A few months ago a lady stopped by to find out in which cemetery her ancestor was buried. Not being here at the time, I was contacted and asked the visitor to leave her contact information and what she needed. Well she didn’t leave it here, but left it elsewhere and I just now found it. She was looking for a cemetery but didn’t know which one. Now that I have the information I will get right on this for her. However because of this, I realized that many of you are not fully aware of our website located at http://www.tngenweb. org/haywood/ and how it works. You also may not use computers as much as we do. On our website we have a wonderful Haywood County Cemetery listing. This of course assumes you know the cemetery you need. One of our Genies is in charge of updating and confirming the information in the listings from obituaries, death certificates and burial records. This database is constantly being updated. One thing we don’t have on the website yet is the ability to search for a particular name to find out the cemetery you need. We’re working on that, so in the mean time, if you are at a total loss for where your ancestor may be buried, please email one of us. Our Genie is creating a searchable index and has one at his disposal. We can make sure he gets the information and he will gladly check for you. Please keep in mind that even if your ancestor has no grave marker, this doesn’t mean we can’t tell you which cemetery the ancestor should be in. Burial records are great for that! Actually finding that unmarked grave in the cemetery can be a bit problematic. Cemetery records do not exist for all cemeteries the way a sexton used to keep them. So finding an unmarked grave is possible if you are lucky enough to find a cemetery with these records. Marked or not, they will show the location on a map or grid. But if the map or grid doesn’t exist, and many times they do not, we won’t be able to help you with that. Finding someone who actually knows the location will be your best bet for that. The Genies are in bad need of assistance. Health issues have slowed us down in some of our research and we could use some volunteers to help us out. If you are interested in helping, please contact us at one of the emails below and let us know.
