This issue of The Masthead is dedicated to pictures! The Commodore’s Ball and Desert Land Cruise are included and hopefully they capture the energy, festivities and friendship shared by the people who attended. Many members contributed to organizing each event and my thanks to all of you for your time and efforts.

In April, due to the current coronavirus situation, the boat christening could be postponed, and the format for the amazing Easter Brunch could possibly change.

The coronavirus has changed how we currently go about our lives. Difficult decisions will have to be made, and as you have seen, changes are already in place at BCYC with how we use the club. The bottom line will be: what is best for the people involved.

In the meantime, enjoy this “album” of memories created by all of you!

In February, I competed in the Golden Bear Regatta in the San Francisco Bay area, which was officially my final high school competition. At last, it was on Treasure Island where I bid adieu to my high school sailing career.

While my high school team saw its fair share of ups and downs these past four years (with four coach swaps, three different yacht clubs, and a bunch of newbie sailors each year), I truly enjoyed every minute I spent on the Sage Hill Sailing Team. As captain, I got to assume a leadership and mentor role for the underclassman, and as a teammate, I met many lifelong friends. Now, looking back, I want to take the time to thank not only my high school and my fellow sailors on the team, but also BCYC for my background in sailing, without which I couldn’t have thrived as a high school sailor.

Our annual Easter Champagne Brunch is scheduled to happen on Sunday, April 12, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The day is typically filled with family-fun activities for all to enjoy, including Easter egg hunts outside for the children and champagne for the adults! The BCYC Easter Bunny hops around the club to take pictures with your family. The format for this very popular event could change based on whether BCYC is fully operational. Any changes will be communicated to members electronically, including on the website. The Lounge Nights scheduled for April 3 and 25 have been postponed. As soon as new dates have been set, we will communicate to you via the Weekly Update, email blasts, and on the club website. If you are interested in becoming part of the Activities Committee, please join us on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m.

Getting to Know You

One of the greatest benefits of being a BCYC member is getting to know other new and seasoned members. This is best accomplished by joining a committee or attending an event, getting involved as soon as you can. Not only will you make new friends, but you will also become more familiar with the inner workings of BCYC. So, don’t delay – join something new today.

Our first new member party of the year was Feb. 9, and it was a great success. Many current committee members were present and presented their activities to those new members who attended. A fun and educational time was had by all, along with the cocktails and appetizers served.

We will have more new member events in the near future, so stay tuned to The Masthead and the electronic message board near the Columbia Room for future details. If you have any ideas, suggestions or would like to join the Membership Committee, please feel free to contact me at any time.

We just held our first fishing tournament of the year with a pretty good turnout. Nine anglers fought the harsh weather of the day and went out in search of the largest bass.

One boat traveled all the way to San Clemente Island and caught about 40 fish. They ranged in size from three to 12 pounds. The only problem was none of them were the right species for the fishing tournament and not a single legal bass was caught at the island.

Another boat went up and down the local coast all day long. They fought rain and bad weather, but they did not fight many fish! It just goes to show it’s not the quantity but the quality that matters sometimes.

The winning fish was caught by Wayne Kircher aboard Reel Success, BCYC member Bob Kircher’s boat. He took home the cash prize with his monster catch of 2.2 pounds! It was the only bass caught this day by any of our anglers.

Numerous members who didn’t fish gathered around at weigh-in to see the action. Everybody enjoyed food and drinks and had a great time. I think Wayne spent his entire winnings that day on bait and gas, but claimed he had a blast doing it! He also earned 10 points for his first-place finish towards the Angler of The Year crown. All the other participants received a total of four points each toward the year’s points total. Remember, if you participate in three of the four tournaments, you qualify for a shot at Angler of The Year honors.

Please join us for our second tournament, The Newport Harbor In-Shore Tournament, that will be held May 2 and 3. Everybody is invited to join in for this multiple-species tournament. Rules and details will follow soon. For any questions, contact Garrison Williams at [email protected]. Tight lines and good fishing!

Sea Bass Tournament a Success!

Opening Day Marina ReservationsBCYC members can begin reserving a spot for their boats in the marina on April 1 (subject to change) for Opening Day. You need to come to the club and meet with Debbie Dunne, waterfront manager, to complete and sign an Opening Day marina agreement document. If you have any questions, contact Debbie by email or phone ([email protected] or 949-644-9530 ext. 22).

•••••••••••Be Safe and Win! •••••••••••BCYC Opening Day, May 9. Now is the time to start reviewing the vessel safety checklist in anticipation of the annual Boat Maintenance Competition and Inspection. It’s easy to do and you will have the satisfaction of a Bristol and safe boat with a trophy or decal to prove it!

The competition is based on the Bristol condition of the boats entered and is conducted by the Balboa Power Squadron. There are two classes for point evaluation. Class 1 involves items required by Coast Guard regulations, while Class 2 items are necessary for the prudent operation of the vessel. Points are awarded based on the following criteria:

Absent, not functioning or not easily accessible – 0 Functioning, but in poor condition – 1Functioning, but in fair condition – 2 Functioning, and appears to be new – 3

The inspectors look for things like personal flotation devices, navigation light operation, displaying the required CF number on your dinghy and overall condition of the vessel. Sound easy? It is! There are many available competition categories and separate trophies. Please contact Debbie Dunne, waterfront manager, for more details and entry forms.

Welcome, Spring

Vice CommodoreSandy [email protected]

Vice CommodoreRhonda Tolar

[email protected]

Spring is here, and soon the warm weather, which signals many enjoyable spring and summer events to come.

We had our first meeting in preparation for Opening Day. A big thanks to the 2020 dock party teams who have signed up. The work contributed by past dock team members brought such excitement to our Opening Day dock parties. All members are welcome to join a dock team – each team selects food, special drinks and great decorations to bring in our opening season of boating and summer events. The theme is Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville. Please contact me if you would like to be on a dock team.

Taco Tuesday racing begins May 12. This summer, with the help of Sail Fleet Captain Paul DeCapua, Waterfront Manager Debbie Dunne, DRM PJ Jaqulien and Junior Sailing Committee chair Joel Stone, we are putting together a program for our Club J22 sailboat to race in each race. Every week, we will be encouraging members who want to experience racing to go out with PJ and one other experienced crew. Afterwards, you can enjoy the super buffet and after-race party. No experience needed, so if you are interested, see Debbie to book a date to race.

A change coming this summer will be a new twist to Friday Burger Bash on the lower level patio. Friday Family Fun nights will begin June 26, and run for six consecutive Fridays. With the help of Rebecca Corbin and Lori Curtin, Junior Events Committee chairs, Junior Board Advisor Mark Groenhuyzen, General Manager Scott Jones, Joel Stone, Junior Sailing Committee chair, and me, each of these Friday nights will have a different theme. There will cool décor along with special activities or games. Instead of the traditional barbecue, there will be different foods to match the theme, as well as mouth-watering desserts. The themes are: in-the-pool game night, paddle board competition, Hawaii night, Mexican fiesta, water balloon game night with movies at the pool, and the final night will feature a DJ, games and build-your-own ice cream sundae station. Look for the event promos and make plans to join the fun, AND we would welcome you being part of the FFF team. Contact me via email ([email protected]) with questions or to become a team member, helping to make these summer nights very entertaining.

A Note from our Chaplain . . .“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”

Restoration and New

The House Committee has begun restoring the Compass Rose (near the flag pole). It is hard to believe that is has been more than 11 years since this area was upgraded with new concrete and the installation of the Compass Rose. Stay tuned for the changes to this area.

Just in time for the Commodore’s Ball, the new mahogany door for the men’s restroom on the upper floor was installed – what a difference! We are considering auctioning off this relic. The other rooms on this level will be getting new, nautical-looking doors in the coming weeks.

Many good ideas have been put forward to recognize the history of BCYC and those who made significant contributions to that history. We are working on the details at our committee meetings.

We are looking for nautical paintings that members would like to donate (or lend) to the club. It would be helpful to provide a picture of the painting to me so the House Committee can consider where it might fit. As always, special thanks to the many members who take time to participate in our meetings, providing energy and insight, helping to make BCYC the nicest facility in the harbor.

Come Cruising With Us

CruisingRolf Rolnicki [email protected]

Ronda [email protected]

The first cruise of 2020, the Desert Land Cruise, was a smashing success! We had a large crowd as usual and everything was great, including the weather. We began our weekend on the putting greens of the Desert Horizon Country Club. Thanks to Heidi and Kelley York for allowing us to enjoy their beautiful facility. Congratulations to Carl Jones for placing first in the men’s division and Catherine Miller for placing first in the women’s division. Both had the same score!

After the putting contest, we headed to Staff Commodore Chuck Wert’s home for libations and appetizers. We all had a great time and luckily, no one fell in the pool. Thank you to Chuck and Lynn for hosting this fun event. And, Debby and Fraser Fisher and Lauri and Junior Staff Commodore Steve Moffett were amazing, helping plan, transport, set up and prepare for the party. Afterwards, many headed back to the hospitality room for a fun after-party complete with some creative putting practice. Thanks to EB Barden for again hosting the room.

Saturday morning, the golfers went to Chaparral Country Club for the golf tournament. I know very little about golf, but I am pretty sure you are supposed to keep your ball far away from glass objects, especially windows. Obviously, Junior Staff Commodore Steve Moffett does not know about this rule. Next time you see him, ask how he won the wildest shot award for golf. Big thanks to Leila Lewis and Staff Commodore Don Willet for arranging this tourney. Also, Scott McKinlay and Judge Advocate Tracy Tormey hooked us up with our host, Jeff Christianson. Even though Jeff is not a BCYC member, he was kind enough to host our club at the country club. Congratulations to our golf champions: Jeff Christianson, Treasurer Gary Granbery, Kim Phipps and Staff Commodore Don Willet. Also, Jong Davis and Darlena Monet won the closest to the pin award (they were the only ones who measured). After golf, many headed back to the Omni Rancho Las Palmas for an afternoon of relaxing and socializing at the pool and cruising the lazy river. That evening, we headed back to Chaparral Country Club for an outdoor cocktail hour and yummy buffet dinner.

Our next scheduled cruise, Viva Las Vegas, has been postponed. We will keep you updated as the schedule is updated.

Our cruise to Dana Point, May 29-31, is currently available for sign-up. This will be a raft-up style cruise, but if rafting up is not your bag, you can obtain a guest slip by going to dockwa.com. Make sure you indicate that you are with the BCYC group so that they can attempt to get us all together. We will start off the cruise with a happy hour at Dana West Yacht Club on Friday. Saturday evening, Rear Commodore Kari and Staff Commodore Paul Konapelsky have been kind enough to open their home to us for a lovely dinner. Don’t have a boat? No problem, just drive down and join the festivities. We have a lot of cruising opportunities for landlubbers and seaworthy members – come cruising with us. There is a cruise with your name on it, so sign up today!

The flowers, fabulous hats and gloves, the couture and beautiful guitar music – what a day for the Las Commodoras Tea Party luncheon – and the day will happen later in the year as the event was postponed. It is always fun to dress to the nines and pretend to be a royal once, of course without the duties. Thank you to Joyce Barnes and Teri Leigh for chairing this beautiful event, and Catherine Miller for planning the fabulous decorations – their efforts will be appreciated when the event is actually held. Thanks to Tammy Boivin, Marjorie Davis and Chef Georges Rapicault for their contributions. Rear Commodore Kari Konapelsky, your support is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Staff Commodore Ted O’Connor for the beautiful tea set. It is a shining example of a wonderful tradition. April will bring our fur party. The Dog Show will take place April 25 at 9:30 a.m. on the lower patio – this is a NEW date. Many of you have wonderful and beautiful dogs, so bring them for the fun and great prizes. There will be food and drink for the dogs, and their humans. We will have lots of treats and goodies for your pets, generously donated by The Pet Supply in Huntington Beach. They love to support this event. All entry fees go to Patriots and Paws, an organization that supports veterans in Southern California. Please join the fun and you can decide who is more hilarious, the humans or the dogs.

Want a New Boat?

Sail Fleet CaptainPaul [email protected]

In case you missed it, on April 1 (April Fools Day), IKEA announced it will soon (maybe) sell a 30-foot sailboat called the Smerbarj (NO actual sell start date has been divulged!). It can be assembled in a few days with only two Allen wrenches, a screwdriver, and a few tubes of water-proof glue (included). Sails will be sold separately, either Hilja racing sails or Ringblomma cruising sails.

If you’re not handy with tools, you can always find a fully-assembled boat with sails by visiting the Skipper/Crew Forum on our website – or you can join us on Race Committee. Either way, get out on the water for the following races:

•AngelmanSeries– the last raceof the series isMay23.This is easy ocean racing with views of the Newport Beach shore or Catalina, perfect for the not-too-serious racer.

•WeissSeries– the second raceof this series is also thismonth, May 24. The opposite of ocean racing, this venue is windward/leeward racing for Harbor 20s. Does everyone know you can charter our club’s Harbor 20, Ruthless, to participate in races? Ask Debbie Dunne, waterfront manager, for information.

•Taco Tuesdays – Señor Taco has asked me to remindeveryone that Taco Tuesdays start May 12, and run for 16 consecutive Tuesday evenings. Fun races, fun food, fun raffles! Four PHRF classes and three Harbor 20 classes will race on separate courses. Please note that this series start date could change based on the status of the coronavirus situation.

The Food and Beverage Committee meeting in February had great participation from our members. Those in attendance presented many suggestions regarding menu items. General Manager Scott Jones was present to discuss suggestions and took notes on all of the input – so watch the menus for new items. Members spoke very favorably about the services offered at BCYC, including not only the food, but also the kitchen and service staff who work hard to meet our requests. We encourage members to attend our meetings the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. A huge thanks to those of you who attended and contributed some great ideas.

Congratulations BCYC members. Attendance in January and February at Sunday Night Supper exceeded 180 for this marvelous dining event. Thanks to Chef George Rapicault and his culinary team for the wonderful entrées served. February was exceptional with chef’s favorite – French cuisine! In April we will be serving from a new limited menu. In May, the current plan is each Sunday Night Supper will be Bill Long’s “Famous Chowder” dinner with clam chowder, lobster and all the fixings. Enjoy this fabulous taste of New England and remember to MAKE A RESERVATION. In May, another BCYC favorite returns – Taco Tuesday. This is a great opportunity for families to meet prior to the race teams coming in. The Columbia Room bar opens at 4 p.m. and the buffet starts at 5:30 p.m. These events are subject to change based on the club being fully operational. Any changes will be communicated to members electronically, including on the website.

The Food and Beverage and Junior Events Committees are working together to develop a family time at the club. It will be Friday Family Fun Nights. We encourage more families to join in these special dinners. Watch your Weekly Update for more information.

MORE INFORMATION AT BCYC.ORGPlease make reservations for all Club Events, as well as dining plans, at bcyc.org or by calling the club office at 949-644-9530.

Club Event: Regular dining is not available / Columbia Room menu served until 5 p.m. To avoid a cancelation charge, reservations must be canceled three (3) or more Club Open days prior to the Club Event (e.g. no later than the Wednesday before a Saturday Club Event).

The safety of our members and staff is paramount during the coronavirus pandemic. Certain events have been postponed or cancelled. Please watch for current information by carefully reading the Weekly Update and eblasts from the club, as well as visiting the BCYC website. Stay safe, practice healthy habits and help each other through this unique and historic time. Support our staff – order from the take-out menu shown on page two of this issue of The Masthead. Staff Commodore Mary Bacon said: “Great breakfast burrito and Bob and I enjoyed it. I am hopeful other members can take advantage of this take-out service while the club is able to provide it. While I was picking up my order, I saw our staff busy deep cleaning. When all of this is over, you’ll be able to eat off the floors!” Effective immediately, members can purchase wine, ice cold beer and distilled spirits in an unopened container from the club. This complements the food take-out menu. Come support our staff!
