Heartland festival off and running

Paul Costa live on ABC radio with presenter Nicole Bond in front of the Visitor Information Centre on Friday.

Enthusiastic crowds and full classes have given the 2011 Heartland Festival the thumbs up at the opening weekend in Blackall.

Festival president Danielle Butler said tourists and locals alike had been very complimentary about the entertainment the event offered.

“We throw a good dose of bush hospitality into a program that any city festival would be proud to own, and are really showing what Blackall has to offer,” she said.

Around 300 people braved a cool Saturday evening to sample the international flavours on offer at the food and music fiesta at the showgrounds and then went on to enjoy the live concert by country music stars Paul Costa and Victoria Baillie.

“The multicultural flavours were well received,” Danielle said.

“People liked the red meat menus – it’s something different that we can do well with sponsors like Tendabeef and Silverwood

Organics, so that will be back next year,” she said.

“And most of the band that played is heading to Nashville to record this week, so we had world class entertainment here.”

“It has really laid a good foundation for an even bigger and better event next year.”

Nearly 100 glowing lanterns, featuring a radiant red sun and luminous blue stars, was another highlight of the night.

“The kids in the parade had a ball,” said organiser Karla Ward. “A few of them didn’t get a chance to make a lantern at a workshop but they loved joining in the spectacle in front of the crowd.”

The lanterns were created under the guidance of Sunshine Coast tutor Tamara Kirby and funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund.

Blackall’s Living Arts Centre has had a “house full” sign out as well, with 14 students from Gracemere, Tambo, Barcaldine and local areas making the most of skilled drawing

tutor Cees Sliedrecht.“He has been touching on what

are new techniques for most of us, sketching with pen and ink,” said Tambo’s Cassie Swanson.

Cassie was one of the prizewinners announced at the Heartland art exhibition opening on Friday night, receiving the award for best local artist.

Lesley Heatley was second in this section.

Roslyn Dux from Southport and Aramac’s Mylinda Rogers were each dual winners on the night – Roslyn for the landscape and open subject categories and Mylinda for contemporary paintings and 3D works.

Windorah artist Margaret Stevenson won the miniature category and Brian Harris from Southport collected the prize for portraiture.

Festival patron Gina Fairfax described the evening as another example of Blackall’s amazing coverage of the arts.continued page 3.

From the Editor

After the Remote Area Planning and Development Board meeting in Longreach, I drove to a meeting in Toowoomba in regard to the reduction of logging in Queensland’s cypress forests, which was held on Thursday May 18. The Queensland State Government remains committed to reduction of available logging areas and to creating more state forest areas. The five regional councils involved have reiterated their concerns for the social and economic welfare of communities in which logging and milling are conducted and will continue to lobby the Government on this matter.

Travelling on to Brisbane I was able to attend a meeting, on behalf of the Remote Area Planning and Development Board and Local Government, with AgForce in regard to the compounding escalation of state government rental on leasehold grazing lands. As this was an inaugural meeting there will be further developments to report. The impacts of excessive costs on landholders will have a direct effect on local governments.

The 2011 Heartland Festival has been underway for four days. My apology to the committee for being unable to attend the opening days of the festival this year.

I was able to open the Arts Yakka workshop in Tambo on May 28. This was a wonderful opportunity

for local arts council members and state and regional board members to get together with the Arts Queensland Chief Executive Officer Arthur Frame and Queensland Youth Arts representative Duncan Maurice, who will also be working and attending the Blackall Shockwave Festival. I participated in the first session facilitated by Dr Ros Derrett OAM titled “Successful Events”. This proved to be a most interesting session indeed. The

Queensland Arts Council has for 50 years supported regional and remote communities through a range of performance programs and visual art exhibitions. They also manage funding from both state and federal governments for regional programs.

A performance by comedian Dr Mark Bin Bakar will be held at the Blackall Show Grounds on Friday night. The Shockwave Festival in Blackall and the Tambo race meeting will bring the action packed week to a close. Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business, Jan Jarrat will be in attendance at the Shockwave Festival on Saturday.

Funding applications to Emergency Services Queensland have been both successful and unsuccessful. Blackall SES were successful in gaining funding of $2386.37 to replace the doors on their SES Building while Tambo SES were unsuccessful in their application to improve their building.

--Jan Ross

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Last weekend Blackall was kept busy with all the Heartland festival events, and this weekend is likely to be equally full with the Shockwave festival providing plenty of entertainment. There’s certainly no reason to say that there’s nothing to do in Blackall.

Thank you to everyone who has submitted information to me over the past weeks. It has made a busy job substantially easier.

Keep the stories, tip-offs, date claimers, letters to the editor and other information coming!

I am particularly enjoying these festival events as they are providing me with an opportunity to meet people from around the district who I haven’t had the chance to get to know before. As always, I welcome any suggestions about things that you would like to see in the newspaper and appreciate

any feedback that you choose to give me. I would also like to encourage businesses within the community to please advertise. It is advertising that allows us to sustain the paper. I have received positive feedback about the use of colour in the Barcoo Independent, but it is only through colour advertising bookings that we can afford to print these occasional coloured editions.

The Hearty Breakfast, which

began with a brisk walk around town organized by the Blackall Walking Group, was sponsored by the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council.

Action this week moves on to the Shockwave Festival, which is bringing young people from all over Queensland to Blackall for a weekend of live music, hip hop, skating and creative activities.

Tambo will also take centre stage with the staging of the Tambo Cup race meeting on Saturday and the opening of the Heartland photography exhibition at the Grassland Art Gallery on Sunday.

St Joseph’s students are learning a new skill with the introduction of a signing choir, which will perform songs using Australian sign language.

The choir is being run by teacher Katie Patterson-Kane who learnt sign language during her own primary school years, and is now relearning it with the students.

Ms Patterson-Kane said she’d had a good response from the students, with numbers increasing at each practice.

“I started it because I wanted to introduce something new to the school that they hadn’t had before,” Ms Patterson-Kane said.

“It’s a skill they’re going to have for the rest of their lives that could be really beneficial to them,” she said.

The choir has begun practicing each Thursday at lunchtime and will present songs at school assemblies later in the year, with the eventual goal of participating in the Charleville Eisteddfod, Ms Patterson-Kane said.

Shockwave festival organiser Brooke Newall said Ms Jarratt’s attendance was confirmed on Monday and would be great for the festival.

“It’s definitely exciting, and we’ll be able to chat with her about the future of the festival,” Ms Newall said.

Earlier this year Blackall IGA began a fundraising appeal for all those affected by the recent devastating floods in the South East corner and has now raised $2137.60 for the Premier’s Flood Appeal by staff and customers.

Collection tins were placed at each checkout and customers were asked to donate their change to the appeal.

The staff of IGA also contributed with a ‘free dress day’ where staff could have a day off from their normal uniform for the cost of $10.00 and a further $10.00 for the privilege of not wearing the customary IGA cap.

Store manager Zoe Johnson said the staff raised nearly $500 on these free dress days and that the customers also donated

generously.“It was amazing to see every

day the endless generosity of our customers from young school aged children who kindly donated their change from their after school treat to many adults who would hand over $50.00 without hesitation,” Zoe said

“It was easy to see that this was a natural disaster that touched everyone and I’d like to thank our customers and staff for their support and generosity.”

Plans are underway to have a free dress day once a month with all money raised going to a different local community group.

“Blackall’s support of us is unwavering and I am dedicated to return the favour,” Zoe said.

Songwriting workshops tap into Blackall spiritCountry music singer Paul Costa last week

conducted a number of songwriting workshops with the people of Blackall with the result a song created especially for the Heartland Festival.

Mr Costa held workshops with the Sing Australia Blackall Choir, St Joseph’s Catholic School and Blackall State School with each group contributing lyrics and information to the creation of the song, entitled “Lighting up the West.”

The song’s debut performance, by Mr Costa and workshop attendees, was at the Heartland Festival’s Food and Music Fiesta held at the showgrounds on Saturday night.

The workshops were supported by the Australian Government through Festivals Australia and the Regional Development Program of the Queensland Government: Events Queensland.

The songs started will be continued with assistance from Melinda Wells, with performances anticipated in the acoustic lounge of the Shockwave Youth Arts Festival.

Blackall residents gathered for the songwriting workshop with Paul Costa held at the Living Arts Centre.

It was a blast from the past last Friday at the Barcoo Independent office when the daughter of a former owner of the newspaper popped by for a visit.

Colette Braithwaite, now based in Roma, is the daughter of Roy Darwen who ran the Barcoo Independent from 1950 to 1981 when he sold it to Lloyd Marshall.

Ms Braithwaite and her sister Julie completed their education in Blackall and used to operate Colette’s Salon, a hairdressing business in the town.

Ms Braithwaite had been travelling around Queensland with her husband when she returned to her home town.

Ms Braithwaite said Blackall had a population of around 300 when she lived in town and though it had changed considerably since she moved away in 1973, she still thought it had a great atmosphere.

“I think Blackall looks very pretty and I love all the trees,” Mrs

Braithwaite said.Mr Darwen bought the Barcoo

Independent from Jack Scully in 1950 and the family lived in a cream house opposite the railway station, with the newspaper office located next door.

In those days the Barcoo Independent operated with six staff, all typesetting was done manually and the business doubled as a printery for the town, printing racing forms, wedding invitations, show schedules and docket books as well as the newspaper, according to Ms Braithwaite.

“People used to order personalised Christmas cards and we’d print them,” she said.

“I helped my father out with a lot of the job printing. We used to have special gold dust for wedding invitations, and it was a bit special.”

Blackall-Tambo councillors and senior management have been undertaking a series of road inspections during May to see firsthand the damage done to the region’s infrastructure through the unprecedented wet season just passed.

Chief executive officer Ken Timms said councillors had covered two-thirds of the region on their trips.

“We are very aware of the ongoing inconvenience for commuters and people trying to move stock about,” he said.

“Council has identified a number of priorities and has put in a submission for $20 million worth of damage. Once the funding is approved, we are geared up to get out and rectify a lot of the damage.”

Mr Timms added that if any high risk issues were left unattended in the meantime, council was keen to be kept informed by the public so emergent works could happen.

Sustainable gardening comes to Blackall Blackall residents got out their green

thumbs on Tuesday for the sustainable gardening day, held as part of the Heartland festival.

Around 65 people attended the workshop which started in the morning at the CWA Hall before moving to Jim and Jill Taylor’s home in Bedford Street for a healthy lunch and practical demonstration.

Visiting artists joined the group for the luncheon, after spending part of the morning sketching in the Taylors’ garden.

Workshop facilitator Leonie Shanahan travelled from the Sunshine Coast to conduct the day which featured information on topics such as composting, worm farms, no dig gardening and green manure crops.

Ms Shanahan said she was pleased with the response she had received from participants.

“There were a lot more people here than I expected,” Ms Shanahan said.

Workshop organiser Lindy Hardie said she had received a lot of positive feedback and that the practical demonstrations were particularly popular.

“Hopefully everyone’s gone home to aspire to build worm farms and compost heaps,” Lindy said.
