No Bhajji, Yuvi in Test squad to Australia Mumbai: Out of form off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was on Saturday ignored while pacer Praveen Kumar and Rohit Sharma were recalled in India's 17-member Test squad for next month's gruelling tour of Australia. Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, who missed most part of the England tour and ongoing se- ries against the West Indies because of ham- string and ankle injury, has been provisional- ly named in the squad subject to passing the fit- ness test. Bengal wicketkeeper WriddhimanSaha was also named in the squad ahead of Parthiv Pa- tel but there were no major surprises in the team announced by the BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale after a meeting of the selection committee. Young leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, who fea- tured in India's squad for the ongoing series against West Indies, has been excluded from the team, to be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni with VirenderSehwag as his deputy. The selectors more or less retained the core of the team that has been doing duty in the on- going series against the West Indies which meant that Harbhajan continued to be in the wilderness. Though Harbhajan has a good track record against the Australians, the selectors reposed faith in the new spin combination of PragyanO- jha and R Ashwin, who have done exceeding- ly well in the ongoing series against the West In- dies. "Unfortunately, we cannot help it as the team selects itself. In Australia, you cannot have more than two spinners. PragyanOjha and Ashwin are doing an excellent job. Sometimes it becomes bad luck and sometimes people miss out. I'm sure everyone has their own time and space to come back," chief selector Kris Srikkanth told reporters after the meeting. Srikkanth said Zaheer will have to prove his match fitness before he gets the clearance to trav- el to Australia. "Zaheer will play in a couple of Ranji Trophy matches. And once he is fully match-fit and everything is fine, he will join the side. He may also go with the team as by the time (the team leaves) he would have played a couple of matches by that time," said Srikkanth. Yuvraj Singh, who was not considered for selection for the ODI series against the West Indies after he declared himself unfit, was also not included in the team which has five pacers, including Zaheer, and two specialist spinners. The batting heavyweights like Sachin Ten- dulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Gau- tamGambhir were expectedly named in the squad. Mumbai batsman AjinkyaRahane, who has made quite an impression in the few opportu- nities he has got, has been retained in the team while fit-again Rohit was recalled. The Test series against Australia will begin with the Boxing Day (December 26) Test in- Melbourne, followed by three other matches in Sydney (January 3-7), in Perth (January 13-17) and in Adelaide (January 24-28). Srikkanth said the selectors have chosen a balanced side and he hoped the team will do well in Australia. "We have chosen a very balanced side. We have taken everything into account, including fitness and Australian conditions. If you ask me today whether this team can beat Australia in Australia, I would say I'm very confident. We should beat Australia in Australia in a Test se- ries," he said. "Our batsman are in form, our bowlers are in form. And now we have all kinds of bowlers. We have fast bowlers, medium fast bowlers, we have swing bowlers, spinners -- left arm and off-spin," said Srikkanth. "So depending on the conditions there the team management will select the team on a match-to match basis. Let's hope that this side beats Australia in Australia, which has been a very cherished dream for every Indian cricketer, and every Indian fan," he said. Indian squad: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Virender- Sehwag (vice-Capt.), GautamGambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Vi- ratKohli, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, UmeshYa- dav, Varun Aaron, Rohit Sharma, PragyanOjha, Praveen Kumar, AjinkyaRahane, Wriddhi- manSaha, Zaheer Khan (provisional). Harish D L Bangalore Beat Bureau Bellary: Bellary Rural by-election inde- pendent candidate B Sriramulu and his fol- lowers, who are still in the BJP, have decid- ed to form a state-level party soon. Indicating this, Sriramulu’s sister and BJP MP from Bellary J Shanta today said that once the by-elections are over, a group of elected representatives from the BJP gov- ernment would walk away and form the re- gional party. Shanta was piqued that the BJP sus- pended her and five other elected represen- tatives from the party for supporting Srira- mulu, who has been contesting against BJP official candidate Gaadi Lingappa. Apart from Shanta, the BJP yesterday suspended Raichur MP Sanna Phakeerappa, MLAs G Somashekara Reddy, T H Suresh Babu and B Nagendra and MLC Mruthyun- jaya Jinaga. Party state president K S Esh- warappa sent a letter recom- mending their sus- pension to MP Sushma Swaraj, who is a member of the BJP parlia- mentary board. Sushma forward- ed the letter to board president L K Advani, who ac- cepted it immedi- ately. Shanta today said that the rul- ing party while showing uncharacteristic haste in sus- pending them, had not taken any action against a group of ministers, who stayed away from the public rallies during Advani’s Jana Chetana Yatra early recently. The consequence of Sriramulu and his fol- lowers leaving the party would be the col- lapse of the first BJP government in South In- dia. The former health minister has already formed a new party, Swabhimana Sriramu- lu, with fan as his party symbol. Sources said Sriramulu started working for the election soon after he resigned from the MLA’s post in September, though it was ac- cepted a month later. The strategy of Sriramulu’s group now is to wait for the release of their mentor Gali Ja- nardhana Reddy from the Chanchalaguda jail in Hyderabad and then announce the new party. Reddy has been behind bars for near- ly two months now for his alleged illegal min- ing activities. The Central Bureau of Inves- tigation arrested him on September 5 and the CBI special court has put him under judicial custody since then. The Sriramulu and his followers believe that the day is not too far for Reddy’s release, but the special court has repeatedly denied him bail. Pakistan stops NATO supplies after raid kills up to 25 troops Yakkaghund: NATO helicopters attacked a military checkpoint in northwest Pakistan on Saturday, killing up to 25 troops and prompting Pakistan to shut the vital supply route for NATO troops fighting in Afghanistan, Pakistani officials said. The attack comes as relations between the United States and Pakistan, its ally in the war on ter- ror, are already badly strained fol- lowing the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden by US special forces in a secret raid on the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad in May. Pakistan called that raid a flagrant viola- tion of its sovereignty. A Pakistani military spokesman confirmed Saturday's pre-dawn cross-border attack in the tribal region of Mohmand and said casualties had been re- ported, but gave no details. "NATO helicopters carried out an unprovoked and indiscrimi- nate firing on a Pakistani check post in Mohmand agency, casu- alties have been reported and de- tails are awaited," the spokesman said. Two military officials said that up to 25 Pakistani troops had been killed and 14 wounded in the attack on the Salala check post, about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the Afghan border. "We have heard about heavy casualties but can't provide you with the exact number of casu- alties of our troops as the post is far away, located in the mountains and is difficult to reach at the moment," a mili- tary spokesman in Peshawar said. The attack took place around 2am in the Baizai area of Mohmand, where Pakistani troops are fighting Taliban mili- tants. Another senior Pakistani mil- itary officer said efforts were un- der way to bring the bodies of the slain soldiers to Ghalanai, the headquarters of Mohmand trib- al region. "The latest attack by NATO forces on our post will have se- rious repercussions as they with- out any reasons attacked on our post and killed soldiers asleep," he said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to the media. About 40 Pakistani army troops were stationed at the out- post, military sources said. Two officers were reported among the dead. NATO supply trucks and fuel tankers bound for Afghanistan were stopped at Jamrud town in the Khyber tribal region near the city of Peshawar hours after the raid, officials said. "We have halted the supplies and some 40 tankers and trucks have been returned from the check post in Jamrud," Mu- tahirZeb, a senior government of- ficial, said. Bangalore:“The role in Dirty Pic-ture was the toughest I haveplayed till now,” said VidyaBalanduring her visit to the city yes-terday to promote the movie.

Actor VidyaBalan said, “I amplaying Silk, a dancing star ofthe 80’s who wears her heartand mind on her sleeve. However, the film is not based on the lifeof the famous actress Silk Smitha. The film is just about a dancing

star, but the name Silk was usedsince everyone associates SilkSmitha as a star of the 80s.”

“This was my toughest roletill date since the character ofSilk is a woman who is volatileabout her sexuality and is yetchildish. So striking the balancewas difficult.”

She also spoke about her fa-vorite songs and scenes from themovie.

The film “The Dirty Picture”is an interpretation of the char-acter types like Silk Smitha, fromthe southern film industry butis not a biopic of the actress aspeople believe it to be, she said.

The Dirty Picture is alreadyin the limelight and has grabbedthe audience’s attention, becauseof BappiLahiri’s catchy number“Ooh La La”.

Indian IT cos among worldʼslowest‑paying employersIndia Inc is among the world’s lowest

paying employers in the IT space, with their mid-to- senior level staff

getting an average salary of $36,120(about Rs 18.5 lakh) per annum – lessthan one-fourth of the IT pay packageat globally top-paying Swiss compa-nies.

The IT sector salaries are highest inthe world in Switzerland at an averageof $167,890 (about Rs 87 lakh) per an-num, as per a study titled ‘World wideIT Salary 2011’.

The study, conducted by global re-cruitment service provider MyHiring-Club.com, found that India is rankedseventh on a list of the 10 worst IT pay-masters globally.

On the other hand, Switzerland standsat the top spot among the top-payingnations in the IT sector.

The study took into account the av-erage salaries for people with six andmore years of experience for the Indianand other companies.

The report compared the total annualcash compensation and total remuner-ation information for IT staff in morethan 6,000 companies across 41 differentcountries and found that employers inwestern Europe are the best paymas-ters.

It also found that compensation indeveloped countries focus more on vari-able factors, such as bonus schemes,to attract staff.

At the same time, the emphasis re-mains on cash compensation in thelower-paying countries.

“The impact of outsourcing and off-shoring on IT roles in North Americaand Western Europe helps explain thepattern of global pay. Lower-level rolesare being moved to regions where talentis cheaper,” MyHiringClub.com CEORajesh Kumar said.

“India continues to be amongst theleading destinations for IT development, given its cost advantage. However, salaryinflation and talent shortage couldemerge as major challenges in main-taining this position in future,” headded.

IT managers in India, however, farebetter than their peers in Vietnam, Bul-garia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailandand Malaysia, where the average annualsalaries were even lower at $28,940,$32,560, $32,980, $33,000 and $35,870,respectively.

Also, large pay gaps exist betweenthe junior and senior career streams inIndia, Indonesia, Chile, Brazil and Viet-nam, the survey said.

Among the best IT salaries paying countries, Switzerland was followed by Belgium at the second spot with an average annual salary of $1,42,570.

Denmark came third in the best-paidlist with average IT sector salary of$1,32,430, followed by the UK and the US in the to-five, with average packages of $1,26,570 and $1,21,460 re-spectively.

Others on the top-ten included Ire-land, Canada, Germany, Australia andHong Kong.

Enough evidence given toPak on 26/11: Krishna

New Delhi: Three years after Mumbai’s 26/11terror attack, external affairs minister SMKrishna has sent out a tough message, urging Pakistan to act against the perpe-trators of the attack. “I call upon Pakistanto bring the perpetrators and conspiratorsof this crime to speedy justice,” he said onSaturday.

Speaking on the fight against terror, hesaid, “There cannot be a selective fightagainst terrorism.”

He also said that the use of terrorism asan instrument of state policy can be self-destructive. “Issues have to be resolvedthrough dialogue,” he said.

He pressed on the fact that Pakistan needsto act decisively, claiming that the evidenceprovided by the Home Ministry is sufficientfor any normal civilian court to prosecutethe perpetrators of the crime.

This came a day after Pakistan asked

India to provide ‘credible evidence’ againstthose accused in the 2008 Mumbai terrorattacks.

He also expressed hope that the US willextend help in probing the 26/11 terrorattacks. “ Our agencies were given access tointerrogate David Headley. If there are anyadditional inputs that we would like to have,I am sure US, a friendly country to us, willcooperate with us,” he said.

Earlier, on Friday Pakistan Interior MinisterRehman Malik said, “Pakistan took actionagainst Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mo-hammad Saeed and others accused of in-volvement in the Mumbai attack on thebasis of evidence provided by India but thesuspects were released because the infor-mation given by New Delhi was vague andinsufficient.”

Mumbai was under siege for almost threedays that left 170 people dead.

Pak stops NATO supplies after attackAnother official said the supplies had

been stopped for security reasons.Pakistan is a vital land route for 49 percent

of NATO’s supplies to its troops inAfghanistan, a NATO spokesman said.

A spokesman for the NATO-led Interna-tional Security Assistance Force in Kabulsaid the coalition there was aware of “anincident” and was gathering more informa-tion.

The incident occurred a day after US Gen-eral John Allen met Pakistani Army Chief ofArmy Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayanito discuss border control and enhanced co-operation.

The Afghanistan-Pakistan border is often

poorly marked, and differs between mapsby up to five miles in some places.

A similar incident on Sept 30, 2009, whichkilled two Pakistani troops, led to the closureof one of NATO’s supply routes throughPakistan for 10 days.

NATO apologised for that incident, whichit said happened when NATO gunships mis-took warning shots by the Pakistani forcesfor a militant attack.

The attack is expected to further worsenUS-Pakistan relations, already at one oftheir lowest points in history, following atumultuous year that saw the bin Ladenraid, the jailing of a CIA contractor, and USaccusations that Pakistan backed a militant

attack on the US Embassy in Kabul. An increase in US drone strikes on mili-

tants in the last few years has also irritatedIslamabad, which says the campaign killsmore Pakistani civilians in the border areathan activists. Washington disputes that, but declines to discuss the drone campaignin detail.

“This is an attack on Pakistan’s territorialsovereignty,” said Masood Kasur, the gov-ernor of Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

“Such cross-border attacks cannot be tol-erated any more. The government will takeup this matter at the highest level and itwill be investigated.”

Paes‑Bhupathi enter semis at Tour finalsLondon: India's Leander Paes and Ma-hesh Bhupathi have entered the semi-finals of the Barclays ATP World Tourfinals doubles, defeating top seeds andthree-time winners the Bryan twins,Bob and Mike, 6-4, 6-2.

Had the Bryans - who had alreadyqualified after winning the first tworound-robin matches - beat Paes andBhupathi in straight sets, then seventhseeds Austrian Jurgen Melzer and hisGerman partner Philipp Petzschnerwould have qualified for the semifinals.

The Indians will face Poland's MariuszFyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski inthe semifinals on Saturday.

In the other semifinal, the Bryanbrothers play Max Mirnyi of Belarusand Canadian Daniel Nestor, whotopped Group B beating among othersIndia's Rohan Bopanna and his Pak-istani partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, who have played in the Tour finals forthe first time.

Earlier in the day, Melzer and Pet-zschner beat sixth seeds Swede Robert

Lindstedt and Romanian Horia Tecau6-3, 6-4.

It was an unexpectedly easy victoryfor the fourth-seeded Indians over theWorld No 1 pair at Arena O2 here on

Friday and the victory gave them thetop spot in Group A with two victoriesand one defeat. Bryans finished second.

Bhupathi and Paes - losing finaliststo Americans Rick Leach and Jonathan

Stark in 1997, to another American pairSebastien Lareau and Alex O'Brien in1999 and to American Daniel Johnsonand South African Piet Norval in 2000- won the match in a shade less than

an hour. Bhupathi and Paes, who have decided

to split after this tournament, producedtheir best tennis when it mattered themost. The Indians beat the Bryans whenthey last met at the Cincinnati Mastersearlier in the year, had an early breakand that was enough for them to takethe first set. The Bryan brothers, whohave just finished at the top of the dou-bles rankings for a record seventh timein nine years, were sluggish and strug-gled to stay in the hunt.

Another quick break and the matchwas gone for the Americans.

The security personnel guard-ing the lone surviving Pakistanigunman at the high-securityArthur Road jail, had not in-formed him anything about thecompletion of three years of theMumbai terror attacks, a seniorjail official told PTI on Satur-day.

"His day began like any otherday. He had breakfast with ba-nana, milk and Poha (made ofpuffed rice flakes & potatoes)this morning and lunch in theafternoon. Going by his mentalstatus, we do not think we shouldtalk to him or inform him aboutthe third anniversary of 26/11,"the official said.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Po-lice (ITBP) men guarding thehigh-profile prisoner, who is con-fined in a bomb proof egg shapedcell, also kept mum about theanniversary, he said.

"Our priority is to protectKasab in the jail. Going by theserious nature of their job, whyany security man closely guard-ing him would strike a conver-sation with him on the attacksor anniversary?" the officialasked.

Kasab, the sole terrorist caughtalive during the terror attacks, and convicted for the three-dayterror siege in November 2008,had on July 28 this year writtena letter to the Supreme Courtchallenging his conviction anddeath sentence.
