North Birmingham Academy based in Perry Common won the AlexTimpson ARC Attachment Award for secondary schools for its workaround attachment and trauma awareness This approach meansthat teachers emphasise the importance of understanding theemotional and learning needs of their pupils and provide support inthese areas rather than focusing on the curriculum alone The awardwas presented during this yearrsquos Attachment Research CommunityConference a gathering of leading academics and practitioners inthis area

The academy part of E-ACT multi-academy trust received a rating oflsquoRequires Improvementrsquo from Ofsted in 2016 and the proportion ofdisadvantaged pupils for whom the academy receives pupil premiumis in the highest 20 per cent of state-funded schools nationallyHowever after making a number of changes North BirminghamAcademy was rated lsquoGoodrsquo by Ofsted in 2018 with inspectors praisinga number of areas including its leadership quality of teaching andimprovements in attendance rates
A key element of the academyrsquos transformation has been itsintroduction of the Thrive Approachreg which promotes children andyoung peoplersquos positive mental health by helping adults to respondeectively to the studentsrsquo diering and sometimes distressedbehaviour as well as measuring their progress as they move forward
