Welcome to the Autumn edition of the BUZZ newsletter.

You will see from the cover that we have launched a new VOLUNTEERING drop in service

every Wednesday.

Pease help us to promote this through your own networks and contacts, and get in touch if

you would like to know more or are interested in supporting this new initiative in some

way.

We have also been continuing discussions both with the District and through the Voluntary

Sector Forum on how to improve delivery of volunteering support to residents and

community groups across the District.

At the time of writing, we are still awaiting a decision on our Round 1 bid to the Reaching

Communities Programme, but will keep you posted as and when we hear more.

Sustaining an organisation like SSCVA is increasingly challenging, something recognised

by a recent independent report which recommended longer term core FUNDING and

made this comment:

“Small organisations and groups, often led and run entirely by volunteers, have a huge

impact in their local areas. The Commission found many rely on local infrastructure

organisations to help them stay up-to-date with changes in policy and legislation, work in

partnership with other groups, recruit and retain volunteers, manage crises and have the

foresight to grow and develop. They found that infrastructure doesn’t just fill a need, it

also creates success”.

This is particularly the case in South Staffordshire, where 85% of the groups we work with

are purely led and managed by volunteers. We also recognise that how we deliver our

services has to move with the times, and we have to work hard to demonstrate the impact

that we and our member organisations are making locally.

Department for Transport funding has been secured for South Staffordshire to work with

the County to look at improving integration and quality of TRANSPORT provision through

a new pilot. If you wish to make your views known, have a look on our website for more

information plus a link to the relevant survey.

Last time round we reported on County level consultation around DEVELOPMENT AND

VOLUNTEERING SUPPORT needs.

The County Council has announced that it has decided to recommission its current

contracts with VAST and SCVYS and intends to save £500,000 over the life of the next

contract. Tender documents are expected to be released in January 2016 with the new contract in

place from the 1st August 2016.

There will be 2 further consultation workshops this month - as soon as we know the dates

we will post them onto our website and through social media.

Staffordshire County Council has announced names of successful applicants to take over

management and delivery of its community LIBRARIES.

Eleven contracts have been offered and talks have started around a further phase of

applications later in the year. Twenty Libraries will be managed and staffed by the Library

Service, and 23 will be supported in the community.

Of the 11 decisions 1 relates to South Staffordshire - Brewood Library is to be managed by

South Staffordshire and Shropshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Finally, we are busy planning our forthcoming ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING to be held

on the 10th November at Bilbrook Village Hall, 6 to 8pm.

Celebration Event 2015

On Saturday 4th July SSCVA held its annual Celebration Event. This year it was held at Trinity Methodist Church, Codsall in partnership with Staffordshire Council for Voluntary Youth Services (SCVYS). The purpose of the event was to showcase and celebrate the variation and availability of voluntary activity within South Staffordshire District and particularly to reward volunteers for their dedication and the difference they make to communities across the District. The event consisted of a range of exhibitors from grassroots local groups to larger organisations. The Rt. Hon. Gavin Williamson attended and officially opened the Event. During the day a range of participatory activities were available including short mat bowling, table tennis and workshops delivered by the Fire Service, Age UK Cook And Eat and the Alzheimers Society, whilst outside the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service fire engine was available for inspection.

Gavin pictured here having his blood pressure taken by the Stroke Association, and was pleased to know it was normal.

Over 200 people attended the event.

This was a great opportunity for groups and organisations to network with others.

If you have not used it already Experience Exchange is the go to website for sharing feedback on health and social care services in your local area. Through their simple rating system you can be as detailed as you like, and all reviews can be made anonymous, if so desired. The Dove Service

The Dove Service are a counselling support charity offering free emotional/counselling support to people in employment who have a caring responsibility outside of the workplace. We also offer emotional/counselling support to people over the age of 55 caring specifically for someone with a learning disability. To both of these groups of people we offer training opportunities around self-care, coping with change, confidence building and many more. We have set up support groups inside some employers which run on a monthly basis for carers to get together and support each other. If we are unable to offer the type of support the client is looking for we do our best to research other more suitable organisations and sign post people. All of our services are funded across Staffordshire and we aim to be as flexible as possible to support our clients. Alongside the clients we also offer support to the employers we work alongside. We offer a bespoke tailor made training to suit the needs of the employer and their business. Predominantly we offer training on; hidden carers, mental health in the workplace and identifying behaviours, emotions and physiological systems of those who may have a caring responsibility or other home stresses. We also look at changing work culture to encourage all employees to be considerate towards each other’s thoughts and emotions, not leaving this as solely a manager’s responsibility. For more information on any of the above or to make a referral please contact me below. We also have information sessions throughout the year from the Department for Work and Pensions detailing the benefits carers may be able to access. You can contact Louise directly either at [email protected] or on 07519820616.

The Me and You Project is a Lottery funded project for young people aged 15-25 with special educational needs, learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The project has been designed to build the skills, confidence and self esteem of the young people by providing positive outdoor experiences in a ‘green-blue’ environment. There is a mix of outdoor activities based around horticulture, wildlife/conservation and angling alongside a range of personal development techniques to enable and empower all group members. The activity sessions will be run by skilled, qualified staff and are often supported by experienced volunteers. The emphasis of all the sessions is participation, learning, development and enjoyment. All the young people will have the opportunity to work as part of a team, take on leadership roles where suitable, share their skills, try new activities and hopefully make new friends. All of this is done in the welcoming, friendly and positive environment of The Moat and Garden site at Albrighton. The Stage 1 (taster sessions) are free of charge and consist of six weekly sessions.

Planned 2016 start dates:

Friends of Bilbrook and Waterside Care “Brook Project” Waterside Care is an organisation which offers advice, practical support and equipment to local community groups. One of their representatives, Lee Copplestone, has helped Friends of Bilbrook facilitate schoolchildren “learning outdoors” whilst having fun IN and around the Moat Brook. Since September 2014 children in Years 6 and 7 at Bilbrook Middle School have enjoyed projects during their “Activities Week” which enabled them to….. Make bird food balls from an online recipe Sell them at their Enterprise Day Make bird feeders and place them in the trees at the Brook Design and make their own pooh sticks for racing in the Brook, competing then

discussing the most successful design.

The children also tested the water quality; caught bullhead fish and freshwater shrimps; climbed, paddled, and one literally became “stuck in the mud”. Their Science teacher used the experiences to expand their learning in the classroom and the children were a credit to their school by their behaviour off site. Waterside Care have provided pond dipping and litter picking equipment plus encouragement towards our children experiencing how to care for the wildlife and environment close to their school. The Friends of Bilbrook carry out monthly testing of the water and submit their readings to Waterside Care. The group have built 2 Hibernaculas in Jubilee Wood to support our smaller animal friends to survive the winter. On 6

th June 15 the friends carried out a balsam bash in

an attempt to rid the brook of the problem of Himalayan Balsam. 6 people worked for 2 hours and removed approximately 1500 stems. This was a great effort but so much more could have been removed with extra volunteers. Please come and help to keep our brook and Jubilee Wood beautiful and a safe habitat for our wildlife. Even if you can only spare an hour a month it would really help us out. You can view friend’s events on the website www.friendsofbilbrook.org or email at [email protected] or if you wish to join the contact list to receive email updates.
