This term our topic is Superheroes The children will be learning about the following:

• English – We have started the term by studying non-

chronological reports on superheroes; examining the features of writing needed to write a report, such as: titles, captions, technical vocabulary. Over the course of the Autumn term, we will be looking at story-telling, instructions and poetry.

• Maths – We have started the term by focussing on

place value. In addition, the children will be learning to add and subtract two and three digits using mental and written methods. It is important that your child practises his/her times tables and division facts on a regular basis.

• Science - Our Science unit for this half term is ‘Forces and Magnetism.’ We will be studying what is meant by different forces and the forces involved in magnetism.

• Geography- The Geography unit for this half term is ‘Our Local Area.’ The children will be learning about their locality and producing maps to identify key features in the local area.

• Visual Arts - In visual arts, we are looking at the artist

Archimboldo. The children will be producing artwork

using fruits and vegetables.

• Guided Reading - Your child will be receiving one session of guided reading per week with the class teacher. A session lasts approximately 45 minutes and is with 5-7 other children. Guided reading involves reading a text and discussing it as a group - making predictions, spotting punctuation, making inferences and describing how a text makes us feel and why. Furthermore, our class novel this term is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which we will be reading at the end of the day.

What you can do at home:

Ø Read with your child every day. This will increase their fluency and will assist them in their comprehension.

Ø Sit with your child to complete their homework, encouraging them to use ambitious vocabulary in their writing.

Ø Assist your child in learning their times tables with the corresponding division facts.

Ø Encourage your child with their handwriting so it becomes legible and joined.
