The Cefalà Diana Baths and Chiarastella
Special Nature Reserve was founded in
1997 to protect an area of 137 hectares
between the communes of Cefalà Diana
and Villafrati. It is managed by the
Regional Province of Palermo.
The reserve lies in rough grassland from
which there soars up Chiarastella, a lime-
stone carbonate mountain at whose base
there are the Cefalà Diana Baths, i.e. the
Arab thermal baths dating from the late
Middle Ages. The reserve was created
above all to protect the particular under-
ground hydro-geological universe that for
many centuries has been fed by springs
that come up to the surface down in the
valley at a temperature that reaches 37°
Celsius.
The phenomenon appears today to be
changing and evolving, though continuing
to be fed by the rainwater that collects
near the basin of Pizzo Chiarastella and
Cozzo Cavallo, the point from which the
water continues to go underground. Along
the road that leads to the thermal baths
you can appreciate the peculiarities of the
dolomitic flint-bearing limestones, whose
rocks present dark grey hues with black
flint striations. The Costa d’Ape hill and the
southeast side of Pizzo Chiarastella are
enlivened by the presence of some inter-
esting caves.
The paths
With a few minutes’ drive from Cefalà
Diana you can visit, inside a sixteenth-cen-
tury farm, the thermal establishment that
in antiquity was set up and equipped for
giving healthcare and relief.

nera. Il Colle di Costa d’Ape e il fianco di
Sud-Est del Pizzo Chiarastella sono movi-
mentati dalla presenza di alcune interes-
santi grotte.
I sentieri
cure e sollievo.

An architectonic detail of the castle at Cefalà Diana
lodesma mauritanica) e asfodelo (Aspho-
delus albus); si incontrano anche la scilla
(Scilla marittima), una liliacea dai fiori a lun-
ghi grappoli, e l’asfodelina (Asphodelina lu-
boncino mediterraneo (Cymbopogon hirtus)
e la ginestra spinosa (Calicotome villosa L.).
Il territorio riveste evidenti caratteristiche di
congenialità al ciclo biologico delle orchi-
dee, presenti in consistente numero: vi fiori-
scono, fra le altre, la serapide maggiore
(Serapias vomeracea) e l’ofride gialla
(Ophrys lutea).
Sulla fiancata Est del Pizzo Chiarastella vivo-
no lecci, euforbie (Euphorbia dendroides),
asparagi spinosi (Asparagus acutifolis L.) e il
trifoglio bituminoso (Psoralea bituminosa
L.) dal caratteristico olezzo di petrolio.
From here you get to the path that leads up a
soft slope to Pizzo Chirastella and its unbeliev-
able panorama.
The flora
Pizzo Chiarastella is surrounded by a vast
meadow covered with Mauritania vineweed
(Amphelodesma mauritanica) and asphodel
(Asphodelus albus); we also meet sea squill
(Scilla maritima), a liliaceous plant with flow-
ers in long clusters, and asphodeline
(Asphodelina lutea) with big yellow flowers,
together with Mediterranean thatching grass
(Cymbopogon hirtus) and thorny broom
(Calicotome villosa L.).
The territory has evident characteristics mak-
ing it favourable to the biological cycle of
orchids, which are present in big numbers:
among others there is tongue orchid (Serapias
vomeracea) and yellow ophrys (Ophrys lutea).
On the east side of Pizzo Chiarastella there are
ilexes, euphorbias (Euphorbia dendroides),
thorny asparagus (Asparagus acutifolis L.) and
pitch trefoil (Psoralea bituminosa L.) with a
peculiar smell like petroleum.

no. L’avifauna, ad esempio, conta esemplari
di cappellaccia (Galeria cristata), passera
sarda (Passer hispaniolensis), strillozzo
(Miliaria calandra), saltimpalo (Saxicola
torquata) e zigolo nero (Emberiza cirlus).
Ospiti esclusivi della stagione fredda sono
la pispola (Anthus pratensis) e la ballerina
bianca (Motacilla alba). Sul terreno si
incontrano il biacco (Coluber viridiflavus) e
la biscia d’acqua (Natrix natrix). Fra i mam-
miferi, conigli (Oryctolagus cuniculus) e
piccoli roditori impegnati a sfuggire alle
battute di caccia di volpi (Vulpes vulpes) e
donnole (Mustela nivalis).
The fauna
The fauna in the Reserve is analogous to that
present to a great extent in the Sicilian territo-
ry.The avifauna, for instance, includes exem-
plars of crested lark (Galeria cristata), Spanish
sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis), corn bunting
(Miliaria calandra), stonechat (Saxicola torqua-
ta) and black bunting (Emberiza cirlus).
Exclusive guests of the cold season are the
meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) and the
white ballerina (Motacilla alba). On the ground
we meet the coluber (Coluber viridiflavus) and
the water snake (Natrix natrix). Among the
mammals, there is the rabbit (Oryctolagus
cuniculus) and small rodents busy running
away from hunting by the fox (Vulpes vulpes)
and the weasel (Mustela nivalis).
