und Heidelberg auf baden-württembergischer Seite. Karlsruhe und die Region Mittlerer Oberrhein, Freiburg im Breisgau und Ulm sind weitere Agglomerationen. Insgesamt produzieren in den genannten Regionen ein Drittel der Einwohner des Landes fast die Hälfte der Produktion Baden-Württembergs.
Regional verteilen sich die Unternehmen auf 12 Regionen mit insgesamt 28 thematischen Clustern, die vom Automotive-Cluster in fast allen Regionen über den Cluster der Kreativwirtschaft – in der immerhin fast 218.000 Erwerbstätige arbeiteten und ca. 30.000 Unternehmen 2012 fast 22 Mrd. € umsetzten – bis hin zur Wald- und Holzwirtschaft in den Regionen des Schwarzwaldes und am Oberrhein reichen. Maßgeblich beteiligt am Erfolgsmodell Baden-Württemberg ist die Industrie. In Baden-Württemberg hat das produzierende Gewerbe den höchsten Anteil am BIP im Vergleich zu allen anderen deutschen Bundesländern. Die wichtigsten Industriebranchen des Landes sind der Maschinenbau, der Fahrzeugbau und die Herstellung von Metallerzeugnissen sowie die Textilindustrie. 2013 waren etwa 25 % der Beschäftigten, d.h. mehr als eine Millionen Menschen, in den Branchen Pharma
und Chemie, Kunststoffherstellung, Metallerzeugung und -verarbeitung, Herstellung von elektrischen und elektronischen Geräten, dem Maschinenbau und nicht zuletzt dem Automobil- und Fahrzeugbau tätig. In Deutschland lag dieser Anteil zum gleichen Zeitpunkt bei lediglich etwa 17 %. Besonders dynamisch haben sich nach einer Studie der Prognos AG die IT- und Softwarebranche, der Gesundheits- und Sozialbereich sowie die unternehmensnahen Dienstleistungen entwickelt. Diese Entwicklung macht deutlich, dass trotz der Dominanz der Industrie, der Strukturwandel hin zu einer technologisch orientierten Dienstleistungsgesellschaft in Baden-Württemberg voranschreitet.
Die Unternehmensstruktur in Baden-Württemberg ist geprägt von zahlreichen börsennotierten Groß-konzernen. So haben die drei DAX-Unternehmen SAP (Walldorf bei Heidelberg), HeidelbergCement und Daimler sowie sechs Unternehmen des MDAX so z.B. der Pharmagroßhändler Celesio, der Ingenieur- und Industrieservicekonzern Bilfinger oder der Automobilzulieferer Dürr ihren Hauptsitz in Baden-Württemberg. Diese neun Unternehmen beschäftigen allein etwa eine halbe Million Menschen und generieren etwa 186 Mrd. € Jahresumsatz – mehr als das BIP von Finnland. Darüber hinaus haben zahlreiche Unternehmen von Weltrang, die nicht börsennotiert sind, ihren Sitz in Baden-Württemberg. Allen voran der internationale Unternehmensriese Robert Bosch GmbH aus Stuttgart, der nicht nur einer der größten Automobilzulieferer der Welt ist, sondern auch in den Segmenten Haustechnik, Industrietechnik, Software und im Gesundheitsbereich tätig ist.
Viele dieser Unternehmen mit Sitz im Südwesten sind als so genannte Hidden Champions bekannt. Sie werden definiert als meist mittelständische Unternehmen, die es geschafft haben, Marken und Produkte zu etablieren, mit denen sie weltweit bekannt und in ihrem Segment Weltmarktführer geworden sind.
