The main purposes of this book are: to preserve the research, to assist any unknown cousins who may be researching these families, and to ask readers for assistance in providing missing data. INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this book is to document and share with others the research I have completed on some of the ancestors of my grandmother Ethel Anna Rogers of Black Rock who married Frank Benjamin Lucas in 1909. Before 1874 Black Rock was part of Fairfield and after that time it became part of Bridgeport. Ethel and Frank went to the same one room schoolhouse in Black Rock and undoubtedly met there. Ethel had a difficult family life as a girl, her father Charles Henry Rogers (A.K.A. Michael Jr.) was an alcoholic and her mother Hattie Spencer died in 1905 at age 43 of Chronic Parenchymatous Nephritis and Uremia (Kidney Disease). After their mother died, Ethel’s younger siblings Charles, Hattie, and Walter were sent to the Bridgeport Protestant Orphan Asylum and as teenagers, she, her brother Chester and sister Ida petitioned the Probate Court to appoint the Bridgeport Trust Co. as their guardian. A portion of a newspaper article (circa May 1905) explains the situation: “The family is one residing at Black Rock where they have been for many years. The mother died some two months ago, leaving property to the children, enough to support and care for them. The father is still alive but does little for their support. He is a blacksmith by trade. He has certain notions regarding how they should be brought up that are not agreeable to the children. Accordingly they petitioned the probate court through Attorney R.H. Gould for the appointment of the Bridgeport Trust Co. as their guardian.” Ethel married Frank Lucas 4 years after her mother died and they moved to Waterbury for a short time before returning to Black Rock. Their first son Alvin died as an infant at Waterbury. Over the years they lived at 5 Fox Street, 30 Bennett St. and 75 Clarkson at Black Rock. Frank was the son of James Lewis (J. L.) Lucas and Charlotte Drew who lived at 3 Fox Street in Black Rock. The Lucas family was originally from Carver, Mass. but Frank and his brother Chester were born at Saugus and Lynn, Mass. while the family lived in the area. JL wrote a biography where he states that he had a job at The General Electric Co in Lynn. At Black Rock JL and Frank founded J. L. Lucas & Son around 1905 which was a successful Machine Tool Dealership that remained in business for over 60 years. A company of that name still exists in Waterbury as of 2005. During WW1, Frank left Connecticut to serve in the U.S. Ambulance Corps in France from August 1918 to April 1919. In these years of 1915 through the 1920’s the Lucas family had a summer cottage they called Beacon at Short Beach in Stratford where the families of Frank, Chester and JL would spend summer vacation. JL eventually spent a lot of time at Beacon after his wife died in 1923 until the time he moved to Miami, FL where he died in 1944. Frank’s only sibling Chester Lewis Lucas married Ella Sophia Barnes and the family moved to Syracuse, NY where Chester died of appendicitis in 1921 at age 40. Chester’s son Lewis was employed at J. L. Lucas for many years and lived at Black Rock. Chester also had a son Chester Laurice and a daughter Isabell (married name Butler). Ethel’s father Charles Henry Rogers died in 1914 after being struck by a car at the corner of State St. and Park Ave in Bridgeport. He was born Michael Rogers near Pittstown, NY, the son of Immigrants from County Clare Ireland. The newspaper reported he was formerly a horse trainer and jockey known as “Yankee Rogers” for some time during the 1890’s. It is possible that his brother John W. Rogers is in fact the same horse trainer who was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame, Saratoga Springs, NY in 1955. That John W. was a well known horse trainer from 1880 – 1907 and trained the horse Lamplighter who won many races from 1891 to 1895. Lamplighter also finished 2

nd in the Brooklyn Handicap in 1893. It is possible Charles worked

closely with his brother or perhaps even some of his brother’s popularity and achievements were incorrectly attributed to him. This requires further investigation. Eventually Frank and Ethel had a new home built in the 1930’s on Toilsome Hill Rd. in Fairfield where they lived comfortably for the rest of their lives. Ethel died on Easter of 1965 of Uremia (Kidney Disease). Frank died in 1967. Frank and Ethel had 3 children: Virginia Drew Lucas (m Joseph Thomson) of Glendale, CA and Spokane, WA, Austin Dudley Lucas (m Laura Wilbur & Frances ?) of Fairfield, Ct, Delray and Boynton Beach, FL ; and Chester Alison Lucas (m Joyce White) of Fairfield, Bethany and Hamden, CT. Frank and Ethel had 9 grandchildren: Nancy Drew Lucas (Atherton), Joan Spencer Lucas, Brett Thomson, Pamela Thomson (Morad), Rogers Thomson, Heather Thomson (Caverly), Joanne Lucas (Bracewell), James L. Lucas and Jonathan D. Lucas. I hope you will find this book useful. J.L.L.

ELBERT BANKS OF 267 ELLSWORTH ST. BLACK ROCK

Elbert Banks appears to be the first owner of the house built around 1850 at 267 Ellsworth St. at Black Rock, originally known as number 27 Church St. before the street name was changed to Ellsworth. (Ref: Lathrop p 158). He was the son of Hyatt Banks and Elizabeth Wakeman. The Banks and Wakeman families trace back to the earliest settlers of Greenfield Hill in Fairfield. Hyatt, his father Gershom Banks Sr and Elizabeth’s father Ebenezer Wakeman were Minute Men in the Revolutionary War; (Ref: DAR Patriot Index). In the 1850 Census of Black Rock Elbert is age 60 and listed as a farmer with his wife Polly (Merwin) age 53 and his daughter Maria (A.K.A. Sarah Maria) age 23. The value of the real estate is listed as $1000.00. Elbert Banks is on the first subscription list of Black Rock Congregational Church which was built in 1849 at the corner of Church (now Ellsworth) and Bartram (Ref: Justinius; Page 115). Polly Merwin died in 1864 and Elbert Banks died in 1873 and they are buried at Mountain Grove Cemetery. They may have originally been buried at the Church plot at the corner of State & Park and moved to Mtn. Grove (Ref: Note written by Frank Lucas). Polly was the daughter of Meeker Merwin and Sarah Hull who descend from the early Greenfield Hill Fairfield families of Merwin, Meeker and Hull.

CYRUS SPENCER OF PARKMAN, ME, DAMARISCOTTA, ME & BLACK ROCK, CT On Nov 14, 1853 (Sarah) Maria Banks, daughter of Elbert and Polly married Cyrus P. Spencer of Damariscotta, Maine at Black Rock Congregational Church and took ownership of 267 Ellsworth St. the same year.(Ref: Justinius p 63). Cyrus was probably born in Parkman, ME. where he lived in 1850 with his parents Samuel and Jerusha (Packard). (Ref: 1850 census) shortly before moving to Damariscotta, ME. There is no record of any Spencer families in or near Damariscotta in the early 1800’s. Cyrus became a 3

rd order Freemason at Alna Lodge Number 43 at Damariscotta, ME. on May 28, 1851 (Ref:

Original Certificate in possession of Joan Lucas Spencer and per Mason’s records at Portland, ME). Cyrus joined St. John’s Masonic Lodge #3 at Black Rock on Aug 17, 1864. Since Cyrus was a ship’s carpenter, it is likely he was at Damariscotta to learn his trade since that town was well known for it’s shipbuilding. Black Rock was also a thriving shipbuilding center between 1845 and 1865 (Ref: Brilvitch). His death record offers no information on his place of birth but some records say Maine (Ref: Mountain Grove Cemetery Records and 1870 Black Rock Census) and the 1860 Census says his birthplace was Conn. James and Louisa Spencer listed in Damariscotta in the 1850 census are undoubtedly his brother and sister listed as follows: James Spencer, Farmer Ae 19y (b 1831) in Family of Daniel Day (Ref: 1850 US Census Damariscotta) and Louisa Spencer, Ae 22y (b 1828) in Family of John Little (Ref: 1850 US Census Damariscotta) (Ref: Vol 1 Births Deaths Maine Hist Soc 1951) The Parkman, ME 1850 census shows Cyrus has a brother James and sister Louisa of the same age as those in Damariscotta. This Cyrus is not Sgt Cyrus Spencer who enlisted in the Co. A Volunteer Infantry at Haddam, CT Aug 3, 1862 during the Civil War. That Cyrus Spencer died Aug 13, 1863 (Ref: Records of Ct men in the War of the Rebellion, Page 777). It is possible that Cyrus knew Capt. William Hall who moved from Maine and bought all four shipyards at Black Rock in 1856. (Ref: Brilvitch; p 15). In the 1860 US census, Elbert and Polly still lived at the house with Cyrus P. Spencer ae 34 Ship Carpenter, (this census incorrectly says Cyrus was born in Connecticut), Maria ae 34, Ida ae 5 and Frank ae 2. Polly died in 1864 and in the 1870 census it appears that Elbert no longer lived at 267 Ellsworth. Elbert died at age 82 in 1873. In 1874 Cyrus Spencer died at age 49 leaving the widow (Maria) Sarah Banks Spencer as owner of the house until 1888 (Ref: Justinius; p 63) when her daughter Hattie was the owner. Per the 1860 census and an 1867 map of Black Rock, Morris Gould who was also a Ship Carpenter lived next door to 267 Ellsworth . (Ref: Justinius; p 100,). Cyrus and Sarah had 4 children: Ida F (died 1881 at age 27)., Frank M. m Annie Burnett, Hattie Maria, and Annie M. m Thomas Hegeman. Sarah Banks Spencer died May 8, 1891. Cyrus Spencer purchased Lot 35 in Section 6 of Mountain Grove Cemetery where many of his descendants are buried along with his In Laws Elbert Banks and Polly Merwin. Mountain Grove Cemetery notes of Frank Lucas for Lot 35 section 6 state: “Early burials originated from church plot – State (St.) and Park (Ave) – moved to Mt. Grove!” Perpetual Care since 1946 paid by FBL” Maybe this means that Polly Merwin and Elbert Banks were moved to Mountain Grove. (See references page 26)

MICHAEL ROGERS OF PITTSTOWN, NY A.K.A. CHARLES HENRY ROGERS OF BLACK ROCK

Hattie Spencer married Charles Henry Rogers at Black Rock Congregational Church on August 8, 1883. In the 1885 Bridgeport Directory Charles H Rogers is listed as a Peddler boarding on Church St (now Ellsworth) undoubtedly living with his wife at the home of his mother in law Sarah Banks the widow of Cyrus Spencer. Hattie Spencer Rogers took possession of 267 Ellsworth in 1888. Charles H. Rogers was born Michael Rogers Sept 20, 1852 in Pittstown, Rensselaer County, NY. (Ref 1,2,3, & 4) the son of Michael Rogers and Mary Mehan (daughter of John Mehan and Kate ?) who were immigrants from Ireland, allegedly County Clare (Ref 6). Charles Henry was not in Bridgeport until after the 1880 census. It is assumed his birth date is Sept 20 based on his death record and the place Pittstown and year 1852 is deduced from the Pittstown census records (Ref 1, 2, & 7). The information on his death record has the birth year 1862 and birth place Rutland, VT and the 1900 U.S. census has 1858 for the birth year and VT for birthplace. It is possible he adjusted the data some time during his life. It is also a mystery why he changed his name to Charles Henry. It is noted that the data on his death record was provided by his daughter Ida. Michael Rogers Sr. was naturalized after the 1855 census and before the 1865 census. (Ref 1 & 7) and he died Jan 1866 (Ref 6). A search by the author for the Naturalization record of Michael Sr. at the Troy County Clerks Record Office was unsuccessful. It appears that Michael Jr. moved out of Pittstown before the 1870 census (Ref 10) . Perhaps this is when he lived at Rutland, VT (further investigation required). Michael’s sister Catherine (Kate) was born in Ireland according to Census records and she married William Tallent abt 1864 and was living in Pittstown when her mother Mary Mehan Rogers died on Sept 15,1893 (Ref 3 & 8). His brother William died at age 24 on Mar 9, 1882 (Ref 9). There was also a brother John W. Rogers of Fordham, NYC who received the entire estate in his mother’s will (Ref 3). He allegedly died in 1936 and is buried in North Troy (Ref 6). Charles Henry Rogers and Hattie Spencer had 6 children: Chester Spencer m Anna Reiner, Ida Francis m Harry Zibell, Ethel Anna m Frank B. Lucas, Charles Henry A.K.A. Charles Horrocks (adopted by Horrocks family) m Julia Reimer, Hattie Viola m Frank Grimley and ? Rink, and Walter Thomas who were all born in CT except Chester Spencer who was born June 17, 1884 in New York (Ref 11). This seems to indicate that Charles and Hattie lived in New York for a short time between 1883 when they were married and 1885 when CH is listed in the Bridgeport directory. Charles Henry Jr. was adopted by a family named Horrocks and he died Jul 1985 in Teaneck, NJ (Ref 12). Charles Henry Rogers died in 1914 after being struck by a car at the corner of State St. and Park Ave in Bridgeport. YANKEE ROGERS – PEDDLER, JOCKEY, HORSETRAINER, BLACKSMITH, VETERINARY SURGEON From the newspaper reports following Charles Henry Roger’s death we learn he was formerly a horse trainer and jockey known as “Yankee Rogers” for some time during the 1890’s and possibly before that (See Article 2 in the Appendix). As a jockey he would have been small in stature weighing no more than about 120 to 130 Lbs. It is possible that his brother John W. Rogers of Fordham, NY City is in fact the same horse trainer who was inducted into the National Museum of Racing (NMR) Hall of Fame, Saratoga Springs, NY in 1955. This John W. Rogers was a well known horse trainer from 1880 – 1907 and trained the horse Lamplighter who won many races from 1891 to 1895. Lamplighter also finished 2

nd in the

Brooklyn Handicap in 1893. Fordham New York City was near Jerome Park race track (1866 to 1889) where the Belmont Stakes Horse Race was first run. In 1890 the Belmont Stakes was moved to Morris Park (also near Fordham) and was run there until Belmont Park opened in 1905. It is possible Charles worked closely with his brother in horse racing. Unfortunately records of the NMR indicate John W. Rogers was from Louisiana, not New York and some searches at NMR and Keeneland Library (Keeneland.com) yield no record of Charles Henry Rogers or Yankee Rogers. This requires further investigation. C.H. Roger’s other occupations were Peddler (1885 Bridgeport Directory), Blacksmith (Newspaper and 1905 directory) and Veterinary Surgeon (1900 Census). ARTICLE REGARDING THE CHILDREN OF WIDOWER CHARLES H. ROGERS Approx May 28, 1905 BRIDGEPORT TRUST CO. GUARDIAN OF SIX NEGLECTED MINOR CHILDREN. Allegations That Father of Black Rock Family Has Not Taken Proper Care of Them Basis of Ground for Application -Complaint Withdrawn When Father Signs Agreement to Guardian. Judge of Probate E. P. Nobbs this morning appointed the Bridgeport Trust Co. as the guardian of the persons and Property of the six minor children of Charles H. and the late Hattie S. Rogers. Behind this fact lies an interesting story. The family is one residing at Black Rock where they have been for many years. The mother died some two months ago, leaving property to the children, enough to support and care for them. The father is still alive but does little for their support. He is a blacksmith by trade. He has certain notions regarding how they should be brought up that are not agreeable to the children. Accordingly they petitioned the probate court through Attorney R.H. Gould for the appointment of the Bridgeport Trust Co. as their guardian. Three of the children , Chester S., Ida F. and Ethel, are old enough to do this as they are all above 14 years of age. The three others , Charles, Hattie, and Walter are much smaller and are now in the Bridgeport Protestant Orphan Asylum. In the petition it was set up simply the fact that their father was not a fit person to be entrusted with their care or property. When the matter came up in court this morning the father retained Attorney V. R. C. Giddings as his counsel. He opposed the selection of the trust company and wanted Charles B. Fancher instead. The court asked some of the friends of the children whom they thought would be the more suitable and they endorsed the selection made by the children. The father claimed in court that he was trying to keep his children home nights and that they disobeyed him and stayed out until late. He also said they have been stolen away from him and that he intended to instigate an action for kidnapping as soon as he learned who had done it. The two elder girls are decidedly attractive looking and were neatly dressed and well behaved. It is said that one of them with the son has been the mainstay of the family for some time. The three younger children will probably be kept at the orphan asylum. The estate left by their mother to them while small is sufficient to provide for the support of the six children assisted by their own efforts. Bridgeport Post Wednesday Evening March 4, 1914 Coroner Phelan Probes Death of Charles Rogers Francis Derby is Held on Manslaughter - Bond May Be Increased Hearing is Continued Pending Investigation Operator of Car Declares He Did Not Attempt to Escape After Accident As soon as he is able to get witnesses County Coroner J. J. Phelan wil begin his investigation into the death of Charles H. Rogers, known as "Yankee" Rogers, the horse trainer, who was killed at the corner of State Street and Park Avenue last night by an automobile driven by Francis Derby. The police and detectives are looking up witnesses to the accident. The coroner is anxious that persons who were witnesses to the accident communicate with him, so that they could be called. Was Crossing Street Charles H. Rogers, the deceased had been quite a well known horse trainer in years gone by, and had an extensive aquaintance among horsemen in the country. Of late years he had been working as a blacksmith and rooming in Colorado Avenue, but quite recently he has been working about various cafes in the West End. He was crossing State Street about 7 o'clock last night, when he was run into and killed instantly by an automobile. The ambulance was rushed to the scene of the accident, but Rogers was dead. The body was taken to the morgue at Cullinan & Mullins where it was later examined by Medical Examiner S. M. Garlick. The body was pretty well crushed. There was a fracture of the skull, the right shoulder and both collar bones were broken. The ribs on the left side were crushed in. Dr. Garlick said that death was instantaneous. Bond May Be Increased Francis Derby who was driving the automobile, was taken to police headquarters by Patrolman Fred Feeley, and the charge of man- (Typo in the newspaper article) He was released on a bond of $1000 furnished by Harold H. Hamilton, president of the Whiting Manufacturing company. Derby is employed by the company. Derby was before the city court this morning, and was represented by Attorney James A. Marr, and his case was continued till March 24 in bonds of $1000. Judge Coughlin told the accused and counsel that in the event of the coroner finding him criminally responsible, that he would call in the accused and increase the bond to $5000. Derby Makes Statement Mr. Derby made a statement to the police after he was arrested, to the effect when he was turning into Park Avenue from State St. he saw Rogers in his path. He applied his brake and stopped the car, and at the same time Mr. Rogers stopped also. Supposing that Mr. Rogers stopped to allow him to go by he started his machine forward and just as he did so Mr. Rogers was struck. He said that he could not avoid hitting him after Mr. Rogers started to walk across the street. T.E.J.Murphy of No. 135 Clinton avenue who was a witness to the accident, made a

statement to the police that Derby was driving his machine at a 15 mile an hour rate and that came very near being struck himself He did not see the machine Stop at all. After the automobile hit Rogers it stopped 15 feet away. He heard Mr. Derby ask for assistance to lift the body in his machine, and afterwards he saw Mr.Derby jump in his car, and he thought that he was going to run away, and he told Officer Feeley, who jumped on the running board. Mr. Derby denies that he was at- tempting to get away. He said that when he found that the man was dead he said that he intended to turn around to go to police headquarters. Derby was operating the automo- bile that ran into and killed Motor cycle Officer Frank A. Lowe on the afternoon of August 8, 1912,but was exonerated from all blame by Acting Coroner H· C. Stevenson who made a full investigation. The coroner found that Officer Lowe was running easterly in Barnum avenue at an excessive rate of speed at 50 miles an hour, and that when Mr. Derby was passing Barmum avenue at Bishop avenue, the officer and his machine crashed into tile auto- mobile that Mr. Derby was driving. Col. Elmer Havens and others were witnesses. Mr. Rogers, the victim of last night's accident leaves one daughter Ida a clerk at the American Graphophone company, No. 259 Ellsworth street, Black Rock. There is an assumption that at the time he was Struck Mr. Rogers was under the influence of drink. An empty whiskey bottle was found in one of his pockets.

Unknown Paper Trainer Killed By Automobile Coroner Phelan will Investigate Responsibility of Chauffer Derby Charles H. Rogers, a local celebrity residing in Black Rock, who claimed to have trained the famous running horse “Lamplighter” when it won the Brooklyn Handicap, , was struck and killed by an automobile driven by Francis E. Derby at State Street and Park avenue last night. In the city court today Derby was arraigned on a charge of manslaughter.. Rogers lived in Black Rock for many years. The family home was in Brewster Street. In his youth he was a famous jockey and was known as “Yankee Rogers”. Riding fast horses he won many running races in the days when race tracks flourished in the United States. He claimed that he had trained the famous horse “Lamplighter” the horse that won the Brooklyn Handicap about 20 years ago at odds of 100 to 1. Rogers at that time told friends in Bridgeport that the horse was due to win. Pool rooms were conducted then as openly as saloons are now. Only one Bridgeport man was game enough to take Roger’s tip. He placed a $10 bill on Lamplighter. The race track odds were 100 to 1, but the pool room paid a little smaller percentage. Nevertheless the Bridgeport “plunger” won $750. While he lived in Black Rock, Rogers made a living from his vegetable garden, and pieced out his income by renting saddles for horses for the parades, which were so popular in the old days. Before the days of automobiles all the residents of Black Rock kept horses and Rogers, while not a veterinary surgeon, was in much demand when the family horse or cow of the neighbors was ill.

The Pension File of James Dunham R3131 - from Heritage Quest online Pension was rejected because service was less than 6 months United States of America Maine District SS At a special District court of the United States begun and holden at Minot within and for said district, on the fourteenth day of August A.D. eighteen hundred and thirty two, before the Honorable ASHUR WARE, Judge of the said court. On this fourteenth day of August aforesaid, personally appeared in open court before said district judge James Dunham a resident of Hebron in the county of Oxford in said Maine District, aged seventy eight years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of congress passed June 7th, 1832. That he the said James Dunham first entered the service of the state as a minute man in the town of Plympton in the county of Plymouth in the state of Massachusetts in the regiment commanded by Col. (Theophilus) Cotton, that the company to which he belonged was commanded by Capt. John Bridgham of Plympton aforesaid. That the company was organized on the 9th day of Feb. 1775. That he frequently met with his class or division of the company once or twice a week for military drill for the term of three months during which three months he was called out to march to Plymouth to stop the proceedings of the Court that was about to commence its session then under the colonial Laws, That all the proceedings of the court were stopped, that the regiment was formed in front of the Court House that while the regiment remained there Dr. Freeman of Sandwich delivered an address to them and exhorted them to resist the oppression of British Laws. That soon after this he was called out by the Col. and again went to Plymouth and remained there two days, that soon after was the alarm at the news of the Lexington Battle. That he was called with the regiment to march to Marshfield for the purpose of taking the British Soldiers that were stationed at the house of Roy Thomas Esq who was a tory and had fled to Boston and that he was on said expedition 4 or 5 days. That he served said three months as a sergeant. That he the said Dunham again enlsited in the service of the United States some time in the first of the summer of 1776 at

A Brief History of the Town of Hebron, Maine

(from http://www.rootsweb.com/~mechebro/hebron.htm) March 7, 1777, the General Court of Massachusetts passed a resolution granting to Alexander Shepard "the unappropriated lands lying in the county of Cumberland in the Province of Maine, . . ." on the condition that Shepard "shall deliver in to this Court to their acceptance, on or before the last day od September next, an accurate map of all the late Province of Maine, . . ." Shepard apparantly satisfied the General Court and he was granted. June 24, 1779, a parcel of land in the Oxford Hills of Maine which became known as Shepardsfield. The settlers of Shepardsfield Plantation petitioned the General Court to incorporate the town of Hebron, and the incorporation was confirmed March 6, 1792. By 1828 the town had grown substantially and there was strong feeling that the western part of Hebron and the eastern part were no longer compatible for the conduct of town business. Consequently a petition was sent the the Senate anf House of Representatives of Maine requesting a division of the town and the incorporation of the Town of Oxford. The Maine Legislature approved "An Act To Incorporate The Town of Oxford" February 27th, 1829. A Brief History of the Town of Oxford, ME (http://www.rootsweb.com/~mecoxfor/index.htm) The town of Oxford was settled in 1774 and was originally called Shepardsfield Plantation, after its owner, Alexander Shepard, Jr. of Newton. After Mr. Shepard's death, a large portion of the original grant was sold to Andrew Craigie, apothecary general of the Revolutionary War. Craige's home in Cambridge was the old Vassal house, which served as the headquarters of Washington during the siege of Boston and later was the home of the poet Longfellow. Craige was an ambitious man and encouraged both agriculture and manufacturing on his lands. He dammed the outlet of Lake Thompson, built grist and lumber mills, and had his dream of making woolen and cotton cloth. In 1792, Shepardfield Plantation was incorporated as the town of Hebron. In 1829, Hebron was divided and the western part became the town of Oxford. It was named in honor of the newly formed county in which it was situated, and which General David Learned, of Livermore, the first sheriff, christened after his old home in Massachusetts. Oxford contains the outlet of Lake Thompson and the village of Oxford, first known as Craigie's Mill, and where the woolen industry of the town was situated. Cloth-making began in Oxford as early as 1825, but was not always a prosperous business. Several of the mills burned and the firms operating the mills changed several times. About 1850, Joseph Robinson, a native of Hunslett, England, and expert dyer, took an interest in the business, and from that day forward it prospered.
