K-6 Environment Initiatives
Over the past two weeks Primary students have been excited to begin preparing our new garden beds for planting our Summer crop These garden beds were built for us by the TAS Faculty after Ruby and Chloe (Year 5) made a proposal to Mr McGrath in 2017 about some environmental initiatives they hoped to implement in the school They had asked him for $400 to buy special bins for eligible Return and Earn bottles and cans They planned to fundraise using the 10 cents per bottle and save up to build garden beds I distinctly remember them running back to me excitedly saying ldquoMr McGrath said we can spend $10000rdquo to build the gardens So we started with setting up a Return and Earn recycling program in the Primary area then followed on with creating the garden beds We have also partnered with Bunnings Lakehaven as part of the Schools Sustainability program
Ken from the farm recently taught our Primary students his method for preparing the garden beds to minimise weeds I took Ruby and Chloe to Bunnings last week and we bought two trolleys loads of tools and supplies to get stuck in to the gardens This week Bunnings donated a car load of seedlings as well as some chicken wire to keep the rabbits out Today we start planting our first crop and we are very excited about it
We look forward to sharing our gardening successes (and maybe some failures too) over the coming weeks Keep an eye out in the next newsletter for a report on another great environmental initiative that was proposed by Kai in Year 2 and is being implemented next week

NU (Newcastle University) Racing Team Experience
Last week we had a visit from the NU (Newcastle University) Racing Team One of their team members Chris was an ex Wadalba student who graduated year 12 a couple of years ago They are at university now designing a race car which they brought in to show us We would like to thank them for coming to Wadalba Community School and teaching Stage 3 about their cars They gave our classes many opportunities that other schools rarely get offered As Stage 3 arrived at the primary hall the NU Racing Team were ready for us to have a look at what they have done in the past couple of years We were having so much fun that everyonersquos smile became contagious
Multiple activities were set up by NU Racing for us to participate in One was a realistic VR race car simulator alongside a real model car that everyone got to sit in On the opposite side of the room there was a station for teamwork and another activity was how to build a structure in a team
At the VR station you felt as if you were racing and this opportunity let us take a second to realise how cool being a competitive race car driver could be The simulation was connected to a monitor so everyone else could see what the driver could see in their VR headset
After a good time at one of the stations we switched to another The next project was the teamwork and tower building With this activity we had to stack cups up then down using string and rubber bands BUT there was a twist we couldnrsquot touch the cups with our hands It was so calming and stimulating
At the next spoteveryone had the chance to sit in a car that was only 5 centimetres off the ground While we were waiting we were able to ask any questions about the car how they made it or how to get into the team
For the first time being at a school their performance was absolutely amazing and they should most definitely go share this amazing experience with other schools Thank you so much NU Racing Team

Stage 2 League Touch Gala Day
The annual non-competitive gala day proved again another great opportunity for our students to engage in physical activity This event is run by the NRL and is always such a well-organised event The students have such a great day and the relaxed rules gives all students a chance to enjoy and participate in a sport they may not usually play Students are very keen all year and it has become one of Wadalbarsquos favourite days to attend Our Stage 2 students participated in 8 x 15 minute games against a variety of schools across the Central Coast A side highlight to the carnival was giving Wadalbarsquos new mini bus a run The day was an absolute delight and a big thank you to Mr Baldwin who assisted on the day and also the parents who came along to support us
Unfortunately this year the Stage 3 Gala Day falls on the Year 6 to 7 Sports Day however our Year 5 students will still get the opportunity to participate This carnival will be held on Wednesday 27th November at Berkeley Vale

For the first time being at a school their performance was absolutely amazing and they should most definitely go share this amazing experience with other schools Thank you so much NU Racing Team
