Not all businesses need a website. Most UK businesses are very small.

Often they are owned and run by freelancers or contractors who can get work from agencies, other websites or personal contacts.

The smaller a business is the less likely they are to have a website. Only 50% of micro businesses (those with less than 9 employees) have a website

This creates a big potential opportunity for new startup businesses. Those startups who know how to market themselves online can easily attract new customers. A recent survey of successful small business leaders in the USA, conducted by Harvard Business Review, emphasised the importance of embracing the potential in digital. The entrepreneurs surveyed, who had all won the 2015 Regional Entrepreneur Of The Year award were identified to have:

cracked the code of digital transformation by putting digital technologies at the core of how their businesses operate [1].“

Paying for Digital Marketing

As well as paying for help with content and social media many new startups will pay to get additional website traffic using Google Adwordsand other PPC schemes.

Many startups like PPC advertising such as Google Adwords as it gives them a much more tangible response for their money. Many new businesses also reported that they liked having the ability to turn website traffic on and off as budget and workloads allow by adjusting their PPC campaigns.

However if not closely monitored and managed PPC can be an expensive way to gain website visits.

Although lots of people want to start a business very few entrepreneurs have the digital skills necessary to get their business online. This can lead them to spend more money than they need to and to become dependent on PPC traffic.

As 20% of the UK population are considering, or involved, in starting a business [1] it is important to make sure that digital marketing knowledge is reflected in the wider working population.

The recently published Digital Skills for the UK Economy Study recommended that a long-term approach was required to "ensure that digital skills are learned pervasively at all stages of education and training" and that "to this end, digital literacy should be seen as a core skill alongside English and maths"[1].
