From Fr. Bernie: The Season of Lent commences this week on Ash Wednesday which is a day of fast and abstinence (fast = less food and drink for those 19-59 years old and abstinence = no meat for those 15 and older). From Fr. Bernie:

The Season of Lent commences this week on Ash Wednesday which is a day of fast and abstinence (fast =

less food and drink for those 19-59 years old and abstinence = no meat for those 15 and older). Many, of

course, will want to extend what is obligatory on Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday to the voluntary practice of prayer, fasting and abstinence throughout the whole of

Lent. During Lent our Sunday Masses will commence with the Entrance Hymn “Come Now, O Word of God” which is

new to us but easy to learn. There will be no Recessional Hymn or music; instead we will depart in silence.

Ash Wednesday. Mass and Giving of Ashes at Banyo at 9am in the school’s Multi-Purpose Hall with the whole

school attending; there is a St. Joseph School Ash Wednesday liturgy for the giving of ashes in Corpus Christi

church commencing at 11.45am; and an evening Mass and giving of ashes at Nundah at 6.30pm.

Stations of the Cross during Lent will be held at Banyo 6pm commencing on Wednesday March 13th and at Nundah

6pm commencing on Friday March 8th.

Pauline O’Donnell’s Farewell Night happened through the generous help of Julie Kelly and Cath van Dongen.

Thank you ladies. Thanks to the Holy Spirit Seminary for

the use of their beautiful Xavier Hall as a fitting venue.

Correction. I made a mistake when I wrote last week that Fr. John Sullivan was away from the parish for 18 months.

Fr. John was away for some Long Service leave and, during

an illness, weekend Masses but otherwise he was in the parish.

The Word of God for Today: Looking inwardly -

acting outwardly The gospel today presents three unrelated sayings of Jesus

which outline the qualities of a true follower of Jesus. The

unifying theme is integrity - being honest and sincere with oneself and rejecting all forms of deception, superficiality,

falseness or hypocrisy. In questioning the sense of a blind man leading the blind, Jesus is speaking to the importance

of leaders having experienced a situation themselves before presuming to guide other people.

The instruction to remove the log from one's own eye before commenting on the splinter in another's eye, is a

clear call to judge self and others honestly and fairly. Jesus speaks disparagingly of people who ignore their own failings

while focussing on the faults of others and refers to them

as 'hypocrites', a word which had previously been reserved for the Pharisees and scribes. Finally, in declaring that a

good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and that a bad tree cannot

bear good fruit, Jesus is emphasising that inward

dispositions manifest themselves in external words and actions. (Taken from Brisbane Liturgy’s ‘Liturgia’)

Plenary Council 2020. Submissions close on Wednesday

March 6th.

The Parish Finance Council Meeting considered the

following matters: Reports were received from our school principals, Kerry Latimer and Peter Gordon; there was a

report from the recent Parish Pastoral Council meeting; this year’s fundraising events were outlined by Evarist D’Souza;

Kelly Darben, our Parish Finance Officer, gave the parish financial report; some matters from a recent meeting with

the architect Sidney Rofe in regard to the Parish Centre

project were reported – the Tender Process should commence this week; we discussed a number of

maintenance issues in regard to parish assets; a Corpus Christi Church Centenary Committee is to be formed.

The Lenten Program sessions will commence this week. There are parish group sessions after the Wednesday

morning Mass and evening Stations of the Cross at Banyo and after the Friday morning Mass at Nundah. The work

books are available for those who ordered them.

Ember Days are special days of prayer and penance,

focussing on the environment, the weather seasons and God’s providence. On this first Sunday of the season of

Autumn after the Autumn Ember Day (First Friday of March) our Church encourages us to reflect on God’s providence in

our lives. There is nothing good in life that does not come

from God. This includes our POSSESSIONS and the commodity that we easily associate with those possessions

MONEY. I know it is called ‘that tainted thing’ in the Bible but it is only tainted when it is used for selfish purposes.

So I have two questions: Firstly, ‘What are you doing with your money now?’ Now: phone the parish office in order to

join the Parish Planned Giving Program – you can use

envelopes or give by Direct Debit or Credit Card. Secondly, ‘What plans do you have for your money after you die?’

The parish has four options for you to include in your will: a financial gift to the ‘Banyo Nundah Catholic Parish’; a

The Holy Father’s Intentions for March Evangelization:

That Christian communities, especially those who are persecuted, feel that they are close to Christ

and have their rights respected.

The month of March is dedicated to Saint Joseph.

Stewardship “A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.” (Luke 6:43) Are you using your God-given gifts in the way God intended? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what

you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan.

Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glory of His name.

The Catholic Church Abuse Summit on the Protection

of Minors in the Church has concluded in Rome coinciding with the news of Cardinal Pell’s conviction. We

pray for our Church especially for its members who have

been abused.

Every Blessing,

Fr Bernie

Statement from Archbishop Mark

Coleridge RE: the verdict in the

Cardinal Pell case: The news of Cardinal George Pell’s conviction on historical

child sexual abuse charges has shocked many across Australia and around the world, including the Catholic

Bishops of Australia. The Bishops agree that everyone

should be equal under the law, and we respect the Australian legal system. The same legal system that

delivered the verdict will consider the appeal that the Cardinal’s legal team has lodged. Our hope, at all times, is

that through this process, justice will be served.

In the meantime, we pray for all those who have been

abused and their loved ones, and we commit ourselves anew to doing everything possible to ensure that the

Church is a safe place for all, especially the young and the vulnerable.
