    FROM THE PRESIDENT

The dynamic youth of today become the leaders of tomorrow. Often, theyardstick of an organizations existence is anchored on the invaluable contributions ofthe young with their innovative minds, which complement the wisdom of experiencefound in men who preceded them.

Striking a balance of wisdom and dynamism can be a daunting task with menfrom different generations advocating clashing points of view, but which in the endlead to an acceptance of age old practices with a novel perspective. Looking atprojects and events through the eyes of a young individual could lend a fresh start toa tradition that has withstood the test of time and the glory that is Rotary finds noexception to this truism.

The Rotary Club of Manila, the first in Asia, is regarded as an icon of service to our nation and beyond our shores.Captains of industry and movers of the different professions often gather behind its cause. The club, in its humble

beginnings almost ninety-three (93) years ago, was a perfect blend of youthful glow and chronologically gifted men, witheach doing his share in the myriad of projects aimed at uplifting the plight of the marginalized peoples towards the realizationof their simple dreams.

Through the years, these youthful men of goodwill have gradually advanced in wisdom, carrying with them thelessons of yesteryears and imparting the ways of avoiding pitfalls to the new flock which entered its midst year after year. From junior executives these men have ascended the ladder of success in a wink of an eye learning the ropes from theirfellow Manila Rotarians who have been there and done that.

The influx of ideas which comes with the vibrance of youth is often a welcome sight and with the rapid pace of theindustrial rat race, one who relies on age old practices which have worked wonders in the past should now lend an openmind and embrace the challenges of innovation.

The will to succeed and the lure of material wealth has often dissuaded a bevy of young minds to pursue the noble

cause of service above self. which Rotary is known for. Fortunately, the Rotary Club of Manila, with its strong presence inthe archipelago, has attracted quite a following with young turfs who have set aside personal gains to pursue a meaningfullife dedicated to service.

And for the planning, implementation and management of our observance and celebration of the forthcomingCentenary of our Club on June 01, 2019, we are tapping the young members of our club, to compose the Rotary Club ofManila Centennial Committee from this Rotary Year to culminate in 2019.

No less than our very own Club Secretary and Director-elect for RY 2011-2012,Albert S. Alday, PhD, leads thepack, who, in their quiet and humble ways, have made a significant contribution to the glory that is the Rotary Club of Manila.Rtn Sec Alday leads the committee as its Chairman, with the following as Members: Manila Hotels Star Rotarian Ricky

Yap who hails from generations of taipans has made his presence felt despite his mild and gentle manner of congenialitythrough the hosting of various fellowships aimed at fostering closer ties between Manila Rotarians. PDSAA Ike Stranathan

made waves for our club when he together with Sec and DE A Alday promoted a project of the Rotary Club of Manila onANC (ABS-CBN News Channel) a few years ago. Rotarian Goran Aleks has been a gracious host to many an Alay-LakadFellowship of Manila Rotarians as well as luring District 3810s DISCON and DISTAS to the hotel he manages, the HotelSofitel. Star Rotarian Arnold Isidro, a practicing physician internist specializing in Nuclear Medicine, has often lent ahelping hand to the various medico-surgical missions of Rotary and has gone out of his comfort zone to involve himself as anactive Member of the SIDI Awards Committee. Star Rotarian Nilo Aventura Jr., md, has ably augmented the servicesextended by his father, Rotarian Nilo, in several medico-surgical missions undertaken by the Rotary Club of Manila.Rotarian Leo Virata is set to make himself available and commit himself to several projects of our club in the future.

The road to the centennial of our Rotary Club, the First in Asia, is just around the corner. Hence, it is but proper thatwe, the chronologically gifted wise men of the Club, turnover the reigns of responsibility to the younger generation guided bya Rotary Club of Manila Council of Advisers for the Centennial whose vast experience will make them mentors of worth

and excellence to these young blood who are set to bring our historic club to greater heights. Empowering the nextgeneration of Manila Rotarians will be our lasting legacy to the Filipino people who have been the beneficiaries of ourcontinuous search for a meaningful life and a life of purpose.

Cheers to the Rotary Club of Manila !!

PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND CHILD CARE

    FOODS TO AVOID

    Elias D. Adamos, M.D.

Improving your diet will improve the functioning of your heart and blood vessels. It lowersdown cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Avoiding unhealthy foods will also lower your blood pressure

    and prevent obesity.

If youre conscious with what you eat, the following foods should not be included in your regular diet.

Processed meatsThese should not be included in your diet. If you cant avoid abstaining from them, the most that you can have is 2

servings per week. Serving size should not exceed 3 ounces. These foods are preserved using salts, nitrites, or otherpreservatives. They include bacon, hot dogs, sausage, salami, longganisa, tosino, ham, deli chicken, and otherpreserved meats. Preserved and processed meats are bad for the heart because they contain high levels of salt andpreservatives.

Highly refined and processed grains and carbohydratesAvoid these foods. If you cant, the most that you can have is 7 servings per week. Take in just 1 ounce per

serving. Refined processed foods include sweets and sugars, low calorie breakfast cereals, white rice, and white bread.Analogous to these are whole grains (that includes Quaker Oats and unpolished rice) that lower cholesterol levelsand improve blood functioning. Processing removes the most healthful components found in whole grains. Processingalso destroys the natural structure of foods. Higher spikes in blood sugar result from too much intake of processedcarbohydrates. The adding of many unhealthy ingredients in processed carbohydrates, like sugar, sodium, and fats makethem much more unhealthy. Occasional treats of pie and white bread with your favorite spread is just okay as long as youdont include them as part of your regular diet.

Soft drinks and other sugary drinksIdeally there should be none in your diet. One 8-ounce serving per day is the maximum, if you cant really help

avoiding them. Sugary drinks include sports drinks and bottled tea drinks. A 12-ounce soft drink contains about 10teaspoons of table sugar. Diet soft drinks may contain zero sugar, but also, they dont have nutrients. Just like processedcarbohydrates they increase blood sugar levels and are not good for the heart. Regular intake of soft drinks makes yourtummy bigger. It increases your chance of weight gain and thus with regular soft drinks and sugary drinks obesity is not aremote possibility.
