PLAYGROUP Our parent/caregiver run weekly playgroup will be held on a Monday morning this year (previously Wednesday morning) from 9.00am to 11.00am in our school hall. Please contact Mrs Maryam Shackleton on 0450 255 209 for further information. ANNUAL SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION FEE Notes will be sent home shortly to all parents and caregivers regarding the Annual School Contribution Fee. The fee is used to purchase necessary teaching and learning resources for your child’s classroom. The contribution fee is $40 for a single child or $75 for a family of 2 or more. I understand that families face additional expenses at the beginning of the school year; however, I consider the amounts to be both fair and reasonable. If any parent or caregiver is experiencing difficulty in making the payment, please make an appointment to see me through our school office. TECHNOLOGY FEE In addition to the Annual School Contribution Fee and in lieu of the TEXTBOOK FEE charged in previous years, the school is requesting that parents and caregivers pay a Technology Fee of $20 to assist us making annual subscription payments for programs such as Reading Eggs, Mathletics and Literacy Planet. The fee is also used to assist the school in purchasing computer software

Page 3: Bankstown North Public Schoolbankstownnorthps.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Term-1-Wee… · Noah El Sayed – 4/5Green ... embrace their learning and resume their friendships

which is used by all teachers K-6 to assist students with their learning.

Your prompt payment of the above fees is appreciated. Please see attached payment slips. MEET THE TEACHER AFTERNOON Our Meet the Teacher Afternoon will be held on Wednesday 22 February 2017 commencing at 3.30pm and concluding at 5.30pm. The following are the individual Stage times:

Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) – 3.30pm-4.00pm

Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2) – 4.00pm-4.30pm

Stage 2 (Years 2 & 3) – 4.30pm-5.00pm

Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6) – 5.00pm-5.30pm

Further information regarding the afternoon will be sent home closer to this date. I encourage all parents and caregivers to visit your child’s classroom on this occasion as it is an opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher and contribute to your child’s educational program. If you are unable to make these times and require an alternative appointment with your child’s class teacher, please inform the class teacher or contact our school office. This is a time for general information and not an interview regarding your child.

Reading Recovery Teacher, Mr Anthony Murphy will be conducting an information session with all parents and caregivers of Year 1 students selected to participate in the Reading Recovery program. Testing of students is currently underway and notes will be sent home shortly with those students selected to participate. If you receive a note, then it means your child has been selected to participate in the program therefore your attendance at this meeting is required as you will be receiving important information to assist your child with their reading. KINDERGARTEN TIMES AND ARRANGEMENTS Our new Kindergarten students have had a very settled start to the year. Please take note of the following to make your child’s transition into Kindergarten as smooth as possible.

Morning Drop Off Before the 9.00am morning please, please walk your child to the school toilets.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT PARENTS ASSIST US IN TRAINING THE NEW KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

TO USE THE TOILET SHORTLY BEFORE CLASS TIME BEGINS!

New Kindy’s will not line up under the COLA for the first two weeks.

Parents accompany their kindergarten child into the school hall. You can do this from 8.45 am. Parents to stand at back of hall please.

Afternoon Pick-Up

Pickup under the COLA at 2.30pm until Friday 10 February.

We encourage all families to make arrangements for their Kindergarten child to be personally picked up by an adult.

Please plan where you are going to park as parents may not park on school grounds.

Many of our parents have found it practical to park across the road in Jacobs Street and cross the Hume Highway on foot to collect their child/children.

BANKSTOWN NORTH PUBLIC SCHOOL ANNUAL SWIMMING CARNIVAL Our school swimming carnival for Years 1-6 will be held on Friday 17 February (Week 4) at Revesby Pool. Information and permission notes have already been sent home. If you require a copy, please look on our website under Notes to Parents. Please see Mrs Chacon if you require more details, or are able to assist staff on the day. NATIONAL DAY AGAINST BULLYING Our school will be participating in the National Day Against Bullying on Friday 17 March, 2017 (Week 8). More information about the event will be distributed shortly. Please see Mr Murphy for further details. P&C AGM Our next P&C Annual General Meeting (AGM) followed by a P&C meeting is on Friday 24 February, 2017 at 9.30am in the Staffroom. It is important that as many parents and caregivers attend this meeting so that we have a good representation of our school community present. As it will be an AGM, we will be filling the following positions:

P&C President

Vice-President

Secretary

Treasurer

If you are interested in taking up one of these positions, I encourage you to come along and express an interest. MUSIC BUS Music Bus lessons re-commenced last Thursday for 2017. The Music Bus provides our students with the weekly opportunity to learn a musical instrument e.g. keyboard, drums, guitar, ukulele or, participate in singing lessons at very reasonable cost. I cordially invite all our parents and caregivers wishing to enrol their child to visit the following website: www.themusicbus.com.au or telephone 1300 168 742.

SCHOOL UNIFORM Thank you to those parents and caregivers who have purchased the new school uniform. The students look very smart and professional in the new look and after speaking with many of them they are very happy to be wearing it, including the black school shoes! Remembering uniforms are now for sale at:

Yeronga Uniforms 900 Canterbury Road, Roselands

(between Flora and Remly Streets) Ph: 9759 1555

A reminder that Bankstown North Public School is a uniform school and that BLACK LEATHER SCHOOL SHOES are the correct school uniform footwear. This type of footwear not only protects the children’s feet but raises the standard of dress of our students. For this purpose, black leather shoes are required footwear for all our students under our current school uniform policy.

School hats are available for purchase from the front office for $13 at any time. The new style chosen gives greater sun protection while embracing a modern style.

DON’T FORGET TO LABEL YOUR CHILDS

BELONGINGS

You can:

use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels

go through your child’s bag with them each night

check that labels haven’t faded with washing

if something doesn’t come home, check the lost property bin located in the staffroom building

SCHOOL OPAL CARD A School Opal card is available for public transport travel between home and school. Students who were issued a School Opal card last year should have automatically received a new School Opal card for 2017. Students who require a School Opal card this year will need to make an application online at.

transportnsw.info/school-students

Once the application is completed, please print, sign and date the application, then submit it to the school office for endorsement. The school will then send the form to Transport for NSW. Once approved, the School Opal card will be sent to the address on the application. To be eligible, the following distance applies:

Years K-2 (Infants) There’s no minimum distance

Years 3-6 (Primary) 1.6km straight line distance or 2.3km walking

OUR SCHOOL CANTEEN STAFF Our school canteen is managed by Ms Marissa Saad. Marissa and her team are very approachable and are very welcoming of any ideas or suggestions you may have.

Please feel free to use the suggestion box which is located at the canteen for this purpose, or speak to Marissa and her staff directly. I encourage all parents and caregivers to utilise the canteen facilities when possible remembering that lunch orders should be placed before the morning bell rings at 9.00am. Children who are in line to order their lunch at this time will be served first, as they should be at morning lines so that they listen to important teacher messages. So that children are not late for morning lines parents and caregivers need to ensure that children arrive at school by 8.30am (not before as there is no teacher supervision). By doing so children have plenty of time to order their lunch and/or have a healthy breakfast (also available from the canteen) as well as play with their friends before the bell rings. Your cooperation with these matters is appreciated. Attached to this newsletter is the school canteen menu and Daily Specials. Canteen special – every time you order a “Daily Special’ from the canteen you will receive a free stamp. When you collect 3 stamps, you may redeem a free jelly cup any time at lunch.

DROPPING STUDENTS OFF BEFORE 8.30AM A number of our parents and caregivers are dropping their children at school BEFORE 8.30am. This is a safety concern for your child as there is NO TEACHER SUPERVISION BEFORE 8.30am. Parents and caregivers are therefore required to use our Before and After School Care facility for this purpose. If you require information regarding this service, please see our school office staff. In the interest of student safety, I will be contacting parents and caregivers who continue to abuse this important safety request. PARENTS/CAREGIVERS VISITING THE SCHOOL ALL parents and caregivers are requested when visiting the school during school hours, to sign the visitor’s book located in the school office and wear a visitor’s badge. Parents and caregivers will be directed by school staff to do so if they are in the school grounds without having complied with our regulation. The primary purpose of this exercise is Safety! Firstly, we are aware of who is in our school for the safety and wellbeing of all our students, and secondly, it will enable us to determine who is in the school should we need to implement our evacuation or lockdown procedures. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter. ARE YOUR DETAILS UP TO DATE? Please ensure you advise the school office if there is any change in your contact details (ie: address, mobile or home phone, email, emergency contacts). Often we are unable to contact parents due to not having the most up-to-date contact information. LOST PROPERTY Our school lost property box has a number of unclaimed school uniform items. This includes jumpers, jackets and hats and miscellaneous items. If your child has lost any school uniform clothing articles you are welcome to search our lost property box located by the entrance to the school administration block (at the COLA end). Please label all clothing and property e.g. lunchboxes and drink containers with your child’s name and class so that they do not get misplaced. Unclaimed clothing will be given to our school office for use as spare clothing at the end of the school term. SMOKING Parents please be advised that smoking is not permitted in the vicinity of the school gates. If you want to smoke you will need to cross the road.

HEALTH CARE PLANS We welcome information from parents about your child’s health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. This is particularly relevant if your child suffers from asthma. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning support for your child’s health and wellbeing. Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people mentioned as emergency contacts. We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health needs or as otherwise required by law. MEDICATION If your child needs to take medication, please bring it to the office and fill out the necessary authorisation for its administration. Under no circumstances are children permitted to have any form of medication in the classroom or in their schoolbags. MAKE SCHOOL AWARE OF SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES Any changes to your child's family situation can impact on their emotional and academic well-being. Inform your child's teacher and principal about any changed circumstances so that the child can be supported if necessary. Examples of special circumstances include the birth of a sibling, divorce or the death of a loved one. IF YOUR CHILD IS ABSENT FROM SCHOOL If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, please tell your child's teacher or send a signed note explaining the reason for the absence within seven days. LATE ARRIVALS Children who arrive at school after the morning assembly must go to the office and collect a late note. If this is not done, then they will be marked absent for the whole day as the front office staff amend the class roll not the teacher.

Page 6: Bankstown North Public Schoolbankstownnorthps.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Term-1-Wee… · Noah El Sayed – 4/5Green ... embrace their learning and resume their friendships

Please do not accompany your child to their classroom if they arrive late as this tends to unsettle the classes and interrupt valuable learning time. Children should proceed to class themselves (children requiring assistance to their classrooms will be assisted by our office staff). Any messages may be left with our office staff, who will pass them on to the teachers at the next break time. MOBILE PHONES If you deem it necessary for your child to bring to school a mobile phone, they must hand it in at the office before school and collect it when school is dismissed. WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY Our fortnightly formal whole school assemblies will be held on a Thursday afternoon (odd weeks) from 2.00-3.00pm in our school hall. The assembly will coincide with Newsletter week - therefore students who will be receiving Principal Awards or other significant awards at the assembly, will have their names published in the School Newsletter enabling you advanced notice and the opportunity to attend the assembly.

Our first WHOLE SCHOOL K-6 assembly for 2017 will be held on Thursday 9 February

from 2.00-3.00pm. Your attendance at our assemblies is always welcome! Thank you for your continued support. Jon Godwin Principal

Technology Update

At Bankstown North Public School we remain committed to providing our students with the most up-to-date educational resources to support their learning. Last year we purchased two class sets of Robotics kits, the WeDo 2.0 for our K-3 students and the EV3 kits for 4-6. Robotics encourages students to think creatively, analyse situations and apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to real world problems. Teamwork and co-operation are a cornerstone of robotics lessons. Students apply their growth mindset as they learn it is acceptable to make mistakes, especially if it leads them to better solutions. 15 new ipad’s have been added to our collection, providing our students with educational apps and plenty of storage to shoot, edit and share their learning. This year we will continue to bump up our ample supply of Chromebooks into Stage 2 – our aim is to have a top-notch personalised device for every one of our students! As the year progresses, existing Interactive Whiteboards will be replaced with innovative and streamlined units. With our perpetual upgrades, our teachers can continue connecting the learning that is happening in their classrooms with the world outside, our students will build the skills they need for success in the 21st-century work environment and we will be able to connect with you, our community in more effective ways.

BANKSTOWN NORTH PS

RULES

1. Be Responsible

2. Be Considerate

3. Be Honest Please go over these with your children

Page 7: Bankstown North Public Schoolbankstownnorthps.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Term-1-Wee… · Noah El Sayed – 4/5Green ... embrace their learning and resume their friendships

Kiss and Drop Zone UPDATE

Thank you to those families who have registered for Kiss and Drop. I am aware that many parents and caregivers now use the Kiss and Drop zone and the feedback I have received, not only from those parents and caregivers that use it, but from visitors to the school, has been very positive.

Unfortunately, there are some parents and caregivers who are not displaying their numbers on the passenger side sun visor. This is a safety requirement and parents and caregivers who continually choose not to comply will not be permitted to use the Kiss and Drop zone. Instead you will be requested to park in Jacobs Street and walk to the school to collect your child each afternoon. Similarly, if you have asked a relative/friend to collect your child from school of an afternoon they must also have your child’s Kiss and Drop zone number displayed. If you require additional numbers for other vehicles, please see our school office staff.

Abusing the system will simply mean you will not be permitted to use it! Therefore, please adhere to the safety procedures we have in place.

I am aware that there are traffic congestion problems on the Hume Highway of an afternoon. However, traffic congestion is a common occurrence in all schools at this time. To avoid this problem, can I suggest you consider entering the zone at around 3.15 - 3.20pm, that way you will avoid the congested 3.00pm period.

Last week I had further discussions with Bankstown Councils Traffic Engineer, Mr Mark Keulen regarding the changes to parking signage on Beresford Avenue, for the purpose of making our Kiss and Drop Zone procedures safer and more streamlined.

It was decided to change the signage in the cul-de-sac area only FROM: P15 8.00-9.30am and 2.30-4.30pm

TO: NO STOPPING 2.30-4.30pm School Days This will enable our parents and caregivers, as well as visitors to the school, to park in the cul-de-sac during the day. However, when our Kiss and Drop Zone is operating, you will not be permitted to park anywhere at all in Beresford Avenue, including the cul-de-sac. This new signage will be installed by latest end of Term 1, 2017. After which council will be enforcing the NO STOPPING rule by issuing fines to those parents and caregivers who choose not to comply.

For those parents and caregivers that are new to our school this year, the following outlines the process and procedures for using our Kiss and Drop zone:

1. Parents and caregivers wishing to use the Kiss and Drop Zone will need to complete the REGISTRATION FORM attached to this letter. This is important! After this has been returned to our school office, all parents and caregivers that are registered will be issued with a laminated piece of paper and two elastic bands (please see example below) with a number and the names of the children you have nominated to pick-up each afternoon. This will need to be permanently attached to your front passenger side sun visor using the two elastic bands provided.

2. Remember, that if you have requested a relative/friend to collect your child from school, they must also have the appropriate number displayed.

N.B. Continuous abuse of this important safety concern will result in you not being able to use the Kiss and Drop zone. Instead you will be required to park in Jacobs Street and walk to the school to collect your child of an afternoon.

3. Our school driveway gates will be locked each afternoon and NO parents and/or caregivers will be permitted to drive into the school grounds at all for Kiss and Drop pick-up.

John Zara

Page 8: Bankstown North Public Schoolbankstownnorthps.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Term-1-Wee… · Noah El Sayed – 4/5Green ... embrace their learning and resume their friendships

4. All parents and caregivers registered to use the Kiss and Drop zone drive into a designated pick-up zone marked by witches’ hats on Beresford Avenue commencing with the first pick up time slot of 3.05pm.

5. Upon approach into the designated pick up area you will need to ensure that your front passenger side sun visor is pulled down enabling your pick-up number as well as the names of the child/children you have registered to pick-up is clearly displayed. In the interest of student safety and wellbeing, if you are unable to collect your child/children and you are sending someone else to pick-up PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OFFICE PRIOR TO 3.00pm ON THE DAY. They should be displaying the pick-up number and names of the child/children on their sun visor.

6. Children will line up inside the school grounds alongside the inside fence of the pick-up area. If it is raining, then children will line up under our covered area outside the school hall.

7. When the teachers on duty see that you have arrived correctly in the designated Kiss and Drop Zone area, the teacher will call out your number using a microphone. Your child/children will need to know their number and be listening carefully. Another teacher will then walk your child/children to your car

IN ADDITION:

8. In the interests of safety, parents and caregivers WILL NOT be permitted to park in Beresford Avenue and walk into the school grounds to collect their child/children. Teachers will escort your child/children to your car. Therefore, please remain in your car at all times during the pick-up time and refrain from using your mobile phone! Remembering this is illegal!

9. Parents and caregivers wishing to enter the school grounds to pick-up their child/children will need to park in Jacobs Street (located opposite the school off the Hume Highway near the Sydney Kebab Shop). The Hume Highway pedestrian gate will be opened for this purpose at approximately 2.40pm each day. For safety reasons, PLEASE DO NOT WALK THROUGH THE KISS AND DROP ZONE AREA otherwise you will be directed to use the pedestrian gate on the Hume Highway. Alternatively, parents and caregivers are able to park and enter via the lane and back gate located beside our school oval (laneway is off Rookwood Road). This gate will also be opened at approximately 2.40pm each day.

10. NO CARS are to park in the middle of the road, or at the end of the cul-de-sac as this will be a turning circle for those in the Kiss and Drop Zone queue. Parents and caregivers who park inappropriately will be asked to move and join the designated pick-up zone queue. Remembering, you will not be permitted walk into the schools to collect your child/children if you are parked there.

11. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to pick-up your child/children from school between 3.00pm and 3.30pm each day. If you are unable to collect your child during this period, it is also YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to notify the school office. Before and After School Care is available and therefore parents and caregivers who are consistently late will be asked to consider this option. Remembering it is not the school’s responsibility to care for children after 3.30pm.

12. Two teachers will be on duty each afternoon to ensure that this process runs smoothly. Your cooperation with staff in following the above procedures is both expected and appreciated. Verbal abuse or inappropriate behaviours from any parents or caregivers towards staff or other parents/caregivers will not be tolerated. Police will be contacted to ensure that the practices and procedures are strictly adhered to.

If you have any questions regarding the new pick-up procedures, please see either me or Mr Anthony Murphy. Thank you for your cooperation and support with this important safety matter.

Positive Behaviour For Learning

(PBL)

At Bankstown North Public School,

we choose to be safe learners

Bankstown North Public School has undertaken the Positive Behaviour for Learning

program as the major focus of the school’s Wellbeing component.

As part of the program the children are rewarded for Making Good Choices, Being

Safe and Being Learners by receiving a ‘Crikey’ – a yellow slip of paper that the child

receives from teachers when they are seen to be following our school expectations.

The children then place these into a barrel and enter the weekly ‘Crikey Raffle’. The

more ‘Crikeys’ a child receives in a week; the greater chance they have of winning

the raffle.

The ‘Crikey’ Raffle takes place at the Friday morning assembly with the two winners –

one from Kindergarten to Year Two and the other from Year Three to Year Six –

winning a $2 canteen voucher and a letter home from Mr Godwin.

Our winners for Week 2 are:
