St. Paul’s is pleased to announce the hiring of Karen Nye for the position of Youth Ministry Director. This is very exciting news for our church family. As you may recall at the Annual Congregational Meeting in January, 2012, the congregation approved the hiring of a Youth Ministry Director. I am pleased to tell you that we were very fortunate to find a person within our congregation that felt called to this important ministry. The search committee met, interviewed, discussed and prayed about the choice of a Youth Ministry Director. We then shared our information and recommendation with the Church Council on May 14, 2012. At which time they gave their unanimous approval. Many of you may know Karen, as she has been attending St. Paul’s for over a year with her family. They have recently become members of St. Paul’s. Karen has been involved with the youth here at St. Paul’s during this time. She has also been involved with the Wyldlife Program at the Washington Middle School. The Wyldlife Program introduces adolescents to Jesus Christ and helps them grow in their faith. As a youth director, Karen hopes, and her goal is to lead the youth to Christ and help them continue their faith journey into adulthood and beyond. Karen began preparing, organizing and finalizing summer activities for the youth at St. Paul’s the week of May 14th. Her responsibilities will include all activities for grades 7-12, except Sunday School and Confirmation. As Karen commits to this very important responsibility of working with our young people, we ask for your prayers, encouragement and support that with God’s help we will meet the spiritual needs of our youth.

Coal Miners & St. Paul’s By Pastor George

In John Maxwell’s book, The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork, he writes that during World War II when Britain was experiencing its darkest days, the country had a difficult time keeping men working in the coal mines. Many wanted to give up their dirty, thankless jobs in the dangerous mines to join the military service, which got much public praise and support. Yet without coal, the military and the people at home would be in trouble. So England’s Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, faced thousands of coal miners one day and passionately told them of their importance to the war effort. And they returned to their inglorious work with steely resolve. That's the kind of mindset it takes to be a successful team or organization. In our April 30 celebration of volunteers at St. Paul’s, it became very apparent that we have a great many “coal miners”! June Message Series - Tough Teachings of Jesus

By Pastor George

Occasionally I am asked when I am going to preach on certain bible passages that many would describe as difficult, confusing or just flat-out tough. Well, this June we are going to tackle four of those passages - scriptural texts that also happen to be hot topics in our culture right now.

The Constitution and By-Laws of St. Paul’s Church sets forth how to begin wrestling with such topics. In Article IV Faith and Covenant, we read:

1. FAITH — This church acknowledges as its sole Head, Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of man. It acknowledges as brothers in Christ all who share in this confession. It looks to the Word of God in the Scriptures, and to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, to prosper its creative and redemptive work in the world. It claims as its own the faith of the historic Church expressed in the ancient creeds and reclaimed in the basic insights of the Protestant Reformers. It affirms the responsibility of the Church in each generation to make this faith its own. In accordance with the teaching of our Lord and the practice prevailing among evangelical Christians, it recognizes two Sacraments; Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion.

So as we look at some of the Tough Teachings of Jesus, we will look at how scripture and the historic church shape our response to questions such as: “Is Jesus really the only way to heaven?”, “What does Jesus mean when He says ‘I came to bring division’?”, “Jesus teaches that I am to confront others when they sin but He also says ‘do not judge’, which is it?” and “How do I discuss Jesus’ words about divorce with my friends and family who have been touched by it?”

Here is the plan for “wrestling” with these tough teachings during worship in June:

3rd - Tough Teachings of Jesus - He Wants You!

Scripture: John 14:1-6

10th - Tough Teachings of Jesus - We don’t want to hear the truth! Scripture: Luke 12:48-53

17th - Tough Teachings of Jesus - When & How to Judge Others

Scripture: Matthew 7:1-5 & Matthew 18:15-17

24th- Tough Teachings of Jesus- Saying 'I Do' Scripture: Mark 10:1-12

Ready to Go! By Karen Nye

Let me start by saying how excited I am to be a

part of our growing youth ministry here at St. Paul’s.

Seeing and Feeling the Holy Spirit moving here at St.

Paul’s is what drew our family to this church. For the Lord

to allow me to be a part of the leadership team by serving

Him through our youth just humbles me.

God's will for our youth here at St. Paul’s will be my

priority. To understand His will takes prayer,

comprehension, connecting to His word, and being

surrounded by a membership that seeks and knows His

truth and taking the time to be quiet and listen. I ask each

of you to pray specifically for these things as I begin my

journey with you as the Youth Ministry Director.

My mission will be to encourage and establish

relationships with our youth through small group bible

studies, service opportunities, camps and other special

events that will keep our youth active and growing in

Christ. We don't want their journeys to end after

confirmation. Their journeys have just begun.

My goal this year is Growth. Not merely growth in

numbers, but growth in Christ. Having a stronger faith, a

stronger understanding of scripture, and most of all, a

stronger relationship with our Lord.

I am looking for a few volunteers for some special

projects. If you are gifted in the area of - Taking pictures

at Youth Events, memorizing scripture, and or keeping a

journal... Please email me at: [email protected].

JUNE EXTRA-STEP GIVING St. Paul’s Youth Ministry Missions are the focus for our June Extra Steps. This summer three mission-service type trips are planned. June - serving with Group Ministry in St. Louis to address physical and spiritual needs of urban residents. July - a weeklong trip serving at Emmaus in Marthasville. August- serving with other congregational members at Shannondale Church and Community Center in Salem, MO (end of the season repairs in prepartion for winter events and the 2013 Camp season). Extra Step Donations will go fully toward the needed mission supplies for each trip. Your gifts help to deepen our youth's relationship with one another and with God, encourage those who are served, and along the way strengthening the church. You can designate your offering at any time by making a check out to "St. Paul's" & writing "Youth Missions" in the memo line.

Summer Local Mission Trip to Emmaus Homes for Youth & Adults

If you are looking to make a difference close to home and have fun while serving with others this summer, consider an Emmaus Mission Camp. Mission campers spend time in activities with Emmaus residents, as well as help staff with projects around the homes and administrative offices. You will not only have fun with other mission trip "campers", but will learn more about people with developmental disabilities in the process. A date is being finalized. Check the lobby table and bulletin for specific information.

Teen Summer Workcamp Week of Hope in St Louis, June 17-22

Who knew that in 1804, when Lewis and Clark set out from St. Louis to explore the American West and bring hope of a new beginning to the people of the area, that today this area would be in need of hope again? You can serve the people of St. Louis by exploring your faith and bringing hope of another new beginning. You have the chance to brighten people's futures and explore a variety of community service projects for those who really need you. Communicate interest to PG. For complete details, visit www.groupworkcamps.com/register/camp-details?CampCode=12MO11. (NOTE: with gas prices predicted to soar, we are staying close to home for this summer’s mission trip to better utilize Youth Ministry Funds. This Week of Hope will include a total of 99 youth from around the country coming to St. Louis to serve God and His people alongside you and others. Be sure to register and get your $50 deposit in early as four other “weeks of hope” have already filled up for the summer and if we need extra spaces we will need to request them ASAP. Twelve spaces have already been guaranteed!)
