Katia CadetAyisyen Musician Spotlight Q & A

Katia Cadet by Rachel Guerrier

Ayisyen: can you first tell us how you started and who are your major influences??

I took every opportunity that presented itself to me, may it have been talent shows, background singing on album, writing for other artists, really it’s not any one thing but a sequence of many events that lead to the next wonderful experience. I had a dream as a little girl, I never lost sight of that, I be-lieved one day I’d get to do exactly what I wanted to do and here I am, doing just that.

I have many many influences from differ-ent eras, cultures, genres and styles, but the ones that stand out and had the most impact on me are, Michael Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sade, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Roberta Flack, Whitney Houston, and Stevie Wonder.

AN: I see from your website that you cover a lot of music styles: soca, R&B, zouk, Reggae…what is your favorite?

Funny you ask that, I just made a post on facebook about that very subject, this is how it went; “I have a hard time choosing one or the other... Zouk or Kompa ~ Dance Hall or Roots Reggae ~ R&B or Hip Hop

~ Salsa or Merengue ~ Soca or Calypso ~ Jazz or Pop ~ When it come to music I am very very GREEDY, don’t make me choose, I love it all. love Music PERIOD!!!“. That’s my truth! No favorite, I truly love it all!!!

AN: Give us three words that describe your musical style? and why?

I’d have to say eclectic, sophisticated & sensual. Eclectic because I use different genres, languages, vocal tonalities and singing flow & styles to deliver the most au-thentic interpretation. It was important to me that from my first album I put myself out there in all of my dimensions. Sophisticated because I wanted to provide a certain level of quality in the sound, originality, innovation, melody, chord progression, harmonies, but while maintaining a loose, easy listening and feel good quality as well. And last sensual because I thought that the very feminine, womanly touch was missing in this very male dominated Afro-beat world of music. We need more females in the game period. My thing is about a smooth, sensual, rich, heartfelt and authentic delivery.

AN: Are you with a label or more of an independent artist?

I am signed to Heavytone Records, anindependent label based in New York which thefounder & president is Kevin Myers. I mentionhim because had he not recognized what I hadto offer, I would not be out there.

Page 7: Ayisyen Newspaper

AYISYEN - MARCH 2013 07

AN: Where have you performed? Do you have any upcoming shows? How can one see you perform or hear your music?

I am brand new to the scene as a per-forming artist, my first single has just been released, and I’m working on the second single as we speak, so I have not announced any dates yet, but I will be scheduling a North American promo tour soon, the dates will be announced via twitter, facebook and my artist page. www.facebook.com.katiacadet / www.twitter.com/katiacadet / www.

AN: Do you write your own songs and what are the main themes or topics that you like to sing about?

I write all lyrics, melodies, sing all the backgrounds and vocal production to all my songs, I’m a writer first. My

v favorite topic of all… “LOVE”. AN: What are your immediate and future goals?

I have endless dreams for the future and so much on my plate I do not know here to start, but I can say that Haiti’s children are dear and near my heart and I think of new ways to make a difference there everyday. As for now, I’m working on the next couple of singles releases, a building a tight live show.

Anastagia Pierre

Anastagia Pierre is an inter-nationally recognized model,

Haitian Writer Dany Laferrière’s New Book: “The World is Moving Around Me”

HaThis is a moving and revelatory eyewit-ness account of the quake and its after-math. In a series of vignettes, Laferrière reveals the shock, rage, and grief ex-perienced by those around him, and the acts of heroism and humanity he wit-nessed. In this re-gard, his is a concise and perceptive addi-tion to the important canon of disaster re-portage.

And yet Lafer-rière is a novelist,

not a journalist, and his writing bears the weight of survivor’s guilt. In one recol-lection, Laferrière’s nephew, astonished at still being alive, asks his uncle not to write about “this;” “this” or “the thing” being too horrible to name, let alone give up so eas-ily to those who were not there. But Lafer-rière cannot make such a promise. Still, his own act of writ-ing raises questions: to whom does this disaster belong? Who gets to talk and write about it? The World is Moving Around Me is not only a chronicle of one of the most devas-tating natural disasters of our time, but also a personal meditation on the responsibility and power of the writ-ten word, of bearing witness.

L’union ( Unity in French) Suite Blog is a visual scrapbook of my Haitian culture, news, fashion and my music. I love pictures, I wish I could capture every moment of everything and relive it over and over again.

My name is Mrs. Wanda; I’m a Haitian-Turks Islander (Turks & Caicos) who grew up in South Florida not having much knowledge of my Haitian Culture. I couldn’t speak a word of creole until my sophomore year in college. I feel like I missed so much of who I am grow-ing up and want to spend the rest of my life learning and also educating others of Haiti, Haitians and the culture.

Lunion Suite was created in 2011 with a scrap-book layout to serve as a daily culture, news, fashion and music picture blog for all the

other young sophis-ticated Haitians of the world. This blog will aim to highlight positive community leaders and uplifting stories about Haitian-Americans in their local community and more.

Haitian-American defined: Haitian-Americans are Amer-

icans of Haitian heritage, or Haitian-born people who are naturalized citizens or perma-nent residents of the United States. The larg-est proportion of Haitian-Americans live in South Florida, New York, Washington, D. C., Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston. According to the 2009 the US Census, there are an esti-mated 1,000,000 Haitian-Americans living in the U.S. Background: Haitians that emigrated to the United States brought many of their cultural practices and ideologies to their com-munities. Many foreign-born Haitians went into the business sector, often setting up their own businesses.

Although majority of the blog will focus on Haitian culture, I am a Fashion & Music fa-natic, so you will get a daily taste of my fa-vorite fashion and music picks. I hope that this blog will serve as my suite to -

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

By Swoan Parker

For anyone who loves fashion, an announcement of Fashion Week brings to mind runways in New York, Paris, and Milan, but never Haiti. So when my editor requested that I cover Haiti’s first Fashion Week, I was pretty intrigued.

I immediately began researching Haitian designers who live and produce their creations on the island. I first contacted Michel Chataigne, who I learned was very accomplished in his own right, having shown internationally and with his ready-to-wear lines already selling in major U.S. stores.

Because Haitian designers don’t receive the same brand rec-ognition as their international counterparts, it seems difficult to get a strong foothold here. The segment of the population that has the purchasing power to afford designer brands will most often travel out of the country to purchase them, even if at a higher [email protected] Answer Key: to entertainment quiz: All eight is of Haitian decent you
