Although rained out on Saturday, the Max Cure Carnival “roared” back on Sunday when over 1000 attendees enjoyed a magical afternoon filled with tons of children’s activities, incredible gourmet food, entertainers from the Big Apple Circus, a hot DJ, fabulous auction items and gift bags provided by TOWN. Mets Hall of Famer John Franco and his wife Rose and family arrived with an entourage of little girls to celebrate their daughter Ella’s birthday. Also in attendance were Edie Falco and her children and former New York Knick, Trent Tucker. Event Chairpersons were Robin Katz Boyarski, Alison Brettschneider, Lisa Daniel, Amy Kass, Bonnie Ponte, Ramy Sharp, Lyss Stern, Gail Tobias and Samantha Yanks. The event was inspired by a brave boy named Max. The Max Cure Foundation is a public charity dedicated to advancing cures for pediatric cancers, funding the development of less toxic treatments for children with the disease and assisting low-income families battling cancer in their children.

The Feminist Press, an independent nonprofit literary publisher, hosted a Southampton Party on Sunday at the home of Elaine Walsh and Brenda McGowan. There were readings by MC B. Smith, Florence Howe, Merle Hoffman, Isabel Sepulveda, and Blanche Wiesen Cook.

Those of us who struggled to comprehend the study of science appreciate Dava Sobel’s unique gift – she brings science to life. Her latest book, A More Perfect Heaven: How Copernicus Revolutionized the Cosmos is a perfect example.

Copernicus has always fascinated and inspired those who wonder about the universe. He is a perfect subject for Sobel, whose writing

Dava Sobel On Copernicustalent and scholarship have turned the history of developing science into fascinating best sellers; Galileo’s Daughter, Longitude, and The Planets.

Sobel was reared in the Bronx and graduated from the prestigious Bronx School Of Science. “Many more people wrote to say they’d enjoyed reading the book, and quite a few asked questions that the story had raised in their minds,” she said of her most recent book.

On Saturday at the Amagansett Library Sobel will discuss Copernicus, a s tor y f i l led wi th in t r igue, personalities and coincidence that brings to life the fascinating, often perilous way, truth eventually survives ignorance. Reservations are suggested, as space is limited.

Sobe l rece ived the 2001

Individual Public Service Award from the National Science Board, “for fostering awareness of science and technology among broad segments of the general public.” Also in 2001, the Boston Museum of Science gave her its prestigious Bradford Washburn Award for her “outstanding contribution toward public understanding of science, appreciation of its fascination, and the vital role it plays in all our lives.” In 2008 the Astronomical Society of the Pacific gave her its Klumpke-Roberts Award for “increasing the public understanding and appreciation of astronomy.”

This event is free and open to the public. For more information: 631-267-3810. The event, which begins at 6 PM, is part of the library’s “Authors After Hours Series.”

Wiig made her movie debut in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up in 2007. In 2011 she hit the silver screen with a bang as the star of Bridesmaids, which she co-wrote. The screenplay earned her a Golden Globe nomination and an Oscar nomination.

The film, produced by Apatow, grossed $288 million and made her a star. She was also nominated for an Emmy for her work on “Saturday Night Live” in 2009.

Wiig bid a tearful adieu to “Saturday Night Life” last May on a show hosted by Mick Jagger, who dedicated his performance of “Goodbye Ruby Tuesday” to her. SNL alumni Amy Poehler, Chris Kattan, Chris Parnell, Will Forte and Rachel Dratch, as well as Steve Martin, were all on hand.

Wiig, who is divorced, is dating Fabrizio Moretti, the drummer for The Strokes. Her next film, scheduled for release later this year, is Imogene.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Leave your partner alone already! Your overly focused attention on your relationship could have you picking fights and poking an old wound just to stir things up. Go do something else. Use your body and work off your tension in the gym or the swimming pool. For you single Aries,’ use this energy to find the partner of your dreams. Your intuition can be very helpful.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) This is a time for you to make substantial changes in life, if you will only allow yourself to be open to the possibilities. Change is good is the mantra, so get on board. If you work with this energy you can put things you really want in place. If you try to resist, you will be dragged into the new anyway. Participate.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Find a Taurus and help them get on board with change. You have a natural affinity for change and that is the energy that is happening right now. As long as your arms and mind are open, you can end up with far more than you ever imagine. Inspire us all with your willingness to change!

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Your feelings and your thoughts are all mashed up this week, so do your best to speak from your heart. Most often for you, your feelings must lead, so don’t abandon them now just because things are a little confusing. Take a few moments alone if you are overwhelmed by this potential for too much energy. Alone time always helps you process things, so use it to your advantage.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) This is actually a very powerful week; you will come across to other people as powerful and in charge. You may not see things that way, but that is how others will be seeing it. Your vision is a bit foggy this week, so feel your way through things. Your intuition is high although your view of reality may not be clear. Use your intuition and believe what others are telling you about yourself.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Now is the time – take action. If you have been waiting for the just right moment, this week should provide it. Look for your opening in difficult conversations. The stars are aligned this week for you to get what you want and negotiate a fair and beneficial deal. Go for it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) What are you going to do? Saturn isn’t in your sign much longer, so this energy of not feeling free to have too much fun will soon be over. In the meantime do take care of the details of your life, the foundational and essential things. Energy dedicated to essentials brings great benefit; just do your best to remember your sense of humor.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Matters of the heart are a little weird and potentially surprising. It will be okay. You are still in the position of power and things will work themselves out. Your job will be to sort through what is real and what is imagined. In a way there is too much energy, so making sure you have all the facts straight is essential.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) This is a week where you will either tell great stories or have experiences that will become great stories later on. Either way it is just your cup of tea. You may meet interesting people and have interesting conversations, or you may find yourself in unusual situations. However this energy manifests, enjoy yourself. It’s all good.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Still a very energized time for you, Capricorn. I hope you are getting a lot of your long standing projects close to completion. This is the time; it comes around every couple of years when you can make big strides in checking things off your list. Do your best to not take on too many more projects, finish up some old ones first.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) This is a great week to talk about the things you feel passionate about. Your energy is very big, however, so do pay attention to how you are being received by others. Some people may feel overwhelmed by your strong emotions. Just be clear and know that you are having a powerful affect on others.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Like Capricorn, this is a great time to be working to check things off of your ‘to do’ list. The energy is excellent for organizing and building and generally getting things done. Make a list of all you want to do and then when you are moved to tackle something, jump on that energy. Resist the urge to sit on the couch until the feeling passes.

NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.

Coming Soon

Sleepwalk With Me (NR) The comedian Mike Birbiglia employs a documentary technique to tell his first person tale of a struggling comedian trying to make it to the big time. He made most of the stuff up but no matter, it’s a hilarious tale indeed. Don’t miss it.

New To Theaters

The Expendables 2 (R ) It’s hard to believe they made another one, but they did. This time around, as in their first effort, Sly Stallone and his Over The Hill Gang of mercenaries ham it up while the bodies stack up. Stallone penned the suitably unbelievable script, and Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarznegger (See our interview in this issue) et al pick up an easy paycheck while perpetrating the myth that they are still tough guys.

New On DVD

The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins’ wildly successful novel, directed by Gary Ross (Big, Dave) is the top grossing film of the year. Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) gets the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen and she’s sensational. Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, and Woody Harrelson co-star. Yes, that’s rocker turned actor Lenny Kravitz you see on the screen. It’s a muted version of the novel, but nevertheless a must-see. Note: fans of the book were mildly disappointed.

Now Playing Cosmopolis (R ) The director

David Cronenberg (The Fly, The Dead Zone) brings us this complex, troubling Sci Fi flick starring the white-hot Robert Pattinson, who is brilliant as financial wizard whose world suddenly crumbles. Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti lead a sterling cast. This is a well-thought out fantasy/thriller and well worth seeing.

Hope Springs (Pg-13) Two old pros, Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, are at the top of their games in this dramedy from the director David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada). Kay (Streep) convinces her skeptical husband Arnold (Jones) to visit a couples specialist (Steve

Carrell) in the hope of invigorating their marriage. It’s a fun romp – and touching – and Oscar likely beckons for both stars.

The Bourne Legacy (PG-13) The hugely popular franchise – the films have grossed a billion dollars worldwide – carries on with a new Bourne, Jeremy (The Hurt Locker) Renner. It’s even slicker than the others, and features a cast to die for – Rachel Weisz, Albert Finney, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach, and the wonderful Joan Allen. Bourne lives on.

Celeste And Jesse Forever (R ) Celeste and Jesse are high school sweethearts who get married. But by age 30 Celeste is an upcoming executive and Jesse an unemployed underachiever. Celeste decides a divorce is the only way to save their long-term friendship. In lesser hands this movie might have flopped, but Rashida Jones (I Love You Man, The Social Network) has penned a sassy, multilayered script and Andy Samberg (“Saturday Night Life”) is perfectly cast as Jesse. Jones, the Harvard-educated daughter of music producer Quincy Jones and the actress Peggy Lipton, has herself a hit.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (PG-13) Greg Heffley, the hero of the book series, comes to the big screen as played by Zachary Gordon (National Treasure: Book Of Secrets). David Bowers (Star Wars Episode III) directs. If you are 13, this is a must see movie.

Klown (NR) This insane film follows three crazy people – two men and a 12 year-old, through a series of escapades too outlandish to even mention here. There is a slapstick element to the film we couldn’t quite get into, but it is undeniably funny and strangely sentimental. It’s worth the price of admission and then some.

This week we decided on dinner at Tutto Il Giorno on Southampton. The restaurant is a Hamptons favorite. It's perfect if you are looking for fine Italian cuisine and for possible celebrity sightings at either the Sag Harbor or Southampton location. The setting is one of the most romantic in the Hamptons but also great place to go with family or friends to share great food and some laughs.

As we entered, we received a warm welcome as we took our seat on the outdoor patio. To start, a spicy watermelon gazpacho. Next on the menu to try was the homemade spinach ricotta ravioli with sage and brown butter. It was spectacular.

Tutto Il Giorno

Main CourseBy Jessica Mackin

For my entree I decided on the sea bass served with a summer corn succotash which was perfect for a summer night. You can’t go wrong with the pasta menu as everything is fresh and homemade.

Fo r de s se r t , a beau t i f u l vanilla panna cotta with fresh berries, made to perfection.

Grab someone you love, a glass of vino, and dine under the outdoor lights. You will have a fantastic evening.

MONTH OF AUGUST

Ingredients (serves 4)1 package of pita rounds

4 duck thighs1/3 c kosher salt

1/4 c granulated sugarzest of 1 orangehand full of thyme

1/2 gallon canola oil1 large white onion3 heads of garlic

1/4 c chives chopped3 tbsp honey

1 tbsp truffle oilsalt and pepper to taste

MethodThis recipe requires you to quick

cure the duck. This will need to be done a day in advance. Begin by mixing the salt, sugar, thyme, and orange zest. Rub the duck with the mixture and set it in the refrigerator

Pita Toast With Roasted Garlic And Caramelized Onion Jam,

Duck Confit, And Truffled Honeyovernight. When you are ready to confit the duck, set your oven to 275 degrees and heat the canola oil over low heat on the stove in a three to four inch deep oven friendly frying pan. Rinse the excess rub off the duck thighs. Pat them dry and place them in the warm oil with a few sprigs of thyme and an orange peel. Allow them to cook in the oven at 275 degrees for about four and half hours.

While the duck is cooking, wrap the heads of garlic in tin foil and drizzle each with a bit of oil. Roast in the oven next to the duck for about an hour.

Slice the white onion thin and caramelize them over medium high heat in a large sauté pan. When the garlic is done remove it from the oven and squeeze the roasted garlic

from the skins. Place the caramelized onions and roasted garlic together in a food processor and pulse a few times until incorporated.

When it has cooled in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, mix the chives into the resulting jam. When the duck is ready and falling off the bone carefully remove the thighs from the oil and set them aside to cool. When they are cool enough to handle, assemble the dish. Start by spreading a generous portion of onion jam over each pita round.

Pick the duck meat with your fingers and place around the center of each pita. Bake the pitas at 400 degrees for seven minutes. Mix

together the honey and truffle oil with a spoon and drizzle over each pita as it comes out of the oven. Enjoy!

Mary’s MarvelousMary’s Marvelous, a grab-and-

go shop with a local and seasonal focus, opens its second store in East Hampton with a preview party on August 31 from 4 to 7 PM. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be served including mini sandwiches and sample smoothies as well as bite sized baked goods.

Mary Schoenlein, owner and executive chef, has run Mary’s Marvelous in Amagansett since July 2002 and began to consider the idea of opening another location almost four years ago. In March of 2012, a venue in the village of East Hampton became available. “I believed this would be the best opportunity for me

at this time to grow my business and be more readily available to a larger audience,” remarked Schoenlein.

The new space has a clean, white appearance, similar to that of the Amagansett location, but with a more modern feel. A two-minute walk from the East Hampton train station and a seven-minute walk from Main Street, Mary’s Marvelous will be a convenient place for a quick lunch or tasty treat. Walk into the right side of this building to pick up pre-packaged food to go or order from an array of menu options, while within the left-side doorway retail goods may be found.
