Team USA’s John Janawicz, Marshall Kent and Sean Rash earned the gold medal with a six-game total of 3,879 at AMF Bolera Paradise Lanes in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The first three games of the event were contested on the 33-foot Sydney pattern and final three games on the 39-foot Seoul pattern. Kent led the way with a 1,375 series and was followed by Rash (1,259) and Janawicz (1,245). The trio fired 712 in Game 5 to take a big lead on the field and coast to the gold medal. That is, both Jim and Anita each rolled a 300 in the same game for the same team. A St. Louis couple was the first to accomplish the fete. Last Thursday the Mur- tishaw’s did it again. Both Jim and Anita rolled per- fectos as teammates in the first game of Cal Oaks 640 Scratch League. That’s a new national record. They established a new national record by becom- ing the first married couple to roll perfect games in the same game as teammates, two times. Yes, both Jim and Anita each rolled a 300 in the same game as teammates, a second time. ONCE A TIE, TWICE A RECORD. NO SURPRISE. No sur- prise that the Murtishaw’s set a national record. Both are members of the Citrus Belt Hall of Fame. Both have MODESTO, Ca —Yosem- ite Lanes was on an emotional high Tuesday night, Septem- ber 15, when not one 300 game was shot but two. And both were shot for the same game. It gets even better! They were bowled by hus- band and wife - Wayne and Bonnie Garber. And if that’s not phenomenal enough, they were bowling on differ- ent teams and both won their games with this contribution! How much more exciting can it get? Competing in their Tues- day league for just the second week of this Fall season in a league they have bowled in for at least 20 years, Wayne said for that second game, he “was watching Bonnie since the 6th frame” when she was busy stringing her strikes and added, “she didn’t know I was striking.” They were just four pairs away from each other. The crowds gathered in an- ticipation behind their lanes. Bonnie got a loud round of applause when she bowled her 11th. But the applause grew louder as Wayne shot his 12th. Then, just 15 sec- led the Citrus Belt in high average. Both have rolled multiple perfect games and 800s. Anita still holds the Association record for the highest three game series (848) by a woman. NO SURPRISE. No sur- prise that the Murtishaw’s set a national record. Jim is a PBA National Cham- pion who competed on the national tour for nearly ten years. Jim competed in the PBA Tournament of Cham- pions for several years and finished second one time to PETE WEBER, missing a Major Title by just a few pins. Jim regularly averages 230 plus in league play while Anita has averaged 200 or higher for over twenty sea- sons. AMAZING STUFF. NO SURPRISE that such accomplished bowlers have set a national record. The Murtishaw family is prob- ably the NUMBER ONE bowling family in the Cit- rus Belt and this record just solidifies their position as such. The U.S. team of Bill O’Neill, Chris Barnes and Tommy Jones shot 3,767 to take the sil- ver medal, overtaking Colombia in the final game to get to the No. 2 spot. Jones fired 1,306, Barnes had 1,253 and O’Neill shot 1,208 as they finished with a 665 game in the finale to top Colombia by nine pins. “The afternoon pat- tern was difficult but our gold-medal team pulled away after the fifth game,” Team USA coach Rod Ross said. “The last game, both teams bowled great and our silver-medal team was able to jump up the standings. We’re very proud of how both teams performed with the difficult and chal- lenging lane condi- tions.” onds later, as Bonnie prepared for her last ball, she remarked, “Really? Right now?? Ok!” and let ‘er rip to the loudest ovation of the night! Every- one went crazy to witness this once-in-a-lifetime moment! The Garber’s have both been on the bowling scene for many years. Wayne has been bowling since he was 4 years old (43 years) and Bonnie for 27 years. Both have had nu- merous 300 career games— Wayne (over 100) and Bon- nie (8). Wayne’s bowling resume shows he competes and runs scratch tournaments and has for years as well as is a PBA member. Bonnie came from bowling years ago in the WTA (Women’s Tourna- ment Assoc.) where she won a title and WWPB (Western Womens Professional Bowl- ers). Both are members of the Modesto Bowling Associa- tion Hall of Fame. On this special night in their lives, Wayne (a Hammer Ball Rep.) was throwing the Ham- mer Red Pearl Widow ball and Bonnie had switched to her Brunswick Red Solid ball to accomplish this feat. WINNETKA – Fresh off playing host to the “Win a Honda” tournament, Winnetka Bowl will serve as the site of another grandi-ose event. This time it will be the 2015 California state singles champi-onships that will take place 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 and 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. Bowlers can field multiple entries but can cash only once in the top 10. At least one prize will be given out for each six entries. Entry fee is $50. Players will bowl six games. The tournament is open to California United States Bowl-ing Congress mem-bers. About half of Winnetka’s lanes will be allocated for each of the four tournament segments. There will be two handicap divisions: a 176 average or higher and a 175 average or lower. Each division will have a separate male and female com-petition. An optional scratch division is available within each handicap division (separate male and fe-male). Bowlers need to check in at least 45 minutes before the onset of the compe-tition. Each player must submit with the entry a verification of his or her average via a printout from the lo-cal USBC association or www.bowl.com. From the $50 entry

This is the third year of the state singles championships. The last two years the tour-nament was held in Torrance and Visalia. Last year in the men’s competition, Don Sutherland won the 176 & higher handicap division title. Charles Rohlfing claimed the 175 & under division title. In the women’s competition, Darris Ruffner won the 176 & higher handicap division champion-ship. Michelle Kettle claimed the 175 & un-der division title. The state singles championships marks the second major event in four months at Win-netka Bowl.

In late July, Mark Alvarino claimed a 2015 Honda Civic by finishing first in Win-netka Bowl’s “Win a Honda” tournament. Alvarino, a North Hills resident, scored a 246-212 victory over Kelly Manuel of Azusa in a pressure-packed cham-pionship match of the stepladder finals. It’s unclear how much money each of the division champi-ons will earn in the state championships because the rewards will hinge on the num-ber of entries. But Mike Willis, longtime manager of Winnetka Bowl, was clear about one thing about the winning prizes. “It won’t be a car,” he said, laughing.

Three 300s, re-GAINS PBA PERFECT

GaMe lead Parker bohn iii of Jackson, N.J., rolled his third perfect game of the weekend to defeat ernie segura Jr. of Taylor, Mich., 300-191, in winning the PBA50 Howell Lanes East Open presented by Radical at Howell Lanes Sunday. With his three perfect games, Bohn regained the all-time PBA 300 game lead with 104, breaking a tie with fellow PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Oxford, Fla., who has 101 300 games bowled in PBA competition. Bohn, who began his career at Howell Lanes, dominated the field, av-eraging 267 in qualify-ing. brian LeClair of Albany, N.Y., quali-fied second but trailed

Bohn by 286 pins after qualifying. Segura quali-fied third while another hometown favorite, PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Pe-traglia of Jackson, quali-fied fourth. While Se-gura was edging LeClair, 211-191, in the semifinal round, Bohn outscored Petraglia, 257-235, after Petraglia opened in the 10th frame. Bohn earned $1,500 for his first PBA50 Regional title and his 24th overall PBA Regional title.

● September is the final month of qualifying for men and women trying for berths in the PBA Regional and PWBA-PBA Women’s Regional Challenge events which will be held as part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VII in December at the Na-tional Bowling Stadium in Reno. PBA50 Tour Veteran Tom Carter Receives 2015 Dick Weber

Sportsmanship AwardCHICAGO - Tom

Carter, a competitor on the PBA50 Tour for nine seasons, has been selected as the PBA50 Tour’s 2015 Dick We-ber Sportsmanship Award winner by his fellow players.

“It’s better than win-ning a title,” said an emotional Carter. “It’s extremely humbling and I really don’t know what else more to say other than to thank my fellow competitors for the honor.”

In addition to com-peting on the PBA50 Tour, Carter, a player services representative for Brunswick, travels the PBA50 Tour in his motor home with wife Linda who serves as assistant to tournament director John Weber.

The award has spe-cial meaning for Cart-er not only because it was voted on by his fellow players but also because of his admira-tion for the late bowl-ing legend the award

is named after who passed away in 2005.

“It’s special to me because I’ve been a friend of the entire Weber family,” said Carter, a long-time Rochelle, Ill., resident before moving to Co-lumbus, Ohio. “After Dick died (Dick’s son and Midwest PBA Re-gional Manager) Rich Weber gave me one of Dick’s 300 rings and I wear it to this day.”

Carter can also of-ten be heard as a color commentator on Xtra Frame broadcasts of PBA50 Tour events.

“I enjoy doing the commentary immense-ly,” Carter said. “It’s kind of an extension of what I do as a player services rep and pro shop operator. I want to do anything I can to bring enjoyment to the game whether it be working with the guys out on the PBA50 Tour or anyone for that mat-ter.”

The Carters oper-

ate five pro shops and are now based in Wayne Webb’s Colum-bus Bowl in Colum-bus, Ohio. Columbus Bowl has just been announced as the host center for the 2016 Barbasol PBA Play-ers Championship next February.

On the lanes this sea-son, Carter, a six-time PBA50 Regional titlist and 2007-08 Midwest PBA50 Regional Play-er of the Year, had a best PBA50 Tour fin-ish of 16th in the Pasco County Florida Open. His career-best PBA50 Tour finish of fourth came in the 2010 Se-nior HP Lanes Open.

Bakersfield, CA--The 9th annual Don Glover Masters Scratch Tournament will be taking place the week-end (Oct. 3-4) with the event returning back to AMF Southwest Lanes in Bakersfield where it originally started.

So what’s in store for the 2015 event? Besides returning to AMF Southwest Lanes, the tournament oil pattern will be Bourbon Street. And the qualifying squad times for Saturday are a little different than last year—11am for the “A” squad and 4pm for the “B” squad. En-try fee is still just $125 (checks will be ac-cepted until Sat., Sept. 26 for pre-paid entries, and cash only after that date). Re-entry fee is $100 cash.

This year it looks like there is a lot of interest for Women en-trants as several have already entered thanks to the PWBA being brought back. The Glover Masters also accepts Youth com-petition but they will need to sign a waiver available at the event. One in four qualifies

(plus one alternate, if needed) in each of the qualifying squads that will advance to Sun-day’s finals. Bowlers will be bowling seven games in the qualify-ing squad.

On Sunday, the com-petition will intensify as the Glover Masters Finals will start at 9 a.m. Finalists will compete bowling ten games of head-to-head Match Play with their last round being Posi-tion Round. The Top Five will then advance to a Step Ladder Final and the 2015 Glover Masters Champion will be announced around 3 p.m.

Anyone interested in bowling on the tour-nament pattern, it will be put out Mon., Sept. 28, from 5pm-8pm at AMF Southwest Lanes (3610 Wible Road, Ba-kersfield). Cost will be just $1 per game.

The Glover Tour-nament Committee (GTC) is unique in that they all volunteer to put this event on and the only expense is paying the lineage to the center. All other expenses are donated. With this concept, all

money generated each year for that event goes straight to that year’s prize fund. This year the GTC is running an event raffle that fea-tures (2) Brunswick bowling balls, (2) Logo Infusion shirts, “The Game Changer” book by Mark Baker, “The System” DVD by Mark Baker. Tickets are being sold prior to the event to help gen-erate more prize-fund money for this event and winners will be drawn on Sunday be-fore the Top 5 finals.

Cut scores were on lower side but fair to all. Men +53 and Ladies +19 and Super Seniors add-ed were Sun Sundara +47, William Ele +43, and Karen Wade at +4. Top Qualifiers were Vuong Do +136 and Beth Borci +64. They receive paid entries to any regular event for the fine bowling. Vuong and Beth drew for the Match Series 387 Winner with a $435. The Mystery Doubles 364 also no winner. So they carry-over to Covina Lanes. Estimated Match Series $1,400 and the Mystery Doubles est $3,800. The 3-6-9 Pot carried over as Chris Slack got a $100 Consolation, last standing, missed on shot #1. So we go for $1,200 Saturday. The semis began and we saw Steven Alberts lead the field +101 and in 2nd was Gil Gissen-

daner +95. Steven will sit out and bowl for the Title with Gilbert en-tering the top 16 single elims in round two! Now Alberts drew a 194 for the Match Game and unmatched at $3,130. So we esti-mate the Match Game at $4,100 Saturday at Covina. It took only a +37 including 3 guaranteed ladies to make the Sin-gle Elim Finals. Single Elims, TOP 16. Final-ists losing in the first round in 10-16th places were Steven Wong, Jeff Taino, Stan Por, Chris-tine Gonzalez, and Ace Chelsea. They got checks of $100 each.

6-9th places were Alan Aguilar, Wil-liam Ele, Beth Borci, and Bethany Hudson! Round 3 eliminated were Darrow Tiongco, and Bob Selner. They finished in 4th and 5th. Now down to top 3. Gilbert Gissendaner vs George Parker for the right to bowl Steven Alberts for the title! George lost his touch and had some bad luck as Gilbert advanced in a big way in a 220-185 win to bowl the title game. George was 3rd with nice bowling and $200. The Perfect Game by Steve Felegethe Perfect Series by Glenn Allison

Imagine what it would be like to lift a car with your own two hands, dis-cover a particle that trav-els faster than the speed of light, or do anything thought by others to be impossible. It would be personally gratifying to say the least, but now imagine that few have reason to believe you. Years pass and others ac-complish the same things. Their achievements are embraced, but you be-come an obscure answer in, “Trivial Pursuit.” That infuriating sce-nario is exactly what hap-pened to Glenn Allison. On July 1, 1982 he be-came the first bowler to do “the impossible,” de-livering 36 strikes in three consecutive games of sanctioned league compe-tition. That is an indisput-able fact. On Sunday, Septem-ber 20, 2015, at 11:45 AM PST, I called La Habra 300 Bowl and spoke di-rectly to him to find out what actually transpired that day. This is what he told me: Within an hour of the completion of the 900 series, Bob Ramirez, the association secretary, ar-rived to inspect the lanes. As he walked past Tom Miller, the desk clerk, he muttered, “This is f_ _ _ ing ridiculous!” (Tom lat-er relayed that to Mr. Al-lison). Mr. Ramirez com-pleted his task within the next hour and informed Glenn that the lanes had passed. He even showed the paperwork stating that fact. The following morning, the lanes were reexamined by another ABC official (name unknown) who had been flown in from Milwaukee, Wisconsin by the ABC. He issued the final report stating that the lanes had NOT passed. The controversy was born. That the USBC has decided to allow this 900 series to remain unsanc-tioned is the greatest mys-tery in bowling history. Why? Because the rea-sons behind that decision are unjustifiable. Those “official” excuses* are: > The lanes were non-compliant. > An official change to Glenn Allison’s 900 would also impact thou-sands of scores in that era. > The USBC has a responsibility to enforce rules uniformly. > The USBC can’t re-write history and apply a different standard more than 30 years later. Let’s take a closer look at those: > The lanes were non-compliant. “Back in 1982, the rule book required an even coating of lane oil, or dressing in the sport’s

parlance, for 35 to 40 feet after the foul line. The lanes on which Mr. Allison bowled his 900 were found to have noncompliant lane-oil application; in this case, inspection showed it to be unevenly applied.”** That conclusion, if accu-rately reported, is question-able. Were the lanes really noncompliant? Jeff Rich-gels (hall-of-fame bowler and writer of the bowling blog, “The 11th Frame”), in an interview on NPR (March 15, 2015) stated, “The ABC has never really been super definitive about exactly what they thought was wrong with the lanes. Back then it was more a judgment call....” That in itself is inter-esting if we follow the timeline: The lanes were dressed, two shifts of leagues bowled (Mr. Alli-son tallied 578 in the first, the second set produced the 900), the lanes were in-spected and approved, then the lanes are re-examined the following day.......and rejected. The second inspection proves the denial of the award and official recogni-tion of Glenn Allison, was the result of a “judgment call.” Checking a lane for oil compliance the day af-ter it was applied is sense-less. The only way to accurately determine how oil was ap-plied is to check it prior to the start of competition be-cause bowling balls move/remove lane oil. On top of that, the dressing used in the early 80s was more prone to evaporation than today’s formulas and the lacquered wooden lanes were known to absorb some as well. The longer inspection is delayed, the more noncom-pliant the oil will become. If the ABC wanted a valid second opinion, they should have brought in an inspector from a nearby as-sociation and had it done ASAP. Instead, they flew in a second inspector to perform the re-examination the next morning. Why they did this is unknown, but it was irresponsible. The measurements taken by that official were worth-less, yet were used to deny recognition of a great mile-stone in bowling. The bottom line is this: Because the second inspec-tion is apparently the one upon which the ABC’s offi-cial decision was based, no incontrovertible evidence exists today concerning the compliance of the lanes. Since the USBC is steadfast in its defense of decisions made that day, does that mean we are stuck with the ABC’s official judgment? No, it doesn’t. It is also a fact the second ABC official determined, by default, that La Habra 300 Bowl had not followed the rules regarding lane dressing on the night in question. The implication is

Mr. Allison’s performance resulted from the house ap-plying an oil pattern which promoted higher scores. (Unexplained is how that accounts for a 578 in Mr. Allison’s first set or gen-erally lower scores on the night of his perfecto.) But one indication exists that both officials actually ap-proved of the lanes that night. If the man from Mil-waukee truly believed the lanes were noncompliant, it would have been his duty to cite La Habra 300 for disobeying the rules when they applied the oil. That was a serious offense back then. Was a citation issued? No such record exists. By not citing La Habra 300 Bowl, he was either en-dorsing them or was der-elict in his duty. That alone should be grounds to over-turn the judgment against Glenn Allison’s 900. Could either of the ABC’s officials have had a private agenda? A trusted source told me that Bob Ramirez had vowed to never sanc-tion a 900 series because he believed it to be impossible. Add that to his expletive ut-terance and we must won-der, “What happened to his report?” Did he change it or was it destroyed? Hearsay evidence cannot be used to reverse legally binding decisions, but cer-tainly, that official’s history should have been included in the evidence reviewed by the USBC. Was it? Did he have a history of citing La Habra 300 Bowl for such violations? That is un-known at this time. What is known is that honor-scores had recently been approved at this establishment. Did the USBC look at those records? Only a thorough investigation of all the re-cords will bring closure to this matter. What about the Milwau-kee-based inspector? Was he sent to gather useless data to preserve the “Holy Grail” of bowling? This article is not intended to influence this controversy via hearsay or conspiracy theory; it is to question the wisdom of the USBC’s clo-sure of this matter. Takeaway: Lane compli-ance is certainly a valid rea-son to approve/disapprove an honor-score. In the case of Glenn Allison’s 900 se-ries, no valid proof exists to support the denial of a sanction for his achieve-ment. On the contrary, in-dications are that the lanes were compliant. It is baf-fling that the USBC con-tinues to support the judg-ment of an official who was obviously derelict in his duty on that occasion. His opinion should not be used as grounds for denying an award of such gravity. > An official change to Glenn Allison’s 900 would also impact thousands of scores in that era. This type

of argument is used by or-ganizations desperate to make uncomfortable situa-tions go away. On the sur-face it sounds reasonable, but in reality makes no sense at all. This debate is not about scores from that era; it is about one score, by one man, at one center, on one particular day. If others feel slighted by the ABC, they should have the right to make their cases to the USBC also. I find it unrea-sonable to believe any such floodgates would suddenly open because of this mat-ter. Takeaway: This non-is-sue is an illegitimate reason for preventing Glenn Al-lison’s recognition as this sport’s Sir Edmund Hillary. The flawed logic makes this excuse irrelevant. The USBC has a respon-sibility to enforce rules uni-formly. Yes, it does! This is the best argument in favor of reversing the ABC deci-sion of 1982. Bowling hon-or-scores was much more challenging on July 1, 1982 than it is today. Lane sur-faces were macroscopically uneven, lane conditioning was imprecise, and balls were not technological marvels. Back then, 300’s were rare and an 800 series was almost unheard of. To-day, both are common. The fact that the USBC won’t sanction Mr. Al-lison’s history-making performance under more primitive conditions is the height of hypocrisy. They have now sanctioned so many 900s that the achieve-ment is barely noteworthy. Where is the uniformity in that? “Even USBC officials, who laud Mr. Allison’s gra-ciousness and support for the game despite the con-troversy, allow that the 900 series would count were it to be bowled today.”** Well then, the USBC should apply today’s rules UNIFORMLY, recognize that Mr. Allison’s set was nothing short of miraculous given the circumstances, and sanction his 900. Perhaps they believe they can’t because enforc-ing rules uniformly is im-possible if the rules keep changing. Consider this: Sanctioning dozens of per-fect series after easing the pathway to them makes it more necessary than ever to correct this injustice to Glenn Allison. Takeaway: There is flawed logic behind this excuse as well. It reeks of a false agenda and is embar-rassing to the integrity and membership of our sport! The USBC can’t rewrite history and apply a differ-ent standard 30 years later. Yes, it can! That’s one of the reasons the USBC ex-ists; to ensure the perfect game’s history and future are unblemished. Part of that responsibility requires revisiting the past and cor-recting errors. This is not

about rewriting history, it’s about recognizing it. Mr. Allison’s 900 series is a fact and that’s all there is to it. Takeaway: The USBC has painted itself into a cor-ner by declaring this issue to be settled. That is regret-table but also an arguable point. Sometime in the future new leadership will see things differently and do the right thing. Why wait? On September 3, 2015, La Habra 300 Bowl pre-sented a commemorative ring to Mr. Allison. It was created by the company that makes the 900 rings for the USBC. Because this action was not endorsed by our sanctioning body, the USBC logo had to be re-moved. What a shame. Let’s recap the situation. That Glenn Allison rolled the first 900 series during league play is a fact. That the ABC refused to sanc-tion that series is a fact. That the USBC has refused to overturn the judgment of its failed predecessor is also a fact. Now, imagine that you are Glenn Allison. Would you be satisfied? I hope you said, “No!” because it could happen to you as well. When an indisputable achievement goes unrecog-nized by a failed organiza-tion and its replacement digs in its heels based on questionable, decades-old “evidence,” something is wrong. Ideally, the USBC should retract their closure of this matter, reexamine the “evidence,” admit that mistakes were made, and award (without reserva-tion) the “first” 900 ring to Mr. Glenn Allison. Is that likely to happen? Probably not because, as they say in football, “Lacking irrefut-able evidence, the ruling on the field stands!” So....... can anything be done to rectify this trav-esty? Of course! For every problem there’s a solution. The answer to this dilemma is simple: A 900 ring, sanc-tioned by the USBC, should be presented to Mr. Glenn Allison to commemorate his achievement of the first ReCORded 900 series in the history of league bowl-ing. Takeaway: Glenn Allison deserves to be recognized by the USBC as the first to bowl a legitimate 900 series in league competi-tion. If the previous advice were to be followed, he would get that without the USBC having to change its position. The USBC would not have to sanction the se-ries; it would sanction the ring which commemorates THE ACHIEVEMENT (That might mean creating a new award category, but, after all, that is one of their jobs!). While not the ideal so-lution, all goals would be

met. This stain on bowling history would be erased and as a bonus, Glenn Al-lison would also become the first bowler to receive two ultimate awards for the same feat. If any per-son has ever deserved it, this man does! One final thought to consider: - Did Glenn Allison do anything wrong? No! In fact he was perfect not only on the approach but in how he has conducted himself since that night. - Did the ABC do anything wrong? Absolutely! De-nying recognition of Mr. Allison’s achievement us-ing flawed techniques and poor judgment is repre-hensible. - Did the USBC do anything wrong? Yes! Per-petuating the male bovine colonic discharge of the failed ABC is like being an accomplice to a crime. Isn’t it ironic that the one who did nothing wrong is the one being punished? Winston Churchill said, “You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they’ve tried everything else.” The gov-erning authority that col-lects our money and makes the rules which guide our sport have shirked this re-sponsibility long enough. It’s about time the USBC proved Mr. Churchill to be spot on. P.S. Note to the USBC: If funding for the ring is an issue, send me the bill! If you believe Mr. Glenn Allison, now 85, deserves the recognition he has earned, you have the right and responsibil-ity to contact the USBC and say so. Gary Brown Named ManagingDirector of IBC Youth Development

ARLINGTON, Texas – Gary Brown has been named managing director of International Bowling Campus (IBC) Youth De-velopment, supervising all United States Bowling Con-gress (USBC) and Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA) youth programs. Brown will re-port to the executive direc-tors of USBC and BPAA. Brown moves into his new role from director of collegiate programs and youth tournaments. He has been part of the IBC staff since 1999 in roles includ-ing event management, rules counselor, and direc-tor of high school and col-legiate. “We have made great strides since merging the operations of BPAA and USBC youth programs under IBC Youth,” BPAA Executive Director Frank DeSocio said. “Gary has a proven track record of great collaboration with all in-

dustry stakeholders and we believe he is a great fit to continue the effort.” Brown also brings tele-vision event experience to the job, having worked for CBS and ESPN in various production roles of live telecasts. Brown holds a bachelor’s degree in sports marketing/management and a master’s degree in sports management and athletic administration from Indi-ana University. He also was a member of the Hoosiers varsity bowling team. “The recent success and growth of collegiate bowl-ing and national youth tournaments demonstrates Gary’s ability to succeed in this role,” USBC Execu-tive Director Chad Murphy said. “He brings the per-spective of a lifelong bowl-er along with the business experience needed to lead this critical part of the IBC team.” Brown assumes his new role effective immediately.

CONGRATULA-TIONS! ALBERT MITTERBAUER who bowled a 720 series August 27th bringing his career total to three, and all certified. Inter-estingly enough, Albert was born in Austria where bowling didn’t exist. Albert migrated

to Buffalo, NY in 1962. While there 22 years he merely took it up as a recreatial sport. It was in the 1980’s he became seriously involved after relocating to Southern Callifornia. Albert had a 300 game in 2008 but unfortunately it was in an Uncertified League.

If you ask:

Why can’t I ever beat him/her?

What does he/she know that I don’t?

Why is my average the same year after year?

BOWLING NEWSpage 8 September 24, 2015

TARZANA – So how did Alyse McCown re-act after barely missing a perfect game earlier this month – leaving the dreaded 7-10 split on her final shot? “I laughed,” said McCown, who fin-ished with a powerful 298 and walked back into a throng of 100-plus congratulating colleagues who were huddled behind her to watch her final shot. It was the opening night of the 35-week “Guys and Dolls” league season at Corb-in Bowl in Tarzana. “I told people I had 34 more weeks to do it [a perfect game],” glowed the 27-year-old Mc-Cown, taking the dis-appointment of a near-miss 300 in stride. The right-handed McCown finished with a spectacular 786 se-ries (257-298-231). McCown has already rolled three sanctioned perfect games. She now has two 298s and a 299 as well. Even though Mc-Cown didn’t add to her collection of 300s, it was a victory in anoth-er way. She had just recently returned to the sport after a year’s absence because of her pregnancy. “I was just proud of the way I bowled after being out for so long,” said McCown, adding that she wasn’t nervous on her bid for 300. Among the onlook-ers for McCown’s final

alyse Mccown has last laughon near-miss 300

By Fred Eisenhammer

Alyse McCown blasted a 786 series with games of 257, 298 and 231. Photo by Fred Eisenhammershot was top bowler Deanna Peters, who viewed the action from about five lanes away. “She was as cool as a cucumber,” Peters said. “She wasn’t even flus-tered [after the split]. She’s a real cool and gracious lady.” McCown said she started bowling in league play when she was 3. She began bowling competitive-ly at 8. McCown has won numerous junior tournament titles and has an 800 series in her sights. Her high is 798. Not coincidentally, McCown often confers with elite bowler Kelly Gold about the game. Both are Corbin Bowl employees and both

are within a whisker of hitting the 800 mark. Gold had high praise for McCown, calling her a “fabulous” bowl-er. As for which woman would be first to 800, Gold joked: “Age be-fore beauty and I’m twice her age. I’m go-ing to take no mercy on the little yearlings wandering around here.” Later, Gold amended her comment, saying she fully expected Mc-Cown would indeed hit 800 first. As for some day reaching an 800, Mc-Cown acknowledged that it’s on her list of goals. “I need to get that,” she said.

DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!

Downey — The Brunswick Invitational took to the lanes for week 2 of the league and the second week on the house shot the scoring was definitely up from Week 1. The new lane surface seemed to have stumped less people as strikes were all over the monitors.

In the “A” match J.A.T. bagged four wins as Charlie and the Gang managed to sneak out Game 3 910-890 despite their 3rd man lighting it up with a 161. DeeRonn Booker was the highlight put-ting up a 259-289-259=807 series to lead the league. Gabe Marti-nez paced his team with a strong 750 in the anchor spot.

In the “B” match, Paul Varela’s Team 8 kept it going with 4 wins on a consistent 2522 series. David Wilk’s Team 10 did man-age Game 2 with a nice 910 game but just fell short for totals. Eric Snow stayed hot with a 719 set while Wilk paced his team at 684. Team 8 will be in the “B” match next week with their 9-1 record.

Matt Schermmerhorn’s Team 6 got no love getting blanked by Billy Myers’ Team 12 despite Matt’s 746 set and a second consec-utive appearance by the “not bowling” Mikey Villarreal. Sonny Dew led Team 12 with a strong 716 set to help set up the sweep. Team 12’s 5 wins moves them to the “A” match next week with J.A.T.

Kevin Valmonte’s Team 13 got back in the groove with a 4 win night against Arnold Cheesman’s Team 18. Herbert Jones raised his average again with a nice 715 set while Kevin Valmonte bounced back after a rough first week with a 705 to anchor his team. 4 wins moves Team 13 to the “B” match next week as the high of the 8-2 teams.

Eddie Van Daniker’s Team 15 took 4 wins from Sam Hitch-cock’s Team 19. Bobby Hornacek lit the up with a nice 690 se-ries to lead Team 15 while Hitchcock’s 645 wasn’t enough to take more than one.

The new Team 20 anchored by Lee Liu started off hot taking 4 games from Vernon Adam’s Team 17. Lee Liu blasted 751 and

Joe Jimenez put up 750 for Team 20 while Vern led Team 17 with a 681 series.

Jon Diso’s Forest Lanes bunch took 4 wins from Kevin Ga-gnon’s Team 16. Robert Renko led Forest with a nice 722 set bolstered by Diso’s 709. Ben Smith led the Team 16 bunch with a 695 series.

Charles Zelaya’s Team 5 got swept by Mike Cammarata’s Team 11 though Cammarata handed over his spot to sub Jonathan Huezo who took full advantage blasting a 763 set that was too much for Team 5 to overcome. Carl Stokes led Team 5 with a 658 set in the losing effort.

Bobby Campagnale’s Team 3 came back after a dismal first week to take 4 from Leonard Ruiz’s Team 14. Bobby rang his way to a nice 721 series to lead his team while staying on his feet this week. Herman Ferguson’s 714 wasn’t enough but his 265 did help them take Game 1.

Down in the corner, Alhambra Coin Center swept past Andre Pitchford’s Team 2 by barely taking Game 1 then cruising home. Doug Kempt’s 702 paced Alhambra Coin Center while Pitchford’s 675 was high for Team 2.

After two weeks three teams are 9-1 setting up some great matches next week. League average was up led by 807- DeeRonn Booker for the men and 661- Katrina Fujikami for the women. Sidepots went to Kevin Gagnon 279 and Doug Kempt 278 for $63 each while the Game 3 Super Pot went to Eric Snow 289 for $189. Financial Advisors Pot went to DeeRonn Booker $215 and Joe Jimenez/Doug Kempt 278 $50 each. DeeRonn also posted the first honor score of the season wearing out that Brunswick Nirvana for a nice 807 series.

Come on down and see some of So. Cal’s greatest bowlers battle every Monday night at 8:30 at Del Rio Lanes. See you all next week!
