chance to reach their full potential and gain skills for life!

Take the next step to unlock your child’s full potential. Ring Kip McGrath TODAY for a FREE assessment to see what your child can achieve!

here are many reasons why some parents turn away from mainstream schooling. Some families make the carefully

weighed decision to home educate before their child reaches 5, while others send their child to school but later realise that mainstream schooling does not work for their child or their lifestyle. School may not suit their child’s way of learning, and parents may feel their child’s individual needs can be better catered for with the one to one attention that can be provided at home.

The decision to home educate is never taken lightly, and parents can often feel that there

is no support for them. We would like to share our experience, to help you if you have already made or are thinking of making the decision to educate your children at home.

There is a wealth of information online about home education, from organisations such as the Home Education Advisory Service who provide advice and support to families educating their children at home, to fun and engaging resources provided by the BBC. On our website you’ll find a list of the links we’ve found helpful and which we hope will of use.

Distance learning lends itself extremely well to home education, it has the flexibility to be tailored to meet your child’s needs. Here at NEC we offer a wide range of courses and options to parents and guardians who have chosen to educate their children at home, and our tutors are familiar with the specific demands home education can place on both parents and children.

NEC can provide GCSE, IGCSE and A level subjects all fully supported by an expert personal tutor for each subject studied. We know that, particularly for younger learners, a little more structure can make a big difference in helping to achieve grades to the best of their abilities. With this in mind we launched the NEC Young Learner’s Service.

What help can you get if you choose to home educate your children?

T

Forming a relationship between student, parent and educational expert, all of our research and experience shows, is paramount to success. The Young Learner’s Service aims to engage both student and parent, providing a structured approach to the learning programme while keeping in touch with the parents at the same time.

One question we’re often asked by families is ‘Will the qualifications be the same as at school, will they help my child get into University?’ The answer is yes. The qualifications are exactly the same, it’s just the way of learning that’s different. Some Universities even value the additional skills that distance learning brings, the importance of independent study skills cannot be underestimated.

Only you can decide if home education is right for you and your family, but if you do decide that this is the way forward, get in touch with NEC to discuss how we can help your child gain the qualifications they will need to go on to further study.
