What keeps you up at night? This is the question we asked in a survey we sent out in the spring to the people who attend Bethel. You have given us many responses. Thank you for your input.

There are many things people are con-cerned about these days. Some fear failure-especially the public variety. Some fear that their kids won’t get on the right sport teams or into the right school. Some fear for their health or that their careers will never take off or maybe brought to a sudden end due to the economy or a poor decision. Some are afraid their marriage won’t make it or that a child will never come back to the faith they have tried to instill in him or her.

Bethel’s top five greatest concerns as posted on the survey are our children, the direc-tion of our country, your job and present work-load which has been placed on you at work, at home and even at church. You also responded you are concerned about your personal fi-nances, your relationships, and what the future might hold for you.

Trust me, I am no different than anybody else. I am afraid of having been an ineffective husband or dad, messing up at work or having made a bad financial decision that takes us to a bad place or waking up one day finding myself irrelevant. Trust me, I fear.

Fear can inflict some ugly consequences on our lives. It is perhaps the world’s most per-nicious thief. Its steals our joy in the present and robs us of our hope in the future. It causes us to obsess over ourselves and our limitations in-stead of seeing the possibilities of God’s power in our lives. It can keep us from connecting with other people. It can also erode our faith and confidences, preventing us to dare to do what God has called us to do. It deceives us into crawling inside a box to be safe when we were

really created to take risks in the open air. Fear is a dirty enemy; it doesn’t fight fair.

It finds our soft spots, our weak links, and merci-lessly exploits them. It whispers lies in our ears at night and saps our strength in the morning. It disorients and isolates.

So the psalmist in Psalm121 calls for us to “lift up our eyes to the mountains.” In these words the psalmist captures one of the baptized Christians greatest freedoms. It is the freedom to choose what we will focus on, “what we fear” or The Maker of the heavens and the earth.

When the native Israelite was told to look up into the mountains for help he/she knew that on the mountain, God provided to Abraham a ram to sacrifice instead of His Son. He also knew it was on the mountain that God called Moses from a burning bush (that did not burn up) and then gave His Law. He also knew that on the mountain God gave His mercy and for-giveness at the Temple on the mount in Jerusa-lem.

As a disciple of Jesus we also know that when we look to the mountains right outside Mt. Zion, the Maker of the heavens and the earth died on a cross and promises to provide sanctu-ary for all who are afraid of the consequences of being punished or abandoned for our sins.

Please join us in August for our sermon series “What keeps you up at night?” as we see how it is possible to choose either to focus our attention on what we fear, on our heightened sense of vulnerability and our diminished sense of power, or how we can focus on the One who on a mountain conquered the greatest source of fear. Please join us so we can learn this to-gether. In His Service.

Jambo!! I just wanted to thank all the children from Camp Kilamanjro. The children at our VBS gave so generously to the Shepherd's Little Lambs of Kenya. Over $400.00 was collected and blankets were pur-chased with that money. Yes, there are months in Kenya that are damp and chilly. August and September are considered the winter months over there. A warm wool blanket feels good to a lamb that is sleeping on a damp dirt floor. Thank you, Bethel children, for emptying your piggy banks and sharing your blessings with chil-dren so far away. God is good all the time!!!

One more thank you to all involved with the All Church Sale. It sounds like it was a big success!! Thanks to Andrea Vetter and Carol Stetzler for thinking about the children and their families in Kenya. The Peoria Area Lutherans For Life Chapter #268 would like to thank your congregation for its participation in the 2015 Mother’s Day Diaper Shower. Thanks to the gen-erosity of several local Lutheran churches, we collected 5,141 baby diapers and 2,235 diaper wipes for the Women’s Pregnancy Center in Peoria, IL, Living Alterna-tives Pregnancy Resource Center in Pekin, IL, and Heart House in Eureka, IL; 412 adult diapers for Lu-theran Hillside Village in Peoria, IL and Rosewood Nurs-ing Home in East Peoria, IL. We really appreciate all your support and prayers as we serve the Lord of Life together.

Here’s some news about our Queenwood building project…

Blessings on the Floor – This event, which was sched-uled for July 12, will be rescheduled due to construction delays.

Moving Plans – Teams have been working through the Missouri building to determine what to keep for the new facility. Items that will not be kept will be dis-played for the congregation at a future time. Things that are not taken by members will be donated to a local charity.

Stained Glass – The stained glass window from the 1950’s sanctuary has been removed, cleaned and pre-pared for the new building. Plans are to install the win-dow in the narthex between safety glass so there will be no worry for bad weather or cleaning.

School Roof – The leaky school roof will be re-done in July. Plans are to have this project completed before school begins on August 11.

Selling of Missouri Facility – Two parties have ex-pressed interest in our old facility. Please keep praying that the right group would be able to purchase and use this facility for God’s work.

Pot Luck – A final pot-luck dinner at the Missouri cam-pus will take place on Sunday, August 16 at worship. More details to follow.

Pledges – We have crossed the $2.1 million mark in pledges received as of the end of May. Please continue to faithfully honor your pledges.

As the move time nears and becomes more and more ap-parent, please encourage patience, understanding and lis-tening ears.

Dear Bethel Family … Many thanks for all the well wishes, cards of encouragement, and delicious meals during my “down” time with my back injury. Special thanks to Pastor Mark for the hospital visit. It has been a very busy summer here at Bethel Lutheran School and it’s unbeliev-able how fast time has flown by. It is very exciting to be out here watching the building progress and knowing that in a matter of just a few months, we will be united on our Queenwood campus. Along with the building progressing, we have been hard at work to make sure that we are ready for the coming school year. We will have several new faces in our building at the start of school this year. After 26 years of dedication, Mrs. Moore retired as our 5th grade teacher at the end of the 2014 – 2015 school year. To replace Mrs. Moore for this coming year, we have the pleasure of announcing Mrs. Laura Craig as our 5th grade teacher. Laura grew up at Bethel Lutheran Church. She graduated from Morton High School in 2009 and went on to study Elementary Education at Purdue University. While at Purdue University, she also cheered on their coed cheer-leading team for football, men's and women's basketball, and women's volley-ball. Another big undertaking this year is that our school will be switching from our tra-ditional achievement testing regimen and undertaking MAP testing. MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress. MAP testing is all computer-based and is administered 3 separate times during the year. This allows us to have specific measuring points as to a student’s pro-gress throughout the year. We believe that this will be a big benefit to our stu-dents in that we can more accurately gauge their needs. Our theme for the coming year is Know, Grow and Show the Word, based on Colossians 2:6-7: So then, just as you received Christ Je-sus as Lord, continue to live in him,

rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and over-flowing with thankfulness.

Thank you for your continued support and please continue to keep the school in your prayers as we undertake another exciting school year.

We have an opening for the Bethel Lutheran Operation Christmas Child Coordinator. This is a great outreach that has been steadily growing in participation for the last few years and we would love to see Bethel’s involvement continue to grow. Lutheran Hillside Village is hosting our Benevolent Care Brunch Extraordinaire on Saturday, Septem-ber 19 from 7:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Guests will be treated to a delicious gourmet entree prepared by our executive chef, Mark Shoopman and his talented team.

The cost is $50 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Lutheran Hillside Village Benevolent Fund to support care center (nursing) residents who outlive their resources.

Dr. James Lamb, present executive director, will be retiring at the end of this year. A new director has been selected, Rev. Michael Salemink (SAUL-uh-mink). He is presently a pastor of St. James Lu-theran Church in Lafayette, IN He, his wife, and 3 children will be relocating to the St. Louis area as early as September to make relocating the children and their schooling a positive move. This will assist Rev. Salemink transitioning from parish pastor to the directorship. Dr. Lamb will be available to help with the transition. Rev. Salemink will not be required to be at the Iowa office, as our national director, Scott Licht, runs all the day-to-day operations of the minis-try. The Executive director is more the "face" of LFL who writes, speaks, and preaches. Please keep Pas-tor Salemink and his family in your prayers. Much change is ahead for them.

Bethel’s Book Club will meet on August 24 at Eli’s on Jefferson in Morton at 7:00pm. We are reading The Invisible Girls by Sarah Thebarge. “After nearly dying of breast cancer in her twen-ties, Sarah Thebarge fled her successful career and moved nearly 3,000 miles to pick-up the broken pieces of her life. Instead, a “chance encounter” on the train with a family of Somali refugees swept her into an adventure that changed all of their lives.” Any questions call Sheila at 309-925-5347. Extra copies of the book are in the church office for $11 each.

Players meet once a month, typically on the 4th Sunday evening, from September through April. If you have set up a reoccurring contribution and

wish to change the payment method, fund distribu-

uled Giving” button under “Giving” and make the

desired changes. As the contributions are processed

through the system they will appear under your giv-

ing history which you can review at any time by

clicking “My Giving History”. We are excited about

e-giving and we hope that you will be too! Watch

Children’s Sunday School It’s that time of year again when Sunday School will be kicking back into full swing! On August 16 our regular scheduled Sunday School program will resume. We will need your help in several ways:

PREPARE - We will need all parents to please bring your chil-dren to the Sunday School Big Room on August 16 for reg-istration prior to 9:30 am. This will ensure that we have chil-dren in the correct class and that your kids are not missed!

PARTICIPATE - We need volunteers! Please sign up! This is a wonderful and engaging way to share your faith with the next generation. You don’t have to be a parent of one of the kids either. We’d love to get everyone involved in Sun-day School in some way. The program this year will include new and exciting material that teaches children Bible stories and faith application.

PRAY - We will need your ongoing prayers. Faith formation goes through a critical juncture during the early years of life. It is important that we reach all people, including children, with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Please pray for God’s guidance and help as we seek to do just this!

We are excited about the opportunities that we have at Bethel to teach your children. It is our desire to come alongside of you in support of the faith formation you are already instilling in your kids. Please remember that Sunday School hour is from 9:30-10:30am on Sunday mornings, and again, we

will begin on August 16. We look forward to seeing you and your kids there!
