HELMET NYMPH TREE-HOPPERSharp, angular, and rigid form comprised of broad and

layered segments creates a strong armor

NORTHERN GANNETfluid and streamlined, the Gannet has high contrasting

features which prove to be elegant yet formidable

NAUTILUSa combination of fleshy organic folds and tentacles, protected by a hard, and geometrically perfect shell

CONCEPT | RESEARCH After researching exotic and visually interesting animals, we were tasked with taking key aesthetic features that would be represented in the abstract form

SKETCH + MODEL EXPLORATION Taking the aesthetics researched in the previous stages, quick developmental sketches and models were created to explore the abstraction of form and features.

FINAL DIRECTION With combined mechanical and organic features, the biomorph project became a deadly undersea cargo and transport vehicle. Tough, graceful, and ferocious

In a world overcome by water due to global warming, the future appears bleak for humanity unless we learn to adapt

Humanity reverts to the ideas of their predecessors for survival tactics and new ways of life

In Cities built both above and below water, survival is critical in not only a terrestrial environment, but also a deep sea setting

Re-introducing the laminate trim router

THIS IS JOHN.John is a 64 year old professional fine furniture maker and designer. He is an expert on identifying and repairing antiques, and he has been designing and building fine furniture for the past 15 years.

John needs a new trim router. Professionals and hobyists alike need a small, versitile router that has a plunge and trim funtion.

Woodworkers of all sorts have great use for a good trim router. Not too long ago, a trim router was used only for trimming laminate. Now days however, it is good for a variety of purposes such as chamfering and rounding edges, cutting grooves and inlays, setting hinges, trimming vaneer, and flush cutting edge bonding. Craftsmen have even found ways to carve out interesting designs and patterns for hobby.

However, it has its issues...

“Quality tools since 1906”

“For over 100 years, Porter-Cable has and always will provide and service quality power tools for the professional woodworker and

tradesman, engineeed to deliver high-quality, professional results at a great value.”

Bit must be tightened into place with two wrenches The worker must be able to hold both wrenches, the bit, and the tool at the same time

Shield is replaced and knobs are tightened. Worker wonders if plastic knobs will really keep the base in place during work. Is it safe?

Router is loud and obnoxious. The work area quickly fills with wood particles. The worker has to tilt body in order to get decent visability

The collet is in the way of the base. This means that the base has to be removed and replaced for any adjsutments in depth or bit change.

Worker manually adjusts bit height according to visual perception. Guides are inaccurate.

Bit is placed in and first tightened with hands.

Plastic base rolls off of plastic indentations. Seems unsafe and inaccurate.

Plastic knobs are loosened using two hands. Knobs are turned in opposite directions.

The plastic parts in the tool are disconcerting. They seem to make the tool unsafe. In addition, the bit attachment and adjustment is inaccurate and inefficient.

The double wrench system practically requires three hands. The fact that the bit cannot be adjusted after the base is added is impractical. The entire configuration in general is unsafe and difficult to use.

LET’S GO FROM THIS.....

Page 19: Barfield_Kelly_2016 Portfolio8

....TO THIS

New tool features easy knob adjustments with no more wrenches. Bases offer safe, easy bit change.

Multiple bases allow for versatility and ease of access. They allow the worker to choose how to use the tool rather than the tool dictating their options

All base adjustments, bot micro and macro, are made with manual knobs

bit is simply inserted and twisted.

All buttons are conveinantly located where the worker can access them easily, yet lockable for safety

bases easily slide on and lock into place

on/off switch is located conveinantly along side

...And then locked in place with a simple lock button on router body

knob is adjusted with fingers...

bit is inserted via base instead of tool

THE FINISHING PROCESS Professionally painting a model was no easy task. In the end however, it was well worth the careful taping, gluing, masking, and spraying.

SKETCH + MECHANICS Figuring out a cam system, working around the goals of a moveable head, tail, and walking legs. A little math was involved too.

KELLY BARFIELD | [email protected] | (419)-508-8468 27

Page 29: Barfield_Kelly_2016 Portfolio8

The gear system did not have enough force to move all of the components as a system - it could only move each individually.

As a result, a new design had to be created. The second design consisted of a much larger, central drive wheel, metal axels for extra support, and simple cams to move the head and tail.

All parts were handmade and hand cut from baltic birch plywood and soft maple.

Prototyping Working in the wood shop to precisely cut, glue, assemble a model. Mistakes were made, and parts were adapted along the way. It was all part of the fun.

KELLY BARFIELD | [email protected] | (419)-508-8468 28

Page 30: Barfield_Kelly_2016 Portfolio8

SKETCH + MECHANICS (2) Because the gear train was not strong enough in the first, the second prototype had one large gear that provided extra force and simplified the design.

MODEL | PHYSICS I created a solid works model to assess the assembly process and the feasability of the final model. Running a simulation, all parts seemed to be in working order.
