JULY, 2014.ABSTRACTMotivation is a complex aspect of management function which induces job satisfaction and influences productivity. However, the hotel management is constantly faced with the difficulty of retaining employees as they are unable to identify the dynamic factors which motivate employee and contribute to job satisfaction. This study aims at appraising employees motivation and job satisfaction factors in selected hotels in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. A random sampling technique was used to select One hundred and seventy five (175) respondents drawn from workers in five (5) different hotels selected randomly from forty five (45) registered hotels/guest houses found in Ikeja . The primary data collected for this study was generated from a structured questionnaire, and was analyzed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 software for descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, percentages, frequencies. Inferential statistics (chi-square) was used to test relationships between selected variables.

The results showed that the male respondents were 57.7% while female respondents were 42.3%. About 77.7% of the respondents were not more than 40years of age. Majority of the respondents (80.9%) had been working in the hospitality industry for less than ten years while 19.4% had been working in industry for more than ten years. The findings reveal that training and development (4.03), recognition by management (3.89), effective communication (3.93), administrative practices (3.88), recognition from co-workers (3.87), promotion (3.82) are factors motivating hotel employees. 73.1% of the respondents are satisfied with the training and development to a great and moderate extent about the program given to the employees.
