ConceptHours Open late, this spacewill provide students

living on opposite endsof the campus andthose living off campuswith a central meetingspace (as of yet there isno location on maincampus that is openpast midnight with aprimary function otherthan studying).

During the day andduring times whenevents are not planned, the Bar & Grill couldserve as an informalmeeting space andhangout spot forstudents.

    Thursday - Saturday:7PM - 2AM

Look into possibility oflunch hours or afternoonhappy hours

Similar toUrsas, but aplace thatmakes itpossible to meetupperclassmenand other peopleyou wouldntnormally meet.

Primarily, I think thisestablishment wouldhave a hugeimportance on campusfor Thursday nights,as this is a nightwhere many studentsgo out to local bars.

In a survey sent outto students thissummer, over1100 studentsresponded, 97% ofwhom said theywould utilize a Bar& Grill if it wereopened on campus.

Need on CampusCreating a space to build community

    Safe Drinking

The Bar & Grill could reduce

    unsafe, off campus drinking.

Due to the location of offcampus bars, off campusdrinking is not always a safeoption.

Some parties disturb bothstudents and residents wholive in the neighborhoodssurrounding the campus.

Close location to wherestudents live could reduce thepotential for drunk driving andprovide a more convenientlocation for students to get to.

    +

    Inclusive Environment

The Bar & Grill will create an

    inclusive atmosphere and

    serve as an alternative late-

    night social venue.

Often Greek life sponsoredsocial events are not open toall students.

With no student center oncampus, there is a need for asafe and central location

    where students can socializeand meet.

With tasty nonalcoholicbeverages and appealing foodoptions, the Bar & Grill will bea great dining location forstudents who wish to drinkand those who wish not to.

    Late Night Programming

The Bar & Grill will encourageinformal social interactions

    and late night programming on

    campus.

Without programming gearedtowards the residence halls, upperclassmen find it difficultto meet new students outsideof their established socialgroups.

Those who live off campus findit more difficult to attend oncampus parties and socialevents.

Flat screen televisions, dartboards, and dancing willattract and appeal to allstudents.

While there are many options for food on campus, much of it is centered around residence

areas (the exceptions being the DUC, which is not open very late and doesnt have the

intimate atmosphere that a Bar & Grill would have).

Activities and ProgrammingThe Bar & Grill fills the gap created by an absence of

    late night programmingBar Nights

The sale of alcohol will be permittedduring these set times for those over 21years of age (students must present id toreceive alcohol).

Food station may provide specials or adifferent menu for these times.

Lounge seating will be cleared to allowstudents space to mingle and dance.

Flat screen TVs to watch sports games ortelevision events will be available.

    After Parties

Bar & Grill can host after parties for otherevents on campus (WuSlam competition,Black Anthology, Gargoyle concert).

Bar & Grill will coordinate with other venuesand events to host after parties possible ina non-residential location.

The location of the Bar & Grill, very close tothe DUC, Edison, and the Gargoyle makes itan ideal location to host after parties.

The atmosphere of the Bar & Grill willencourage students to continue to hang out

and discuss events after they are over.Special Events

Student Union and other student groups cansponsor special events and theme nights.

Special bar nights and happy hours would add spice and variety to the monotony of middle of

the week programming. I think it should be hip and trendy, but also a clear student spacewhere everyone felt comfortable.

The Bar & Grill will be managed by Bon Apptit. The Bar & Grill will employ students as cashiers,

hostesses, and bartenders. The Bar & Grill Committee will serve as a steering

    committee for its operation.

Apptit staff member. Student Union will appoint 5 voting students. Ex-officio representation from the Washington University

Administration. Ex-officio representation from WUPD. Ex-officio representation from Bon Appetite.

    Functionality

The design of the space will be

Student focused. A committee formed by Student Union will work closely

with the contractors to design the space. The space will be designed to be versatile and easily

transformed for different types of events. The walls will be available for flyers and student

    expressions of creativity.

Seating and SpaceThe space will specifically have three sections:

The first section will be a serving station for food andalcohol.

The second section will contain a small to medium sizestage, that can host a D.J., speakers, or performers.

The third section will be a lounge area with tables andcomfortable seating.

The furniture will be easily transportable in to createlarger open spaces for dancing and other events.

LogisticsRunning and maintaining the success of the Bar & Grill

Theme parties, televised sporting events, back to school nights and an actual bar made theRat the destination for anyone unable to afford a taxi to the Landing or unwilling to make the

    schlep out to the Loop.

Have a frozen yogurt bar withdifferent flavor and toppingoptions.

    Sustainability

Using sustainable resources will always be apriority through the planning, design, implementation, and operation of the Bar &Grill.

An on-campus location withan off-campus feel, laid back, something different than a

    traditional college eatery.

I want to see American bar

    food, burgers, fries, nachos,

    hot wings.

Current Student Alcohol UseStudents have shown that they can responsibly consume alcohol oncampus through events like CPCs Happy Hour, Greek Prom, and otherevents.

Ibbys currently serves beer and wine to students who are over 21 years

old who really enjoy the opportunity and behave responsibly.

WashU has given us the autonomy to self-regulate with RedFlag andtrusting the students and letting them be responsible with their alcoholconsumption on campus has become a well-established program.

I prefer students to be on campus drinking because

downtown is still a walk away.
