Slide 1By Down Under Teacher
I like to use this activity when I am introducing multiplication
and working with small groups and individuals who are
having trouble with the concept (e.g. adding instead of
finding the total number in all the groups). I then move it to a
center/centre activity.
You can use any dice you choose such as dice that only have
the numbers 2-4 (I find 1 is tricky when they are first
starting to learn about equal groups) to keep the number of
frogs you need to print down, normal 6 sided dice or even 9
sided dice. Just print the number of lily pads and frogs that
you need for whatever dice you choose. If you have little frog
counters, you could use them instead of printing out the
frogs.
I can:
1. Roll the die and lay out that number of lily pads.
2. Roll the die again and add this number of frogs
to EACH lily pad.
3. Count or skip count to find the total number of
frogs you have laid out on the lily pads.
4. Record your groups and multiplication sentence
on the answer sheet.

You’ll need to show students how to use a pencil and paperclip as the spinner. Alternatively, attached
a plastic spinner which you can find at teacher supply stores.

Array Spun Picture Multiplication
I use these repeated addition cards for students to practice
making groups and recording the multiplication sentence. I
check whether students can record the correct multiplication
sentence for each repeated addition. For example, for 3+3+3+3,
some students will record 3x4=12 because they have seen ‘3’
four times.
Therefore, I ask students to make the repeated addition with
counters. So they have to lay out one group of 3, another
group of 3 and so on. We then count the number of groups
and how many is in each group to record on the recording
sheet. **I’ve recorded the answer cards in case you want to make a match activity.**
