Ive been really impressed with the versatility and innovation in these titles. The audio and video clips are especially engaging and fully support the modern, relevant and thought provoking tasks. They come highly recommended.

    Story time 2

    Read this short story.

    The Tree

The accident happened outside a cemetery. The car was speeding, the driver was drunkand no one was wearing seat belts. They said my sister died instantly when the car hit thetree. Two years later, the tree is still there. You cant see the marks now, but at its basethere is still a little pile of flowers. Every so often I go and look at them. Theyre always dirtyfrom the water and dust thrown up by the passing traffic. You can just about read the cardsthough. Mine is there. I remember writing it: You were the best sister anyone ever had.God bless you. My sister is buried in the cemetery.

Last Sunday I went to talk to her. No one knows I do this. They know that I visit her gravebut they dont know about the conversations. They take place in my head. I realise that mymind is making up her replies but it makes me feel better so I think its okay. I said goodbyeand walked away. I passed the tree and without looking closely I knew there was somethingdifferent. There was a new bunch of flowers. I bent down and read the card. It was cleanand the neat handwriting said: Remember me? I will always remember you. I hope that youhave forgiven me. You were always an angel, now you have wings. I was stunned. I pulledthe card off the flowers carefully, stood up and read it again. It felt as if I had stolensomething as I put it in my pocket and went home.

My Mum and Dad were in the living room. They could see I was upset.

    Whats the matter? said Mum.

I found this card with a bunch of flowers by the tree.

Who is it from? said Dad.

I dont know. Read it and see if you can work it out.

Dad took the card and he and Mum read it. They looked at each other. For a second I thought there was a flicker of something between them but then Mum said, I havent gota clue who wrote this.

It must be from someone we know, I said. Are you sure you cant think of who it might be?

No, said Dad. Cant you think of anyone?

The door opened and my other sister came in.

Hi, she said, and then, Whats up?

I told her about the flowers and passed her the card. She seemed to go into shock, her face turned pale and she gave a long sigh and sat down.

Whats wrong, I said. Do you know who its from?

She didnt answer but started crying. Mum put her arm round her and Dad turned to me. Take it back and leave it there, he said.
