    ON THE LOOKOUT

    FIVE SUSPECTED TERRORISTS

    KILLED IN BALI

THE JAKARTAPOSTFive suspected terrorists were reportedly killed

during police raids at two different sites late Sunday. Police have yet to

issue an official statement on the nature of the raids and details on the

    casualties.

The first raid took place at around 10:15 p.m. in a budget hotel, Laksmi,

on Jl. Danau Poso 99X, Sanur. The area is known as one of the most

famous red-light districts in Bali, where people can easily obtain a cheap

room from staff at budget hotels who rarely ask for valid identification

from their guests. Neighbors said that they heard a burst of gunfire at

around that time. Three were killed here and another two in Soputan,

Bali Legislative Council member I Made Arjaya, who lives 30 meters

away from the site of the first raid, told The Jakarta Post.

Soputan is a street in a densely-populated area in west Denpasar.

A police source at the scene c onfirmed members of the group werebelieved to have been raising funds for terrorism via armed robberies.

The five people are part of the group that masterminded the 2010

CIMB Niaga bank robbery in Medan [North Sumatra]. We have tailed

them for months before we made the raids, the field operative, who

    wished to remain anonymous, said.

Police had confiscated firearms, he said, and some intelligence reports

suggested that the group intended to plan robberies in order to generate

money for future terrorist activities. The police source refused to reveal

further information as it could disrupt police investigations. Arjaya said

that three suspected terrorists had rented a room in the budget hotel.

Officers from the polices Densus 88 counterterrorism unit stormed the

room and shot the suspects dead.

They rented a room in this area probably because it is ver y easy toblend in here. Little did they know that the police had tailed them for

several days, he said, adding that local leaders had been notified by

police to increase their alertness prior to the raid.

Bali Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Hariadi denied that the suspects were

terrorists, describing them instead as professional robbers plotting to

commit a heist. He said the suspects had been carrying firearms at the

    time of the raids.

Earlier, Hariadi denied that there were six alleged terrorists who entered

the island last month. Hariadi insisted that tighter security check s were

    aimed at reducing crime rates.

    STORM KILLS TWO, CAUSES

    RP 2B DAMAGE

    THE JAKARTAPOSTA powerful

windstorm pounded the resort island for t wo

hours late on Saturday night, claiming the lives

of two men and inflicting damage amounting

    to Rp 2 billion (US$220,000).

The casualties were identified as I Wayan

Nada, 57, and I Made Sumarna, 60, both

residents of Sukawati village. The men had

taken shelter from the worsening weather at

Bale Gong, an open pavilion in the yard of the

villages Air Jeruk Temple, Gianyar, where

the traditional musical ensemble gamelan is

    usually performed.

The death toll from a series of natural disasters

to have plagued Bali since early last week has

    now risen to 11.

    The Meteorology, Climatology and

Geophysics Agencys (BMKG) Bali officereported that the powerful storm started

pounding the island at around 11 p.m. At

its peak, winds of 88.2 kilometers per

hour destroyed trees, billboards and roofs

    throughout southern Bali.

    The Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency

(BPBD) reported that 22 Hindu temples,

two senior high schools (SMA 1 Kuta Utara

and SMA 2 Mengwi), two hotels and villas,

two food stalls, and dozens of houses were

    damaged.

The strong winds were followed by

torrential rain and high tides that damaged

an embankment at Canggu Beach. The

windstorm damaged the roof of my house

and the ensuing rain destroyed my book

collection. The wind was so powerful it blew

away all the paintings on my houses outer

wall, said Intan Paramita Apsari, a resident of

    Kerobokan, North Kuta.

Bad weather also forced the harbor authorityto suspend ferry services at Gilimanuk Port,

which connects Bali to Java, and Padangbai

Port, which connects the island with Lombok,

due to the high waves and s trong currents.

The BMKG official in charge of data and

information, I Nyoman Gde Wir yajaya,

said that Saturday nights disasters were

triggered by the formation of extremely large

    cumulonimbus cloud above the island.

    NIKE+ FUELBANDBECAUSE LIFES A GAME

    INTERACTIVE

    8-BIT QUESTION BLOCK LAMP

Those of you who are absolutely in love with what Nintendo has delivered via the

Mario Bros. universe will definitely fall in love with this $74.99 fixture in your home

coming in the form of the Interactive 8-bit Question Block Lamp. Taking up to 2 weeks

to process an order simply because it nee ds to be built from scratch, this labor of love is

custom made right from the get go, measuring 6 x 6 x 6, and is made out of laser-cut

plexiglass. Inside, you will find energy-effici ent LEDs running the show, while the

lamp itself is light enough to be suspended from an integrated 11-foot power cord. It will work just about anywhere thanks to it being

100v-240v compatible, and there is also a custom acrylic stand sold se parately if you prefer to place it by your bed.

Unlike in the Mario video games, you need not punch this lamp, although a slow motion punching action that ends with a light touch

will suffice in turning the lamp on or off. Each eighth time you toggle the light, you will be rewarded with a 1-Up noise, but standard

punches will play back a classic coin noise.

Well it looks like Nike is at the ready to save us from ourselves with their new FuelBand, How active do

you wish you were? Let your Nike+ FuelBand know and it will monitor your progress, track your time,

steps taken, calories burned and keep tabs on your NikeFuel. Compete wi th others or against yourself,

everyday can be a new challenge.

The Nike FuelBand even looks cool. A high tech bracelet that displays your exercise statistics in LED

lights and with the companion app and the Nike+ website your fitness goals are destined to become

a reality. Your FuelBand starts the day red and turns from red to yellow to green as you hit your daily

fitness goals. The FuelBand certainly looks more comfortable than some of those larger wrist fitness

devices and much more user friendly and accessible than other bands simply bec ause it has a display

and the ability to sync wirelessly, the Nike+ FuelBand comes in three sizes and can easily be adjusted

for whether youre wearing it on your right or left wrist. The Fuelband should be aavailable for around

149 bucks, but it is currently sold out at Nike.com However, go to the website for more info or to sign

up to be notified that they are back in stock. In the meantime, less barbecue and more exercise for me.

Aperture Labs has something special lined up for all of you Portal 2 fans we are talking about a

$24.99 Portal 2 Life-Size Inflatable Sentry Turret, where it can be inflated up to 40 of protective

goodness. After all, you being a person full of hot air, would be able to huff and puff your way

through this inflatable Sentry Turret in a jiffy, no? After all, with austerity measures being

introduced across different governments and corporations worldwide, it would make sense that

such Sentry Turrets take on a more portable and c onvenient method of transportation as they

can be deflated when not in use.

You can position it just about anywhere that you want it to protect, although its main function will

probably be as effective as that of a scarecrow meaning, it works only once (or never), until

someone figures out that there is no ammo at all with this. This is where you will need to practice

your best rendition of Target acquired if you were to send folks scurrying around in fear.

I cant afford to have a personal trainer, right? Wrong!

You cant afford NOT to have a personaltrainer.

Obesity rates are soaring. Peoplearound the world are becoming more

and more inactive through sedentarywork and lifestyles. Type 2 diabetesis commonplace. As quickly as thesenumbers soar, there is also a relationshipto be made between low motivation andinspiration and a lowering of individualschallenge thresholds.

We see the pounds creep onto the scalesat first and then, unchecked, it canbecome a snowball effect as we agreewith ourselves to get back into exerciselater. For many, later never comes. And by the time the others agree withthemselves its now time, the molehill hasturned into a mountain.

A personal trainer brings lots of tools tostart, endure and complete the climb.

    Commit then select.

Pick your PT wisely, they must fityou. Watch them train others first. How do they interact? Is there goodcommunication? Confidence? Does the

session look like something you would

like to be doing? Most PTs will offer afree trial session take them for a testdrive. Chat. See if you connect. Checktheir credentials on paper but really, its in person where it counts.

    Commit to the investment.

Budget is important but beware false

ecomomies. Paying less does notnecessarily mean a great deal. Rememberthe old saying you pay for what you get.Parting with your cash is one step tocommitment. You now want to seea return on that investment, and thisdesire will help drive you and keepyou coming back for more. PTs willoften give you a discount to buy a packof sessions. Do it! This isnt a short termthing. This is the kickstart you need to abetter and healthier you. Think long termgain, long term change. The differencebetween this and all the wasted dollarsspent on un-used gym membershipsstarts at the point below.

    Commit to the appointment.

Once, twice or even three times a week, depending on your goals and how fastyou want to achieve them. Because youhave a locked in appointment, this willmotivate and drive you to the session.Even better, the sheer act of payingsomeone for a service will probably be all

the motivation you need to consistentlyshow up. People are more apt to keeptheir appointments when they have paidfor them in advance. The gym could beacross the road but if you dont have togo, then you could always choose not to.

    Commit to the workout.

How many times have you gone to thegym and wasted time by being unsurewhat to do, or do next? Perhaps its a bitboring. Same program, different day. Not

any more. Turn up ready and psyched to

train hard. Maximise your precious time.Get the most that you can from your PT

within that hour. Learn about exercise.Learn about your body. Ask questions.Your PT will record, evaluate and manageyour challenges. The benefit will notonly be the time effective workoutsqeezed into a busy day, but also the valueadded take home benefits including theexercise afterburn* and the feel-goodendorphins^ that will naturally happenin your body long after the workout hasended, are organic icing on the cake.

So, the first step is committment. I hopeyoure not surprised.

In Personal Trainer Part 2, we willexplore the key things that you can expectyour Personal Trainer to bring to this newrelationship.

    * Afterburn EPOC (Excess Post-exerciseOxygen Consumption). Or, the oxygenconsumption, above resting level, that thebody is utilising to return itself to its pre-exercise state. During this period extra

calories are expended and this period can lastfor up to 848 hours!

^ Feel good endorphins Endorphins are thebodys natural feel-good chemicals, and whenthey are released through exercise, your moodis boosted naturally. Exercise also releasesadrenaline, serotonin and dopamine. Thesechemicals work together to make you feelgood. Endorphins are referred to as the bodysnatural pain-killer.

    FROM CATWALK TO

    WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Indonesian supermodel and celebrity Fahrani Empel is not just a pretty ace

shes multi-talented, award-winning actress, cooler than an Esky whos

ound her mark helping to save the rainorests

    Most Indonesians know who

    Fahrani Empel is. For those

    not amiliar, you cant exactly

miss her. Exotically beautiul Fa (or short)

bounds in or our meeting, 179cm tall and

lean, displaying tasteul tattoos and platinum

blonde hair setting o dusky skin. Even

her dog is exotic, a monstrously large white

    Argentine Masti ! Unsurprisingly, this

Jakarta gal has been a model since 14, gracing

Milan, Paris and New York Fashion Weeks as

an Indonesian supermodel. But theres more

than meets the eye to Ms Empel and since we

last met three years ago, shes acquired more

    impressive strings to her bow.

At 28, Fa could stil l be an internationa l

model, but like the more intelligent ones,

nds shes got all she can rom modeling

(although she still does occasion ashion

shoots or riends). As you get older, its not

that important; I dont want to be stuck in

modeling orever, besides Im now reed- up

    to ollow other pursuits.

Ennui, is due or release. Although shes

proud o this UFO-themed lm, she admits,

Te earlier lms were better! and while

oered various lm parts, shes holding out

or quality scripts leading to an international

acting career. When Director Oliver Stone

was shooting in Indonesia, he apparently was

looking or me; unortunately, I was away at

    the time!

With years o a shion experience, the

designing bug inevitably blossomed and last

year, Fa successully launched her designer

CAS sunglasses. I love designing sunglasses

and its not too time-consuming. She designs

new collections resh, unisex, original and

ashionable every six months. CAS now

retails in selected stores worldwide includingHong Kong, Milan, New York, Berlin, okyo,

Austra lia and Bali, priced rom US$200-

    300. Fa is also a stylist and produces music

videos or riends, neatly tting-in with her

modeling-acting background and t ricks learnt

    in ront o the camera.

Javanese Fa has lived in Ba li or seven years,

but other ar-ung places lure personally and

proessional ly. She still plans to spend several

months a year in Bali (Bali will always be

    home) but continue spending summers

in Australia (Great creative energy, lots o

stu going on) time in New York and make

artistically vibrant Berlin her new base: I like

the ve Bs: Brooklyn, Bali, Bondi, Borneo

    and Berlin!

However, its Borneo which seems to have

given her renewed direction. A chance

reading o an article in Australia, led Fa to

get involved in Project Borneo, applying via

an on-line video to become an Action Agent,

helping save the Indonesian rainorest and

educate people globally on this urgent cause.

Indonesias orests are the worlds lungs, yet

its deorestation is the worst, with orests cut

down at the speed o 300 ootball elds per

hour Fa laments. From 150 applicants, Fa

emerged as one o the 15 selected nalists:

    last September, these international eco-

warriors spent around 20 days in the heart

o Indonesias Borneo rainorests, part o

    pioneering DeorestACION project,

trying to stop the relentless deorestation,

working with local Dayak communities andactivists and ollowed on-line by like-minded

    students and supporters worldwide.

Fa returns to Borneo in April or two more

    months, ollowed by subsequent ollow-up

    trips, continuing this pioneering project

    which includes developing a sustainable

    model eco-village and rescuing displaced

    orang-utans: Tis is a long-term project. Its

experienced and beginners, with ree breaks,

    lagoons and varying conditions creating

some o the worlds best waves, including an

usually high number o textbook, consistent

tubes. Indonesias tropical climate means the

water is always warm enough and although

there are two seasons, you can still sur

all-year round by simply switching coasts

unlike other islands, never too ar to travel.

Contrary to popular olklore, that Australian

surers were the rst to discover Balis

awesome waves in the 1960s-1970s, these

beauts were already being sured by both

oreign and Balinese surers as early as the

1930s! Pivotal to this, Kutas amed beach

and (allegedly) Caliornian Bob Koke, who

opened the Bali Hotel on Kuta Beach and

brought with him his Hawaiian long board.

Te rest is history, although surng didnt

immediately catch on. However surers, especially Australians, started to trickle into

Bali rom the 1960s, when more breaks, such

as the Bukit Peninsula arguably Balis most

    spectacular were discovered.

Kuta is where it all started and perhaps

    Balis most recognized surng beach;

surers can also head out to Kutas outer

rees on hired shing boats. Further up the

South-west coast, Canggu is another long-

running Mecca or the international surng

community. But its waves o the Bukit

Peninsula (southern Bali), which are regarded

as some o the worlds nest, guaranteed to

get any seriously experienced surer in a tizzy,

with a selection o let- hand and right-hand

breaks on either side Breaking on shallow

rees, Balis most challenging, biggest waves,

with its lovely long tubes drawing the

worlds top surers, are ound at legendary

    Suluban, Bingin/ Impossible and Dreamland

beaches.) It was those intrepid international

surers o the 70s who rst put this area onthe surng map. Experienced surers should

also check-out breaks at Nusa Dua and Nusa

    Lembongan.

During the peak, dry season (April-October)

trade winds avour surng Balis western

coast, including western Bukit breaks at their

nest, plus Kuta and Canggu. During the wet

    season (November-March) tides and winds

make the eastern coast a prime sur spot,

including Nusa Dua, Serangan and Sanur

    the latter, producing perect right-handers,

resulting in long hollow waves at high tide.

Bali is also the ideal place to learn to sur,

with Kuta and neighbouring Legian (Padma

and Double-Six) beaches or the ultimate

beginners wave best in dry season. Tese

provide a un, sae learning environment,

with long sandy beaches and shallow waters,

plus plenty o people and lie-guards on hand.

CARE TO SHARE Bali Street Dogs Foundation

    PAWS FORTHOUGHTBali Street Dogs Foundation

    by Mary Tudor

    I

like me, you were visiting Bali years

    ago, youll remember the downside

    o paradise: hounded (literally)

by packs o threatening dogs and runningor dear lie! Since then, Balis canine

situation seems to have improved, with less

(scary) dogs around: statistics back this up,

with the is lands dog population down rom

one million to approximately 300,000. In

some parts, especially touristed areas, dogs

generally appear healthier, some even wearing

collars. O course, widespread problems still

exist, but progress so ar is largely thanks to

the eorts o organizations like Yudisthira

    Swarga Foundation.

Founded in Denpasar in 1998 by

    veterinarians and other proessionals,

    Yudisthira Swarga /Bali Street Dogs

Foundation (BSDF) is a non-prot animalwelare organization, the rst Indonesian

oundation to take care o Balis street dogs

and one o only a ew ully legal non-prot

entities working with strays. Now chiey

overseen by one o the original ounders,

veterinarian, Dr. Annie Ayu Gusti, BSDFs

small ofce and veterinary clinic is based in

    Kerobokan.

Dogs are important in Balinese culture,

reected in the islands high dog population.

Although they look like strays many are

    considered community dogs, but roam

the streets looking or ood. Most are in

bad health and condition: malnourished, suering rom inected wounds, skin

    diseases, parasites, viruses, and distemper

    even dislocated joints. Additionally,

unwanted puppies are abandoned in public

    areas.

BSDFs vision is to improve animal

welare in Ba li and Indonesia; a s part

    o a long-term solution, their mission is

    population management and promoting

and raising awareness about animal welare

    provides triage-method medical treatment

medications and humane stray dog catching

methods. Tis is the most eective way,

as well as love. give dogs love! Dr. Annie

conrms. Since 2009, BDSF also handles

    stray cats.

When rabies broke out across the island in

    2008, the Indonesian government pursued

a culling policy; with Healing not killing

    mantra, BSDF however never supported

this solution. Rabies is now under control,

but BSDF still commits to working with the

government to stamp out this atal disease,

vaccinating community and stray dogs, cats

and monkeys and ensuring humane methods

o animal handling and eradication are used.

    BDSF also responds to community

requests to deal with animals that may be

rabies suspect, taking away the animal or

    observation and quarantine an emergency

    telephone number is provided. With

education, people now know how to handle

the situation and call us, states Dr. Annie.

Te emergency line still operates, but not

used so much now as the rabies situation is

    declining.

o a lesser extent, BSDF has also been

involved in Farm Animal Welare, trying to

stop inhuman animal treatment in markets,

actory arming and slaughterhouses.Recently, BSDF joined orces with the

government or projects in Sanur and

Canggu, within these areas educating school

children and communities about how to

love and care or animals, cope with sick

animals, plus carrying out sterilization and

    vaccinations programmes.

Dr. Annie has seen Balis dog situation greatly

improve over the years: Tere are less stray,

wild dogs, les s rabies cases and locals know

how to look ater dogs better, especially

children. In Bali, dogs are mainly regarded

as security and let outside but now slowly

some locals are bringing them into the home

    and treating them more humanely.

Ater helping others, ironically, BSDF needs

help itsel, due to dwindling unds. Besides

the government and BAWA, previously BSDF

has worked with animal organizations such

as IFAW and WSPA and up until ve yearsago was unded by WSPA and Sydneys Bali

Street Dogs Fund. Now BSDF must rely on

private donations, income rom -shirts and

their veterinary clinic mainly used by locals

with limited budgets. For Dr. Annie, a lovely,

big-hearted lady who takes stray dogs and cats

into her own home, BSDF is obviously a huge

personal cause, but projects have had to be

reduced and its a struggle to keep going: Ill

go crazy i we have to shut down! she says.

And so too would many dogs and cats.

    RESTAURANT

    WANT SHRIMP?

    Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

    Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

I you like themed restaurants, youll

probably enjoy the Bubba Gump Shrimp

    Co., an international chain restaurant

based on the 1994 movie, Forrest Gump.

Well, though the restaurant is not loosely

based on the movie, it has everything butom Hanks in leg braces. Anyway, all over

the world, Bubba Gump is known or their

shrimp; on the menu youll nd great options

o shrimp including resh sh and much more!

We recently had the pleasure to dine at Bubba

Gump Shrimp Co. in Kuta, the only Bubba

Gump restaurant in Indonesia. Signs, movie

memorabilia and license plates adorning the

walls screaming amous Gump quotes were

scattered around at the restaurant, creating

    un and casual atmosphere.

Te restaurant was clean, but very lively and

we must admit to not being able to look

around very much because it was so packed.

Te atmosphere is ast paced and always on

the run, In act, to get your waiter/waitresses

attention there are license plate-size signs onthe tables, reading Run Forest Run or Stop

    Forest Stop.

When we were na lly seated, our showed us

their system or requesting something. Te

sign that says Run, Forrest, Run is meant to

    alert the sta that you dont need anything;

but i you need something (a drink rell, or

anything at all) you ip the sign to the one

that says Stop, Forrest, Stop. When this

sign is showing someone will stop and see

what you need. We personal ly think that all

restaurants should adopt this idea because

sometimes its pretty hard to get the attention

o any staer in some restaurants.

    Te menu was laid out well and detailed;

Bubba Gump has the ultimate seaood youhave always wanted. Our appetizer, the

Cajun Shrimp (IDR 85,000) was splendid.

Te sauted shrimp in a spicy Cajun butter

sauce and served with garlic bread or dipping

really could stop any serious conversation.

Speaking o shrimp, our mind was blown

urther away when the Shrimpers Heaven

arrived on our table. Te combination o

hush pups, dynamite shrimp, ried shrimp,

grilled shrimp skewer, ries and, o course,

dipping sauce was certainly a genius creation.

And, as the restaurants name says it, you can

have your ribs topped with a shrimp combo.

Te dessert we had, the Chocolate Chip

Cookie Sundae, Forrest Size (Large) and Lil

Forrest Size (Small), worked just great. Te

warm, reshly-baked chocolate chip cookietopped with vanilla ice cream, caramel,

chocolate, peanuts and whipped cream was a

superb way to end your east.

Also a must-try at Bubba Gump is the Hand

the restaurants sta members swarming you,

We really recommend this restaurant or

    TRAVELOGUE Goa Gajah

Te Elephant Cave Goa Gajah is

situated on a steep bank to the side o the

main road in the Banjar o Goa, Bedaulu

Village in the area o Blahbatuh, Gianyar.

    It is approximately twenty-six kilometres

rom Denpasar and is easy to nd as it is bythe side o the main road, just East o the

crossroads in eges village. Te countryside

here is very beautiul and the cave itsel is

a very important archaeological site, as it

holds the remains o an ancient Buddhist

    monument.

Tese remains are thought to be o the same

era as the grand Borobudur temple in central

    Java.

Also the site holds relics o the God Shiva.

Te origins o the name Goa Gajah are

uncertain. Some claim that the name comes

rom the world Lwa Gajah recorded in

ancient Javanese writings saying the cave was

the home o an important Buddhist priest.

Another opinion suggests that the name

originates rom the statue o Gannesha which

is located in the western corner o the cave,

part o the statue being an elephants trunk.Te history o Goa Gajah can be seen rom

the ancient remains at the site.

Besides Shivaist relics ound inside the cave,

there are several Buddhist remains such as the

    statues o Buddha and Harito.

Tese remains appear to be o the same style

as the statues ound in Borobudur temple,

which originates in the eighth century.

Also in the cave can be ound the written

words kumon and sahy which typies the

square shaped writing o the Kediri rom East

Java. So the Elephant Cave appears to have

been the centre o religious worship o the

    God Shiva.

In the courtyard in the ront o the cave are

two square bathing pools with water gushing

into them rom waterspouts held by six emalegures. o the let o the cave entrance, in a

small pavilion is a statue o Hariti surrounded

by children. Te origin o the cave are

uncertain, one tale relates that it was created

by the mighty ngernails o the legendary

giant Kebo Iwa. Originally the name o Goa

Gajah is derived rom Lwa Gajah, the ormer

name o the river near the cave, the recent

name being Petanu River. Goa Gajah emple

is one o Balis avorite places to visit by

    tourists.

You should always wear a temple scarfa sash tied loosely around your waist. Many of the larger, more tourist temples rent

them out. You can also buy one for IDR 50,000 or less. Youll soon regain the cost if you visit a few temples and its a nice thing

to have when visiting temple where sashes are not available for rent.

Priests should be shown some respect, particularly at festival. Theyre the most important people and should, therefore, be on

the highest plane. Dont put yourself higher than them by climbing up a wall to take photographs.

Menstruating women are not allowed to enter a temple.

At the Holy Spring Water Temple (Pura Tirta Empul), no nude bathing is allowed. Bathing using shampoo, soap and toothpasteare not permitted.

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is more or less similar to other countries

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN VISITING BALI

  • 8/2/2019 Bali Down Under 18

    39/44APRIL 2012 39

    How Muc?

    Squat oilet

Bargaining is the rule here in Baliat least at the many markets and

back-street stalls. Bargaining is an art and if you are unfamiliar with

it we'd like to offer you some advice. The tips here are Bali-specific but

may help you at any place in the world where bargaining is practiced.

STOP CARING WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF YOUMany people hesitate to bargain because they don't want to seem cheap

or argumentative. But are you really will ing to pay top dollar just so you

can preserve the est eem of total stra ngers? You're only meeting them

this once, and you'll probably never meet them again.

    PICK YOUR BATTLES WISELY

Dont say how much you want to pay for a n item unless its near the end

of the process. Always tr y and drop the seller's offering price as much

as possible before opening your mouth with a price. Don't waste fif teen

minutes of bargaining over one dollar, or else you could easi ly spend a

whole hour of shopping time just saving a measly four dollars!

    SET YOUR STANDARDS

Determine what price you consider to be a great deal, a good deal, a

mediocre deal, and no deal. When you begin to negotiate, you'll start

with your "great deal" price and the seller will proba bly offer the

"mediocre deal". Your goal is to barg ain your way to a good dealthe

closer to your "great deal" price, the bet ter.

SHOW HESITATION ABOUT BUYING THE PRODUCT

Even if it's the perfect item, t he moment the seller sees that wistful

look in your eyes, they'll know they've got the upper hand. Appear

interested, as if you're willing to buy the product if the price is right,

but you can certa inly live wit hout it as wel l. When the se ller tel ls you

the price, say "Hm I don't know".

PRETEND TO CON SULT WITH A RELUCTANT PARTNERWhen the sel ler makes a n offer that is al most what you w ant, look

distressed and say "Oh, okay. Well, let me ask my husband/wife/

mother/father/friend. I've been dying to get one of these for months now,

but they keep say ing it's too expensive." If you have a cel l phone, pul l it out

and call your partner in cr ime, or even fake the call if you have to.

    BE PREPARED TO WALK AWAY

Bargaining is all about knowing how long to stick it out to be satisfied

and when you need to walk away t o look somewhere else for a better

price. Don't be afraid to walk away from the shop. Often, the salesperson

wil l call you , telli ng you they' ll give you a better price or deal.

    BE HAPPY

You need to smile t hroughout t he barga ining process. The seller is much

more likely to continue bargaining with a happy smiling face. Getting

angry rarely gets you the price you want.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN VISITING BALI

    BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER

Squat toilets are common in Bal i, but free toilet paper isnt. It might not be

necessary, as youll see in later steps. But, if this is one luxury youre unwilling

to do without, bring a bag with you too. There might not be a trash can for

used toilet paper, and squat toilets a rent designed for anything but bodily

excretions. Youll want to put the used toilet paper in a bag until you can find a

trash can. Even if you dont bring toilet paper, bring something to dry off w ith.

POUR A LITTLE BIT OF WATER IN THE TOILET

Squat toilet doesnt normally have f lushing mechanism; moistening the

surface of t he toilet will ma ke it easier to clean of f when youre done. There

should be a bucket nearby full of water.

PULL DOWN YOUR PANTS OR LIFT UP YOUR SKIRT

Be careful not to let your clothes touch the f loor or get in the way. The

direction in w hich you face will depend on t he kind of squat toilet youre

using. Frankly, it doesnt really matter, as long as ever ything lands in the hole.

The repeat visit ors know the kna ck of enjoying Bali cheaply. However,

if this is your first ti me to Bali and you think that your money has been

fully spent and prices t urn out not to be a s cheap, heres some general

illustrations about how much to spend on an item (you need t o bargain,

    of course).

Fake sunglasses (Rayban, Oakley): IDR 25,00030,000

Small Bintang beer: IDR 15,00030,000 (depending on venue)

    Beach sarong: IDR 30,000

DVD: IDR 10,000 per piece (non-original)

Beach massage: IDR 50,000 per hour

Marlboro: IDR 11,500IDR 12,000 (better get it from Circle K)

Nasi Lawar (traditional Balinese food): IDR 6,00010,000

Its very lik ely for you to encounter a s quat toilet (otherwise k nown as a squa tty

potty) in Bali . Dont be so shocked about; in fact , a lot of peoplenot necessarily

Balinesef ind squatting to be the most natura l way to have a go. Yet it can be an

intimidating (and messy) task if youve never done it before. Sure, the explicitness

of these instructions might make you a little uncomfortable, but not nearly as uncomfortable as itd be to ask someone how to use a squat

toilet, or walk away from one with a mess on the floor and on your clothes.

    DO YOUR BUSINESS

If youre defecating, it should be relatively straightforward. In fa ct, some

research suggests that going to the bathroom in the squatting position is

better for your hea lth in a va riety of ways.

    RINSE OR WIPE

If you have your own toilet paper, use it, a nd dont throw it in the toilet

when youre done; most squat toile ts wi ll get clog ged. If theres a bucket of

water nearby, use your r ight hand t o pour it on yourself and use your le ft

hand to cleanse. (This i s why in Bali, people dont shake hands or eat wit h

their left hands). Then rinse off your left hand. Dry off with toilet paper

    or fabric.

    FLUSH

If theres a flushing mechanism, this par t will be quite obvious: push the

button, pull the st ring, whatever. Other wise , pour water into the toile t

until any remnants of your business are gone.
