FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK During this ten-day period between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday, the Church prays for a fresh, new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can be described as God on the move… the divine mover and shaker who makes Christ present to us and makes the Lord’s grace available to us and makes God’s saving plan happen for us. Just think about the incredible resume of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was at work at the beginning of me, crea ng the whole world and all it contains, especially the human family. The Holy Spirit raised up the ancient people of Israel to be God’s chosen people, and the Spirit protected them in their great escape from slavery in Egypt, guided them to their Promised Land and brought them back home a er a long exile in Babylon. The Holy Spirit helped prophets speak the Word of God un l nally the Holy Spirit conceived Jesus, the eternal Son of God in the heart and womb of Mary. The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus at his bap sm and empowered him throughout his public ministry to proclaim the Kingdom of God in bold preaching and miraculous healings. The Spirit for ed Jesus to do the Father’s will in the Garden of Gethsemane, and strengthened Jesus to endure his passion and cross with unparalleled love. And a er three days, the Holy Spirit awakened Jesus from the sleep of death in the tomb, and then made the risen Lord visible and tangible to the disciples for 40 days a er the resurrec on, un l the Spirit nally li ed Jesus beyond our sight in the ascension. And when the Holy Spirit fell on Jesus’ disciples at Pentecost, the Spirit began to make Jesus present in the Church and in the world un l Jesus comes again in glory. The bo om line couldn’t be clearer. The Holy Spirit is God on the move, strengthening our faith in Jesus and promp ng us to respond to Jesus’ love in our lives. The fact is… in his Holy Spirit, Christ remains with us no ma er what, in good mes and bad, un l the end of me.

In the prayer St. John records as part of Jesus’ Farewell Discourse, the Lord prays that his Father will consecrate his disciples in the truth. This happens by movement of the Holy Spirit in us. To be consecrated in the truth means to be anointed and set apart for the mission of Christ. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we were all anointed at our bap sm, when the holy water was poured over us, and the sacred chrism was smeared on our heads. And so, because of the work of the Holy Spirit, we have all been set apart to bear witness to Christ. This happens in the simplest of ways… when we keep our cool and stay calm when our plans get messed up… when we spot and serve someone in distress instead of ignoring them… when we put our trust in God even in moments of doubt or heartache… when we rejoice in someone else’s success rather than be jealous and resen ul of them… when we let go of our grudges and forgive someone that has caused us hurt… when we move beyond our own problems and listen to somebody else’s struggles and pain. These examples are all clues of the Spirit’s work to keep us close to Christ, all solid evidence we are living in the truth of the gospel.

The Holy Spirit is always on the move, at work 24/7 to keep us close to Jesus, to help us remain in his love. But the Holy Spirit needs us to say “yes” to his o er of assistance; it’s up to us. During this month we honor Mary, the Mother of Jesus and Jesus’ rst and best disciple… she always said yes to the Holy Spirit… and with the help of her prayers and example, she can help us say “yes” to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Mary actually believed the Archangel Gabriel when he told her that nothing is impossible for God. And through Mary, the Holy Spirit gave us the Savior of the world and as a result we can believe that nothing is impossible for us. With the Spirit’s help, our anger can so en into compassion; our fears can be channeled into courage; our sel shness can give way to charity; our con icts can give way to peace; our enslavement to addic ons can be broken; and our doubts can nd clarity and resolu on. So in the coming days, may the Spirit of Jesus fall afresh on us and ll us with every good gi to live in Christ! We call upon the Holy Spirit at every Mass we celebrate… to move among us and transform our simple wafers of bread and cups of altar wine into the Body and Blood of Christ… the spiritual food and drink we really need to remain in loving communion with Jesus the risen Lord.

If you are visiting Ave Maria parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you again.

Did you know that last Thursday was the Feast of Our Lady of Fa ma?

On May 13, 1917, in the ny village of Fa ma, Portugal, three peasant children -- Francisco, Marta, and

Lucia -- were tending sheep when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared as “a Lady all in white, more brilliant than the sun… indescribably beau ful.” From May through October of that year, the Lady appeared to the children on the 13th day of each month.

She promised that God would grant peace to the en re world if her requests for prayer, repara on, and consecra on were heard and obeyed. She asked that people pray the Rosary and add the Fa ma Prayer at the end of each decade. While many people believed the children, many others ridiculed their story. So, when it became known the Lady would visit the children for the last me on October 13, 1917, and had promised a sign “so that all may believe,” nearly 70,000 believers and scep cs alike journeyed through torren al rain and mud to be in a endance.

And what they saw was that the “clouds separated…and the sun appeared between them in the clear blue, like a disk of white re.” Then the huge reball began to “dance,” whirling in all direc ons and

inging out brilliant colors. Within 10 minutes, the sun returned to its normal place in the sky and people discovered that their previously drenched clothing was completely dry. This has become known as The Miracle of the Sun.

Francisco and Marta died a couple of years a er the visions at Fa ma, as the Lady had foretold would happen. They were canonized by Pope Francis in 2017 on the centennial of the rst appari on. Sister Lucia died in 2005 and is being considered for bea ca on. h ps://fa machurchabq.org/our-lady-of-fa ma-miracle

Miracle of the Sun Spinner Craft

Supplies Needed: Foam Board Hole Poking Tool Embroidery Floss Scissors Markers Direc ons: 1. Trace a circle onto your foam board using a drinking

glass and cut it out with some scissors. Then poke 2 holes in the middle of the circle, trying to get these holes as close to the center of your circle as possible.

2. Using markers, color your version of the “miracle of the sun” on the circles.

3. For each spinner you will need 2 pieces of embroidery oss. Each piece should be about an arm’s length. Thread one through each hole of your spinner and knot them together on both ends. This will put your spinner on one big “loop”.

4. Now it’s me to have fun! Hold your strings on each end, and twist your sun spinner up just a li le bit. Pull the strings in opposite direc ons at the same

me -- but just for a second! Let the strings go loose and it will begin to twist itself up. When it stops spinning, pull both of the strings in opposite direc ons again and let it spin some more. Soon, your sun will be dancing, spinning, whirling, and jumping around!
