From Fr. Bernie: A farewell to our long-serving Parish Secretary Pauline O’Donnell is being organized to take place on Friday March 1 st commencing at 6pm in Xavier Hall, Holy Spirit Seminary, Banyo. Xavier Hall is the seminary building on the corner of Approach and Earnshaw Roads. It is important, indeed imperative, for catering purposes to have an idea of how many intend to attend. Please RSVP before February 24 by phone or email to either Julie Kelly on (0411 023 304 or 07 3633 0270; [email protected]) or Cath van Dongen on (0421 468 950 or 07 3267 1539; [email protected]). The Word of God for Today: The call of Simon Peter In his introduction Luke had promised 'to write . . . down in an orderly sequence' (1:3) 'a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us' (1:1). This Sunday's episode - the call of the first disciples - is a good example of Luke's 'orderly sequence'. Mark's gospel begins with a telescoped account of John the Baptist's ministry, a very brief report of Jesus' baptism and temptations in the wilderness, and a two verse summary of Jesus' initial preaching. Then, out of the blue, Jesus meets and calls his first disciples in the sixteenth verse of the first chapter! Apart from Jesus' announcement that the Kingdom of God is at hand, he has done no preaching, performed no miracles, expelled no demons; yet when he calls Peter and Andrew, James and John, they drop everything and follow him. By contrast, Luke carefully prepares the ground for this dramatic call. After an elaborate infancy narrative that explicitly lays out the identity of Jesus, Luke begins with an extended presentation of John's ministry, a more detailed narration of the baptism, a dramatic account of the three temptations in the wilderness, and Jesus' inaugural sermon in the synagogue in Nazareth; then (omitted from the Lectionary) Luke gives us more of Jesus' teaching in Capernaum and several healings (a possessed man, Simon's mother-in-law, and the sick villagers). Only now does Jesus call Simon Peter. By this time the credentials of Jesus have been clearly established and Simon has personally witnessed the healing of his mother-in-law. Further, in Luke's account, there is a miraculous catch of fish - not reported in the other three versions of the call of Simon. Luke provides a record of accomplishment and a factual basis on which Simon and the others can make their response. Luke makes both Jesus' authority and Peter's response something readers can relate to. The presence of Jesus brings about great transformations: empty nets become overflowing and a man who protested to Jesus, 'depart from me!' ends up following him. In this last transformation Jesus' power turns a sinner into a disciple. From Fr. Bernie:

A farewell to our long-serving Parish Secretary Pauline O’Donnell is being organized to take place on

Friday March 1st commencing at 6pm in Xavier Hall, Holy Spirit Seminary, Banyo. Xavier Hall is the seminary building

on the corner of Approach and Earnshaw Roads. It is

important, indeed imperative, for catering purposes to have an idea of how many intend to attend. Please RSVP before

February 24 by phone or email to either Julie Kelly on (0411 023 304 or 07 3633 0270; [email protected])

or Cath van Dongen on (0421 468 950 or 07 3267 1539; [email protected]).

The Word of God for Today: The call of Simon Peter In his introduction Luke had promised 'to write . . . down in

an orderly sequence' (1:3) 'a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us' (1:1). This Sunday's episode -

the call of the first disciples - is a good example of Luke's

'orderly sequence'. Mark's gospel begins with a telescoped account of John the Baptist's ministry, a very brief report of

Jesus' baptism and temptations in the wilderness, and a two verse summary of Jesus' initial preaching. Then, out of

the blue, Jesus meets and calls his first disciples in the sixteenth verse of the first chapter! Apart from Jesus'

announcement that the Kingdom of God is at hand, he has

done no preaching, performed no miracles, expelled no demons; yet when he calls Peter and Andrew, James and

John, they drop everything and follow him.

By contrast, Luke carefully prepares the ground for this

dramatic call. After an elaborate infancy narrative that explicitly lays out the identity of Jesus, Luke begins with an

extended presentation of John's ministry, a more detailed narration of the baptism, a dramatic account of the three

temptations in the wilderness, and Jesus' inaugural sermon

in the synagogue in Nazareth; then (omitted from the Lectionary) Luke gives us more of Jesus' teaching in

Capernaum and several healings (a possessed man, Simon's mother-in-law, and the sick villagers). Only now does Jesus

call Simon Peter. By this time the credentials of Jesus have been clearly established and Simon has personally

witnessed the healing of his mother-in-law. Further, in

Luke's account, there is a miraculous catch of fish - not reported in the other three versions of the call of Simon.

Luke provides a record of accomplishment and a factual basis on which Simon and the others can make their

response. Luke makes both Jesus' authority and Peter's

response something readers can relate to.

The presence of Jesus brings about great transformations: empty nets become overflowing and a man who protested

to Jesus, 'depart from me!' ends up following him. In this last transformation Jesus' power turns a sinner into a

disciple. (Taken from Brisbane Liturgy’s ‘Liturgia’)

NATIONAL REDRESS SCHEME—THUMBNAIL SKETCH

OF HOW IT IS NOW WORKING In December/January, Social Services Minister Paul Fletcher

announced that Brisbane Archdiocese is now a participating institution in the National Redress Scheme and applications

to the Scheme related to ministries run by the archdiocese

can now be processed. The Brisbane Archdiocese entered the Scheme via Australian Catholic Redress Ltd, a company

established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference to represent dioceses in the Scheme.

The Department of Human Services sends requests for

information (RFI) for redress applications that relate to

diocesan entities – parishes, diocesan schools and diocesan ministries – to Australian Catholic Redress Ltd, which directs

the RFI to the relevant church authority, e.g. Brisbane Archdiocese. The Archdiocese then provides information it

holds that is relevant to the application to the Department

to enable an independent assessor to make a determination of the appropriate level of redress. Applicants have six

months in which to decide whether or not to accept the determination.

Among the roles of Australian Catholic Redress Ltd is

ensuring timely and thorough responses are provided by

dioceses to facilitate efficient and effective operation of the Scheme.

The Holy Father’s Intentions for February Universal:

For a generous welcome of the victims of human trafficking, of enforced prostitution, and of

violence. The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family

Stewardship “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8)

Every day, in little ways and in big ways, God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new

ministry, to give a friendly smile to a stranger or say a word of encouragement to a friend, God constantly provides

opportunities to help someone in need. The next time you

hear God calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.”

A VOCATION VIEW: God does not ask you to be

successful: God does ask you to be faithful. Put your vocation ahead of your career.

Safeguarding Policy

The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children, young people and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an

intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm.

They are to be treasured, nurtured and safeguarded by all.

This means that everyone in the church must ensure that the fundamental rights of children, young people and

vulnerable adults are respected.

Continued from front page Lenten Program. Each year some find the weekly meeting

to pray, learn and discuss to be a helpful way to do something extra for Lent. The Lenten Program is prepared by the

archdiocese. This year the program is called ‘Compassion – Reflecting, Sharing and Living the Good News’. The Gospel Reflections have been written by Fr John Chalmers

whom many of you know. Fr John is Director of Mission and Formation, Centacare, Brisbane, and has extensive experience

in parish ministry, hospital chaplaincy, and teaching and has given presentations across Australia. The opening and closing

prayers have been written by Sophy Morley, Diocesan

Coordinator for Liturgy, Diocese of Sale.

If you would like to be a participant please fill out the form available at Mass today so that the ordering of the resource

can be made. The Program can be a private, family or group

experience. Parish Group sessions will be held at Nundah after the Friday 9am Mass and at Banyo on Wednesday after

the Stations of the Cross at 6.30pm. You might like to form your own group. The Lenten Program will commence in the

week beginning March 3rd as each session is based on the Gospel reading for the Sundays of Lent.

From the Suggestion Box. “May we have quiet time in the church after Mass?” After Mass let us be aware of those

around us who remain in church for prayer.

Every Blessing,

Fr Bernie
