Bernie: The Word of God (Gospel) for Today (Luke 12:32-48): The Son of Man and the Kingdom of God This Sunday's gospel is made up of three distinct units: the first verse is actually the conclusion of 12:22-32; the next two verses (vv. 33-34) are independent sayings about poverty and wealth. Then two parables introduce new themes: vigilance and fidelity. But the Lectionary combines these passages in a new way. Using the image of a master returning either from a wedding (12:35-40) or from some other journey (12:42-48), Jesus instructs his disciples about the coming of the 'Son of Man' (12:40). The Lectionary uses the two parables to illustrate the opening verses in which Jesus assures his disciples that God will bless them with a 'treasure' that is inexhaustible, secure in heaven, and immune from destruction (12:33). In the Lectionary context the treasure which God gives is another metaphor for the 'kingdom'. The kingdom for which disciples are to pray (11:2) and seek (12:31) is the kingdom which God 'is pleased to give you' (12:32). Thus when Jesus says, 'much will be required of the person entrusted with much' (12:48), we have already been told that disciples have been entrusted with the Kingdom. How great, then, are the Master's expectations when the treasure is so great. The combination of these two themes - the kingdom and the coming of the Son of Man - recalls another crucial passage, namely, Daniel 7:13-14. In this important passage one 'like a Son of Man' comes before God and is given the kingdom. As the parables make clear, disciples await the coming of the Son of Man. Each of the two parables highlights different aspects of the disciples' waiting. The first parable urges vigilance so as not to be caught off-guard. The second parable demands faithfulness so as to be busy about the duties which have been assigned. Vigilance is rewarded by being served by the Master at table; fidelity in service is rewarded with greater authority, but infidelity is severely punished. Laudato Si’. Thanks to the several parishioners who expressed their desire to join a Parish Laudato Si’ Steering Group. If there are others interested please let me know by mentioning it to me after this Sunday’s Masses. Once I have heard from the archdiocese about the availability of the Parish Kit I will be in touch to organize a meeting. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Seven days after the Solemnity of St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop the Church celebrates the life of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Her assumption was defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950 with the words: "Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory". From heaven the two Marys, Mary Help of Christians and St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop, guide the Catholic Church in Australia. May our devotion to them be rewarded with the graces Australia needs and the Catholic Church in Australia needs. Plenary Council 2020. If you wish to be a part of continuing the process of preparing for the Plenary Council then put your name and contact details on the clipboards at the entrances to Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi churches. On the last Thursday evenings (after the 6.30pm Mass in Holy Trinity church) of the following months you will have the opportunity to meet and discuss with others the six National Themes. The Listening and Discernment phase goes from August to January. A Snapshot of the fifth of the six national themes asks the question: How is God calling us to be a Christ-centred Church in Australia that is a joyful, hope-filled and servant community? As we move into this second stage of preparation for the Plenary Council, we continue to seek the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Beginning in July 2019, we are called to reflect on Scripture, Church teaching and good practice, to discern the answer to this question. The fruits of what is discerned during this time will shape the agenda of the first session of Plenary Council in October 2020. This National Theme for Discernment is inspired by the voices of the People of God who expressed a yearning for the Church to be a sign of God’s kingdom for all people in Australia – to be able to see the Catholic Church in action, and to recognise Jesus. There was an expression of faith-filled hope in the capacity of the Catholic community to celebrate together, to show what it is to be a follower of Christ and to be loved unconditionally by God. There was a call to contemplate the Gospel call to be a servant Church for the good of all people in Australia particularly for refugees and asylum seekers and other people who are vulnerable or at risk. Many responses called for greater sharing of the story of the good works done by so many people and organisations of the Church. Some responses expressed a hunger for strong witness of faith, especially by priests, young people and female leaders in parish and school ministries. SAVE THE DATE Annual Catholic Campaign: 7-8 September, 2019 The Annual Catholic Campaign is now a month away. THANK YOU for your participation last year! With your support over $1 million much needed funds for Priests Foundation, Holy Spirit Seminary, Centacare Pastoral Ministries and the MacKillop School Access Fund was raised. The Annual Catholic Campaign is an archdiocesan sanctioned appeal and once again this year your support is being sought to ensure these vital ministries continue to fulfill their mission. The Campaign will be held on the weekend of 7-8 September, 2019. Every Ordinary Time Blessing, Fr. Bernie.

Holy Day of Obligation

Acknowledgement of Country. We, the parishioners of the Banyo Nundah Catholic Parish, acknowledge the Turrbal people, the Traditional Custodians who have walked upon and cared for this land for thousands of years. We acknowledge the continued deep spiritual attachment and relationship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to this country and commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of Reconciliation.

We pay our respects to any first nation peoples who are present among us.

“……MAY THEY ALL BE ONE” (John 17:20)

From Fr. Bernie:

The Word of God (Gospel) for Today (Luke 12:32-48): The Son of Man and the Kingdom of God

This Sunday's gospel is made up of three distinct units: the first

verse is actually the conclusion of 12:22-32; the next two verses (vv.

Her assumption

was defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950 with the words: "Mary,

having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory". On the last Thursday evenings (after the 6.30pm Mass in Holy Trinity church) of the following months you will have the opportunity to meet and discuss with others the six National Themes. The Listening and Discernment phase goes from August to January.

A Snapshot of the fifth of the six national themes asks the

question:

How is God calling us to be a Christ-centred Church in Australia that is a joyful, hope-filled and servant community?

The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

LUKE 12:34 Jesus encourages us to build up our treasure in heaven. The world encourages us to build up our treasure in real

estate, investments, and material goods. How much time

are you investing in building up a worldly treasure? How much time are you investing in building up a heavenly

treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, you must let go of some of the things of this world.

Safeguarding Policy

The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children, young people and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an in-

trinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physi-cal and emotional harm.

They are to be treasured, nurtured and safeguarded by all.

This means that everyone in the church must ensure that the fundamental rights of children, young people and

vulnerable adults are respected.
