From Fr. Bernie: Jubilee Mass. I am grateful to the Archdiocese of Brisbane for the Mass celebrated in the Cathedral of St. Stephen last Wednesday. Mass was followed by lunch during which the various groups of Jubilarian Priests (60, 50, 40 & 25 yrs.) were fed and ‘watered’, toasted and given gifts. If you get the chance look up the archdiocesan website https:// brisbanecatholic.org.au/ and search for Archbishop Mark’s homily it will be well worth the read. (It may not have been posted yet). My thanks to those Banyo Nundah parishioners who were able to make it to the cathedral I am very blessed to have such generous support from parishioners, present and past, and family. The party month is almost over with just a couple of celebrations to endure (sorry enjoy!). It has been an eye-opener for me. I don’t think very often about what people think of me or how people see me. I’m happy doing what I do and trusting that it is what God wants. Your kindness is perhaps God’s way of pointing out that I am. So thank you and keep me in your prayers. The Word of God (Gospel) for Today: Discipleship: sitting at his feet The Lectionary omits the first half of verse 38: 'As they continued on the journey ...' On Sunday 13 we discussed the journey as a metaphor for discipleship, i.e, following Jesus, even to Jerusalem. This Sunday's episode in the gospel highlights another aspect of discipleship. Mary 'sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking' (v. 39). The Greek here is more specific: Mary 'listened to his word'. Luke has earlier implied that the word of Jesus is comparable to the word of God (4:36; 7:7; 8:11-15). Mary, then, is listening to 'his word'. Moreover, Mary's posture indicates what is happening in this scene. 'To sit at the feet' is the posture of a disciple. In Acts 22:3, Paul explains his rigorous Jewish background: 'At the feet of Gamaliel I was educated strictly in our ancestral law'. Any action at the feet of another recognises the authority of that person (see Luke 7:38; 8:35, 41; 17:16; Acts 4:35, 37; 5:2; 22:3). Disciples are those who are silent and listen to a Master; the Master instructs, the disciple learns. In a patriarchal society it is very unusual for a woman to be in the place of a disciple. Yet Mary has presumed to take this traditionally male place and Jesus, in violation of expected custom, not only accepts her but declares that she has chosen the better part. In this Mary models for disciples the essential attitude of attentiveness: 'blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it' (Luke 11:28). Not only do those who are instructed by his word become disciples, they are his family: 'My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it' (Luke 8:21). Martha acknowledges Jesus as the Master by addressing him as 'Lord' (v. 40). But then she presumes to give him instructions, 'Tell her to help me' (v. 40)! In her eagerness to serve at table she has neglected his word - something the apostles will explicitly refuse to do (see Acts 6:2-4). To follow Jesus, disciples must listen 'at his feet'. (Taken from Liturgia) A Parish Pastoral Council meeting is usually held once a month. The next meeting will occur this week on Thursday evening after Mass at Banyo. Pastoral councillors are elected every couple of years; they are not ‘Father’s Helpers’; they give direction and leadership so that the parish will be faithful to the Church’s mission and vision to be Good News especially to those most in need. Events such as the Plenary Council 2020 and the Archdiocesan Assembly to be held 4/5 October this year are opportunities for Catholics to listen to what God is asking of us and to put into practice. The Pastoral Council pays particular attention to these events as well as local initiatives, all for the good of the parish, the wider church and community. Please offer your prayerful support to your pastoral councillors: Co-chairs, Cath van Dongen and June Pantaleon, Celso Gorospe, Michael McMorrow, Elizabeth Fraser, Diane Nalatu, Carmel Bullimore, Christine Fernandez, Andrew Woods, Angela Loruma, Kathy Ham and Kathy Grupe. Catholic Mission. This Sunday we welcome David McGovern (6pm and 5pm Masses) and Jane Doogan (7.30 and 9.30am Masses) as speakers from Catholic Mission. David and Jane will encourage us to be generous towards the work of Catholic Mission. If you have not come prepared to give this week please take home a giving envelope and make your offering at Mass next Sunday. Plenary Council 2020. Following on from last week’s report this is a ‘snapshot’ report of the second of the six National Themes for Discernment which are printed on the back page of this newsletter: God is calling the Church in Australia to be INCLUSIVE, PARTICIPATORY AND SYNODAL. This National Theme for Discernment is inspired by the voices of the People of God who expressed a desire for individuals and groups within and also beyond the Church to find a better welcome and be incorporated more into her life and mission. There was a call to renew forms of governance and leadership in the Church, to find ways formally and informally of being co-responsible for ministry and mission, seeking structures and processes of collaboration, shared decision-making and financial co- responsibility in order to enable this greater involvement of lay people particularly of women, young people, people of diverse cultural backgrounds and people with disabilities. There was an expressed need for stronger connections across the many parts of the Church, and with other Christian traditions. Every Ordinary Time Blessing. Fr. Bernie. The Holy Father’s Intentions for July Universal: That those who administer justice may work with

integrity, and that the injustice which prevails in

the world may not have the last word.

Stewardship “…I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God.” COLOSSIANS 1:25 We are all called to evangelize – to continuously grow in our

relationship with Jesus and to share it with others. We may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look

for opportunities to share our faith with those closest to us, like our family, friends and neighbors. Pray for the courage

to share your faith the next time the opportunity arises.

Safeguarding Update

Recently the archdiocesan office forwarded the parish a list of Banyo Nundah parish volunteers who have completed the

safeguarding training either in the face to face format in 2018 or online in 2019.

This list indicates that there are a number of parish volunteers who have yet to complete this training. It is

Archdiocesan policy that ALL volunteers must undertake training every two years with regards to Safeguarding

Children and Young Adults.

To complete the training via the online format will take

approximately 25 minutes. At the completion of the training volunteers are required to fill in a confirmation form, print

the form and return the form to the Parish office for verification. This training can be accessed at

https://www.safeguardingaob.com.au/safeguarding-training.html

If you require any further information please contact the parish Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults

representative (Catherine Byrnes 3267 5222) or the parish office. Thank you for your co-operation with regards this

very important issue.

Sister Stan Mumuni is at the forefront for the Church’s work in reaching out to

children in need in Ghana. As the director

of Nazareth Home for God’s Children, Sister Stan works endlessly to provide education,

healthcare and a safe home for children rescued from life-threatening situations.

In line with traditional beliefs, in parts of

Ghana, children born with a disability, or whose mother passes during childbirth, are considered to be ‘spirit children’

and thus at risk of being harmed or killed. The Church in

Ghana is dedicated to protecting these children and educating families to ensure every child has a chance to live

a full life. The Nazareth Home for God’s Children is among the pioneers in this crucial mission.

Today you have the opportunity to personally partner with

the Church in Ghana and offer monthly support to this essential work. All gifts will be directed to life-saving

projects for children in need. Your one-off gift today is also

very much appreciated and will make a great difference to those in need.
