St. Benedict the Moor & St. Mary Churches Pastoral Region One Dayton, OH July 21, 2013
FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK OUR DAILY TASK AND OUR
RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD In the gospel today, we listen to the story of Martha and Mary. The story seems to teach us a lesson that we must not let the affairs of this life, innocent though they be in themselves, prevent us from attending primarily to the one affair that really matters, our future life and our relationship with God. The emphasis, then, is on Martha rather than on Mary. In her over-excitement to prove herself a kind and true hostess, she bent all her energies to preparing an excellent meal. She had no time to listen to the Master's words of divine wisdom. The work she was doing was excellent and faultless in itself. She need not and should not have excluded learning from Christ's teaching while doing that good work. Like Martha, many "good" Christians are "anxious and upset" about many earthly concerns. These concerns are necessary. This we know. A man must earn his daily bread; a wife must cook and wash and labor for her husband and family. This is what God himself expects us to do. What we need not and must not do, however, is to forget or exclude God in the process. Our daily tasks, whether in the office, workshop, or home, are prayers that are honoring God and thanking him for the many gifts of mind and body that he has given us, if we offer them to him and do them with this intention, they are indeed perfect prayers. This is where so many fail. They spend days, months, maybe years, intent solely on their earthly tasks, without a thought for their future fate in the life that is to come. Yet a truly profitable Christian life is so easy for the vast majority of true Christians. A short morning prayer can be said while dressing. Thus we offer to God the day with all its joys and sorrows, all its trials and tests. It will mean that the day is registered to our account in the Book of Life. A few moments of thought for God and his goodness every now and then during the day will help immensely to keep our morning offering alive and active. A few moments on one's knees beside the bed before retiring to rest, thanking God for the day he has given us, and asking pardon for the faults committed, is not too difficult for anyone. A day such as this is a day spent in the service of God, such as will ensure a happy future when our last day comes. Mass and Holy Communion will round out each week for all practicing Christians. Besides, everyone ought to do some good reading; Spiritual, scriptures or books about life. The knowledge gained from those readings, is a must today for anyone who really wants to help his fellow human, many of whom have lost their bearings and need a helping hand to put them back on the right road. Yes, while active in the necessary affairs of this world, providing for the earthly necessities of ourselves and our dependents, we can at the same time, if we are sensible and sincere Christians, be storing up merits for ourselves. These merits will give us a pleasant surprise when the day of reckoning comes. Let us not dwell too much on the materialistic needs and forget that of our spiritual needs; “for if we should gain the whole world and loss our soul what benefit is it?”

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
Martha and Mary are the focus of this weekend’s Gospel, which abounds with rich themes about hospitality, service, and finding the right balance between action and prayerful attention to the Lord. Christians who are good stewards of their faith life realize that if they are too busy to enjoy peaceful, private time with the Lord, then something is out of balance in their spirituality. If we make time for Mass, but then carry on with our busy schedules without prayer, meditation and reflection, we are missing out. If we find ourselves anxious and harried by life’s routines, could it be a sign that something in our spiritual life needs some serious attention?
DAY OF REFLECTION
Understanding and Living the Creed: We pray the Creed every Sunday, but how do we apply these foundational beliefs to our lives? Fr. David Endres will present a one-day reflection: “With Heart and Mind: Understanding and Living The Creed” at St. Charles, Kettering, on Saturday, August 10, 8:30-3:30. The day includes teachings, Mass, Adoration, and confession. Cost is $25. Please contact Susie Gross at 890-6262 or [email protected] for more information or to register.
OUR FAITH AND MARY SYMPOSIUM
Everyone is invited to Our Faith and Mary Symposium, July 30-August 1 at the University of Dayton, Kennedy Union Ballroom. Great talks will be given about Mary in Scripture, History, and sharing Faith at work, at home, and in the world. Presenters come from Notre Dame University, Catholic University of America, as well as the University of Dayton. Day-time sessions are aimed for adults and cost $30 a day. The 5 p.m. Mass and 7:30 p.m. cultural events are all free and family-friendly: Mary in Film, the Rosary Rally (outdoor procession in good weather, otherwise multi-media presentation in chapel), and the Marian Hymn Festival. While walk-ins are welcome, advance registration is appreciated for all events: http://ecommons.udayton.edu/ faith_mary/. For more information, contact Clare Jones, (937) 229-4214, or [email protected].
ARCHDIOCESAN TWEETS
#CatholicCincy may soon be a trending topic on Twitter.
Following in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati launched its official Twitter account on Wednesday, July 3.
The new account, under the handle @CatholicCincy, is a joint effort between the New Evangelization and the Communications offices of the archdiocese. New Evangelization office Director Sean Ater expects to do much of the tweeting in conjunction with Communications Director Dan Andriacco.
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has had social media presences on Facebook and You Tube for more than a year. Different archdiocesan offices have each maintained their own social media pages but the addition of the new Twitter handle means there will be an official archdiocesan account on each of the nation’s top three social networks.
Twitter, which was founded in 2006, is a microblogging site. The site allows users to have followers, and to follow the posts of others. Its defining feature is that it limits each post to 140 characters. Another feature allows users to use a hashtag to mark posts with a category that is easy to find. During the March for Life in Washington D.C., for example, users would post their thoughts and write #March4Life. If anyone then searched #March4Life, they would see all the posts with that hashtag.
The fastest growing demographic on Facebook is no longer young people, but their parent's generation. Ater said Twitter has a younger user base, but the growing presence of all generations on social media makes it important for the archdiocese to be represented.
“We used to put people in categories and say the younger generation is using technology and gets all this stuff and the older generation is never going to adopt it,” Ater said. “But I think we’ve seen a slow adoption from the older generation too because that’s just the way the world is moving. Many of them want to communicate with their relatives and get up to date information and the best way to do it now is these new technologies.”
Pope Benedict XVI led by example in December of 2012 by launching @Pontifex, the papal Twitter account. Pope Francis has continued to use the microblogging site to promote the faith and his message. The new @CatholicCincy joins other Catholic dioceses from Ohio on Twitter including Cleveland (@DIOCESEofCLE), Toledo (@DioceseToledo), and Youngstown (@DOYoungstown).
“Twitter is a younger demographic than Facebook usually,” Ater said. “It is quickly becoming one of the best ways to get breaking news. If the pope is on (Twitter), we should be on.”
