2019 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
On behalf of the Floyd Valley Board of Trustees, I want to thank everyone for the continued support of Floyd Valley Healthcare. As the only hospital in Plymouth County, FVH continues to work smart to provide our communities with the highest level of compassionate care with a home-town friendly touch.
With the landscape of Medicare/Medicaid and private insurances continually changing, it takes great skill to keep a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) such as FVH viable. The board and staff work together to balance the needs of making our services affordable while still making a profit. And, as a not-for-profit organization, any positive net profit balance at the end of the year can then be invested into additional equipment and/or services for our patients.
One example of this is our 3D mammography machine. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to purchase this machine this year. Since being installed and tested this spring, over 670 exams have already been performed by our six certified techs. We have received many positive comments on this new technology including increased comfort level in both the room and the test itself.
I am proud to say that Floyd Valley Healthcare was named among the 67 CAHs to Know by Becker’s Healthcare. FVH was one of six facilities recognized in Iowa to be listed based on clinical quality and excellence in care delivery. Floyd Valley Community Health was recognized as a 2018 Premier Performer by SHPBest. This places us in the top 5% nationally and just one of four programs in Iowa to be honored. With that said, we plan on winning more awards in the years to come.
In conclusion, our Board of Trustees is extremely proud of Dustin Wright being named one of the 70 Critical Access CEOs to Know in less than one year on the job with us. This tells our board that our health care organization has an outstanding reputation and work ethic from top to bottom to be able to draw a person of Dustin’s caliber to Le Mars. We have a CEO, management team, and staff in all departments of our hospital which the Ice Cream Capital of the World can all be extremely proud of.

It is with great excitement we can release our 2019 Annual Report. As in years past, Floyd Valley Healthcare has much to be proud of. FVH received two separate nominations as a top Critical Access Hospital not only in Iowa but the nation. Floyd Valley Community Health was recognized as a top performer nationally as well. The accolades are great but this only begins to tell the story of how our entire organization places our consumers first. Our emphasis on high quality services while exceeding expectations will continue to drive our growth as an organization serving all of our communities. We are blessed to have a very engaged Board of Trustees, long-standing providers, tenured leaders and care givers through all of our departments. It is not a secret the healthcare industry is going through significant change on many different fronts. FVH is prepared to meet these challenges by following our mission of being a progressive healthcare partner, serving you with compassion, integrity and service excellence. FVH saw growth in many departments over this past year, most notably in outpatient services. Our emphasis on continued growth is evident with new technology purchases such as 3D mammography. It is our goal to keep you healthy; preventative screens such as mammograms are critical to early detection of any future medical issues. Meanwhile, we look forward to further advancements in 2020 to ensure we remain the provider of choice for Plymouth County and beyond. I would like to thank all of our volunteers and auxiliary members for their continued support and dedication to FVH. We are fortunate to have such giving communities not only in volunteer hours but dollars donated to our Foundation. We simply could not maintain and grow without this level of generosity. Personally, it is hard to believe I have been with FVH for almost a year! Not a day goes by that I do not feel blessed and fortunate to be a part of FVH! I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead of us and thank you for supporting FVH!

Research indicates that patients who have a family healthcare provider live longer, healthier lives. They are less likely to be hospitalized or die from chronic illness. And they have a trusted partner that is dedicated to keeping them and their entire family healthy.
Floyd Valley Healthcare’s providers are all board certified, each with unique interests. They have the education and expertise to address not just one aspect of your health or illness, but everything from a cold or a few stiches to complex, ongoing conditions that affect multiple areas of your life. Even obstetric care and delivery! They coordinate with other providers and departments at the hospital when you need additional care.
The addition of advanced practitioners, including physician assistants and nurse practitioners, benefits patients also. These providers are licensed professionals who provide services that have been offered by doctors in the past. This includes assessing patients, making diagnoses and prescribing medication. Just like physicians, these providers stay current on the latest research, treatments and standards of care and provide patients’ access to the latest treatments and innovations in healthcare.

We have all heard stories about getting mammograms. In fact, discomfort or pain are key reasons why many women avoid potentially life-saving mammography exams. In breast care, being proactive can make the difference in a woman’s life. The fact still remains, early detection saves lives!
The new 3D mammography system achieves the highest depth resolution while alleviating many of the fears associated with mammograms by: • Personalized exams with optimal results • Improved design for easier positioning, featuring soft edges for support and high comfort • Quicker exams with less radiation exposure than a 2D system • Sharper images reduce repeat tests and unnecessary steps
What do the experts see with the new 3D system? • Advance screening and diagnostic results – with high diagnostic accuracy • Make the invisible visible • Standardize image quality • Get more than just another view • Rely on exact density assessment • Elevate patient experience – with smart automation • Personalize compression for optimal results • Enhance patient comfort • Reduce unnecessary steps • Innovate care delivery – designed for excellence today and tomorrow • Offer patients certainty by delivering excellent imaging for diagnostic accuracy
If you are over 40 (earlier if there is a family history) and have not had a mammogram, the time to call for your mammogram is now - 712.546.3394! Do it for you and your family!

WHY 3D MAMMOGRAMS?

Through various fundraising efforts, the Floyd Valley Auxiliary was able to donate $45,000 towards the purchase of a BioFire FilmArray System for the hospital lab.
The BioFire FilmArray System has set the standard for molecular diagnostic testing. Integrated sample preparation, amplification, detection and analysis will allow accurate results that can be delivered in about an hour.
For Floyd Valley, this means quicker answers which can lead to shorter length of stay, fewer microbiology tests being sent to an outside lab, improved antibiotic stewardship, and better infection control. Patients will get appropriate medications quicker, if needed, all leading to better patient satisfaction.

Most people do not think about their local Emergency Department, that is until they or a loved one need it. Rest assured, at FVH we are always thinking of how we can best serve those that need us!
Located on the east side of our campus, the ED is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a dedicated physician and nursing staff to make sure we are there when you need us most. Nurses working in the ED are required to be certified in both ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course). Most nurses also are certified in PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program). What does all that mean? That the staff that will treat you have the training to deal with a variety of traumatic and emergency events.
Patients should come to the ED if they are experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, stroke symptoms, sudden and severe pain, loss of consciousness, large cuts, excessive bleeding, broken bones, etc. In case of an emergency, please call 911 to receive advance care while traveling to the hospital.

When many people think therapy, they probably picture athletes recovering from an injury, or even older athletes receiving treatment for injuries back from their glory days. Floyd Valley Therapies can help patients recovering from procedures like hip and knee replacements, that shoulder that acts up when it’s going to rain and wrist or hand fractures/surgeries. Stroke patients may also benefit from therapy services.
However, you don’t have to be “of a certain age” to visit the physical, speech and occupational therapists at Floyd Valley Healthcare. In fact, patients are just as likely to roll into therapy in a stroller as a wheelchair.
Floyd Valley Pediatric Therapy is a multidisciplinary department, bringing together physical, speech and occupational therapy teams. The program is led by a pediatrician, supplemented with social services, and works closely with the patient’s referring physician to provide a wide array of treatments and services. Children can benefit greatly from therapy, especially if they encounter developmental challenges or delays. Children may face a unique set of issues that can be addressed with pediatric therapy, allowing them to more fully participate in every aspect of their young lives.

ALL ABOUT HELPING THE KIDS
Pediatric therapists work with young patients to help facilitate and encourage normal developmental milestones. Whether that’s walking, talking or even eating, therapists take a compassionate and specialized approach with their young patients. Since children often learn through play, therapy is developed with that in mind.
