The good, bad & ugly of the telephonic interview

    THE DESIGN

Lots of meetings sans any conclusions.

    A breakthrough on 9-10thAug, 2008 the

BAJA workshop at VIT Auditorium. Slow (but steady) beginning in September.

Process gains momentum after Diwali and

is almost over by December. Design report completed on 31 Dec, 2008.

    PURCHASE & MANUFACTURING

    Begins in December 1st week.

Roll cage manufacturing & shock absorber procurementbegin simultaneously on Dec 16.

Unseen obstacles on both sides sees shock absorberprocurement not going according to specifications, as well asvehicle manufacturing taking much more time than expected.

Things fall to a new low on Jan 7, 2009 as the entire design isquestioned and major modifications suggested.

Vehicle remodeled by Jan 13. Inspection takes place. Furtheradditions and manufacturing goes on till Jan 23 or does it??

    THE EVENT

Jan 28,29: Track width of 68 - as against required widthof 64 - spotted by organizers. Inspection suspended.

Jan 30: Miss the morning bus. Allowed for static &dynamic events. Better than average performances in

design evaluation and marketing presentation boost theteams morale.

Jan 31: A little slower than expected in hill climb &maneuverability. Decent timing in acceleration. Yet endup 28th overall for the grid positions. Rear tires replacedby narrower tires.

Feb 1: Fit into the required 64 width. Compete in theendurance event an amazing experience and wereamong the 10 teams which lasted the event. Finish 8th

    overall.

    LESSONS LEARNT

Team coordination a must to ensure that the focus remainsentirely on the project.

Without any systematic approach, things will never go asexpected.

Planning and a regular review with the guides a must.

Otherwise time flies and the work remains highly unsatisfactory. Every team member must know his role and take his own

    initiative.

Dont depend entirely on external help. This is a studentsproject.

Decisions related to money must not be made withouteveryones consent.

Cherish every moment of the project. You'll miss it later.

    Reviews

Reviews can take place twice a week (once thedesign process has started). On these 2 days, nosame person will exhibit his design procedures.

Everyone should be explained the respectivedesigns. No miscommunications should occurthereafter. Any doubts should be clarified in fronton everyone, especially in front of the guides.

All procurements and money related issuesshould be discussed with everyone beforemaking a decision.
