PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Lou Bono, SWS President

2

Lou Bono2019 - 2020 PresidentSouthwestern Watercolor Society

My photo this month is at Porto Venere, Italy, on the last day trip of my urban sketching and watercolor vacation in May. Porto Venere is on the coast of north-western Italy, just south of Cinque Terre. Six of us from SWS and Urban Sketchers, and ten others from the US, Australia and New Zealand had a fabulous experience.

Our hearts and prayers go out to any members who were affected by the October 20th tornados that swept through Dallas, Richardson, Garland and other north Texas communities. The board and I hope you soon recover to your normal routines. My family and home were spared, with the closest damage being two miles from us at the Home Depo store that collapsed at Forest and Central Expressway.

We are looking forward to November and Thanksgiving, with lots of special family time and great meals. SAVE THE DATE! OUR HOLIDAY PARTY WILL BE SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8, FROM 3-5 PM, AT BLUE HOUSE TOO GALLERY IN WATTERS CREEK, ALLEN, TX.

As we approach the end of 2019, it’s time to open nominations for SWS officers and committee chairs for the next 2020-2021 term. Our current 1st VP, Jeff Jenson, is preparing for the president role, and is chairing the nominating committee. The officer roles and duties are outlined in our bylaws, posted on our website, under the “About” tab.

SWS always needs dedicated leaders and volunteers who enjoy working together for the benefit of our members and legacy of Southwestern Watercolor Society. If you would like to be considered for a leadership role by the nominating committee, please contact Jeff at [email protected]. You may also nominate yourself or someone else at the November 12 member meeting by submitting your name and position in the nominations box that will be at the member table. We hope to complete nominations for officers and committee chairs by February, with membership vote by April for installation at our last meet-ing in May. The SWS year runs from June 1 through May 31.

We also want to get an early start on staffing the 2020 Exhibition committee. These are volunteer roles working with the 4th VP Exhibitions. This year’s exhibition organization was vastly improved because of a new, comprehensive playbook, (project plan) and a new organization structure. Some early planning occurs before May 2020, with most effort occurring over the summer which leads up to an August open-ing and September reception. To learn more, and to volunteer, please contact current 4th VP Exhibitions, Regina Carl at [email protected] .

In response to member feedback and unusually high last minute workshop cancellations, the Board has completed a comprehensive review of comparative watercolor societies, both locally and within Western Federation Watercolor Society. We believe the updated workshop policy offers the best balance for en-rolled members, waitlisted members, the artists and workshop co-chairs. Details follow later in the Scene, and will be presented at the November meeting. Sincerely,

‘A Wagon Started My Art Career

My interest In art and drawing started in 1949 in a small West Texas town. Mrs. Brooks, my First Grade teacher, read a story about a wagon and asked the class to draw and color the wagon. I pulled out my Big Chief tablet and crayons and drew a rectangle with circles at each cor-ner and a line for the handle. When Mrs. Brooks returned the graded paper, I was shocked to see she had given it a C+! I was conscientious and always made A’s, so I was absolutely devastated and cried all the way home. Between sobs, I showed the C+ paper to my dad and he gave

me my first art lesson. Looking at my Red Flyer from a three-quarters angle, he asked, “How many wheels do you see?” When I said that I saw four, to told me to look again. “How many wheels can you REALLY see?” Then I realized that I could only see three because the fourth was completely hidden. He then showed me how to draw a simple box.

I was fascinated! After that first lesson, I started drawing every chance I got and soon became known as the class artist. Even though he was not an artist, my dad’s simple lesson launched me into a lucrative career, as well as a fun and rewarding hobby.

After high school, I enrolled in Texas Tech and graduated with a degree in Advertising Art and Design. I went to Houston, lugged my portfolio to job interviews and was told they didn’t hire inexperienced artists, especially women. I finally got a job with meager wages at a small design studio. Soon I was working at large agencies in the cut-throat world of advertising. I was mainly an art director/graphic de-signer, but my heart was in illustration and I illustrated at every opportunity. As I was nearing retirement, I knew I wanted to continue doing art but just for the pure enjoyment of it. I joined a portrait and life drawing and

painting group that met weekly and pooled their money to pay for a model.

I’ve worked in charcoal, pastels, oils, and finally tried my hand at watercolor. I studied the work of Charles Reid and loved the freshness and spontaneity of his watercolors. The wonderful splishes, splashes, drips and happy accidents make watercolor especially fun. Later I became an avid fan of Mary Whyte and her paintings of people. Watercolor is hard to master, and I love the quote, “Oil painting is like training your dog, and watercolor is like training your cat.”

October Membership Meeting At the October Membership Meeting Janet Rogers demonstrated her senstive approach to painting portraits and florals. She started with the sketch of a photograph which she had transfered to watercolor paper and then worked down the page starting with light colors and paint-ing around the whites. It was fascinating to see the image appear on the paper.

Bill Dale’s painting, “Kimee”, was selected by Janet Rogert as the winner in the Signature Category of Paint-ing of the Month.

Paintings of the Month winners in

the Non-Signature Category were:1st Janet Southern “Old Man”2nd Krystyna Dale “Cat”3rd Barbara Lindley “Bellisima Fiori”

ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT

I get the most joy out of portrait art and the challenge of capturing a likeness, so I have concentrated mainly on portraits and figures in my paintings. I struggle with being too critical of my work and am never completely happy with the end result. I’m hoping I can continue to improve and some day conquer that critical demon.

Janet Rogers conducted two three day workshops for the SWS in October. A very generous teacher, Janet brought fresh flowers to use as subject matter on the first day. On the next day, students painted from photographs of people and were shown how to paint translucent flesh tones while focusing on the gesture of the person. On the third day they completed portraits in the morning, and figures in the afternoon. Janet had some of the participants pose to help practice figurative drawing.

The photo on the right is Janet with the demonstration in the mirror above her. The participants in Session 2 are pictured below.

November Membership Meeting - Stephen Quiller

November Watercolor Workshop - Stephen Quiller

Stephen Quiller is an award winning and sought after artist, workshop teacher, author, and exhibition juror. SWS is pleased to be hosting him for the November membership meeting and painting workshop. Quiller is the developer of the Quiller Color Wheel which is the basis of his color system and can be used as an aid in mixing oil, watercolor, and acrylic.paints. He also has designed a popular round watercolor palette that is based on the color wheel and he iis the author of six books about water media painting and color theory and several DVDs.

At the November meeting, Stephen Quiller will describe his approach to color and painting with water media including watercolor, gouache, acrylic, casein and their combinations, and his use of color. This is certain to be a really engaging demonstration and not to be missed.

In additon to being the featured presenter at the November Membership meeting, Stephen Quiller will conduct a three day workshop on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday November 13, 14 & 15. In this workshop, Quiller will focus on color, color relationships and color mixing so that artists can better understand color harmony. Nominations Open for 2020/2021 Board MembersA lot of dedicated people work together to make the Southwestern Watercolor Society the terrific society that it is. Just as we reach the midpoint of the membership year, it is time to begin the search for new leaders and volunteers to continue all the great opportunities we provide for painters and others interested in watermedia. President Lou Bono has announced that nominations are now open for the Board for the 2020/2021 Board year.

There are a number or positions open for the next term. The current 1st Vice President for Programs, Jeff Jenson, will assume the Presidency. Leadership positions that support him include

The incumbents of some of these positions will want to continue in their roles for another year, but the By-Laws limits the number of terms that Officers and Committee Chairs can serve. We always need people who are not currently officers to be willing to assume those positions that will be becoming vacant.

Volunteering to be a leader benefits SWS, of course, but it also has benefits for the volunteer:• Volunteering at SWS connects you to others who share your interest in watermedia • Volunteering at SWS can give you additional understanding of watermedia and advance your career• Volunteering at SWS gives you a sense of satisfaction because you learn new skills and give back

to the group• Volunteering at SWS is fun

If you would like to be considered for a leadership role by the nominating committee, please contact Jeff at [email protected]. You may also nominate yourself or someone else at the November 12 member meeting by submitting your name and position in the nominations box that will be at the member table. We hope to complete nominations for Officers and Committee Chairs by February, and the membership will-vote by April for installation at our last meeting in May. The SWS year runs from June 1 through May 31.

In addition to leadership roles, we are also looking for committee members, especially for the 2020 Exhibition committee. These volunteers work with the 4th VP Exhibitions. To learn about the Exhibition leadership roles that are available and to volunteer, please contact current 4th VP Exhibitions, Regina Carl at [email protected].

Our leaders will tell you that volunteering made their experience at SWS more valuable. Join the Team today!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SWS Board Updates Workshop PolicyBackgroundSWS has recently experienced an inordinate number of workshop cancellations, most often in the last few weeks before each workshop. Our workshop coordinators filled as many open positions as possible, however, both Janet Rogers’ workshops were in jeopardy of being cancelled due to late withdrawals.

The current policy has not rewarded members who cancel early in order to help others attend and penalized those who cancel late. Low attendance also doesn’t enhance our standing with to our guest artists who believe we have a vibrant organization that can fill a workshop.

The Board has decided to make a change to be fair to members who want to attend the workshops as well as to the workshop artists. After careful consideration and review of numerous other art societies’ cancellation policies, the SWS Board has revised the Workshops Registration and Cancellation Policy, as follows:

Terms and Conditions• Workshop enrollment is limited to a maximum set out on the SWS website. Reservations are

accepted in the order in which they are received. Waitlists are also formed in the order that requests are received.

• A $100 deposit per workshop must accompany the signup to reserve a space. Confirmation of enrollment will be sent upon receipt of the deposit (or full payment). The deposit is non-trans-ferable to any other person or workshop.

• Balance of payment is due one month before the workshop start date and if not received by that date, the student may lose his/her place.

Workshop times, location, directions, artist’s outline and supply list are available on the SWS website.

Cancellation / Refund Policy• The cancelling member shall contact the Workshop Coordinator as soon as possible to facili-

tate replacement. The SWS waitlist has first priority over other students who are not on the wait list.

• Upon a student’s cancellation of a workshop at least one month prior to the start date of the workshop, the workshop fee is 100% refundable.

• Upon a student’s cancellation of a workshop less than one month prior to the start date of the workshop, the entire fee is refundable only if the space if filled and paid for. If the space is not filled and paid for, the workshop fees are refundable, less the $100 deposit.

• Once the workshop begins, there are no refunds for no-shows or withdrawals. SWS reserves the right to cancel workshops due to insufficient enrollment or other reasons.

• If SWS cancels a workshop, applicants will receive a full refund.

The Board believes the new policy guidelines will make the opportunity to attend our workshops more fair to our members and our guest artists.

Pam also led the planning, staffing and execution of our very successful May fund raiser, benefiting our exhibition. Thank you, Pam! Well done!”
