KICK-START THENEW YEAR

Based in Eatons Hill, Kickfit 4 Kidz is a new and innovative program designed to motivate and excite children into taking a more active and tailored approach to their lives; regarding healthy lifestyle choices in the areas of both mind and body. This is achieved through an exciting and educational kickboxing/games based 1 hour activity session.

With the growing levels of childhood obesity in not only Australia, but the western world in general, steps need to be taken to reverse the slip-ups society is making.

These can include general lifestyle trends in which children are swept into by society at large, Including the prevalence of fast food, the addictive nature of computer games and gaming consoles, preservatives in almost all foods we eat and the lack of proper nutritional and health education available to children.

What Kickfit 4 Kidz intends to do is create greater awareness in children of the fact that they can choose the way they want to live, be it in the forms of exercise, nutrition… or both.

Each week the kids will be taught in the ways of kickboxing and learn vital forms of self defence. They will also be involved in skill based games allowing them to enhance not only their hand-eye co-ordination, ball handling skills, and increased fitness, but team work and sportsmanship

as well. Monthly ‘Fit Fact’ sheets will also be given out to encourage the next generation of our planet to lead healthier lives.

As they progress through the sessions and grow in knowledge, fitness and skill they will be awarded badges of achievement. These include Courage, Truth, Honour, Discipline, Perseverance and Independence.

KickFit for Kidz classes are held on Wednesday and Saturday with new classes being added to the schedule next year. This month KidzFit have a special offer for balanced customers with the first 20 new members to sign up receive their uniforms FREE of charge.

Upper arm size and development is one of the most popular of all muscle groups among bodybuilders and weight lifters of all levels. It is no small wonder that we are constantly looking for that “secret exercise” or a “secret routine” that will increase upper arm size dramatically.

Start off with an exercise like a military press. Press the barbell to arm’s length overhead. Then lower it behind your head to your ears. Press the barbell back to arm’s length overhead and lower it to the front. Think of it as alternating between a front press and a behind the neck press. Inhale as you

are pressing and exhale as you are lowering the weight.

Using the ab roller, start on the floor on all your hands and knees. Hold the ab roller in your hands while in this position. Slowly roll the ab roller forward, stretching your body into a straight position. Go down as far as you can without touching the floor with your body. Pause and pull yourself back to the starting position. Repeat for the desired number of reps. Go slow and do not touch the ground. This exercise is essentially the same movement as a preacher curl, where arms are exercised in front of the body. But the main difference here is that your body is supported; the use of momentum or “cheating” is minimized.

This exercise will really shock the long head of the bicep, as well as the brachialis. You’ll notice it allows for a very complete, full range of motion compared to other curl movements as well. To do this exercise, lie against an incline bench, with your arms hanging down in a horizontal line. Hold onto a barbell, and without moving your arms out of this horizontal plane, curl the weight up as high as you can. Like preacher curls, the bottom of the movement is where most force is placed upon the muscle, so don’t skimp on going down all the way if you want the maximum benefit. For years, business and motivational gurus have known that there are basic habits that seem to predict professional success and excellence. Books like The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Peo-ple, by motivational speaker and busi-ness guru Stephen Covey, which has sold over 15 million copies alone, shows that people are hungry for the secrets of suc-cess.We don’t yet have the perfect formula for long life, happiness, and physical health, but a little careful distillation of the mas-sive amount of research on health and longevity reveals that cultivating eight-basic habits will significantly increase the odds of your living long, well, and happily -- in a robust, healthy, weight-appropriate body. 1. Eat your vegetables. No kid-ding --and I’m talking at least 9 servings a day. Unless you’re following the most stringent first stage of the Atkins Diet, you should be able to consume 60-120 grams of carbs a day (depending on your weight and exercise level), and you’d have to eat a stockyard full of spinach to get to that amount. Every major study of long-lived, healthy people shows that they eat a ton of plant foods. Nothing delivers antioxidants, fiber, flavonoids, indoles, and the entire pharmacopeia of disease fighting phytochemicals like stuff that grows in rich soil.2. Eat fish and/or take fish oil.

The omega-3’s found in cold-water fish like salmon deserve the title of “wellness molecule of the century.” They lower the risk of heart disease, they lower blood pressure, they improve mood, and they’re good for the brain. And if you’re preg-nant, they may make your kid smarter!3. Connect. And I’m not talking about the internet. In virtually every study of people who are healthy and happy into their 9th and 10th decades, social connections are one of the “prime movers” in their life. Whether church, family, volunteer work, or community, finding something you care about that’s bigger than you, that you can connect with and that involves other people (or animals) -- will extend your life, increase your energy, and make you happier -- al-ways.4. Sleep well. If you’re low in en-ergy, gaining weight, grumpy, and look-ing haggard, guess what? Chances are you’re not sleeping long enough or well enough. By sleeping “well,” I mean un-interrupted sleep, in the dark -- without the television on, in a relaxing environ-ment. Nothing nourishes, replenishes, and restarts the system like 7-9 hours sleep. Hint: start by going to bed an hour early. And if you’ve got a computer in the bedroom, banish it!5. Exercise every day. Forget this 20 minutes three times a week stuff. Long-lived people are doing things like farm chores at 4:30 in the morning! Our Paleolithic ancestors traveled an average

of 20 miles per day. Our bodies were de-signed to move on a regular basis. New studies show that merely 30 minutes a day of walking not only reduces the risk of most serious diseases, but can even grow new brain cells!2 6. Practice gratitude. By making a list of things you’re grateful for, you focus the brain on positive energy. Gratitude is incompatible with anger and stress. Practice using your under-utilized “right brain” and spread some love. Focus-ing on what you’re grateful for -- even for five minutes a day -- has the added benefit of being one of the best stress-reduction techniques on the planet. 7. Drink red wine or eat grapes. The resveratrol in dark grapes is being studied for its effect on extending life, which it seems to do for almost every species studied. (So does eating about one third less food, by the way.) If you’ve got a problem with alcohol, you can get resveratrol from grapes, peanuts, or sup-plements. (And if you’re a woman, and you choose the alcohol option, make sure you’re getting folic acid every day.)8. Get the sugar out. The number one enemy of vitality, health, and longev-ity is not fat, it’s sugar. Sugar’s effect on hormones, mood, immunity, weight, and possibly even cancer cells is enormous -- and it’s all negative. To the extent that you can remove it from your diet, you will be adding years to your life and life to your years.

This list may not be perfect and it may

not be complete, but it’s a start. As my dear grandmother used to say, “Couldn’t hurt.” Not one of these “habits” will hurt you, all will benefit you, and some may make the difference between life and death. And it’s never too late to start cultivating them.Enjoy the journey!

The recently launched cricket coaching facility, myCricketCoach.com, is designed to give cricketers of all levels access to first class cricket coaching via the internet.

With advice from former test cricketer and Queensland captain, Gary Cosier, budding cricketers have never had it easier with this new and exciting coaching system.

It works by emailing a video of your training session to mycricketcoach.com, which is then reviewed by Gary, providing written, verbal and drawn instruction. The session is then emailed back to the participant, usually within 48 hours.

“The great part about this type of coaching is that we can give direct correction and instruction at the end of each session,” Gary explained.

Gary can also offer live coaching for those times when participants have access to a video camera and computer at their practice session, which is perfect for coaching groups in schools and organised teams.

“From beginners learning the very basics, to a club cricketer or an advanced player who would like to look at the finer points of their game, this is their chance to learn more and advance their skill levels.”

The first 50 people to join will go into the draw for a Michael Clarke, Vice Captain of Australia autographed Slazenger cricket bat with authentication certificate, drawn just before Christmas.

Lunch IdeasBy Rita Di-Bartolo

Sandwiches are always a popular choice for lunches, especially considering the relative ease they are to create, their ability to travel and capacity for variation.

If you are travelling down to the coast or taking the kids for a picnic in the park remember that meats, dairy products, and eggs are perishable so be sure to use a freezer pack to keep them cold.

Choose whole grain bread, wraps, or pitas. If your child resists whole grain breads, use bread that is made with some whole grain but still has the flavour and texture of white bread. Each sandwich should have a healthy protein source and healthy toppings. Some suggestions:

•Tuna sandwich wrap with light mayonnaise, lettuce and tomatoes

•Egg salad sandwich on whole grain bread

•Peanut butter, cashew, or almond butter with a 100 percent fruit spread on whole grain bread (a healthier Peanut Butter & Jelly)

•Sliced turkey, lean roast beef, or chicken from the deli--or left over from last night’s dinner--with light mayonnaise, mustard, and a slice of cheese

What should you send along with the sandwich? A piece of fresh fruit is healthy but can get a bit boring after a while. Skip the greasy chips and choose from these healthier ideas, just remember to keep perishables cold:

•Send a salad in a small plastic container. Keep the dressing on the side in a separate smaller container.

•Cheese sticks go well with sandwiches and are a good source of calcium.

•Whole grain snack crackers add a nice crunch and lots of healthy fibre.

•Make a fruit salad with grapes, melons chunks, and blueberries.

•Dried fruit, like raisins, dried cranberries or banana chips

•Nuts like almonds, cashews, or walnuts

•Pack a cold pasta salad, coleslaw, or potato salad.

•Baby carrots with a small container of vegetable dip

•Crunchy raw green beans with a small container of ranch or French onion dip

•Pre-packaged, flavoured low-fat yogurt

Going Beyond the Sandwich

With insulated food jars, you can pack that hot food as well, so think leftovers from that delicious (healthy) meal you made last night, making sure the foods are heated up to at least 140 degrees before you load them into the insulated jars.

Here are some hot food ideas:

•Beef and vegetable stew with a hard roll

•Chicken noodle soup and whole grain crackers

•Lasagne with a salad and bread •Chicken casserole with carrots and

vegetable dip•Chilli with whole grain crackers or

bread •Left over stir-fry or sautéed

vegetablesWith the right lunch gear, your

child can enjoy a delicious and healthy lunch every day. Add a small cookie or tiny piece of candy for dessert along with juice, milk, or water for a complete healthy and fun meal.

Creatine FactsBy John Decker

“Creatine is the best bodybuilding supplement you should take”

“Creatine can help build those muscles you wanted”

“Gain weight and muscles is easy, just take creatine!”

Well if you are looking to gain some muscles, then these advise or remarks would not be something new to you

Chances are you are now contemplating as to whether to start taking creatine as advised but just something is holding you back.

“Is creatine safe? Are there any bad effects of creatine?

First and foremost, creatine is not something new that has just “sprung” up in the supplements market. Its use dated way back but was actually popularised in 1992 when it was disclosed that 2 Olympic gold medallists have actually consumed creatine prior to wining their medals. From then on, creatine has been very popular among bodybuilders and competitive athletes because it accelerates gains in muscle size and strength compared to exercise alone.

Side effects of creatine

Well to say that creatine is free of adverse or side effects are far from the truth. There are claims that creatine users do experience some kind of side effects and these include nausea, vomiting, cramps, upset stomach & mood swings. However, based on a recent study, published in the September 2004 issue of the International

Journal of Sports Medicine, it shows that creatine side effects are actually rare.

For example, a group involving 175 subjects received either 10 grams of creatine or placebo daily for an average period of 310 days. Other than diarrhoea and nausea reported in 3 individuals, there were no other significant differences between the groups.

Over the last few years a number carefully controlled studies have begun to release results of short- (five days), medium- (nine weeks) and long-term (up to five years), but so far there is yet any strong supportive evidences to demonstrate that creatine supplementation has any adverse effects on blood pressure, kidney or liver function in healthy individuals.

The bottom line

Of course, the fact that large trials have yet to find any serious creatine side effects doesn’t mean that none exist. Hence, for anyone who wanted to start on creatine supplementation, it would be advisable to always seek medical advice, especially so for those with pre-existing medical problems, before using creatine.

Still undecided? Then read the article on “Should I Take Creatine” which covers more in-depth into the safety and bad effects of creatine. If you have decided to start on creatine, then learn how to maximize the effects of creatine like how to take creatine, when is the best time to take creatine and how much to take by downloading a copy of Dr Franco Obregon’s “Creatine: A Practical Guide” for more information go to www.buildyourbodymuscle.com and is available now from The Health Shack in Albany Creek call 3264 4207

Which is stronger -- concrete or bone? Answer: Bone Human bones can actually resist 40 times more stress than concrete. Don’t believe it is true? Then picture a piece of concrete the size of a bone and imagine how easily it would break.

Where was the first McDonald’s located? Answer: Arcada, California Brothers Dick and Mac McDonald open a hot dog stand called the Airdome in Arcadia, Cali-fornia. In 1940, the brothers move to San Bernardino, California, on Route 66. After noting that almost all of their profits came from hamburgers, the brothers close down the restau-rant for several months in 1948 to implement their innovative “Speedee Service System”, a streamlined assembly line for hamburgers.

FUN FAST FACTS

Can it really be easy to keep healthy and well for a lifetime?

As a doctor who specialises in natural health for families I am often asked “Is there some secret to keeping well and healthy for a lifetime?” The answer is “YES”, there ablsolutely is....In fact, there are several secrets which if you know how to apply, I totally guarantee you and your family will have the best health you can. But before I tell you what these secrets to optimal health are, let me ask you a few questions. Think carefully before you answer.

Have you ever got sick with the ‘flu going around but noticed there were some people who never seem to get it? And you just couldn’t figure out why?

Do you know someone you cared about that got sick very suddenly - maybe cancer or heart disease - when they were only at say 40 or 50 - while there are other people who smoke and drink until they are 90...and seem to be able to get away with it?

Have you ever had an important deadline to meet or appoinment to keep that you had to cancel because you got sick? For what seems like no reason at all?

Are you apprehensive about growing old (or older) because you see so many older people crippled with arthritis, bent over and just lost the joy

of life? Or worse still that you won’t even get the chance to be old at all?

Do you ever feel like “Everything causes cancer” so you might as well not worry about anything at all - besides you know that worry itself causes cancer.

Do you fear that you won’t physically be able to do the things you want to do to enjoy your life when you retire...after years of hard work so you can retire gracefully, you just can’t live the life you want.

Do you ever feel like it doesn’t matter what you do, you can’t lose that weight and get that feeling of genuine wellness back like you had when you were a kid.

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, then I have some important news for you. The news is that you are not alone. In fact that list of questions was created talking to literally thousands of individuals, parents and grandparents about the concerns they face when they think about health.

The fact is all of us want good health - and most of us are willing to do what it takes to achieve it, but repeated failure of things tried in the past have led to disillussionment, disappointment and frustration.

Nearly all people have had the experience of feeling like they have found the answer to their health

challenges only to find it hasn’t been the Holy Grail they intially thought.

And whats worse, each time it happens, its easy to get more and more disillusioned about the next quick fix you see so that when the real truth is placed before you, you can be indifferent and not even see it for what it is.

These types of situations make it easy to feel pessimistic towards health in general, and can definately lead you to believe that all health and wellness ideas are just a waste of time, energy and money.

But is that the real thruth? Is it really too much to ask that you and your family should be able to enjoy your God-given right to health and happiness.

Is there any hope?

Why some things seem to work for a while.

When we try something to improve our health and it doesn’t work at all, it is not a fun feeling. Not only have we failed to restore that feeling of wellness that we know is possible, we feel like we have fallen for that old trick again.

But what’s even worse is when you try something and it seems to work for a while and then it stops working or it helps a bit but not enough to make a real difference, or it helps one problem but creates another.

Worst of all though, is NOT KNOWING WHY.

At least if you understood why things didn’t work you would closer to knowing what to do that does work.

I know this very well because I have been just that person in the past.

I’ve been the person who struggles to find good health while battling from one health problem to the next.

But let me let you in on the first secret - maybe you have already worked it out for yourself:

None of those quick-fix, patchwork solutions work in the long-term because your health comes from the inside-out, not the outside-in.

It doesn’t matter how many things you put on or in your body, unless you work with your bodies intrinsic design, what I like to call your Innate Intelligence, everything will fail to get you the health you want in the long run.

In fact, it is only by working with your bodies Innate Intelligence, in harmony with your God-given design, that you will ever restore your health to your true potential. Think about it. Nothing else can truly work in the long run - and that is where it counts.

Till next time. Yours in good health.Dr Richard Sawyer, ChiropractorVitality Chiropractic

food & wine guideFestive Fizz

Champagne Pol Roger Brut NV Epernay FRANCE

One of the finest and purest offerings from the heart of Champagne. Pol Roger avoid the use of oak maturation for their wines to allow the purity of fruit and the elegance to shine through. This wine is cellared for a minimum of three years before release and is an even blend of Pinot Noir (giving body and depth), Pinot Meunier (providing freshness and youth) and Chardonnay adding elegance. Since 1849 family owned and operated.

Jansz Premium Cuvee NVPipers River TAS

Tasmania represents the best possible place to grow grapes for the production of sparkling wine second only to Champagne. The climate of the region adds to the ripening period being long and cool providing excellent flavour and acid structure for making sparkling wine. Biscuits characters on the nose with a creamy textured palate make this wine fantastic value for money and a real crowd pleaser.

Bleasdale Sparkling Shiraz NV

Sparkling Shiraz may sound a little odd to some, but here in Queensland with scorching tempatures at Christmas these wines are absolute heaven for the red wine buffs amongst us. Drink the same way has Champagne and sparkling wine, chill first and pour into a flute and toast away. Try this at lunch time with your roasted turkey and cranberry sauce.A rich palate with the kick of a liqeuer added during the wine making process.

Jansz Premium Rose NVPipers River TAS

This wine is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay and has a bright pink colour. The palate tastes of Strawberries and cream and like its big brother has an enduring creamy mouth feel. This wine has a little sweetness but this is mainly contributed to by the dominace of Pinot Noir in the blend. For those who like a little sweetness but not a lot this is the ideal wine for drinking by the pool.

By Graham Johnston The silly season is upon us and the time for celebration is here. Whether it is celebrating with family, friends or your colleagues at the work Christmas party the preferred drink of choice should be Champagne or Sparkling wine. Nothing gets the festivities started like the sound of corks popping and sight of bubbles flowing into and over the glass. Here are four of my personal favourites.

Beyond BeautyB

By Alisa Cork

When Moyra Rossell took over the Bridgeman Downs beauty salon formerly known as Vanity in late 2007, she was finally able to realise her dream.

“I really love pampering people and making them feel relaxed and rejuvenated,” Moyra said. “Which is exactly why I called the business ‘Pamperzone’.”

At Pamperzone, clients are made to feel completely at ease while they are treated to their choice of a wide range of beauty therapy treatments on offer.

Moyra’s highly experienced beauticians, nail technologists and massage therapists are focused on providing a service which is wholly beneficial, worthwhile and exceptional value.

“I want my clients to feel they received great service and that their money was well spent whenever they visit Pamperzone,” Moyra explained.

Pamperzone offers the full complement of beauty services, including facial treatments, waxing, nails and makeup, manicures and pedicures, massage therapy (aromatherapy and lymphatic drainage) and spray tanning, which Moyra says is one of Pamperzone’s most popular treatments.

“We are known widely for our spray tanning which is so successful because of the product we use and its ability to spread evenly without streaking and discolouring,” Moyra said. “It caters to all skin tones and provides a very natural bronze colour.”

Moyra believes that spray tanning has become so popular due to people knowing much more about the harmful effects of the sun & the quality spray tanning that is available

“Sun damage is now a health issue of the past because people can achieve a healthy glow which makes them feel so much better without spending hours in the sun,” Moyra said.

Another area of expertise known to Pamperzone are facial treatments specialising in therapies for problem skin. Microdermabrasion is one such treatment whereby the skin’s surface is treated over several visits to create a smoother appearance.

Pamperzone beauticians can also use a Lamp Probe and an IPL (Indirect Pulse Light) to manage broken capillaries and blemishes, including sun spots.

Moyra maintains that Pamperzone prices are competitive and affordable, and is this month offering special package prices available in time for Christmas.

If a little pick-me-up for the holiday season is just what you need, Pamperzone is currently offering a special on a course of four spray tans for just $120, usually $140 or $35 each.

Christmas pamper packages are the perfect gift for the woman or man who has everything but loves to be pampered. Contact Pamperzone on 3353 3993 for your appointment or call in to arrange that special gift at 3/5 Canopus Street, Bridgeman Downs.

Pamperzone is open late on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

For gorgeous skin that lasts year round, cleaning is the key to success. All sins can be removed with a great

cleansing regime; whether that be from the makeup that was left on for the entire weekend or that pimple that was squeezed so much it launched like a missile.Knowing what your skin needs is simple;

as it will tell you if it likes something. Any negative reaction to skincare should result in the skincare being discontinued. In general the rule of thumb is to go

natural or even better certified organic; these products are better for your skin and less likely to cause any aggravations. Natural products used during the cleansing process increase antioxidant and even pH levels naturally. When cleansing; its most efficient to

use a cleanser that will also remove any makeup, dirt and grime; these generally come in the form of a gel or a milk/foam; the latter is generally more suitable for dryer skins types where are gels tend to befit more oily skins. Secondly use a gentle exfoliator, the

coarseness and frequency are determined by different skin types; always be aware that dead skin doesn’t need to be stripped off, the gentler the better. Finally some form of toner should be

used to regulate the skin. A rosewater mist makes a superb toner with its pH balancing qualities as well as its pure form

of hydration. Jurlique has created a lovely range of

biodynamic mists that come in lavender, rosewater, and citrus to suit all skin types and personal preferences. With these simple tips to assist - gorgeous

skin is possible for everyone.

Albany Hair Directions or AHD is a unique fusion of traditional attitudes, innovative hair design and cutting edge techniques.

AHD owner and manager, Rachel Blacker, says since taking over the salon six years ago, she has focused on the importance of consultation to ensure her clients are more than satisfied with the results.

“My hair stylists are intent on defining the essence of an individual, whether your hair is black or blonde, short or long, and whether the look you are after is edgy or traditional,” Rachel explained.

And with their recently established, classy and upmarket new salon, Albany

Hair Directions covers everything in between to provide modern hairdressing techniques in a stunning environment.

AHD cater for both males and females, adults and children in a variety of ways and focus on more than the style of a client’s hair. The stylists are all skilled in Trichology, the study of hair and scalp health.

“Having knowledge about Trichology is so helpful in cases where clients have concerns, whether they are minor irritation problems or something more serious like psoriasis,” Rachel said.

“Often through consultation, we can determine the source of the problem, and then recommend treatments to help a client improve the health of their hair and scalp with the best results possible.”

Rachel’s focus on professionalism and expertise includes regular in-house training for her staff, whilst the stylists also attend specialised hairdressing seminars whenever possible.

During Rachel’s six years at AHD, the business has been a finalist in the North West Business Achiever Awards twice and has also won a Queensland-wide hair makeover competition.

AHD has also received a Goldwell Judges recognition which is acknowledged throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Part of the Albany Hair Directions

culture includes providing a service to the community at the same time as looking after their clients.

“AHD has an environmentally-friendly focus and we encourage clients to recycle their old product bottles by providing a refill service at a discounted price,” Rachel explained.

“We also provide half-price colours on Mondays for those who find it difficult to have their hair coloured on a regular basis.”

TIP OF THE MONTH

You don’t have to do everything yourself this Christmas. When people offer to help out, accept their offer. If they don’t, dele-gate. Ask people to bring a dish instead of doing it all yourself. Give the kids a few extra jobs to do while they are on holidays. It’s your Christmas too! Enjoy it!

business & money

Resolve to get back in the black in 09By Joseph Montanaro

*Certified Financial Planner with USAA

(ARA) - For many of us the only area we may lose weight over the holidays is in our wallet. And as credit card statements begin to arrive with the reminder -- and obligation -- of holiday spending, consumers should resolve now to lower their debt in the New Year.

Losing weight and losing debt are among the top New Year’s resolutions every year, unfortunately, the resolve of consumers to stick to their plans typically diminishes when a plan is not in place to ensure the goal is achieved.

Many consumers set goals that may be too ambitious, whether trying to lose weight or lower debt. With 15 years of experience as a financial planner, including the last six as a salaried planner with USAA, I truly believe consumers can achieve their debt reduction goals by following five simple steps:

1. Start with a specific goal. It’s great to want to eliminate all debt and start with a clean slate, but when faced with the proverbial mountain of debt, the goal may seem daunting. So start small, and add incremental goals along the way. For example, to pay down $20,000 in credit-card debt -- and credit-card debt is what’s known

as “bad” debt because of the typically high interest rates and the money spent isn’t being used to purchase a long-term asset like a house -- the first goal can be to eliminate 20 percent of that total within 6 months. Then set new goals with each milestone you reach.

2. Put the plan on paper. “Budget” is not a bad word, so embrace it. One of the first things I advise consumers who want to get their debt under control is to establish a realistic budget, and stick to it. Put the budget on paper or online, and adhere to it with each pay check. Committing to stick to a budget can have multiple benefits -- it can help prevent piling on more debt and can identify extra money that can be put toward debt payments.

3. Track progress. There’s nothing more satisfying than not paying interest to a credit-card company. As debt decreases and less interest is charged, more money will be available each month for other expenses -- or for those unexpected emergencies that occur from time to time. Continually tracking progress over time will help keep the overall goal front and centre, and allow for budget adjustments as more money is freed up over time.

4. Splurge ... in moderation. While keeping a focus on reducing debt undoubtedly will require some sacrifice, it’s OK to splurge on a reward for a job well done from time to time. But keep in

mind that moderation is the key. Maybe one reward is a night on the town. If so, avoid the five-star restaurant and enjoy something at a more moderate price point. In fact, “moderation” is a good way to start thinking about how to approach spending overall.

Eliminating debt and keeping it in check is a great way to start the New Year. With a plan in place and a disciplined approach, anyone can start on the road to securing a better financial future.

Astrology is the real story of your life and your relationship to the Universe and the many other people you encounter on your journey. Astrology is your key to a doorway beyond the mystery of life leading to understanding, self empowerment and ultimately Self Realisation. It’s a hectic month especially regarding your work. Expect things to intensify in the last month of the year with Pluto and Jupiter demanding you put your foot down and transform things especially on the 4th, 10th, and 20th. Romance however, is a better deal with Venus bringing ample opportunity for friendship and love. Love and affection could come knocking at your door around the 20th so make room in your diary..

Mental renovation will give you the jitters but it is necessary if you are going to improve the quality of your life and relationships. Big changes all round are likely to occur after the 8th but you must be slow and steady in the way you present your case. You don’t want to let a battle of wills interfere with other aspects of your life. Disputes over money are likely around the 17th so have your facts and figures handy. You will avoid world war 3.

You won’t be able to keep up with your spouse or lover this month so don’t get angry at them! This is simply a wakeup call because you may not be active enough and your stamina needs to be developed through extra sport and dietary considerations. The 20th to the 24th is an exciting period which brings success and also a lot more motivation to get out and about. An unexpected event around the 27th will make life a lot more interesting.

Life will throw you a curved ball and you’ll be completely incapable of resisting an unusual character who crosses your path this month. This could truly be someone of soul mate material so remain open - with your eyes, your ears, your heart and soul as well. Passion is strong but may be mis-directed so try not to take your frustrations out on co-workers. This will backfire after the 18th and create all sorts of problems on the work front. You may want to start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions early.

Financial concerns weigh heavily on your head over the coming few weeks. This could be difficult after the 13th. Tightening your belt obviously means cutting back expenses on luxury goods which would ordinarily be part and parcel of your habitual daily life. By reducing your expenditure you feel that the Universe is denying you what you deserve. Try to think a little more broadmindedly about this. The law of karma, especially with money and material resources, is unfailing.

Pin up your best thoughts and ambitions on your vision board, and wait for the universe to provide you with the very thing you’ve been dreaming of. Lucky Jupiter continues to offer you opportunities in your current relationship and work. Between the 26th and the 30th utilise this energy to effect change by creating it in your mind first and then in the world. Christmas should be an intensely happy period this year. Try not to overdo spending however as Mercury and Mars indicate you are likely to forget that with spending, bills are inevitable.

your stars

Mars damages your personal happiness this month ( if you let it ) by creating troubles on the home front. The only way to weather the storm after the 3rd is to remain aloof and realise that as with all cycles in nature, these ones too will pass. You may accuse someone of short changing you after the 28th when in fact it’s your own oversight that is the problem. You may also be dealing on behalf of others to help them make heads or tails of their own health concerns and may learn something about yourself in the process in December.

The tempo of life continues to get faster as 2008 draws to a close. Mars and Saturn cause you some problems and it’s important to not get frustrated if you can’t get everything done yesterday. As long as you can find non-disruptive ways of releasing your pent-up energy, you’ll feel a whole lot better this month. Family get-togethers are excellent in the first week of the month and relationships will be loving and nurturing between the 5th and the 10th.

You’ll be noted for your impartial advice and your ability to help others solve their problems during December. Between the 7th and the 11th be clear and concise in what you suggest. Once the word gets out, however, you might find yourself inundated with calls for assistance. You need to make it clear that although you are a good friend, you’re not a half-way house or a psychological advisory service. Also let them know that you are not infallible.

You’ll be doing a lot of things to please someone else this month but in the long term this will not be in your best interests. For example, if your partner needs you to accompany them to a work function or social event at which you feel uncomfortable you’ll be squirming the whole night long. The company you keep may not be your choice but you will have to bite your tongue and hang in there for the ride. Positive days include the 6th, 10th and 25th. If you have a say in when to make concessions to others, try choosing these dates as it will work to your advantage.

Unplanned and spur of the moment outings and activities with friends may not go to plan and will in fact create unforseen obstacles for you. Between the 15th and the 18th you could overlook a vital piece of information which could cause a backlash and ruin what should otherwise be a pleasurable event. Go through your little black book and make sure you haven’t left out anyone for a social event. They are likely to retaliate if they feel that they’ve been elbowed out of the picture. Expect plenty of small trips this month. It’s a hectic one for you.

Venus will provide you the fuel to make some wonderful new changes in your home life. Your plans may be obstructed between the 6th and the 8th but persist because things will start to go smoothly and you have the support you want from others by the 13th. A poor choice of clothes, colour or your fashion/cosmetic statement generally, might be regretted professionally around the 14th. Pay more attention to that before leaving your front door.

We all know how vital it is for staff retention and to motivate our employees and when it comes to effectiveness, nothing beats employee Rewards & Giveaways. The short term cost of these is far outweighed by the long term benefits of employee satisfaction and performance.

We should know that our home is our own paradise; we need to always take care of it. So, when it comes to our kitchen, we should always be clean. The entire kitchen can be clean but if the kitchen sink is dirty the rest of the kitchen just doesn’t seem clean either. The kitchen sink is a focal point in the kitchen so a clean kitchen sink is important to the overall level of cleanliness in the entire room. It is always known that our kitchen sink is one of the heavily used in our house, so cleaning it is an important thing to keep in mind.

Empty the sink - Remove everything from behind the sink. If you store your dish soap on the back of the sink, move it to the counter as you clean. If you keep a container of hand soap on the back of the sink, set it aside. Put away any dishes that may be sitting in the dish drainer and remove the dish drainer. It is important to have the kitchen sink empty to avoid anything that will be a distraction once you are cleaning your kitchen sink. Always remember that your kitchen sink is one of the most important parts of your home, cleaning it is a good thing to do,

Wash the sink –Wash its accessories before you wash the sink itself. Start with the dish drainer. If you look closely

at the dish drainer you’ll be surprised to notice the way dust accumulates along the various grooves. Use a scrub brush to wash away all of the dust from the hard to reach surfaces of the drainer. Rinse well and set the drainer aside. Remember that if you do this you will have been able to easily do the next parts of the cleaning.

Use cleaning products – Use only cleaning products approved for your kitchen sink. If your sink is stainless steel you can use an abrasive kitchen cleanser but if it is porcelain you’ll need something that is approved for the more delicate surface to prevent scratching or etching. Whatever the sink is made of just check the label to make sure your cleaner is approved for it. You also need to scrub the entire sink just to make sure you are doing the right step. Your kitchens sink needs to have everything cleaned and scrubbed for better results of course.

Dry the entire sink – Lastly you have to dry the entire sink with a kitchen towel. Return the drainer and soap bottles to their designated locations. Admire your sparkling clean kitchen sink, after all these steps are done, your Kitchen Sink will be good as new. So I suggest make this a habit so your kitchen can always have the best condition for future use and ensure it is safe for your family.

For years, the 17 kilometre stretch of white sandy beach has been Queensland’s best kept secret when every other pocket of sand along the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and the North Queensland beaches have been built-up, rebuilt and developed to the point that vacant land is a rarity.

Moore Park Beach Community Association President Alan Davis said the wonderful family environment that almost 2000 locals call home will not remain a secret for much longer.

“We have been fortunate to live in one of the best beachside towns in Australia. We are also lucky that for years we have been able to get away with it without anyone else finding out!” Mr Davis said.

A far cry from the racing city with its many busy attractions, Moore Park Beach in contrast provides families and couples with its own attractions giving people the chance to escape the ‘rat race’ which is causing so much executive stress.

Local families are enjoying the new services to the area in the form of a new primary school, restaurant, shops, and a tavern with children’s play area. The Community Association’s hall is another source of pride and provides a place for many public functions and events including the annual Arts Festival.

Moore Park Beach also features excellent fishing, crabbing and boating opportunities along with the stunning stretch of white sandy beach, patrolled

by award-winning surf life-savers and a thriving little nipper squad.

Moore Park Beach is alive with local wildlife and birdlife and kangaroos are often seen grazing on the beach reserve and on other grassy parklands in the area. Turtle watching is a favourite pastime for locals, who can experience first-hand the laying and hatching season right under their noses on their own parcel of beach.

Mr Davis said the Community Association, Lions Club and Fishing Club are proud to have extremely active community members at Moore Park Beach, with everyone pitching in to

make the town increasingly attractive to families and holiday-makers.

“The clean air, sounds of the ocean, low traffic and all-weather roads and of course the people, are what make Moore Park Beach the perfect place to settle down,” Mr Davis said.

“It will not be long before the word is spread about our extraordinary beach paradise.”

Now is your chance to WIN as Balanced and Moore Park Beach give you the opportunity to win a 3 day holiday stay at one of Moore Park Beaches gorgeous Maxi Huts for up to four people.

LEE’S TOP TIP OF 2008By Lee Hunt, PGA Professional & Golf Manager, North Lakes Resort Golf Club

“If you have the choice of any club to practice with when you are at your driving range, spend twice the time with your putter than with any other club in your bag”.

“Play ball far enough away to get full extension, your stance can assist in unlocking that extra distance and consistency you need to continue to bring your handicap down”

Use the checklist below to organise your stance:1. Aim clubface FIRST and then align your body.2. At address, your hands should be about four inches from your

thighs.3. Keep your head up.4. Bend forward from the hips about 33 degrees and tilt body

toward right at address.5. Let your arms hang naturally.6. Elbows should be bent slightly inward at address.7. Keep your chin up. Maintaining minimal knee bend.8. Keep right knee flexed and stable. Don’t let it slide or straighten

throughout swing. (for drives, set up with 80% of weight on right foot)

9. Make sure the ball is not too far forward (for drives, it should be at a point below left shoulder)

10. Position ball under the logo on your shirt.11. Play ball far enough away from body to get full extension.12. The longer the club, the more the left foot should be flared

out – from perpendicular for short irons to 45 degrees for the
