    Great i s

    the

Lord and g re atly to be praised? Never have we been

    more conscious

    of God s help and

    protection

than in the three months since

    our return to Thailand.

    We know many of

    you have been

    praying for

    us

and you wil l be interested

    to

    hear of

    our

    progress in

    medical education

    and other

    -aspects

    of the work.

    f i l l you in on

    a l l the deta i ls

    we wil l s ta r t with

    our

    t r ip from

    the

    States,

    O Hare Field on

    May

    l6 we were

    seen

    off by members of the

    family

    and Bros.

    Brady

    and Carl

    Miner

    of

    East Gary. In San

    Francisco

    we had a change of

    planes,

    and between planes were luncheon

    guests

    of the

    Bill

    Dunbar and Harold Uhlig families.

The Dunbars had become good friends as we worked together in the new Christian church

    at Glen Ellyn.

    Harold

    Uhlig

    is

a brother of Dorothy Uhlig our co-laborer for many

    years

    in

    Thailand,

    Our next

    stop

    was in

    Honolulu,

    where we

    had

    a

    brief vis i t

    a t

    the

    airport with

    Uncle

    Edgar

    and Aunt Mabel

    Nichols

    and Mrs. Kawano,

    mother of

    Roland, a

    Wheaton

    s tudent who

    had

    become a

    close

    f r iend

    of

    ours and who

    had

    helped us in our

    last-minute

    packing.

    Our only overnight

    stop

    on the

    t r ip

was in Tokyo, where we stayed

    in

    the

    airport guest

    house. The

    next

day, after stops in Taipei and Hongkong, we re

    turned home

    to Thailand.

    What a welcome awaited us

    at the

    Don Muang Airport ,

    where

    the

    C. W.

    Cal laway, Harry

    Schaefer

    and

    Don

    Byers

    families

    were

    waiting

    for

    our

    ar r iva l

    We

    s ta yed w ith

    the

    Callaways; and a

    special

t r ea t was the opportunity of

    vis i t ing

    with

    Edna

    Hunt, who was en

    route

    from

    missionary

    service

    in India to Canada.

    Dorothy stayed in Bangkok for

    two

weeks to a tten d to the mul t ip l ic i ty of de ta i ls

    involved in

    cus toms and immigration.

    After

    an

    overnight

    stop in Bangkok, Garland had

    to

    f ly on up

    to

Chiehgmai, where orientat ion classes were already under way

    As most of you know,

    the

    Chiengmai University of Medical

    Science

    has a working

    agreement

    with the Universi ty of I l l ino i s I l l ino i s provides

    indiv idual

    study and research.

    In sp ite of the

    Americans

    on the

    facul ty ,

most of my lectures and about half of the

    examinations have been in the

Thai language. This has not proved

    as much of a di f f i

    cul ty

as I had feared. I have been able

    to

    pass a l l my

    examinations

    in

    the Thai

    language. -

    There

    are

    64 f irst-year

    s tudents, o f

    whom 62 fare Buddhists. One g i r l i s an

    inactive Roman Catholic,

    and

I am the only Christian i n the class .

    During

    our f i r s t

    week

    end

    of

    school

    Buddhist

    p r i e s t s were

    ceremony

    to

    appease the s p i r i t s of

    the

    cadavers in the anatomy

    laboratory.

    Considerable

    pressure

    was put

    upon

    me to p a r t i c i p a t e ; but I

    took

    a

    firm

    stand and since t h a t time I have

been excused froth participating i n any Buddhist ceremonies. Being a student i n an

    Asian

    Buddhist University has

    given

    me new

    i ns ig ht s i nt o

    the pressures with which the

    minority

    must

    contend

    he

    t h a t

    I

    would

    be

    required

    to

    l i v e

    i n

    the dormitory; but

    now I am grateful

    for the

    deep

    l i f e has given me of

    th e

    l i v e s

    and

    thought

    forms of

    Asian

    students.

    I am sure

    t h a t

    t h i s wil l be a great help i n leading them to Christ ,

    Though

    required

    to

    s tay

    i n

    the

    dormitory during

    the

    school week, I

    have

    unlimited

    v i s i t i n g

    p r i v i l e g e s

    with the family

    on weekends.

    At

    the

    end

    of

    the f i r s t t r i m e s t e r my grades are

    not

    as high

    as

    I would l i k e

    but ,

    nevertheless, bessing I n gross

    anatomy

    and

    embryology

    y grades are in th^^.midSleVthirdt F^Si^^ and

    in

    bio

    chemistry, physiolo^, and histology

    I

    placed in the upper third.

    The mental

    abil i ty

    and competition among

    the

    students here I

    find

    to be on a

    par

    with

    those i n the States .

    Only

one applicant out of every 20 i s aqcepted, so my classmates include some of the

    ost

    b r i l l i a n t young minds

    i n

    Thailand.

    ow

    we

    yearn

    to

    see these

    young

    peopl e b rought

    t o Chris t ,

    Opportunit ies

    are

    increasing to

    discuss

    s p i r i t u a l

    matters

    with them

    and

    once

every three weeks there i s a meeting of Catholic and Protestant students where I

    have

    been

    privileged

to p re sen t the simple

    Christianity

    of the ew Testament. Last

    month I was invited to

    speak

    a t a week-end camp o f Chr is ti an unive rs it y students rep

NEWS FROM THE REST OF THE FAMILY

    Since

    Callaways

    were

    moving

    north

    to

    Chiengkam

    for

    the

    summer

    and

    as

    the

    Harry

Schaefer family was preparing to leave Bangkok for America, Dorothy

    ^^^flew

    up

    to We

    had hoped

to o to Pua first, but early rains

    had

    alr^aSfy made the roads impassable.

    Upon arriving in

Chiengmai we found that our house

    was

    not

yet vacant, so we l ived

    i n

a two-room cottage for tvjo weeks,

    iis^house to

    us

    completely furnished

    and might

    be^described

    as ^

^.TKai-modern in style . The rooms are

    large

and airy. Kitchen and other work areas

    y are

    separate

    from the

    house.

    Since we cook on

    an open

    charcoal

    stove,

    t h i s

    separation

    protects

    the

    main

    p a r t

    of

    the house

    from

    the

    heat

    and

    d i r t of

    the

    f i r e . We

    have

    elec-

    t-ricity,

    running

    water ,

    and

    d a i l y

    mail d e l i v e r y service a l l the comforts of

    Besides th e

    had t o

    order

    to

    bring

    these

    things through

    customs and

    to

    make application

    for

    another extension on E il ee n s v is a.

    Upon re turning home, t h e r e were

    th e jobs

    of

    unpacking

    and p u t t i n g away t o

    Meanwhile,

    we were
